Our wonderful team members from the office of fraternity and sorority life for those of you who may not be able to stay for today’s whole webinar don’t worry we are going to be recording today’s session and we will be posting it on the website for you all to enjoy
Later um and again thank you guys so much for joining us today we greatly appreciate your time and at the end of the presentation we will make time for any questions that you all may have to make sure that you can get those answered today but without any further ado
Katie and corey i’m going to let you guys take it away hello everyone so we are just pulling up our powerpoint presentation that we’re going to show uh you all and just follow along with um keep us on track but uh welcome to this panthers perspective uh my name is corey
Esquenazi i am the director of fraternity and sorority life here at high point university hello everybody my name is katie borisa i’m the assistant director of returning sorority life as well as the resident director of greek village uh so uh as you can see uh there’s a few things that both of us
Do within the office i am the primary advisor for our panhellenic council and our mpht council and katie yes i’m the primary advisor for our inner fraternity council and as i said as the resident director of greek village i also supervise our greek village resident assistants and we have a
Student worker who works in our office as well as our student intern right here um so there’s a few words that we have bolded here and those kind of you can read along as you see there but the main purpose of our office is to work with our students and provide a great
Experiential learning opportunity for them um our office helps our students create great opportunities for community development as well as we are the students we are here to help our students advocate um on our students behalf to the greater university um we’re all about personal and professional development
Um and that’s once we get to the end of the the presentation we’ll talk about some of the benefits of joining our fraternity and sorority community um we definitely strive to have a very inclusive environment within our organizations and we’re all about partnership and creating the best fraternal experience for the students
That join one of the fraternities sororities here on this campus so what we are striving towards in this is our vision statement it’s great opportunities for our students especially our young students and going through their collegiate involvement creating those opportunities for inspiring leaders we’re also about challenger challenging our members through academic
Excellence holding our members accountable uh through our accountability boards excuse me um and creating meaningful engagement opportunities uh that advance the fraternal experience as a whole these are our values for the fraternity and sorority life office so prior to the covet pandemic we were able to meet together as a greek
Community and our fraternity and sorority members came up with these values that represented what they felt was a representation of their greek community as a whole so community growth as a person as a leader as a student leadership opportunities in and out of the chapter within council leadership just on campus in general
Um service community service giving back to the greater community whether that’s through a greek organization’s philanthropic endeavors or whether that’s through impacting the high point community as a whole and then diversity equity and inclusion we’ll also typically use the word multiculturalism as well to kind of round those three words together
Just making sure that we are educating our students on having diversity in their organizations how to understand what those three different words mean and how to be inclusive overall as a community on this campus so getting into a little bit of statistics we have about 1500 greek students on our campus
Now these are numbers with current grant with current seniors from the spring 21 so maybe a little bit smaller now but approximately about 30 of the campus is greek affiliated and from this point we’re going to touch on our three councils that we have on high points campus here so i will share
With the with you all the accounts that i advise so the interfraternity council or ifc um this has six organizations on our campus that fall under this council so we have beta theta pi delta chi kappa alpha order kappa sigma pi alpha or pike and sigma nu okay so these six
Fraternities as i said are members of the interfraternity council so what that means is that their groups fall under a higher real um structure on the national level so these six fraternities have um you will see um have greek houses typically they do have a formal recruitment
Process in the fall and in the spring which we will get to at the end of our presentation and so the event in this photo here are men on our inner fraternity councils they represent all six of the fraternities and their job is to oversee the structure and process so if you choose
To join in ifc fraternity when going through that recruitment period you would work with these men to help put on that experience as well as supervising different events that this council will put on throughout the academic year so i’ll talk a little bit about uh the two councils that i advise
Uh so the first council is our national panhellenic council then ph.d um so the mphe uh is comprised of our black greek letter organizations as well as some of our culturally uh specific organizations and so we have four of the divine nine currently in sweden divine nine that there’s nine
