She’ll introduce herself in some more detail shortly but hi my name is kim kushner i serve as our assistant director of new student and family programs here in the office of student involvement or osi our office of student involvement is part of our division of student affairs which houses multiple resources service activities
Events we’re not just the party planners although we have been known to you know facilitate a really great event here and there but whether your student is looking for mental health resources campus recreation involvement bookstore multicultural student affairs you name it student affairs and our division has that and today we are
Doing one of our first of our summer series of family talk where we’re highlighting some of our different office of student involvement as well as division of student affairs resources particularly focusing on thinking about the parent and family approach and how we can get our parents families and supporters
Maybe nudging their students a little more to get involved in greek life or get involved in campus recreation or residential life or some of the other different opportunities again at our campus um so lynne will introduce herself momentarily i’m going to have her advance the slides and i um
The way this is working um we are on um hopefully we are live i believe um i’m just talking here yes we are live and um if there’s questions in the chat on either on facebook or um as well as in the q a here um we will

Had a little more you know fun here with trying to get this set up and it didn’t quite work there we go okay we were having some issues with our live stream on facebook because facebook likes to make it not easy to um live stream where it was
Telling me i was testing and then i wasn’t so i’m just gonna do a little tiny bit of a recap because i know we’re getting a few um new folks who are coming in but again um if you just want to go back to that original screen for a
Hot second again my name is kim kushner if you didn’t hear my intro i serve as our assistant director of new student and family programs and today we are talking about fraternity and sorority affairs at umkc this is a first of a series of summer family talks
And we’ll go over some of the really valuable information about getting involved in fraternities and sororities as well as other important great things to know about um fraternity and sorority affairs at umkc all right now advance that slide um so a little bit again about me um i
Serve as our assistant director of new student and family programs what’s really great about my role is that i’m in the office of student involvement along with lynn but i also um putting on my family cap today and yes although we have parent and family as kind of that umbrella term we
Want to make sure folks know anybody is welcome to be taking part in our parent and family programs who is a caring and loving supporter of current umkc students um i love this um particular photo it’s from family weekend a few years ago where we had a student who
Brought like legitimately like her whole fam you can see from ages like one to like you know grandparents and just significant others so i always start all of our family talk in all of our parent and family sessions just showcasing that parent and family is an umbrella term for
Our step parents our extended family members adoptive foster legal guardians or really anyone again who serves as that primary or caring supporter go ahead and advance the slide and again as a reminder some of you probably who signed up have already seen my face maybe your new family members or new students
But we house parent and family programs with the tagline staying involved getting connected support yeru in our office of student involvement and in the division of student affairs so there’s newsletters resources family weekend which happens at the end of september early october this year um and you can see our website there
Uh now now that we’re actually doing this correctly okay um i am going to uh hand it over to my colleague lynn we’re going to be doing a little bit of a q a format where i’m going to ask some questions to lynn and she is going to
Introduce herself and go over again what parents family supporters or even current and incoming students should know because we know maybe you’re watching with um you know one of your students or you really want to relay information again this will be on um the live stream on the facebook group for parents and
Families as well as we’ll be recording this and adding it to our website but without further ado um lynn if you could go ahead and introduce yourself um and if you could also share with us a brief introduction to um our umkc parent or excuse me fraternity and sorority community
Yeah thank you so much for the wonderful introduction and explanation of the program my name is len o’dell i use she her hers pronouns and i serve as umkc’s coordinator for fraternity and sorority affairs within our office of student involvement just a little bit about me i’ve been at
Umkc since the fall of 2018 i came here to pursue my master’s degree in higher education so i am a proud alum of umkc and while getting my master’s degree i served as the graduate assistant for preterion sorority affairs here in the office and then in the spring of 2020 i
Transitioned into the full-time coordinator role so i’ve been in this role for a little over two years but i’ve been working with this community for about four years i am a proud member of alpha fee which is an npc sorority not on yum casey’s campus but one of the npc sororities
Out there in the universe but so i’m going to transition to really talking about the umkc greek life community so we’re going to start with a brief definition about what our fraternities and sororities and these are essentially student organizations whose primary purpose is the personal development of members and creating lifelong bonds with
