All right um so here we go um so welcome everyone um thank you for those of you who are joining us this evening thank you for those of us who are are listening at the comfort of your own home um we wanted to take this time out to
Uh let you know that we have this event going on this is sponsored by the edinburgh university center for diversity equity and inclusion office this is part of their pre-black history programming for their podcast series this is something that’s been going on going throughout the course of the academic year here at edinburgh
University tonight we’re going to present to you meet the greeks you we’re going to specialize in the fraternities in the nphc we’re going to dive more into that later in this uh episode here um once again this event is by edinburgh university and here are some of the organizations in the mphc
We have alpha phi alpha fraternity incorporated we have alpha kappa alpha sorority incorporated we have kappa alpha psi fraternity incorporated we have five beta sigma fraternity incorporated we have zeta phi beta sorority incorporated we have delta sigma theta and co incorp sorority incorporated we have sigma gamma rho sorority incorporated we have
Mega sci-fi fraternity incorporated as well we have iota phi theta fraternity incorporated so tonight we are going to be specializing with the fraternities here in the mphc so at this time i’m going to uh welcome our other guest my other host who is dr amani
Davidson if you would like to do a quick introduction of yourself let the good people know who you are and we’ll talk about the importance of african american fraternities sounds good my name is armonie davis i’m an edinburgh alumni i’m super happy to be back here and i’m
Doing this presentation with you all um and just really want to talk about the importance in the uh the history that we stand on as members of african-american fraternities not just what we stand for now but what we stood for um through all of our all of our histories
Across our organizations we have something mutual and bond it’s just the betterment of our people people who look like us african-american men african-american communities pouring back into different mottos different acts of service different acts of family different brotherhood different act of service and just really bringing a sense
Of community back together into our community helping our community progress overall um every organization has notable members i’m on a large scale we recognize um you see a few notable members from each organization position across the screen um but we also have a lot of hometown heroes people do the work every day
Um who i like to think like these men on these call um and pretty much the goal of this all is just again to just build community among african americans not just students on college campus um every fraternity when you join us in a national panhellenic uh council fraternity um
It’s a for life commitment so when you make a commitment to be an african-american a historically african-american fraternity you make it a commitment for the rest of your life um a commitment to your people people who look like you forever that’s just whatever principles you commit to that
You’re going to dedicate your life to serving in that capacity um so it’s not just about the notable men that you see across your screen right now but it’s those hometown heroes people who do the work um day in and day out um to make this world better for people
Who look like us because as we all know um there’s been systemic issues that we’ve been fighting um since the beginning of african americans here in america um and these fraternities have come together um to try to make that fight to be lead efforts in that fight along the way
Thank you very much for that for that lovely edition and i couldn’t i completely agree with you as well it’s about those hometown heroes we understand the legacy of each organization each organization has a many members that have impacted history in many different fields and many different stances throughout the course
Of their founding years and we recognize that not only has each individual each individual organization fraternity and sorority but also just these organizations they come together it’s there are times when we come together so we can stand up for our people as well as people because the goal of of most these
Organizations is to uplift human humanity up to you and to have different community service events that give back to the people as we go on to our next slide here i just wanted to let uh the good people out there listening to know the difference between
Ifc and nphc as well as the um and as well as different organizations that the divine nine are under so let’s dive into the national panhellenic council first this organization was founded in 1902 this is an organization that has um 26 national women’s sororities throughout the united states and canada
The organizations that are part of this are not uh associated with the divine nine which we will go into shortly next we have the interfraternal council this was founded in uh 1909 this is an organization that covers 75 different fraternities throughout the north the continent of north america
Ifc works to advance the academic mission enable fraternity organizations to grow and to thrive throughout collaboration and teamwork and provide an outlet for self governance and accountability and model and teach ethical leadership the reason why we talk about this is that for those who are interested in joining any one of these organizations
That you see here today it’s good to know that this is also run as a business it is a brotherhood it is a network it is a community but it also is run as a business and that’s part of something that we really want to share with you that
You’re going to have lifelong benefits but also understanding that especially when it comes to the divine nine the national panel like council this was founded in 1930 this is an organization that collaborates as an umbrella organization composed of historically black african american greek letter fraternities and sororities
This is all these organizations are also referred to as the divine nine and you can see them listed as below dr davis would you like to touch upon this as well yes i just uh what i would add is just that this is like a governing body as a way to bring
And strength uh the the numbers that we have as a as a divine man um so if you look around the the panhellenic council and a lot of uh white led white greek letter fraternities and sororities um there’s a lot of uh quantity but uh the van nas uh sweatshirt
Emphasizes quality of membership quality candidates people who are willing to make their life lifelong commitment to the organizations um and through that um we may not have a hundred members running across the campus but our impact is going to be twice as strong because we know what we bring to to the