Nationally recognized nphe organizations and so on our campus we have alpha kappa alpha sorority incorporated delta sigma theta is already incorporated cap alpha psi fraternity incorporated zeta phi beta sorority incorporated um and then we have an associate member currently um which is not a member of the uh the national panhellenic council
Broadly speaking but on our campus they are an associate member and that’s lambda pi chi sorority incorporated currently we also have a few interest groups that are looking to expand on our campus and become part of our community alpha phi alpha fraternity incorporated and then psi sigma 5 multicultural fraternity incorporated
Our last council currently that we have at high point university is our college panhellenic council the cpc um and so the organizations that are currently represented within this council are alpha chi omega alpha gamma delta kappa delta phi mu sigma sigma sigma and zeta tau alpha
And so i wanted to share with you some of the statistics of the organizations represented in our community and so the first thing that you see is our um the averages of our fraternity and sorority gpa and so the all greek cumulative gpa uh this uh this is for this these gpas represent
All of our organizations within all of our councils and this is for the spring 2021 uh semester and so you see the all great accumulated gpa is at 3.281 the or the average of our ifc cumulative gpa for this semester was two or this past semester was 2.954
Um the mphe and phd organizations their cumulative gpa was 3.408 and the panhellenic community uh cumulative gpa was 3.322 um the other things that you see down there the community service and philanthropy dollars represent the 2019 uh 2020 school year um community service and philanthropic dollars raised by our organizations was
Greatly impacted by covet 19 and so we list we were listing the most recent um for a full in-person semester with uh i guess normal activities that we would be having um as i mentioned previously we do have a greek village so at this current time there are 12 greek houses
11 of them are currently utilized by either fraternities or sororities within the ifc council and within the panhellenic council one of those houses is currently um just an unfair unaffiliated unoccupied house but it is still in the greek village just general students live in that house
Um one thing just to touch on that is new that will hopefully be completed in fall um is our nphc plots so that is a space for nphd organizations to come together and gather so that will be built within our greek village as well in between
Two of our houses there so that will be a space for nphc to be able to collaborate as a council and as chapter members okay so to follow up on some of our websites and social media that you will want to know of and be
Able to utilize and look at so just our general website at this time it does have last year’s data on it so i do apologize for that we are in the middle of revamping it and making sure all the up-to-date data is on there so that will be coming soon but that
Website can be utilized for any general information that you have recruitment dates our grade reports are listed on there any other details that we share with the general student population you can find on our website hpu connect now you might not know what this is yet if you haven’t come on to campus
For your orientation yet or for your um time where you when you visit campus but hp connect is a website that you’ll be able to utilize as a student whether you join a greek organization or not this is where we list all of our student activities on the
Involvement fair different things to do on campus food trucks different activities going on that’s also where our organizations will list their events as well if they are public or if they’re for general members that’s what we utilize that website for and then our social media so make sure
You either screenshot this or write these down to follow so hpu fsl hp underscore fsl is obviously our fraternity sorority life page but we are we will post general information regarding all of our councils and different highlights and things of that nature nphc underscore hpu is our npc council um
Hp panhellenic and hp underscore ifc those are the three different councils um if you are interested in joining a panhellenic organization they’ll be posting um the link to register for recruitment same with ifc and then nphc if you do have any questions and you are interested in those organizations i would recommend
Messaging that page because they will be able to speak on all five of the organizations in that council now what um so like i mentioned at the beginning of this presentation we wanted to talk about some of the benefits of joining a fraternity authority here at high point university
So we just highlighted a few things down at the bottom but first attorneys and sororities are a great way to get get involved on campus they help our students build community and it makes you know a space that might be larger a larger experience for some students coming into
The university feel much smaller it’s it’s also known to be a great retention tool and so students who join these organizations find that place and they feel connected to the university also these organizations that you’re joining they last a lifetime i can tell you from my own personal
