It’s that time of year again and many bright eyed bushy tailed older adults and younger college students the same are touching down at college campuses and communities and expressing their interest in Greek letters organization while many of us might say we don’t care and others of us say hmm how can I be
Down Greek life has been something that has been long discussed and something that always comes up now being a professor for the past 4 years and also being a long-standing member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated almost 12 years now I still get so many questions about Greek life how to join
What not to do what to do why you would join and why is it important anyway why wasn’t I chosen or is there something I should be doing and so I asked some opinions of some of my closest Greek friends both younger and older and here
Are some of the reasons I came up with any of these reasons work no matter what organization you’re looking to join even if it’s not a black Greek letter organization feel free to chime in add your opinions and hope you enjoy when I first stopped want to thank all the
Groups who gave me some input on this topic let’s help the future college students who are really interested in Greek life that also goes for graduates interested in joining organizations as well my reasons are my absolute you had many reasons please feel free to let me
Know below we can get into a discussion and do bang number one some people are not even at the college aid and then there’s people that are then literally walk onto campuses and say things like I’m gonna be there rather than even knowing anything about the organization the organization’s history anything about
The people who are on the campus the people who are currently in New York ization a just praying they don’t beat it number two with a big I’m not even checking the standards before you say you want to be a member it’s not just about saying you want to join a DNN you
Have to have a certain level in GPA know how to manage your time something I don’t even get along with yourself so I’m trying to get along with people in organizations no community service no perception of what sisterhood and Brotherhood is how can even ask questions if you don’t know the best way
Is that ask respectful so many people don’t even do that I know you don’t even make it to classes on time join other organizations I have been interested in being an integral part of your community and how are you gonna be the member of an organization and that goes for any
Organization understand what it means to become a member of that organization the next thing that a lot of people told me that they see is people express injuries but they really don’t show interest how you do a show to party you’re just ready to kick it all the time you’re not
Really ready to put in the work that it takes to be a successful member let alone a successful college student or a successful community member come to various events have your own hobbies and interests making a difference in your community even without having to have Greek letters across your Czech leaders
In their organizations already that really don’t need anything to make them be better or spent out showing up to things other than social commitments and then lets me know that you’re pretty serious about what you want to do number four my heart some people feelings but
Uh a lot of people like to believe that they are Shue is because they sister baby daddy uncle niece nephew and brother granddaddy great granddaddy and his granddaddy we’ll all members of the organization they desire to be in it because of that they should just be a member
Let me tell you legacies are amazing I think it’s great to want to be an organization member because of the people that have come before you are took care of you or who mentored you but you should also understand on your own right and know what you know about
Organization and know that you know the people who are actually in the organization of when your campus or in your community don’t have a sense of entitlement as if it should be given to you rather than trying to figure out what actually works for you be mindful of those that are
There and respectful of those that are there you don’t Trump nobody just because you walk up and say somebody else you know is a member of this organization just to make sure you’re pretty respectful about that fact and no way you stand on your own principles for
Wanting to be a member no I was mentioned by a lot of groups that I reached out to mainly because they see a lot of these people to just express interest because they want to be seen and it’s going to be hard being a member of these organizations is about a lot
More to get the thoughts the holes and the burbs you heard what about building lifelong relationships networking getting out there becoming something that has been an historic practice don’t just want to be a part of it because you might get some chicks I’ll get some dude you
Should be able to do that without the organization right never mind something okay number six we’ve all seen as well the people who come in bragging on who they know is great Oh nobody hear about will you know that it’s great it’s okay to talk about those people who haven’t
Launched your reasons for wanting to be a member of an organization but just brag and I’ll Cindy would you use thrown away or DD who you used to chill with it’s not being a heightening it’s really not cool just kind of know your limits in making sure your
The right thing and it leads me into the next one that was mentioned a lot which is sharing things with people who cannot help you when you express interest you probably want to go to someone who’s a community leader leader within the organization in which you want to be a
Part of or a person who can really help you be able to express the interest well help people who really matter some people can use it to their advantage such as in hazing or using you for different things rather than mint want you to the place where you want to
Be the next one was something I was surprised to hear that still happens stop the perfect those people who act like they’re members of the organization so they might be walking around wearing paraphernalia and ain’t been a member of the organization else basically getting the perks without doing the work you see
What I did there someone’s gonna find out someone’s gonna tell somebody it’s pretty offensive to all organizations no matter which one you want to be a part of the next thing is the person who bad max people this person just talks about everybody that group they not Greek
Whoever they are but then they decide they want to be a member of organization people talk and they tell each other and look out for each other because even if they’re not a member they understand the importance of it to the people who are you don’t like the case because they do
This you don’t like the Nelsons cuz they do that the cap is wack and omegas is this but you really want to be a Sigma you might be ruined but many people find out and report that might ruin your chances I was not only president about the Kappa
Alpha I was the president of the National pan-hellenic Council on my campus a lot of times I heard a lot of the things that were going on lots of us talked to each other just because we were in an organization did not mean we were not going to talk to
Each other my best friends were deltas he always knew who said this and who said that a lot of times and wasn’t even Greeks they came to tell us information it was not groups again old friends you think you tell them they can help you they might be stabbing you
Right on in the back the next one in make sure that you’ve done your research one of all the organizations not just the one you want to be a part of I love when people are able to show interest in lots of different things but then figure
Out the thing that’s best for them and know why it’s best for them know a little bit about all of them and why they fit or don’t fit for you you’re more invested in that history you’re more invested in what that organization stands for and not just it’s popular or
All your friends are becoming members as well thirsty but you shouldn’t be it’s important that you’re eager that you show interest but make sure that you’re not just following people around because they have Greek letters or because you idolize the organization I love Jesus
I’m not pray to aka I find out that you like me just because I’m a hey can I do one for you to step back because to me will appear to be a groupie I’ll just follow people around because they’re Greeks and it makes them superior or
Better than or even a good person you don’t want to be caught just following people around just because they have read letters joining organizations just to be closer to them or to idolize them any further last but certainly not least get your life you come to college or
When you’re integral member of a community you come here to make that thing better in college you coming to get good grades so you can get a would career school first was important to me and then being in an organization those organizations will help you in the area
Of networking possibly even getting a job in the future but you best believe you better be at the top of your game doing what you’re supposed to do on your college campus and in your community oh that’s you to my excel beyond for college ears so that’s all that I have
