Black fraternities a Brotherhood an organized society of men associated together in an environment of companionship dedicated to the intellectual physical and social development of its members every year thousands of students are exposed to these fraternities but Rob really goes on in these fraternities is it the common misconception that they are
Simply a group of young men who practice stepping throwing parties and live in the college celebrity lifestyle that so many are exposed to or is it much more than that this is real black paternity life beyond the glamour so what do we know about black fraternities we know that they throw
Parties we also know that they are tightly bonded in are often seen in groups around college campuses and of course the stepping even those that didn’t go to college has some of these same perceptions about them partly due to what’s seen in movies and television
Shows such as these we lose a Phi Beta Gamma Phi Beta Gamma step as you can see it is easy to fall into these perceptions based on what is exposed to us I got a chance to sit down with a few college students and fraternity members just to see what they
Had to say about their first perceptions about black fraternities my first thoughts were that it was for popularity just being honest um I thought that it was more so just for show I didn’t really know a lot about it so I thought that’s just smart that was my
Assumption I perceived them as a lot more structured than your normal Club a lot more close-knit more of a Brotherhood than your normal Club for your major such as your a club or scoring just seeing various college experiences prior to me coming to college going out with friends that were
Already in college I kind of saw the strolling and the skipping so that was the only side that I didn’t get to see at that age so that’s that that’s what I took from whoa I mean just like pretty much would in a typical presence not exposed to because the first thing you
See with returning from the outside it’s like a step show or see him on the yard doing whatever strut they do so me from the outside looking in when I look outside the first thing I was exposed to was either them strolling or you’re demented party could be walking
And you’ll see Flyers on the ground or Flyers on posted boards anywhere saying hey there’s a pretty here imagine yourself being a college freshman all over again you’re young and no longer in mom and dad’s house and you can’t wait to experience different parties and social events that college life has to
Offer so instinctively you find yourself to those types of activities which often involve eternities so it now becomes understandable why so many young students initially have these perceptions but not all have the same common misconceptions some actually are introduced to a more positive side of the black fraternities other than the
Glamour my mentor was a wuzzle wuzzle birth remember him outside and he there that whole time I was in high school he was one of the biggest mentors any a big father figure when I needed when both my parents when I rec so that would help me
You know in the whole time I was just doing my research and finding out which China really really helped guide me by the right choice that fitted me I was at my freshman your residential experience which had the freshmen that were interested in coming to campus a week early and we
Were actually introduced to the black Greek life through a show called Park Jam and in Park Jam they introduced all the fraternities that we have that are on our campus and so the first fraternity that was introduced to me was the alphas and they came on and they did
Their legendary legendary things that are just for them they introduced us to themselves and they told us how they were brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha and if I guess the kind of recruits um just to say like oh this is what we do if you ask any black fraternity member what
They are all about of course Brotherhood is a given but they pride themselves on the community service and giving back to the school and community here on this yard we do so much fully art we do so many programs for the people so many community service activities that if they did think that
Way and their perception has changed it’s always was always some kind of conservative our changes you know even if we’re not going it together as a chapter we’re always mentoring or getting guidance anybody say ‘hey we’ve done quite a few one of the ones that actually like sticks out like a lot was
My reading to those kids up in the X is D but just by looks like coming there and like like spend the time with those kids and my reading torn they really like motivated them to you know do the work I can feel every good in class last one
We had a seminar called does heavy hand because having have a roll call and why would you pick that up there program to put on the yard was because a few years back it was an announcement it was an outcome man or whatever and he goes to church on Sunday he goes
To church and this particular Sunday his pastor is preaching about Greek versus religion so its pastor was saying and then a very nice Greek organization and not good and you know look is actually going ahead so the next day the guy writes a letter to his to his chapters
Most of his organization eternity and he denounces his letters you’ve done a lot of tree service on I say adjusting this money we have went to start over fed fed the homeless demand and the homeless or communities also another thing that I really stuck out ever the community
Service expect it’s like whenever we went to the homeless camp that was like that was truly a humbling experience I live like that was actually my first time ever doing that and it’s like cleaning things that we take for granted that then we actually should see them
They’re like knowing that that deal on the way they don’t eat it that shows or anything I like to lay their head it this episode just by me being there like he’ll be really humble and like just look back on being or not taking anything for granted
And just know that like I I am truly blessed Thursday we had Kipp Academy here on campus with a middle school group out of Houston private school seven eighth grade Adam demet Oregon campus and just basically you know just introducing to you know what college life is about what to expect
Only problem to the campus TV station the library gallery the gallery in the library and also the problem the band hall and hope are tailored just basically given like a little after he was going on you know we have some on the campus caught a captive sleep off
And what we were really trying to do was we was trying to get the students to put themselves in the shoes of homeless not to know like exactly how they are you know how it is the opponent just kind of get like a an idea basically we’re out here trying to
Create with the homeless people go through because every day everybody might fortunate like others and we were trying to say what let they go through it makes you appreciate the little just fine hump day that’s all fun but if that’s not the main purpose of why we’re here don’t
Just get into it for the party class get it that’s how you get for it into it for you really kind of sweet intentions please don’t let me be me
