It’s been quite a weekend he has I think they’re burning that Midnight Oil Man for the past several days um just welcoming alumni that haven’t been to Brockport for as long as 30 plus years and for the first time I’ve been back you know to campus
Man so I think you know we’re a little tired right now but you know tired moments finds this is delightful treat right and um I think man I want to talk with y’all just about the experience you had brewed you had a chance to come up and uh and
Check us out I know it’s been been a minute not too long but it’s been a minute man since you’ve been back and uh Ike and I man you know amen they worked us this weekend bro we uh we’re busy man it’s busy it was busy work y’all talking about man
I gotta send an email to the committee what type of work are y’all I’m glad that you understand about being in the committee was no Cake Walk no I wasn’t okay but it was no Cakewalk you coming back next year Dean hey no no no
No no no no no no hey you know what I’m saying no sir I think Brewers enjoying herself boy he had to he had to lift a finger Hey listen you know this brood didn’t say nothing you know what my mentors in this pizza my mama missed me said he said I never
See you like this he’s like you didn’t say much uh-huh you joke around this this you know even when stuff was supposed to clean up you didn’t say nothing to anyone yeah I said I came up in peace I said I said sometimes people think that I’m uh you
Know I’m saying I’m gonna say things I just came and chill man you know what I’m saying I was good I was still flying that day man I’m not gonna say nothing you know what I’m saying I was just gonna chill enjoy the Brotherhood hey how did it feel to just enjoy the
Brotherhood this time um it was great man it was great um you know I get to see some of my Founders man um it’s amazing man to see these brothers um and and sometimes when they talk sideways man we are exactly like them you know what I’m saying um you know doctors
You know up there man and you know when they speak and then they’d speak eloquent and uh so when we when we have our brother who talk and we laughing and joking man they are exactly like we are you know I’m saying there’s nothing it’s nothing changed but the age
That’s it you know so it was amazing man it was amazing yeah we’re gonna talk about the hot dogs and burgers though you say that say that for the end man we’re Batman we need to get Bama on here man you know his internet be choppy man
Alabama is always doing at least two things at once so he probably on a zoom call right now on a zoom call a phone call but man it was amazing it was good bro I enjoyed seeing a lot of the young Bros yeah insane I think that for me
When we have our reunion we don’t really have much of the young Bros so this was yeah this was uh this was a time when I see so much of them in one space you know which is cool yeah I agree man it was um you know
Definitely uh being able to kind of reconnect with some of the younger Bros and um you know when they were on campus uh that was a time where I was kind of like focused in on work and uh not really you know paying too much attention to what
Was going on on campus so you know just uh to get a chance to kind of sit with them and you know and kind of chat it up I mean you know I think um the Highlight for me this weekend was you know on uh was that Friday night yeah Friday night man
Um that Brotherhood smoke where we just got a chance to kind of get together man really just chill out you know have a couple drinks some cigars but but really just kind of you know um you know be in the same space with brothers and and the
Fact that it was really you know an intergenerational experience man I mean we had you know everybody from our Founders there to um you know some uh you know uh was it uh uh spring 20 right uh that that came through um the the day of covet line as I would call them
Right and um you know just to kind of hear everybody’s stories and hear what brothers are doing and um see the strides that they’re making and you know how you know everybody is finding success in their own way and how some of the younger brothers are having
Some challenges you know on that on that path in that Journey and just you know being able to kind of pour into them and like share um you know some thoughts with them and that that whole experience was just really it was surreal um so you know to be able to kind of
Capture that those moments and uh you know really just kind of continue to build you know you know what’s really cool um and you know a brother that we haven’t uh that hasn’t returned back to Brockport or Upstate New York in over 30 years right you know um you know we all
Had a chance to kind of get to you know to to meet him who was that Brother Ray deer man no that’s not that’s not true 30 is not true I I correct them on that oh did you okay so what’s the number then it was around the 95.