Table with each individual member um so to make our impact a little bit stronger the divine nine comes together and it’s a governing body that’s just over campuses that allows us to work together in unity um to make our campus better or to make our communities better to make the
Country better the nation wherever we’re serving better um through unity and purpose so the national panhandling council brings us all together the governing body consists of all nine online organizations as members of the divine man and this allows us to showcase our strength in numbers um when
At times we may not have all those numbers thank you very much for it for that edition um as we go on to our next slide um for those of you whether you’re listening at home whether you’re joining us in our zoom chat here tonight this evening
Um please feel free to ask questions we want to keep the the chat open for any kind of questions that we would like that we could potentially answer as well so the the next question i just want to ask and have this like be be like kind of just breaking down these stereotypes
Are historically black organizations interracial the answer is yes each organization has become interracial over the different course of these years as well as the organization’s roots are historically black but they do have a collective member of different cultures of different ethnic backgrounds i didn’t want to stay out just due to
Our um we’re talking about inclusion and we are talking about equity that there are other also organizations outside of the divine nine that have latin america that are specifically latin american jewish and asian fraternities and sororities i also just want to mention that we have in our bottom left-hand corner
We have pi iota alpha which is a historically latin american organization we have pi delta psi which is a historically asian american fraternity and then we have alpha epsilon pi which is a historically jewish fraternity so the outside of the divine nine we also have these other inclusive organizations
As well but just getting back to the importance of these organizations when african americans would go off to college they did not have a collective or safe space to um be one with each other and they were all all they were oftentimes excluded from joining any kind of greek organizations
Due to the the racial barriers at the time um a lot of these organizations were founded in the 1900s earliest parts of the 1900s and how race was handled and viewed differently is a lot differently to how it is viewed now so like i stated earlier in this slide each
Organization has become interracial over throughout the course of the years so um outside of this organ outside of this meeting i’m a teacher so my teacher’s side of me came out and i just wanted to break down some of the the historically black organization term termology and the vocabulary terms
That you might hear different members tonight say or use or do that way if you’re interested into these organizations that you know what we’re talking about so i’ll just read them as you see them on the slide so we have an active member this is an undergraduate member who serves
Who has been initiated by their chapter paid local dues and national dues maintains the gpa requirements and serves on their chapter chapters active roster calls this is a unique vocal expression attributed to each organization crossing this is a term used by nphc groups to indicate that
A new member has been a fully initiated into that respective group or organization frat the term used by one brother and one brother to another brother and a fraternity to refer to another brother in the same fraternity intake or membership intake this is a term used to bring new members into an organization
Each mphc group determines when they will conduct intake or membership intake a legacy an in-house family member who crosses an organization that you choose to enter line individuals going through the membership intake process process together signs a unique display of expressions expressed by hand symbols each organization has a different hand symbol
Yard a term used by mphc groups to indicate the campus as now before we go on when we’re looking at some of these terms as we use them as we’re going to start introducing our representatives from each organization i just wanted to let everyone know just
Out of courtesy for those of you who are uh joining us tonight that um we ask that if you do see any organization throwing up a hand sign to try not to repeat it because it’s a part of the legacy it’s a part of the importance of each organization
All right so at this time we’re going to have a quick brief history about each organization after we’re gonna have a q a for the members of these different organizations um and we’re gonna and and i the host and dr davis the host we’re go we want the
Members of each organization if you could present the following um could you talk about the founders date the colors and the mission statement or motto and we’re going to go by historically historical order by founding year so at this time i’m going to pass it over to brother kimani fought farmer from
Slippery rock university if you could introduce yourself um what are you studying um what year of school that you are and talk a little about the organization so alpha phi fraternity incorporated is the first historically black fraternity organization you can take it away and if
I if i can interrupt can i also ask and um talk about why he chose i fell for fraternity incorporated yes of course hello everyone uh for those of you who do not know my name is kimono farmer i am a a student at ciproc university
A graduate student now um i crossed in the fall of 18 into i’ll file for study incorporated um so uh as you see on the screen the founding date for alpha from attorney incorporated is december 4th and 1906. uh our organization colors is black and old gold
And our fraternity model is first of all service of all we shall transcend all uh one of the reasons that i uh joined alpha phi trying to incorporate it uh was the model specifically um as well as the um the mission uh the mission statement
Um it really resonated with me and who i want to be as an individual and who i was trying while i was developing myself to become um in my college career so i was more influenced by what i like what i had to see and what i read about offer
Thank you brother farmer for that introduction about alpha fraternity incorporated at this time i’m going to pass it over to tyriq you can please talk about your organization and tell us why did you join your respective organization um thank you very much as you can see our founding date was january 5th 1911.