Each other so really developing that brotherhood sisterhood and siblinghood with within one another and we’ll kind of go in depth here in a little bit about what the difference between fraternities and sororities and general student organizations are but all of our fraternities and sororities while they are a little bit
Different they’re all based around common values which are fellowship scholarship service and philanthropy leadership and culture and we’ll go a little bit more in depth with all of those here in a little bit as well but just some brief facts about our umkc greek life community we currently have
13 chapters so we have eight sororities and five fraternities and we have over 300 members in our community which translates to about four percent of the umkc population and we’re really proud to say that our members serve as leaders on campus and in the kansas city community you can
Find many of our members serving in roles on the student government asum we have many leaders in our multicultural student affairs office we have members participating in kansas city athletics and this past spring we actually had six students be selected as dean of students honor recipients which
Is one of the greatest honors you can receive at umkc as a graduating senior we have several involved in the pal program mentoring other students on campus and more many of our graduates are now out in the kansas city community taking on roles within within government and just all across the city
Some things that we’re really proud of within our community this last year we raised over 23 000 for various philanthropic organizations this was our highest record to date so we are super proud of that as well as our community service hours we had over 3 000 service hours almost 4 000
Community service hours reported and so our community is extremely passionate about giving back to our local community and helping others in need we also had 45 members attend inter national or regional leadership conferences which again we’ll talk about that great opportunity to develop leadership skills and we had 364 members attend fraternity
And sorority affairs leadership programming we offer a lot of different programming for members to be able to develop their different areas such as our new member symposium which all new members are required to attend we have an emerging leaders retreat a president’s workshop a risk management workshop and our greek day of service
So that’s just a little bit about our programming and just a little bit about the community excellence um can you talk to me a little bit lynn about um how do greek letter organizations differ from other involvement experiences at umkc um you know why why join a fraternity why join a sorority and
What what what about them is really that special because you know it’s just such a special type of organization that we have on campus and such an opportunity for our students so if you could speak to that that would be wonderful yeah so student organizations typically
Have that we see on umkc’s campus one to two focus areas that might be a service organization an organization specifically focused on leadership or their organizations that are specifically for their major like pre-pharmacy society pre-medical society etc but fraternities and sororities have the really unique opportunity on
Focusing on a lot of those areas of development such as service and philanthropy developing leadership skills again building that brotherhood and sisterhood and really networking and professional development so that’s kind of the biggest difference is we focus on a lot of different areas where as many student organizations are
Only focusing on one to two things but additionally one of the biggest differences is that we do have national organizations that we report to and who oversee us being a part of greek life means being a part of something much bigger than yourself and being a part of something much bigger than umkc
Many of our fraternities and sororities are located all across the united states and in canada and many of our nphc and culturally based organizations are actually located in several other countries across the globe as well so you’re building a network that expands all across the united states and able to
Build relationships with many different individuals that could help you in your future career and time after umkc it is a lifelong membership experience which i think also differs from a general student organization personally myself i graduated as i said for my undergraduate degree in 2018 and i have remained involved with my
Sorority ever since i’m actually traveling to arizona next week to attend our 150th national convention in scottsdale arizona where i’ll be able to reconnect with sisters i’ll be attending a disney leadership institute so i’ll be able to gain skills that i can bring back to my job and just again reconnect
With sisters and be able to further our fraternity and expand our greek life experience across the united states but those are just some of the biggest differences but i really like to highlight it is a lifelong membership and it doesn’t it doesn’t have to stop once you graduate from umkc
You know what i love about that too that’s a little bit different maybe than a normal involvement experience is as you mentioned just the community itself the fraternities and sororities here at umkc um it’s just a home away from home where even you know the sororities will attend you
Mentioned philanthropy and service each other service events leadership development they all come together for different types of experiences and that community that folks are sometimes finding whether they’re living on campus whether they’re living maybe in their chapter house or with chapter members or maybe they’re living at home still or living in an