Oh he came through okay I remember okay all right I correct them and I corrected where he was that’s 28 years bro it’s still quite it’s still quite a time that’s that’s quite a few years though you say you haven’t been back in 30 years I haven’t been an album for 30
Years yet my bro my Alpha remember a little something he’s like you’re right I hate you right bro you’re right I said welcome back come on man don’t don’t change me at all he’s like yeah you’re right but he’s still alive I I enjoyed man talking to Ray man I I
Realized man we had a lot in common and uh like where he is now in terms of like with football and where his kids are I’m at like the very beginning and he’s already like on that other side man so we had we had a nice nice talk about that and
This you know I think man one of the things that we miss sometimes man is that intergenerational contact in conversation you know like talking with somebody like that came through you know in 90. and uh you know and then I came through in the early 2000s I mean that’s like that’s
Some years in between but like I think it was really cool man just to have the conversations man and just just listen like you know and like we talk about this a lot right you know the older bros man I just do a lot of listening and so I’ve been listening to
Them and you know we didn’t get too much offer to the stories I think we taught more manages about life and uh life management and you know kids and stuff like that you know careers I heard uh Dave talk with Caesar about like investing you know I overheard them
Talking man so and then and he and he was he was amazing to talk to man as well man you know Dave man I was like man I didn’t I didn’t it’s crazy because the when he had mentioned that at the cookout I was like wow you know the same
Thing that our brother passed from it’s the same thing that he does on a daily basis you know in the medical field I was like wow see what I mean so and he works he was working at three hospitals at some time yeah he was telling me he worked at more
Than one Hospital man sometimes he teaches his team he teaches at Yale at least it was the head person I give for the department and you know that that yeah yeah I was like wow man it’s just and then you know just having that talk man but I did you
Know I think man them guys when they come back man they wanna they wanna know man that that what they created it’s still an emotion you know and I just had to put myself in their shoes and say man you know when I come back
You know if I were in their shoes and I came back man what would I want to you know what or what what what do I think should be happening you know at that point so you know we had a lot of talks about we had talks about that and
You know things were working on man but you know I I think it was cool and uh like you said the younger bros man just hearing their perspective their experiences you know some of the stuff that they’re going through right now man I remember when I was their age not too
Long ago and just trying to figure it out I think the point we’re trying to help with this generation is that you ain’t got figured out like you know that’s what we’re here for try to help you out but you gotta want that you gotta want that you gotta you gotta
Seek it out yeah speaking the light right well one of the things that one of the things that um I know Brock and I was talking to them about Brock I can myself and uh who else was around the table I know Brock hike and I was on the table
We was at dub house and we was letting them know like yo we want to help y’all we want to know you know what I’m saying and we’re not gonna you know we we we have fun you know the thing is that we’re so unique as a Brotherhood of row Alpha
We’re so unique because you have to have thick skin to be around us and you can’t take nothing that we say personal and a lot of people take stuff personal especially these young guys you know what I’m saying that they take it personal and I’m like yo don’t take it personal man
We are you know we are jerk sometimes but it’s not to say we’re not going to help you we’re going to help you but you have to reach out I’m not going to investigate and investigate then try to find the solution for you you know what I’m saying no Brew done
That long time ago I I was reaching out to Dayton I was reaching out to DQ I was reaching up to Morrison Mark Morrison was you know and Marcus Scott was my and DQ there’s three was my go-to you understand what I’m saying if I need
Another thing I’ll call update I call up Dave you know what I’m saying at the time you know so I have a lot of people to outreach and I reach out to those young those those Brothers man and I will let them know and Dave they was
Over here listen they was like that was true you know Brooke called me all the time you know what I’m saying at the end of the day you know Bros want to hear from you man old school Bros want to hear from you you know man I’m in that old school bro mode
You know I want to hear from my young boys but I’m not going to keep on calling them to check in on them all the damn time no I’m not gonna do it yeah yeah that too is a you know part of that Rites of Passage as well too so um
I you know I’m just not and I don’t know if I’ve ever been like this right but I’m definitely not in the point of my life where if I hear something I’m gonna go out and reach out to somebody and ask if it’s true right