We were founded on the campus at indiana university bloomington indiana our colors are crimson and cream typically you might see red and white but this crimson and cream um our fraternity model is achievement in every field of human endeavor um the reason that i chose kappa alpha psi fraternity incorporated
Personally growing up there was a lot of men i was very active in sports um there are a lot of men active in my life i grew up in a single parent home my mom was a single mother um so a lot of men in my sports leagues
Coaches all different types of areas um help me out take me to practice all these good things um and as soon as i got older i started to realize those men were brothers of kappa office on fraternity um and then i realized that’s the type of man that i wanted to be not
Specifically that i wanted to be like them um but these are men that were in their peak of their careers um had their own families but still found a way to give back so gracefully so peacefully in a way that changed the whole community so
That is one of the main reasons i wanted to be a capital thank you tariq for sharing your story and thank you for presenting information about your organization thank you very much all right at this time i’m going to pass it over to dr davis to talk about omega sci-fi fraternity incorporated
Thank you i want to preface with everything that i say is that i’m not a member of omega sci-fi fraternity incorporated but i have a great deal of respect for the organization uh my mentor is actually a member of omega sapphire fraternity incorporated um strong presence in the city of pittsburgh
Um strong presence in the community um the men of omega sapphire fraternity incorporated were founded at howard university on november 17th 1911. their colors of the organization or uh royal pulpal royal purple and old gold and the organization’s motto is friendship is essential to the soul
And since i can’t tell my uh i don’t have a crossing story for a mega sci-fi but i can tell you my mentor told me attracted him to the organization it is just that the ability to connect um breathe and know that um your sense of purpose is
Is different than your life’s calling so you’re you’re what you offer to your community is different um than what your life’s work may be and to have achievement in both of those spaces to be able to connect and build relationships and all those spaces is essential to like the person
You’re becoming a person who you are and the moment you lose sight of who you are is when you lose your real connection to the world so that’s what attracted him to that organization thank you dr davis thank you very much all right i’m gonna pass it back over to
Dr davis once again we’re gonna be talking for the fact before the first time we’re gonna be talking about phi beta sigma fraternity incorporated dr davis take it away thank you um so i actually am a member of phi beta uh sigma fraternity incorporated we were founded at howard university january 9th 1914.
Our colors of organization are royal blue and pure white fraternity models culture for service service for humanity and what drew me to phi beta sigma is when i first arrived on the college campus i seen a lot of different um white fraternities and kind of what they were centered around
And a lot of it was just like more of partying and drinking that’s not what i what i came to college for not what i came to do um i played football and i found a sense of i had a sense of brotherhood on that team
Um but i think a big part of my life from when i was young and from to now um something that my parents are still doing with this value of doing service for other people um and i just was looking for that on campus and i saw it in the minified beta sigma
Um well they still knew how to have a good time i also seen connection back to who they were as an organization their purpose their programs and their visibility across campuses um i started off at slippery rock university finished up at duquesne university and the the commitments that they made
To both campuses were consistent um and they stood on their principles and their values um and that’s what drew me to the organization is that consistency and wanting to be a part of um a group of men giving back to their communities respectively no matter where we went
Thank you dr davis thank you um at the summer i’m gonna pass it over to uh johnny to talk about iota five theta fraternity incorporated good evening everyone my name is johnny gethers i am a member of io of outdated fraternity incorporated i crossed fall 2009 through the eight
Alpha chapter which is at penn state university and currently i’m part of beta omicron omega chapter which is the alumni chapter here in pittsburgh so i notified date of attorney incorporated was founded on september 19 1963 on the steps of her gymnasium at morgan state college now known as morgan state university
Baltimore maryland our colors are charcoal brown and gold gold our fraternity model is build a tradition not rest upon one and the thing that brought me into the organization was mainly our model so during my undergrad years at penn state iowa’s had just just um got started on campus
In um 2008 and what kind of attracted me to them was just to the fact of the model and seeing the potential in the growth that was going to happen within the organization so to this day with me being holding different you know leadership positions on a local
Or regional international level within a fraternity i see it as a way of saying that okay i’m making strides to create a tradition but i’m not sitting on one tradition i’m just making strides to continue just saying okay i’m gonna complete a goal and go to the next step keep moving keep
Flourishing and keep growing and that’s what the fraternity is still doing to this day our principles that we are known for are scholarship leadership citizenship fidelity and brotherhood and also within the organization we have different um national initiatives that we mainly hold true to our heart
