[Applause] The divine nine there are nine historical black greek letter organizations that make up the national panhellenic council collectively these organizations are referred to as the divine nine each of these fraternities and sororities is rich in history ties to one or more of these organizations may be found in many college educated black families
In the united states today nine of our students will go over the divine nine starting with alpha phi alpha first the divine nine we’ll be discussing is alpha phi alpha fraternity it was established at cornell university on december 4th 1906. the fraternity was originally created as a support and studying system for the
Minorities at the university but gradually became the first intercollegiate greek letter fraternity for african-american men they aimed to promote scholarships and love for all mankind and follow the model first of all servants of all we shall transcend all the second of the divine nine we’ll be reviewing today
Is the alpha kappa alpha sorority it was founded by ethel hegeman to be a support group for like-minded women who could uplift each other’s talents and strengths it currently has 1026 chapters in 48 states and nine countries their programs are built on five targets a call to action
Support for the wellness of women building economic legacy and supporting and participating in the arts and creating a global impact the third divine i will be reviewing is omega sapphire it was founded on november 17 1911 at howard university by three undergraduate students edgar love oscar cooper
And frank coleman it was the first international fraternal organization founded by an hbcu their aims are to promote manhood scholarship perseverance and uplifting approaches to their life under the motto friendship is essential to the soul view is the delta sigma theta sorority their colors are crimson and cream
It was founded on january 13 1913 by 22 college women at howard university since it’s beginning and it’s expanding to be the international having over 900 chapters in the country such as germany canada japan and korea the first time they performed a public act was when they participated in the women’s suffrage
March in washington d.c in march of 1913 the sorority follows the motto joe and sisterhood power in our voice surface in our heart it’s the faber sigma fraternity faber sigma was founded at howard university on january 9 1914 by the three undergraduate men by the names of langston taylor
Leonard morris and charles brown other famous alumni include richard sherman and malik yobai they organized the frat so they could better exemplify the ideals of brotherhood and service they desired to be enclosed in both devotions and views they followed the model culture for service and service for humanity
The sixth of the divine nine is zeta phi beta founded at howard university on january 16 1920. five women from howard university envisioned a warrior that would raise the consciousness of their people encourage the highest standards of scholastic achievement and foster a greater sense of unity among its members
These women believe the sorority elitism and socializing overshadowed the real mission of progressive organizations since founding zeta phi beta has historically focused on addressing social causes the seventh of the divine nine is sigma gamma rho sorority founded on november 12 1992. the sorority is a non-profit whose aim
Is to enhance the quality of life within the community public service leadership development and the education of youth are the hallmark of the organization’s programs and activities sigma gamma rho sorority incorporation has over 100 000 members with more than 500 undergraduate and alumnae chapters throughout the united states bermuda the bahamas
Canada and korea women may join through undergraduate chapters at a college or university or through an alumnae chapter after earning a college degree the eighth of the divine nine we’ll be speaking of today is the kappa alpha psi fraternity it was created on the 9th of january 5th 1911 at indiana university
At the time the black community represented less than one percent of the students so the fraternity gave african-american students a chance to bond and build scholastic excellence they serve the purpose of uniting and bonding menoculture patriotism and honor they follow the motto achievement in every field of endeavor
And strive for such the last of the divine nine we’ll be discussing today is ida feed theta fraternity it was founded on september 19 1963 at morgan state university it was created with the purpose of the development and perpetuation of scholarship leadership citizenship fidelity and the brotherhood among men
And they follow the motto building a tradition not resting upon one today it is america’s fifth largest predominantly african american social service and encompasses 250 chapters
