Perspective uh from the word of god yes all right well it’s another thursday another thursday and you know we’ve been going at this for a little while yes yes yes pretty much most of the year yeah how you feel i’m i’m tired i’m so tired keep on pushing that’s right that’s what
We do i’m a stepper i keep on stepping amen um i’m like that well thank you all right i’m not gonna take credit my daddy used to say that a lot i’m gonna that’s what we do really yeah yeah yeah and you know the chips don’t fall too
Far from the tree all right uh what’s topic today our topic today sir walter we want to know if um you think that uh christians should pledge or join forces with fraternities and or sororities okay very popular subject yes um what do you think i well i don’t think they should
Why because well there are a lot of factors of course what i came along with and what they told us okay you don’t want to get involved with all the pledging because they’re you know the hazing and you know all the the various things that people have to
Go through to just you know enter into these uh institutions if if you will um that it’s not um it it could be detrimental to one’s health or you know and life yeah and life you know we we’ve seen different things you know in the news um was that one band member
That was yeah florida and me uh i was there he was there i sure was okay it was they were competing against my college at bethune cookman university yeah okay famu florida a m a a m florida a and then i okay anyway famu aeronautics and mechanical university
Anyway they was hazing that boy in the band and uh they beat him uh and uh he died right there on the bus yes it’s a ritual i went through that in college myself in the 80s you know um you know there was there was a banned fraternity
Kappa kappa psi i think it is okay and uh i actually they tried to get me to join really you know but my parents you know was totally uh against fraternities and we were taught to not be a part of sororities and fraternities anyway if you were krogic if you were apostolic right
You were you were forbidden now the baptist they didn’t they didn’t teach too much against it because a lot of them a lot of my baptist friends are part of fraternities okay yeah um but uh they they spoke against it now here’s the issue though
A lot of a lot of times our forefathers spoke against things they really didn’t know the the origins of things so they didn’t know that much about it right they just they just went by what uh the ramifications or what was going on at that day at the time like for instance myspace
Was a no-no uh you know when they when they came on the scene the pastor was like shut it down this is of the devil right and then a few months later everybody all the pastors had to get my page so they said the same thing about
Facebook and then twitter and all this now they all got so they they look at the horror stories of of craigslist on how prostitutes were selling their bodies and mm-hmm and uh and pedophiles are on craigslist don’t own craigslist because you know but they don’t realize a lot of
Good things happen okay on the flip side though my daughter wanted to ask me just last week about fraternities because she was going to my nieces or sorority sorority yeah okay now the we know the sororities is about women uh but actually it’s still called fraternity it’s it’s actually the white
Fraternities still call it fraternity okay the national fraternity league or whatever of all fraternities they they call it a fraternity okay uh just in general in general right that’s really because you’re fraternized with each other right the women later on decided that uh or someone in the university coined the
Phrase sorority because they didn’t they thought that fraternity was too masculine of a name okay but but the organization at large of opportunity still recognized fraternity even among women’s sororities okay yeah give a little history that’s come on now i was in college one time oh we’ll praise jesus yeah
I went for the lunch and i stayed for the pot okay yeah beside the fact of what how you grew up and what your parents taught you was that your only reason for not getting involved the only reason i didn’t get involved because my parents i knew nothing about the origins of
Fraternities or sororities okay so i later on i realized the history of it and i said oh okay yeah i probably needed to not be a part of it although though a lot of fraternities and sororities now socially they do good for the community right and see that’s the other thing
Because people are like okay well why not like for instance if there are you know if they pledge into a fraternity or sorority that is not doing not all that you know i’m not sure if there are any that do this but who don’t either do the hazing or as
Badly you know as as the other ones do then they’re like oh why not get involved with it you know we don’t we don’t you know um have you go out there and doing something crazy and jeopardizing your life and or your health this is just a way of networking
You know people so what would you say to that absolutely uh do you have to join something in order to do social work um i would say no because we had a guest on this show who was an openly uh gay person a lesbian and she said
That the lgbt community is good for the community well do you have to be gay to be good for the community you don’t have to join the lgbt community to be to do good in the community right you don’t have to join a fraternity sorority to
So that you can do good things you just do something for the red cross do something with them march in the streets do something with the action network and the rainbow coalition and other things like that you don’t have to join a fraternity just for
Social reasons right um so part of it is you know as part of his ignorance on because they see all the good that is due but jim jones did a lot of good as well and then he had you drink the kool-aid right okay and you see what happened after that um