Um like oh yeah I know this you know oh I heard so-and-so is not doing too well they you know um mentally whatever it is you know um and you know you should reach out to them I said no no they got my contact information they got my number right
Um they can you know uh definitely you know reach out to me now if it’s something that’s you know dramatic or if it’s something that you know is is really truly um drastic absolutely yeah you know I’m gonna reach out you know as a brother but if it’s just something
That you need help with and you think Isaac can you know be a support for that and someone told them that Isaac can be a support for that why am I going to reach out to them to try to help them right you know at some point you got to
Take that initiative and I think that’s just part of growth that’s just part of learning that’s just part of the development process and what I what I will say is that there are some other young men right that take heed to that you know we can we can probably I know
We’re probably all thinking about the same person that was very active in in this process of getting this reunion back together right just made that happen right you know so um and and you know you all know that I work with young people right that I work
In that field I work in the field of of supporting and and development um I look at the fraternity a little bit differently than that though right um the way that I think the way that we learn about um the work of Alpha and the way that we
Are we’re kind of taught in that process that we kind of went through is supposed to create a Little Bit Stronger you know willpower right a little bit and then right the individuals that I work with right you know so we have to you know um again
From a Brotherhood perspective we got to take that initiative right that’s just the the Rites of Passage you know through through this this part of you know their Journey this part of your life like I said there’s other aspects where you know it might be a little bit
More lenient me personally but you know I think from that perspective right that’s one of the things that we teach and that’s how you build relationships that’s how you um are able to build those lasting relationships I think within the Brotherhood and you know as as um uh Mark mentioned man
Um that’s just something that we have always done you know over the years and and that’s something that hasn’t necessarily happened later on in um in the in these these last few years that we definitely need to to bring back and I think that’s going to continue to strengthen our Brotherhood continue to
Strengthen those bonds within this chapter and allow us to continue to grow and develop right yeah you know I I was thinking about my son man one practice he was complaining that he wasn’t getting the ball so I told him I said hey uh when the ball is thrown to you you
Better catch it and I think his man is the same when we think about like there’s just complaining of like well there’s nobody to go to there’s nobody to talk to but yet you have information you have numbers you have contacts you have you but you got all the stuff
But yet you’re not taking advantage of the things that’s important you know what I’m saying and so we kind of take on like this victim mentality that you know woe is me and if you came out of well off the chapter man that mentality was stripped of you at a very early time
You know what I’m saying and and there’s a uh I was just saying this earlier that um the greatest one of the greatest things about always about being wrong amusing being wrong metaphorically because at that point you just make a decision and whatever decision you make that’s the decision you’re going with
Whether somebody liked it or not right and I think that that that’s where we’ve gotten to I think where a lot of disconnected is is that there’s that fear of rejection you won’t get rejected anyway so you might as well go ahead and make the best decision because rejection is
Gonna Come whether you like it or not and I know that for this generation that’s that’s in front of us now that’s difficult just because of how life is set up for them for us I think one of our issues is that we have put on such a uh a stone face
That we don’t allow feelings to come in because we’ve just been taught like nah man you suck that up and you keep it moving right so even we gotta find like a balance of that ourselves so I think man that you know it’s a two-way street yeah and I’m I’m
With you and Ike I’m and I agree with you bro is that like you know you gotta if you’re in trouble you need to say help me yeah um I’m glad you say that Kareem because I was going to make a point that for me I took some of the blame I’m
Taking some of the blame for some things that didn’t happen you know what I’m saying um and and and and the conversation that I had with Miss P today Miss p and our VP you know um they they they they pull some things out of me you know
One of them I went to school with you know what I’m saying and one of them was like the mother of the fraternity raw offer the mother of raw Alpha you know what I’m saying so she watched me grow through as an alpha you know what I’m saying