Apartment they’re still getting that community experience so they’ve got that sorority or fraternity that they affiliate with and identify so actively with but also the overall community is so special and i think that’s a really cool thing as well yeah i think one of the biggest things
That i love about umkc’s community is that we aren’t so massive that you’re not able to get to know all of the individuals in your chapter and in the community i think that that is one of the things that i hear from students all the time is they
Love the size of the community because they’re able to build really strong relationships with each other and with other individuals in other chapters and in other councils and you walk across campus and you’re going to see someone in a fraternity sorority and just be able to have that connection that you
Might not have if you weren’t a member awesome hey we have a question so i’m going to pause for a second um one of our uh webinar attendees um hi what is the time commitment for most sororities my daughter will be in the bamd program thank you perfect so we actually have several
Members who are in the ba md program within the greek community um i think it’s an awesome opportunity for your student to become a part of the fraternity and sorority community i know we have several doctors who have graduated from our community and many of our students
Say that they’ve been able to get you know deeper connections with jobs and things because of their fraternity sorority connection but it differs between each organization typically within their first semester they will have a weekly chapter meeting that they attend that is probably an hour long and
Then a new member meeting that’s about maybe 30 minutes to an hour long and then there may be just different required events that they’ll be required to attend like initiation and all of those new member experiences but a lot of things are optional sisterhood events are typically optional
And they’re really able to build their own experience but it is an investment of time and there are required events but all of the chapters are great about giving those dates in advance so that the students could put in their planners and know what what their week looks like
Or what their month is going to look like when it comes to the sorority commitment well there we go lynn and i are in the same room which is so funny so i was just talking and uh i was on mew which is you know supes awkward as well that’s
The beauty of live streaming friends um so so thank you lynn what i was saying is i do have another question for you um and you mentioned this a little bit as we kind of went through the intro and some of the how the involvement experiences um again
Really create the communities and create the identities of the chapters and whatnot but talk to me more about the benefits of joining a greek letter organization um here at umkc and again just in general yeah so i have listed some of the benefits of membership and i think the
First is that i always talk about is the brotherhood and sisterhood our students are really able to create those close bonds of friendship and i think as whether you’re a student as a freshman or they’re transferring to umkc they’re able to join a group of individuals that
Are going to be able to support them through this new transition um that could be you know mentorship opportunities you know older members helping new members with what classes to take or where the best places to study on campus or even just providing that emotional support i know many students
Get homesick and they here at umkc when they join our community they have that network and those close bonds that they can relate back to when they’re feeling homesick next would be our scholarship so ultimately your student is here for their academics they’re here to get a
Degree and move on after college and academics will always come first and should come first when it comes to joining a fraternity or sorority our organizations provide a lot of academic support and access to resources we really encourage our organizations to seek out different resources and they do a lot of different
Programming that helps support our members academics i do want to say that many of our organizations all of our organizations do require you to have a certain gpa to join but also to remain active and in good standing typically that gpa to join is a 2.5 but some organizations are
Higher than that so it’s just important that your student does that research or ask the organizations directly what that gpa requirement is but as i mentioned they also have to have that gpa to remain active and in good standing that doesn’t mean that if they fall below that gpa they’re
Automatically you know kicked out of the organization but they will be put on a plan with the chapter to be able to bounce back from that as a support plan whether that looks like study hours getting connected to resources getting a mentor within the chapter but ultimately our organizations want to provide
Resources while also holding students and members accountable to ensure that they’re staying on track to graduate from umkc i talked a lo about this a little bit but leadership i think that is ultimately the reason why i joined was because i wanted to gain more leadership experiences to have on my resume and
Just to help further myself as an individual and so i think that if your student wants to gain leadership skills joining a fraternity or sorority is one of the best ways to do this each chapter has an executive board as well as appointed positions and even small
Leadership roles that they can take on to help with that as i mentioned also our organizations attend national and regional leadership conferences where they’re able to meet brothers and sisters from all across the united states and build connections as well as build connections with alumni and national officers who can then help them