Such as all of us saint jew and a big one that i mainly helped co-founded which is much more in the hashtag was which is a collaborative initiative with sydney gamerose order incorporated which where we actually can educate the community on for registration citizen review board jury selection home ownership and property taxes
Thank you very much mr gathers thank you very much so as as we go on to our next part of our presentation here tonight you’ll notice that each representative of their organization there’s a different reason why we all join but we’re called to join to that specific organization um so as you are
Listening and whether you’re at home or you’re joining us here on tonight on our zoom um if any of these words speak to you um there will be a time when we will we will put the contact information for each or each representative from each organization in the chat reach out to them
Start having those discussions do your research as well because if you feel called to that organization take that first step reach out because it will just it will change your life ladies and gentlemen it truly will so at this point in time we’re going to
Go to our discussion panel will be a q a um the next set of questions will be directed to you all who are joining us here today um from the different representations of each organizations you’ll see the questions appear on the screen we’ll take two to three answers per
Question so this is more of a discussion about these different questions so here is our first question what advice would you join website what advice would you give an individual who wants to join an organization so at this time if someone would like to come off their
Microphone mic you can just um let me know or you can send me a message in the chat as well well i could start it off the first advice i would give to an individual that wants to join an organization is to do their research so before
You even say okay i want to join this organization because they got cool colors i want to join this organization because they feel as though they get all the ladies and things like that man you gotta do deep research and feel this and see why this organization sticks out to you why do
You feel as though that you feel like you’re a particular fit for the organization uh and the reason why is research is important because there’s other when you do deep research you really get to see how different you know things that organizations have and it’s still within their brothers
To see if that’s if that fits within yourself as an individual so that’s why research is important thank you um what anybody else would like to add what kind of advice would you give to an individual who wants to join one of these organizations i’ll give my little tip attack um
Major one that he said was research uh but another thing that i found um was typical upon people that were interested which is okay in some aspects um you are going to be the same person you are before after you cross than before you cross um just because you have those colors on
Just because you have those letters on you might have a little bit more um spotlight on campus but those letters are not going to change who you actually are so just remember that thank you for those words um and just adding onto that statement i completely agree with what everyone has said tonight
Um so when you’re listening to this at home take these advice if you want to join these organization definitely take these things into consideration as we progress on to our next question um what are the benefits of membership can i have one last thing to that past
Lab before we move forward of course um i would just want to add like the the the idea of being um discretion um your journey is your journey your your research is your research um i wouldn’t have asked anybody to join a fraternity just because their friends are in a fraternity
Um i wouldn’t advise anybody to to want to do something based upon the representation that the organization has on their college campus these are these are um lifetime commitments so do your research ask questions to the people in organizations uh me being a member of phi beta sigma i wouldn’t go around um
Telling every every member of different fraternities that i wanted to join phi beta sigma um because it’s not discrete it’s not um it’s not professional and and um while we are we’re brotherhood is a social aspect all of our fraternities operate as businesses as well um so you want to
Make sure that you’re putting your best step forward and putting your by doing that it’s being discreet being professional um being authentically you um and doing whatever you can to showcase that you’re a great candidate that you bring value to whatever organization that you have um i’ll reiterate the point i said
Earlier it’s not about the quantity of members for these organizations um these organizations have existed for years and they’re going to exist for years to come um there’s not a cry for membership um it’s about but it’s about the quality of each member we want to make sure that
When you come to join any of our organizations that you bring something to the table you’re making us better um because we need the best people to make our communities better thank you once again dr davis thank you very much all right as we progress on to our next
Slide what are the benefits of membership i’ll go ahead and answer this question uh one benefit that i want to highlight is the connections and experiences that you get um like once you join like you get to meet uh several different types of people from all the way around the world and
Just have those different type of experiences so i’ll just be open-minded to that part of membership thank you i agree with that as well especially with the networking and the connection piece um i’ll speak on it in terms of my um experience with iota so with my organization being the youngest