Other one we went to school together so she she enjoyed the parties the black and gold balls the the woman appreciation the yellow roses that we give out around campus she enjoys all of that um she’s my my number one one of my number one best friend all right
But I looked at some things that they was talking about and I I have to question myself like on the ride back home and Lowell was just driving home and then when I got home and I went to Adams scrib and we was talking and Brock was asking some questions and
I was just there thinking that same much I was just saying that I’m gonna take some of the blame too because I didn’t ask a lot of questions that I should have asked as a brother as a brother that put in a lot of work there um
You know and going for going forward you know I’m saying going forward um I’m gonna be more I’m gonna be more active you know what I’m saying in in decision making when it comes to yeah you understand what I’m saying um because I think it’s important I know
My voice is important I don’t think I know and um going forward that’s going to be a part of it yeah I think we all have a a part to play in it right and I think we all play different parts right we all got different roles
Um and when you know I mean bro you’re a staple you know you know for this chapter right you know older brothers younger brothers right you have been able to build those relationships and and maintain those relationships right James is you know similar in that aspect where he’s able to you know
Everybody enroll out for like he’s he’s touched in in some way shape or form right um you know because when he came came in in 88 and then you know being able to you know kind of come in under the the guidance and and tutelage of you know
The founders and the young um some of those Brothers but then also like the work that he continues to do every single day you know for you know this chapter in his fraternity and um you know I think when one or either of you are kind of removed from an equation
Things change right things shift things are different right you know um you know for me you know I’m gonna come in and I’m going to support as as much as possible I might not be that that um uh verbal you know with a lot of different things I might not touch on a
Lot of different topics but you know if I do have something to say it’s probably gonna because you know things are going a little too far left right um you know and and Kareem is you know just that you know kind of the utility brother that’s always going to be there
Kind of working in the shadows like you may not see exactly what he’s doing but he’s always you know kind of got those uh touch points in all areas right he’s that that voice that you’re gonna that No One’s Gonna Know That Kareem is you know um talking to have that
Conversation but they’re going to come out better from you know those words that he shares so I think um we all got you know our different points Brock is that brother that’s just going to like tell you exactly what it is when it is how it is right and then
You know you’re gonna be mad at them for a little while and you’re gonna realize you know that that brother was absolutely right right and then you’re gonna come back and tell you yeah I know I was right every time every time you know and and everybody has their own
Their own role right the key is making sure that you know you’re getting the the message that you need right and and I think the important things is for you know the important pieces um that relationship building process because these younger brothers they have to know
Like who can I go to for whatever that need is right you can’t just be one person because that one person isn’t going to give you the best advice or the advice you need at that point in time right and I I think that’s what’s so beautiful about you know the the bonds
That you know all those discuss um have right like we were able over the years were able to spend time together really build those bonds build those relationships and within this the younger Bros right there’s they all have their own roles and responsibility roles and personalities as well too they just
Really have to identify what that is right um you know but within that within this circle I can go to somebody and get the the answer to the response that I need right I can call up my Dean and say yo I just I just
Need you to you know kind of listen to this and give me your perspective right or you know uh hit Kareem up and be like yo what do you think about X Y and Z and get some you know different perspectives from him but I don’t know that that’s
Something that is shared across you know um or across all the lines so and I’m just going to say that you know from a chapter’s perspective because that’s what we’re kind of talking about this weekend but in general like you gotta have those mentors you gotta have those
Brothers you got to have those sisters that you can call up and you can talk to and have those conversations with on a regular basis right somebody that you know is going to give you the response and the answer that that you need to hear not necessarily that you want to hear amen
Yeah yeah I mean man I I taught quite a few Brothers this weekend man uh there’s all different parts man you know I I will say man there’s one particular you know brother man I called him earlier today and I was just like man I’m you did your thing this weekend man like