Get a job or get an internship in the future which is always amazing and was one of my favorite experiences i attended several national leadership conferences and i actually still keep in touch with with my sisters that i met i was just texting one today um she is
Quitting her job and moving on to a different career and i just wanted to wish her the best of luck with that um but we do still stay in touch which i think is amazing and then next is service and philanthropy as i again mentioned our community is very committed to that
And there are the opportunities to serve the community and be involved with these philanthropies is endless just a few of the the organizations that i can think of off the top of my head are ronald mcdonald house big brothers big sisters the make-a-wish foundation special olympics national cancer society breast cancer
Our students also often go out to local high schools and mentor students as well as raise funds to provide scholarship for those scholarships for those students as well i don’t want to reiterate myself too much but again access to a global network and connections that can lead to job
Opportunities and internships i can’t emphasize that enough i think many often i hear individuals who serve in leadership roles at institutions or at companies talk about if they see someone with a greek letter organization and they’re also greek they’re automatically going to give them an interview because they
Know about the requirements and the investment that it takes to be in a fraternity or sorority and so that’s just a little bit about the benefits i i could talk about them all day but that’s it in summary i love it i love it and again these um
Slides in this video will be on demand for folks so if you need you know if you’re a parent or family member and you just kind of need to remember a little bulleted point list to say all right um here you know student here are things that like i really really think that
This could be an awesome opportunity for you to think about you know going through the recruitment process and just learning about this access to the global network and these leadership opportunities and making friends and doing well in school and living this like values based you know life at umkc i think that’s so
Great and beyond because again that lifelong membership um so now how can a fam parent or family member support their students in determining you know for if they’re sharing all those benefits and they’re kind of walking them through the slide deck in our presentation today how can they help their student
Determine if joining a greek organization is for them yeah so i think the first thing is parents and supporters learning about greek life at umkc themselves and the organizations that we have so everyone that’s here we appreciate you being here and taking that first step to learn about our community
We have a lot of different reports and resources that really tell the story of the young casey greek community and i’ll talk about those in the next slide that i would encourage you all to check out so that you can determine you know is this something that my student will
Benefit from is this something that my student will enjoy which i’m confident the answer would be yes but i will allow you all to make that decision but there are so many resources that i’m going to share with you that can help you learn a little bit more about our community
This is also a big one is i think discussing the finances and membership expectations our organizations are dues paying organizations we have to pay national dues to our national organizations and the local chapters are funded by dues and members paying their dues and so i think looking at those finances and
Discussing that with your student of you know as a parent or supporter i’m able to provide you this much or i’m not able to support this endeavor let’s talk about you know do you can we get you a job an on-campus job or off-campus job to help you support
This experience but also the membership expectations i love that earlier we received a question about the time commitment i think talking about that with your student and being realistic about what their time commitment looks like and if they’re able to invest in this experience because it is an investment of time money
And those are important things to talk about before joining an organization i also think it’s important to help your student think of questions to ask the fraternities or sororities especially if they’re going through recruitment or intake we actually have on our website a list of examples of questions that you
Can encourage your student to ask like what does the time commitment look like what will be expected of me questions like that that will help them learn more about the organization and then ultimately support your students decision if they choose to join an organization that’s awesome and we
Want to celebrate that with them and we want to allow our student to choose the organization that most aligns with their personal values and their goals i know a lot of times we have students who are legacies and we see them wanting to join the organization that their parent
Joined or maybe they don’t want to join that organization either way support their decision and be happy for them and i think for you all as parents and supporters your involvement doesn’t end once they join there are so many opportunities to stay connected with your student and the fraternity sorority
Many of our students host family weekends or dad’s days mom’s days all of those fun things this was actually at this picture was at sae’s family weekend and so there’s many opportunities for you to meet the your students brothers and sisters and attend events so you’re able to personally learn more about who
They’re around and what they’re getting involved in and so i’ll talk a little bit next about those resources that i mentioned um so we have our community report which shows a lot of different things it shows gpas it showcases how many service hours each chapter completed