You know black greek fraternity organization um there we still have living founders so a main benefit within being a brother is that i’m able to you know introduce and network and fellowship with my founders and such and also with fellowship with my founders that’s basically a big you know onset to say
That you get to learn more about the history of your organization and then also get to get the feedback of their experiences of what they went through when they became brothers or when they actually founded the organization and just to be able to you know put that to heart and take that
To heat and say that i was able to talk to one of my founders to learn more about my organization and also have that connection that i could instill to my heart forever and you know that could carry out to you as long as you go i’m the oldest brother here and i
Pledged in 1977 december 10th uh and cross day 101 a.m so i have the longest level years of experience and this is one thing i can say about the mphc i’ve known um i went to a campus that had lots of african-american people we had 1800 african american people on a
Predominantly white campus and we were very close as i got older through the years i didn’t really think about it till this last couple of years my first few jobs and my mercy professional jobs all came from the connections i made not just my fraternity but with the
Other organizations that i belong to you know one of my first jobs i worked uh i worked on an air force base and that that the gentleman who hired me there was a catholic for a summer job during during school i had um deltas who who walked me into social work and aka
Walked me into higher education and then over the years as i grew an experience and learned more that’s how i met these outstanding young men who are in this video and that’s how i met a lot of my my favorite colleagues along the way two of the people that inspired me three
Of the people who inspired me in my work we have us we have a large whole foothold in the world of chief diversity officers uh dr damon williams wrote the book the chief diversity officer clyde pickett who is uh dr clyde pickett who is a member of kappa alpha psi
Wrote a book about community college education my good friend james felton who’s working on his doctorate he’s a is a major chief diverse officer and then um also in in what what is so impactful about our experience as we learn more about each other we also learn an appreciation for everybody else
So amongst latino fraternity sororities my doctor michael benitez and his wife was a zeta they’ve given me guidance along the way too it’s a lifelong connection but the lifelong connection keeps growing and growing and growing and at six i’ll be 62 in 24 days so at 62
I’d have looked back on my career and i know that’s what helped me make it was to recognize those connections honor those connections and understand the value of what we all bring to the community thank you brother mitchell for that um i also just wanted to add one one more
Sentiment before we go on is just kind of touching upon what everyone said it’s just the idea when you join these organizations you’re exposed to other people who are part of these divine organizations and you realize that some people might be a little bit closer than you think i actually had the
Privilege to zoom with the past teacher of mine that i had in high school and um she told me that she was an aka and um now that as i like once after i joined alpha file fraternity incorporated and i learned about the akas and i was around the akas everything that i
Learned about them and what their organization stands for i saw on her and she even told me that she joined that organization because it reflected who she was as a person so the idea that she joined because she saw who she was into the organization it did not change who she was
But it was just the idea of just seeing those similarities and knowing that sometimes these organizations are they hit close to home um you know just being around such a legacy i mean even right now um we have our first african-american vice president kamala harris she’s also an aka seeing
The legacy being played out constantly day after day year after year we are going to uh progress to our next question here thank you gentlemen for your answers can i throw force one last thing for that slat yes i think the uh one thing that i really want to showcase the benefit of
Membership is the professional development side of it yeah um so every couple of years um memphis attorney has what is referred to as a conclave where we meet up meet brothers from all around the world um who are here maybe within your field of field you want to enter into
Um who have years and years of wisdom um so we might be seeing some of the younger brothers on this call but that’s a place where we get to go and network with uh with brothers who are dr mitchell’s age um and get the wisdom and experience that they’ve that they’ve gained over
The years poured into us um really share business not just business fraternity but the business of life um the best networking uh techniques different conference and professional development seminars that really pour back into who we want to be and grow as person um and just brings you closer and
Stronger to organization not just through brotherhood but through the purpose of the organization um even locally on campus is a sense of professional development um i stutter have a very bad stutter at times one of the things that my fraternity made me do and got me in the habit of
Doing was public speaking um it was embarrassing at first getting in front of people trying to lead an event talking about these initiatives in ways that we want to give back to the community with a stutter but in place of that stutter um getting into that space
Made it less and less active in the way i speak when i deliver messages so one of my biggest weaknesses became one of my biggest biggest strengths over the years because of the professional development that being a part of that organization offered me thank you dr davis thank you very much