Experience i’m a member of an ifc fraternity and katie is a member of panamanic sorority herself and we’re still very actively involved in our organizations you know even though it’s been some time since we graduated and so um generally speaking members of fraternities and sororities also have a great opportunity to network and
So when you’re looking for that first job out of college being a member of a fraternity and sorority is a great way to have that network network expand that network and uh you know help you find that first job out of college great so just a couple of things to note
If you are interested um obviously you’re here so you have some sort of interest um so these are just the dates that we wanted to make sure you were aware of so ifc recruitment registration is not open yet it will open july 26th if you’re interested in joining an ifc fraternity
There is a formal recruitment process it’s those dates listed there august 30th through september 3rd there may be some pre-recruitment events that are a little less formal and structured it’s still early in our summer planning so those dates will be continue to be organized and then once we have those finalized they will
Be listed on our website on all of our social media as well so keep an eye out for that for nphc as we discussed earlier they have a process called intake so it’s not a formally structured process it is on a chapter by chapter basis so each individual organization will host their
Own interest meetings at a time frame that works for their chapter so that could be in the fall or in the spring so if you are interested in joining a phd organization and you already know which one you are interested in you can reach out to that organization to gather information
If you know you want to join an mphd organization you’re not sure which one i would just encourage you to do some of your research on the chapters that we have on our campus and see what you think would be the best fit for you and connect with them
Or you can just message as i said nphc underscore hpu and ask if they have information on when when those different organizations will potentially be having their interest meetings and then for panhellenic recruitment registration is already opened um so if you go on to the panhellenic instagram page the link is on there
It’ll also be on our website as well um the link for it is actually already on our website it says fall 2020 but it will still bring you to that same registration page so you can still use that link as well and then the primary recruitment dates for panhellenic are september 3rd
Through the 5th and as well as the following weekend september 11th through the 12th if you have any questions on that feel free to connect with us and so uh you know now we’re gonna probably open up the floor but once again thank you for coming to this
Presentation my name’s right there you can see my email address uh feel free um to take a screenshot of it but it’s also up on the website there’s my cell phone or my my office number excuse me um and then our office hours are 8 30 to 5 pm monday through friday
Here in this lane student center and then this is me as well um so if you have questions pertaining specifically to ifc feel free to reach out to me if you call the office of student life general number and ask for fraternity and sorority life they
Will forward you us forward you to us as well so if you don’t screen grab this and you forget our phone numbers and our names just feel free to call the student life office and they’ll be able to connect you with us as well okay awesome well thank you again corey
And katie so much for sharing all of this wonderful information um yeah about to say we’ll definitely take some questions now um we have received a couple questions already but for those of you who are here if you have any other questions please feel free to throw those in to the chat
Because you definitely want to make sure that those questions get answered um but we did receive a couple um already um so how early can a student choose to join one of these organizations can they join like as early as freshman year do they have to wait till they’re a junior
So yes uh so that’s a great question um and so first i’ll start with our mphc council um for for those organizations um they tend to uh it’s very chapter by chapter basis uh depending on uh when like the organization’s needs they may take students their first year or spring of their
First year um but some organizations especially in our mphd council will uh will look to take sophomores or juniors our ifc and panhellenic organizations you can join as early as fall your first year in college okay great um so we did get a another question
Um from bailey in the chat um what is the general cost for joining a sorority or a fraternity um here at high point so that again will depend on each individual organization one thing i like to share with potential students is your first semester will be a little more expensive than the
Remaining semester so kind of like that pay pay-to-play fee right so if you join a soccer team you’re going to buy a soccer ball you’re going to buy knee pads you can get cleats you’re going to buy your jersey so that’s kind of what to expect that fall semester can range anywhere from
I would say maybe 500 800 dollars for that first semester you’re going to be buying your pin or your badge um and your new member education programming all the different things that you have to have that one time your initiation fee that’ll happen that first time in the semester then second
Semester and on you will simply pay your chapter dues again those can range anywhere anywhere from that um 800 to 1200 range just depending on what your chapter covers so if you’re in an organization and all of your events all of your sisterhood brotherhoods all of your t-shirts