The amount of money they may have raised for different philanthropies how many members they have etcetera etcetera and all of these are on our website the year in review that was just released and that pretty much is a really really great document that showcases the story and tells the story of the umkc
Community we talk about the accomplishments that each of our councils had over the past year and we featured four students who were involved in either a kansas city organization or in an organization at umkc that they really made a difference in and they also shared about their greek experience
And how that’s impacted their time at umkc of course the portraying sorority beers website you can check that out and then our social media it’s at umkc greeks you can see a lot of great stuff there we post pretty often and try to feature many of our different organizations and the amazing things
That they’re doing but i also encourage you to check out some of the different chapter social media accounts or websites so that you can learn about the organizations that your student is specifically interested in as well as their inter slash national organization websites you’re going to find a lot of different policies there
Talk find out about the different values and leadership opportunities that are available and so these are just all really great resources to learn about our community thank you we actually have another question in our chat here do sororities have their own houses thank you that is a great question so we have um
Four panhellenic sororities one independent multicultural sorority and then three nphc or national panhellenic sororities are four panhellenic sororities which are in the collegiate panhellenic council are housed three of the four are housed one chapter does require that sophomores live in the other two that have houses is optional um
The sorority that does require that is kai omega they house i believe close to 30 members which is a great experience if that’s what your student is looking for it can be a cheaper option for them to live in the sorority house and it’s also just a great experience to get to
Live with your sisters they are able to cook in the house and all the furniture is provided but same thing with the other two chapters that have houses it’s also a community building space and they’re just able to be able to have that opportunity to connect outside of
Campus but that is kind of a short answer that yes three of the four collegiate panhellenic sororities do have houses awesome and we have another really great question um in our chat and um to this family member totally this is an amazing very very good question
And it is not silly so just know that um lynn do potential members and two students do they apply for one that they feel would be a good fit do they put their name in a field in a pool and get involved can you talk more about that kind of new member
Um and prospective member experience yeah so that that is not a silly question it’s a great question it really varies per council so for panhellenic the collegiate panhellenic council and the interfraternity council those two both have a registration that students would need to sign up on
Both of those are located on our website or in our instagram bio so the student can register there for sigma lambda gamma who is actually pictured on the screen they are our multicultural sorority and they have an interest form that you can fill out that is located in their
Instagram bio and they typically do a week of recruitment it’s very informal but you are required to attend an informational during that week and then our nphc organizations are a little bit different if your student is interested in an phc organization i would encourage them to
Either reach out to me or go to check out our website about the tips and resources that that are encouraged when seeking to pursue an nphc organization we also have an fsa interest form that if your student is unsure about what they want to join but they know they
Want to join our greek community they can fill out that interest form and i will personally respond to them and reach out to them and try to figure out what the best fit for them would be and then give them that direct resource of if they know they want to join an ifc
Fraternity i will send them the registration link and all of that great stuff but that interest form is located again on our fsa website on rue groups which your student has access to and in our instagram bio and lynn um good really good question and it made me think of just a quick
Follow-up um when do students typically determine if they want to get involved in this like does it happen before school does it happen during school can they do it their fourth year in umkc like um you know how when do they normally determine and how can parents maybe help them determine
The right timing for um experience and getting involved in the community the opportunity to join a fraternity or sorority it’s really at any point in time our ifc fraternities participate in 365 recruitment so while they do have a formal recruitment process at the very beginning of the semester
Both fall and spring you can join an ifc fraternity at any point in time our collegiate panhellenic council they also host a formal recruitment that we do encourage students who are interested to go through that process because you’re able to meet and connect with all four chapters within cpc but they do also
Have informal recruitment processes that take place throughout the semesters but that is not necessarily guaranteed because there is a cap and how many members they’re allowed to have and so if they’re at that cap then they cannot accept any more members so that kind of varies per organization whether
They’re allowed to informally recruit for nphc you can join their requirements are typically that you have to have had either a semester or a full year at umkc before you can join and that varies per organization and so you can do that research at the national organization level