As we move on to our next slide here um this is something that i think it’s important that we do share with people who are interested in each organization um what is the average cost and um it does vary from each organization for the price the financial the number
Each organization does have different gpa requirements nationally as well as their local chapters as well also at this time if everyone could just talk about if they’re a part of a graduate chapter or if they’re part of an undergraduate chapter and their gpa requirements um
And then i just want to share this while as i was making this presentation tonight i was feeling very inspired and i thought about you know the price that we all have to pay at some point in time i i know of an alpha brother who joined um back in the 1960s and
The price that he told me back then is the price i wish i could pay but you know things change and money the value of money changes but i came up with this quote and it says the financial cost is an investment into the legacy of the respected organization
By investing into the respected organization each member is investing into a lifelong brotherhood network connections that you will make into each organization and as i’m like listening to you all speak about why you join each organization the benefits i’m seeing this being played out and it’s um it’s a beautiful thing
So at this time if where did you everyone what happened i think uh aaron might have lost connection there but i could pick up where he left off um so if we could go around talk about the the the initial requirements that you have to join your organization um if you have
Insight to what the undergraduate price may be for joining your organization um if you could share that um and just talk about what you’re looking for in a respective member um so uh mr form if we just start with you and just have you kick things off here
Um and just tell us you know what you’re looking for perfective members and those initial requirements you’re looking for all right so um i am a part of the graduate chapter in erie uh kappa beta lambda um i i do not know what our current price is uh but i do know that
Uh for the college brothers like we are looking for somebody who has like a good standing gp gpa requirement um and we’re always looking for those who are standing out as leaders uh like within their campus community as well as their uh their local communities
Uh in general i’m sorry what was the uh the additional part you wanna be at i think you you hit it you said we’re looking for like that that grade point average what commitment and which what characters and qualities you’re looking for membership all right yeah
We balance things over to uh mr carson correct me if i’m saying it wrong i you said it correct thank you um so like dave said before the cost varies from people to people from grade to grade um i am an undergraduate member i am in my
Senior year i am the pole mark of the news data chapter at edinboro university um so our gpa requirement for kappa alpha psi is a 2.5 um and above that doesn’t mean uh 2.499 or whatever you want to say uh that means a 2.5 and above and strictly
Um usually the university has their own um gpa requirement for greek letter organizations as well and i think sometimes that’s basically a 2.0 the cost like i said varies from um grades class to class so just for example um i came into fall 17 i was a sophomore so
My price was 17.95 um so the longer you are in school um so say if it was a senior um you’ll be a a cheaper price basically because it covers throughout your collegiate career um so say you’re a second semester freshman or whatever like that your price is going to be
More expensive than that 1795 as me as a sophomore because it’s going to cover the rest of your collegiate career some things that i’m looking for or we are looking for in potential members leadership um the characteristic of well the willingness to just do um the willingness to learn
As well um just because we are on this platform doesn’t mean we uh put ourselves above anybody else we’re always willing to learn we’re always willing to work we’re always willing to give back and um i want to add something so that way people can have a university perspective so i’ve been an
Administrator and a greek advisor on four or five different campuses um while you’re meeting the requirements for the individual organizations the college is also looking to make sure that you you can be successful in the work so some of your colleges may have a great point that’s higher
Than the national grade point that the the organizations have and for the organizations one of the things that these gentlemen won’t say to you i’m old so i get to say it you know if you have a 2.5 you have all the money and you think you are doing everything
Well that doesn’t mean you’re going to get membership in any of the organizations you have to meet both um your requirements and and also their requirements you need to you need to approach this respectfully you need to approach it with dignity and you need to make sure that um you
Don’t have uh student code violations and things like that and it’s not that you can’t get in but it will it will be a much more rigorous acceptance process if you have some challenges that are going on at the university level because the university level might not clear you to
Go through a process either so you really have to think about that and a lot of young people don’t think about that in my time in in um in greek life and on the different campuses i’ve worked on the the price range goes from as low as 800
To uh to up to two thousand dollars and what uh mr costume was talking about it was correct they have sometimes they incorporate yearly um chapter dues in and yearly national dues and that’s why the price varies but um i want to clear up a misunderstanding that some young people have they’re out
There now especially on campuses where they’re not allowed to greeks it’s not the organization’s responsibility to raise that money for you it’s your it’s your responsibility to come to the table ready with your money come to the table ready with your letters of recommendation and come to