All those things are covered you might see a higher dues if everything is you know optional if you don’t want to buy the shirt or if you don’t want to go to x event then dues might be a little bit lower so that’ll just depend on the individual organization
And if you go through the recruitment process or the intake process each of those organizations should provide a cost layout analysis of their specific organization just following up just following a little up on that as well those costs can vary semester to semester some organizations add or subtract
Their dues each semester depending on what they do some organizations um tend to they might have opportunities where dues get like less expensive as the semesters go on some organizations also have payment plans so you know if you can’t afford uh like uh direct costs they can like create a
Payment plan with you to make sure that you can afford the organization okay great thank you guys so much for that information uh we do have a another question i’m coming out of the q a this time from catherine um will sorority or fraternity recruitment um be in person this year
That is a great question that we all hope to know soon um obviously with the unknowns and the fluidity of kova 19 pandemic um obviously our 100 hope would be 100 in person but it could also be on the other on the spectrum where it is 100 virtual
Last year we did have a 100 virtual process for both panhellenic ifc and nphc recruitment and intake obviously with some of our changes on campus again it is up in the air for potentially a hybrid process just with the sheer number of students that do go through the recruitment process
Specifically for panelinic and ifc it would just depend on what the university allows us to do at that time so please just keep looking on our website and make sure that you um check our social media as well once we have that updated information if you are already registered
For panhellenic recruitment at this point or if you register for ifc recruitment later in the summer we will send out emails to those students who are already registered for them to know if it will be in person or if there will be a hybrid piece or whatever that looks like so
Unfortunately we don’t have the answer at this time but we hope to have that sooner as we get through the summer time and one more thing uh we are working with our students to plan for all three options just in case so no matter what the experience is going to be
We’re very confident that the the students putting on the events and with the help of our office are going to run a very smooth um uh beneficial experience okay awesome and again thank you guys so much for this awesome information um again we want to encourage you guys
If you do have any other questions please go ahead and throw those into the chat or the q and a um but the last question that we have for you guys currently is of course each organization has their own individual requirements but are there any requirements that the
Students have to meet for the university itself like do they have to be in good academic standing or you know anything like that um to be able to go ahead and join one of these organizations yes that’s a great question so um again council specific um so as far as the academia side
To go through panhellenic recruitment there is not a specific gpa requirement for the panhellenic council however that being said each chapter in panhellenic does have their own gpa requirement i typically say they do look for students with a 2.7 or higher but again that is dependent on each individual organization in panhellenic
For the interfraternity council they require a 2.500 gpa to go through ifc recruitment those gpas will be checked to make sure that you are in that academic standing for ifsd and then for nphc they as well typically look for a student with a 2.500 gpa if you are a first-year student and you
Do not have a current college gpa you can use your high school gpa if you are a transfer student or you go through summer advantage this summer and you have a college gpa they will look at that gpa versus your high school gpa for eligibility and then as far as convict stamping apologize
As far as conduct standing um the only requirement is you cannot be on disciplinary probation with the university of conduct office um unless it is an extreme circumstance we typically do not share conduct records with the chapters that is something they can request once you already join the organization but as far as
The joining process we do not share anything conduct related okay awesome again thank you guys so so much for coming and sharing with us all of this wonderful information about fraternity and sorority life here at high point university i know that’s something that a lot of students are always interested in
And you know really hoping to participate in as part of their college experience and most importantly we want to thank all of you guys who came and attended the session today again um if you kind of want to go back through this information or maybe track down corey or katie’s information we are
Going to be posting this video to the website within the coming days we also encourage you guys to join us next week on tuesday at 4 p.m for our panther perspective on campus activities here at high point um non-greek related campus activities here at high point
But again thank you all for joining us have a great rest of your day and we’ll see you next week bye thank you so much thank you