Or look on rue groups about that requirement but their processes kind of take place throughout the years and they’re able to pick and choose kind of which semester they want to hold intake and then signal them to gamma they also hold a recruitment process either in the fall
Or the spring or both depending on their needs at the time but really any student any year freshman sophomore junior senior can go through recruitment or intake it is totally up to you to your student and what they’re most comfortable with awesome thank you so much
As we start to wrap up um how do they contact how do parents and families or students contact you if they have more questions or contact your office and then anything else that you’re thinking about that you want to make sure is included in our time together today
So contact information and then any other kind of last thoughts you are you’re muted we’re both playing this game yeah we both keep doing that can you tell you know we’ve only been like in and out of live streaming and webinars for like three years now but apparently you know
It’s just that day so thanks folks for watching we’re just hilarious together yeah so this is my email fsa at umkc.edu and then that is my phone number feel free to reach out to me at any point with questions i’ve had parents call and talk to me
About finances and how they can make that work because they know that they want to support their student through that process and so we’ve just had conversations about that but i’m happy to talk with any parent about you know what the process looks like and why their student might want to join
I do want to touch on one thing before we kind of wrap up is safety i know that that can be a major concern for parents and families when their student is joining a fraternity or sorority or they hear that word fraternity or sorority unfortunately many organizations across
The united states aren’t living up to the values of their organizations and are participating in things like hazing that they should not be doing but i want to talk a little bit about that one of the reasons that i chose to stay at umkc and and do my work
Here is because of the community’s commitment to safety and their commitment to supporting their members well-being and really just being there for one another i think that that is so important and one of the things that you can go check out on our community report is violations of student code of conduct
That is in the community report and you can see what chapters may have had violations which would include hazing it would include anything related to title ix or sexual violence or discrimination i’m happy to say that since i’ve been here we have not had any organizations have violations of student code of
Conduct and so that’s something that we’re extremely proud of that we are providing a safe and memorable experience for our members we also i want to just touch a little bit more on safety is that we do require our organizations to participate in one harm prevention program per year that
They’re able to choose what the topic may be and you can actually see what programs they chose on the community report but they’re required to have 85 of their chapter in attendance to that program as well as re review their national risk management policies each year as well
And so we’re really encouraging them to take on that ownership of knowing their policies and enforcing them we also host national hazing prevention week and i think this year we’re going to try to partner with some other offices on campus to get more of the community involved
And then each member is required when they bring in new members both the current chapter members and the new members are required to sign an anti-hazing document stating that they understand what the policies are and that they will not participate in those behaviors and so i
Just wanted to briefly touch on that as i know that that can be a major concern and i want to ensure you all that we are providing a safe experience for your potential student thank you so much flynn for just reiterating your contact information and sharing that again and
Then also talking about safety because i do think um regardless of you know if your student chooses to that today they’re like oh i want to get involved in a fraternity sorority or again a few semesters down the road um safety always is a concern for parents families and supporters and just
Knowing that our community has standards and again has values and is extremely values based when thinking about that um and that also under your again under your leadership as a staff member there haven’t been um you know there’s just been a lot of really you’ve been very proactive and
Just um so has the community and really preventing harm and making sure again folks have those leadership experiences those career development those networking experiences in a really safe and inclusive space so perhaps see you into the community and you know it’s going to be great as we moved into the fall semester
Excellent well as we start wrapping up um we’re going to allow for if there’s any other questions whether you’re watching us live on the facebook or we’ve had some really really great questions from our attendees today who are joining us live on the webinar let that be i’m not seeing any right off
Hand but again we’ll if anything comes to mind there is no silly question um because again some we recognize some families may um family members may have been in a fraternity authority may have not may have watched things on tv may have no idea again we
Want to make sure we we assume that a lot of folks are coming to the umkc fraternity and sorority community um pretty clean of expectations and not knowing a ton of stuff so lynn has been doing a really really really awesome job at orientations this season you can see where where can students