I’m really proud of you and I think man they gotta here you know what I’m saying yeah Alex Alexey man shout out shout out to the to the to the Young Homie man yeah yo he didn’t stay man he stepped up you know what I’m saying and um yeah he saw
Me and you know him he got his line together they stepped up man so Alex man yeah I shouted him out today get this game a call but it’s just important man you know that we us you know when when they are doing stuff because they make
They mess up a lot but when they do good things that we do snap in man and we say something to them also you know with that man because there also has to be that balance right of like yeah so here’s the thing like I was thinking
About it in the car man like there’s some people that’s going to Mentor you where it’s gonna be a conversation and they gonna say you know that’s what I would do boom boom boom right and it was up to you to take it or not they even have somebody that’s coaching your butt
And those are ones that’s going to get in your behind like nope try this again nope do it this way nope you shouldn’t have said it like that do it try it like this you know what I’m saying like you you need those people so you gotta like
Decide you know your relationship with a brother especially an older brother if you’re a young guy younger brother or just somebody someone in general just hot the relationship man just a side like so I want this person to coach me do I want this person to Mentor me or we
Or is this just going to be casual and I think all three are okay but we have to establish that you know what I’m saying like how this relation is going to be in addition to you know the brotherly uh situation which I thought I think I think I think
You know you said that they messed up a lot um I want to go along and say they messed up a lot okay I would say they’re misguided um if you’re talking about those particular young men um you know they had they had the keys to do some amazing things
Sure support was not they’re stuck on an island and they did it through as well as these shook because the support for myself wasn’t there yeah you understand what I’m saying I I’m gonna be oh I’m gonna take the ownership part of that um yeah you know what I’m saying and like I
Said they didn’t communicate certain things to us to get that support as well yeah I’m saying so at the end of the day you know what I’m saying so now going forward we decide to just focus on what do we need to be better at supporting mentoring you know what I’m saying
These younger folks right yeah folks as a as a big umbrella you know what I’m saying um that’s those are the plans that we have to come up with to figure out what it is it’s not gonna be one of us people listening to a two of us it has to be a
Governed body you understand what I’m saying and that’s what it needs to be you know so at the end of the day this is a great start great conversation this weekend you know I’m saying Great Fellowship um but the hot dogs and burgers nah hey man we need a bigger budget man to
Get a bigger budget we’ll have a bigger budget next year jokes man that takes prep we ain’t had no uh Jamaican Jamaican folks when Ike was going through his membership intake jumped up if I’m gonna go crazy man I need to go crazy I just turn around and
Just went back to bed you know yeah I just remember hearing Brew because I’m sitting uh sitting on doing doing my homework or whatever what that which I thought I was doing reality I was asleep I heard some movement and then I I smelled the air I was like oh shoot [Laughter]
You know like burnt rice and peas did the next day yeah some peas and chicken man hey man my man we Fellowship man you know what I’m saying you know what you you bring up a good point man is that something that we the older guys are going to work on man is
That you know when one thing I really enjoyed about my time at Brockport was that I at least had a whole year of getting to know Brock and Barlow Brew I think I met you maybe like the semester before maybe earlier than that yeah but like just
Really mad just chopping it up man and something I had said in the meeting was that like oh whether this person ever becomes an hour for it not really is it myself my concern is that when we have a conversation man that we both leave better than when we started
Amen right like it’s all about building that relationship like I can build crime example um remember Jeremiah Kirkland I don’t say this whole government name online Jeremiah never became an alpha man but let me tell you something man one of the coolest dudes man like still to this day you know his uh
His in-laws is next door to me and every time I see him man it’s always love man because it was it was about we were both confident we were both black men we were both from Rochester men and we had we just had that you know connections like that too say it again
Jeremiah cool good peoples oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah but but just because he never became an alpha wasn’t like oh I I ain’t rocking with him it had nothing to do with that oh yeah absolutely man but I think that’s what’s missing sometimes though is that we get this
And then we feel like uh well we gotta separate ourselves we do but we don’t need to separate ourselves thinking that we better than someone else nah as a matter of fact we become a servant to these people right well and and I think I think that was even you know um