Your tables knowing what you want to do i’ve seen young people think that they’re being ready to be greek and they haven’t done any of their research so all of them talked about the research you need to do and i’m going to exit the call but i
Don’t and i don’t want to make it too serious but this is a very very important and serious endeavor that you’re thinking about when you’re thinking about being an mphc great you know you’re not joining a club you’re doing you’re joining a brotherhood or sister club and you need
To be really serious about that and before i accept the call gentlemen i have to say that um dean fleming is my very favorite delta i mean still oh lord have mercy my denim fleming is my very favorite zeta my mother is my very favorite delta i
Had to say that before i got off the call because i’d be in trouble with both of them and not mean yet another shirt so uh all right hook me up show me where to get a good zayla sir thank you guys so much i’m gonna exit
And let you guys finish thank you so much thank you thank you for joining us all right i think the the next um fraternity in in uh founding order will be a mega sci-fi fraternity incorporated unfortunately we do not have a brother of a mega sci-fi fraternity
Incorporated on the phone call with us tonight but before we exit we will share with you contact information um so if you have interest in omega sapphire incorporated if you’re doing your your uh your research and you stumble across more information where you want to seek out information from them
Um as you best prepare um to seek membership in any organization um we’ll pass along some contact information so you can reach out and ask questions um but again what i will say about them is that they’re looking for the same thing that a lot of us are looking for
Good moral character good standing i mean that you’re going to bring be an asset to the organization um if moving along from there um to be become a member of five beta fraternity incorporated need a bare minimum 2.5 grade point average um we want to see that you’re active on
Campus you want to see that you’re active in your community and that you’re bringing something unique to the table um something that’s going to help us the the betterment of our your respective chapter um in the organization overall um we want to see that you have you know
Uh high standards for yourself and that you’re willing to continue to grow um unless you’re open to being developed further when you join any organization and mr carson said this earlier we’re not asking you to change who you are but i i would bet money that every
Organization’s asking you to grow as a person and if you come into college or if you join a graduate chapter wherever you may be and you’re not willing to grow as a person that you’re not going to be someone that any of these organizations want any of
Our organizations that we want we want us we want you to grow we want you to grow with us and we want to help you we want to expedite your growth process we want to help you and be able to connect you to wherever you are
So we we want to see that you’re willing to put in those bare minimum requirements so that 2. that 2.5 grade point average is a minimum standard um those letter recommendations are a minimum standard um but we also want you to be able to showcase something that’s not on an
Application but it’s what most people are going to be looking for when you’re interviewed and what makes you unique what makes you valuable and what what makes you attractive well we would want you to be a membership of this um these organizations just had that’s just stand on the shoulders of so many
Great legends and then with that i’ll pass it off the mix together to talk about how it affected fraternity incorporated in terms of pricing like everyone said it does varies between undergrad and graduate members um in terms of a gpa requirement the gpa requirement to join iota is 2.5
And as the other brothers did state that other schools do have a requirement where you have to make a particular gpa to get to organization but mainly our organization is a 2.5 um along with that we do look for brothers that are that stand out within leadership
Um do a lot of community service and just also a person that’s willing to like just make a change and do the work and be are ready to put into work when they join an organization so we don’t want to typically get a particular person that just want to join an organization just
Because they want to have the letters on their chest we want brothers to be able to just do what they want to you know do what they have to do in terms of leading up to the legacy and the principles of the fraternity um also i noticed that in the chat it
Was a question about the difference between graduate brothers and if you have to join a graduate school to become you know a grand brother so there’s two ways for um to become a graduate brother within the organization so the first way to become a graduate brother within an organization is
If you’re a brother that’s already in an organization and you’re getting ready to graduate and transition on from your undergrad um chapter to go into a graduate chapter that’s the easiest way you just transition on to you you know you know the alumni status now if you’re an individual
That are interested in joining organization even though you graduated from undergrad you could still join that organization you don’t have to join you don’t have to go to grad school just become you know join the organization on an alumni status level the main thing that
You have to do if you want to become a brother and on an alumni status level is used to have a bachelor’s degree or an associate’s degree to join our alumni status thank you very much everyone for um talking about you know what you’re looking for in