Maybe like the next few times where can students whether they’re incoming or returning students see the greek communities coming up into the summer and fall yeah so most of our organizations are at new student orientations or if you don’t see the chapters of the councils you can stop by the office of
Student involvement table we have information about greek life there or our staff members can talk to you about that but we also have one of my favorite of welcome week events which is late night with the greeks that is the first friday um right before classes it’s right after move-in uh
We’ll have really fun things this year like a dj a mechanical bowl a rock wall food face painting all it’s just a fun carnival and a really great opportunity for students to meet members of our greek community but even if they’re not interested in joining greek life we
Encourage them to come out have a good time and get to know other students on campus yeah you know what’s great is that you know again those types of events um philanthropies some of the different social things um that our greek letter organizations run are open to our
Entire campus community we’d love for your student to consider joining our fraternity or sorority but just knowing that again that community presence is there that they’re doing amazing work on campus and that your student can even again just get involved through the philanthropies through some of the leadership opportunities some of the
Networking pieces um et cetera and that there’s always a friendly face at those events welcoming them um anything else you want to share lynn before we proceed to our next le or our last slide i think that’s pretty much it i do want to say i’m like super grateful for this
Opportunity to talk to you all today and i’m also super grateful to our campus leadership who is extremely supportive of the great community many of our leaders and you know staff members are greek and are always supportive but i always appreciate when administrators are supportive as you can
See in one of these pictures right outside the student union if and if you’ve been to orientation you see that our nphc students were featured through banners and i think that just shows the commitment that umkc has to serving and supporting our great community and so i just want to thank
You all for being here today and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any question no question is a silly question i’m here to support both your student and you through this process of joining a fraternity or sorority so thank you for the opportunity kim
Yeah yeah and that goes into i think our last slide about that support again anybody who’s ever seen me present whether it’s at orientation or in some of these past family talks we have these family talk sessions because we want to partner with our parents families and supporters to help your students be
Their best we recognize again you can’t force students to do things but you can strongly push them to say have you thought about joining um you know a cpc organization have you thought about joining a fraternity um are you interested in volunteering and service and you know
You did a lot maybe in high school or at a previous institution have you thought about dot dots or what’s your plan i see that you signed up for recruitment um you know what questions do you have how can i help you in making it the best experience possible you know those are
Examples and even in our parent and family orientation module and in some different um uh resources that we’ve shared with parents and families you can kind of think about what those questions are and we offer some opera some options ultimately again umkc parent and family programs lynn’s team all of us the
Administration we’re here to support you and supporting your student and whatever that looks like so we’ll leave it open for any other questions from our attendees or on our facebook and otherwise i’m going to end our live stream momentarily lynn thank you so much um again you’re over
Just a few cubicles for me so it’s so funny to do like a live stream but i’m really excited um quick shout out too um we will be having another conversation with lynn later in august august 12th um because we recognize that we’re doing this early in june because we’ve had a
Few orientations we’re getting it out in our parent and family newsletter folks are thinking about that but really in august we recognize that so many more people are gonna be like oh okay school’s starting in a couple weeks and what do i need to know so my student feels like they have
A home away from home and feel like they belong and our fraternity and sorority community are you know really great options to find that sense of belonging and to find that home away from home with folks who again have you know similar identities or similar values or just
Allowing for that networking to happen here at umkc and beyond so thank you thank you thank you oh oh we got a question so will the august meeting be the same content um the answer to that is we’ll do a brief intro with a little bit of
Information but then lin’s going to talk more about the recruitment piece and also what’s happening in august so lynn anything to add on that question yeah we’ll probably focus mostly on panhellenic recruitment ifc recruitment um and if we’ll probably also talk about nphc what they’re up to and sigma lambda gamma
What they’ll be up to in august but we’ll probably focus mostly on those ifc and panhellenic recruitment questions and talking about the logistics of that um but that’s kind of what we’ll talk about yeah yeah and we feel again that that’s a really helpful thing to be thinking about um in august versus
Trying to tell you in june every single logistic or things to be talking to your student about because that can just be overwhelming in the moment great i think that is it so i’m going to go ahead and stop our recording