But we have to go through the history of uh okay i wanted you to get to that yeah the white the white started it and then we we we blacks joined forces the five beta capital was the first first uh fraternity period okay 1776. okay you know what else happened that year right
Mm-hmm yeah okay well the college of william and mary uh in williamsburg virginia that’s that’s where the first fraternity started okay then after that the kappa alpha society now they were more of a social actually because the uh the phi kappa phi beta kappa were a literary group
Okay but they were secret just like the mace the freemasons really right and though so there’s some people who say don’t join the fraternities or sororities because they’re connected to the they’re like the freemasons well the freemasons and the fraternities they actually fought they were they were not together and one
Was jealous of the other one so they the fraternities want to expose the the masons and vice versa and then that’s that’s what caused you know some rips and then came the sigma pi uh phi and then delta phi and then all these three form the the unions of triad a union triad
Okay and it’s spread through all of the colleges throughout the united states okay okay and then the alpha delta phi and then the the phi epsilon and it goes on and on and on but their purpose is uh they they have a model they have a ritual they have a badge okay
They have principles of high idealism okay and a bond of friendship and and camaraderie that’s the whole purpose of fraternities okay sororities but then came the black fraternities and sororities in the early 1900s they came together uh for social reasons uh to fight for uh equality equality you know during the
Days of jim crowism and what have you good cause okay but they borrowed from the greek and so not looking at the origins of things yes it tends to be a paganistic thing okay and and some people on facebook said well they’re kind of worshiping gods false gods and
In actuality if you look at the origins this is true okay so we have we have we buy clothes and shirts that have these emblems on it and don’t even know what these emblems mean this is so true but we bought it because it looks nice and don’t even realize that this there’s
Some demonic worshiping thing that we have on but it’s just well we’re doing good in the community with a devil on our back right but if you look at the sparkly movie school days was i was the average black person first look at what college life was
Yes fraternity yes and then we got drumline and stomp the yard and all these wonderful pictures to tell you about the college life and a lot of it was based around hazing okay and uh if you don’t why would you join an organization that that you have to uh the initiation
And all that stuff be a part of and and um a lot of beatings some some have got beaten so severely that they died right and and then uh why be a part of a group that you that you um want to ride rival against another group
And then another group it’s really like a war almost and it’s and some of the secrets societal things are still going on in these fraternities i just i just say you know don’t i don’t i prefer not being part of it my daughter said it’s a bunch of mess i
Don’t that i don’t want to be a part of like thank you thank you really now what is this the divine nine the divine nine is a is a national pan-hellenic council for all of the popular black colleges uh black uh fraternities and uh uh martin from martin luther king
To coretta scott to mayor mccloud bethune jesse jackson all these all these prominent black people in society were part of these organizations alpha phi alpha alpha kappa alpha kappa alpha phi omega five size uh sigma gamma rho iota five theta it goes on and on and on these were nine
That was part of of the nine black fraternities and sororities and very strong uh very historic i think the first one goes back to 1906 or something like that okay and uh they they are very influential you know in our lives today as far as black fraternities and sororities okay so if
You can sum it up for a christian why should they not pledge or get involved in fraternity or sorority well i kind of summed it up by you know by all the things that said that what they what they their origins are i but i like what i like with this group
This uh website here talked about the the uh um most colleges have branches of christian organizations such as intervarsity campus crusade and navigators okay these are these are christian organizations that serve the same purpose but do they have models and all of that models yeah they have a model jesus christ
Is their model and they’re social okay beings is to help the community they do the same thing in the community and their origins of our of christian values not of some greek god okay that we’ve seen on tv and so on our history books so if you’re gonna if you need to join
An organization joins something like this that please that’s pleasing to the lord not so much an organization where you know you’re going to be competing possibly the hazing issue and hazing is just it’s discouraged among the colleges yeah right and even the fraternity said we don’t hate we don’t hate
But but we know that this football player you know that we’ve been hearing about who called this half black hat white football right there you go call them a half negro what have you said i’m gonna kill you but you know that’s all a part of it yeah it
Is somebody else just came out with another football player yeah on the chicago bears see there you go so this is still going on so why be a part of it yes you know i’d say walk away from it you don’t really need it just do do do good work in the community
Do our poor people’s campaign give us some money that’s right so we can go out there and help the people there you go yeah yeah listen we got uh we got to get out of here uh we uh you’re gonna do your own show i’m so excited we’re gonna talk about it more