Prospective members as well as the cost i also just wanted to put this out there just as a general statement for those of you who are when you do your research and you’re looking at the cost of each organization i’m just going to be very just open and
Honest do not pick the organization just because of the of what costs the less or what you can afford ask for help that was one thing that i learned through um saving up my money to be a part of alpha attorney incorporated i had to humble myself i asked for help
There were people who if you do ask tell them that this is something that you’re interested in like a family member or even like um even a mentor or someone that you’re very close with in college they will give you help it’s even like you know brothers in each respective organization
Um they tell you right away that you’re not alone in this and don’t let the price stop you so once again don’t pick the organization just because oh this or that organization is the cheapest or that’s what i can afford remember you’re investing into a lifelong legacy and as
Uh was said earlier if you do wait throughout the course of your time at your respective college and campus and yard you will find that the price does differ so once again these are lifelong investments everyone um but it’s in my personal opinion here as your host is it is worth it because
You are going to be joining a lifelong brotherhood network and even if you move to a city and there’s one brother and there’s two people there you have one brother there so just wanted to let you all know that it’s been really transparent um at this time if everyone could put their
I think aaron’s freezing up here again if anybody could take the time and put your uh your contact information like your organization your contact information in the chat um we want to be able to pass this along to anybody who may have interest in your respective organization
Um so they they have a good starting point for questions sorry about that go ahead dr davis all right i said it out uh i said i told him all right after everybody just you could just type it right in the chat um and then and if we could do if we
Could take the information from the chat and put it on the slide i don’t know if the chat’s recorded in a zoom session but we could throw it on like one blank slat at the end um that people who are watching they can log on and figure out
If they want information for any particular organization um who to contact and where to contact just in case the chat doesn’t pop up in our zoom recording yes i’ll put that i’ll put that in there and i’ll make a special slide for that as well um also um each
Reach out to each member of the organization remember like discretion is key when you’re doing these so if you reach out to two different members from two different organizations it’s better just to keep those contacts information between those two individuals and not saying like hey i’m thinking about that wonder hey i’m
Thinking about that one discretion is key and also just respecting the privacy of each organization if they do tell you information they are trusting you that you’ll keep it all right so become part of a legacy and start this legacy with you within your future family um it’s a beautiful thing to
Just to know that when your son and or uh daughter they go to college that they’ll be a part of this and it’s not even just for the fraternities but for everything in the denim like just become a part of this legacy um as we as i see this information is
Being put here in the chat um i will put this into our um in a separate slide so that way for those of you who are viewing this you will be able to um learn more about the contact information reach out to those people in the respective organization
All right at this time i just want to just say some closing statements here and just some if there’ll be a time i’ll just let everyone just give a final piece of advice um so first of all i just want to say thank you to edinburgh university

Pieces of advice i would just like to add um just like like i got some personal advice from my personal experience um don’t be afraid to approach or contact us uh we are uh nine times out of ten like we are open uh to hear you
Hear you also like that so just um if you are if you are interested uh make sure you like you take that step and make sure you contact us i’ll say um do not be afraid to ask questions and then also once you get your research and
After you get the questions that you asked answer follow your heart mr colson would you do you have any last piece of advice for um anyone at this time um last thing um just do your research um like any you don’t want to go into a job interview and don’t and know
Anything about the job um not to say this is specifically a job but um do your research know a little bit about um each organization that you might be interested in because you never know what they might come back in x what do
You know um if you go in there and say i don’t know anything how do you how were you interested in something that you don’t know anything about um so just that’s just the main thing for me all right thank you very much everyone um i’m gonna put the contact information up here
In a short second uh but thank you gentlemen for joining us tonight um we appreciate it and thank you i know we’re all we all have our own professional lives i know um some of us are still students in school uh some are coming from long work days
But this is part of the work of the organization um this is part of what we do just trying to uplift the light that we want to see in the world so thank you gentlemen um as you’re on your way out i’ll post the uh contact information up and let this play
Um for just a couple minutes so that way when people are at home and they’re watching they can see uh get in contact with you all So At this time you will see on your screen the contact information from our fellow members of their respective organizations i’m going to leave this up here for a little bit um once again thank you all for tuning in to another episode of edinburgh university diversity and inclusion podcast series