That’s even misstated right I think you have to go in to that go into that um you know process to be coming out for with those qualities and with those intentions because because if you don’t when you get out everything is going to be flipped up on his head you gotta you
Know you you get access right we’ll call it access to a lot more things that’s my son he’s teaching because the teachings no no I mean I have nothing else to say because he’s saying it all right yeah yeah so he knows those things he came into those things and I always
Tap tap tap things into him here right and and watch some Flores but at the end of the day I was in the back watching them flourish you understand what I’m saying up to this day cats was still mad at me because I crossed that December 4th
Cat was mad oh some old school cats bro you have no idea and I never really talk about it so I’m not going to get on the platform and talk about it I have to really just like yo man the Jamaican came out of me in a meeting
Like yo man you know I had to approach the situation like yo nah this is what I’m doing so instead of we I said nah this is what I’m doing you know what I’m saying so it’s those things right because he deserved that to me in my mind he
Deserved that Brock was like yo I got you you know what I’m saying say no more you know at the end of the day I’m not keeping them on for another day two day no he’s done tonight you know what I’m saying today doing it today good night you know what I’m
Saying yeah good night thank God because I was gonna quit the next day [Laughter] like the little boy at church I’m tired let’s go back to that though okay let’s go back to that because that’s a part of it that’s missing and because it’s missing once again there was no
Older Bros in the back to watch him doing what they were supposed to do right I’m not blaming it on that man and I I had to put it in I have to put it here first and think about it I know I’m all the way the DMV
Right or conversation could still happen right it didn’t happen with me right I’m speaking for me I’m not speaking for y’all right so with them just be okay I got these three letters now and I’m I’m me over here and y’all over there never we always a servant to those people I’m always
Approaching people when I’m back in my days hey how you doing that’s a not for them to be an hour for just a bit they are black men on a white campus so at the end of the day I want to make sure they’re good yeah and and and to that
Point too right if you join any organization this is just talking generally to everybody anybody right if you join any organization and you have a problem with one or two people and there’s a 50 people that are a part of that organization right the problem is
And and you you know have all and you’re always talking negatively about the organization the group or whatever like that the problem is not the organization in the group it’s you because is only with one or two individuals right it’s not with everything and and if it becomes an issue with that
Organization and you join that organization says a lot about you right yeah you know you walk into a situation where you shouldn’t have been there right when people choose a job or when people take a job they shouldn’t be taking a job because they you know they’re they’re looking at the benefits
Of it right it’s solely like ultimately when you go into a job you’re there a lot a lot of times more times than you are with your family right that essentially becomes you know part of that essentially becomes your family it’s the same thing when you join an organization right that’s gonna become
Your family right so if you can’t spend the time if you don’t you know if you’re going in with the wrong intentions right if you’re not going in to build those bonds to make those connections to do that do that work like you’re doing yourself for selfish reasons and you probably you shouldn’t
Join that you shouldn’t have joined that group that takes that job or whatever it is okay so let’s go back to the family Dynamic that we talk about a lot in this show right so think about it for some of us this is the first time we have been shown
Some type of love that did not have a condition tied to it this is the first time that we’ve been part of something to where there is some form of normalcy right like not dysfunction like this is the first time that a black man can tell another black man they love them
And it’s not meaning sexual type of way right it’s just you know Brotherly Love Philadelphia right like genuinely you know I’m saying like we can’t like think about that think about if you came from a place to where you didn’t have a parent in the house right let’s say
You’d have your father in the house and and those those things like you didn’t have that experience but then now you come to campus you’re seeking that like I want that I want it but then when you finally get it you reject it because it’s not what you used to and it
Feels weird and it’s like well why they talking to me like that you know what I’m saying because they’re so used to being spoken another way right probably by their moms and now we expect them to get what the program like well why are you so sensitive and why this and that
Like Hey listen we just telling it to you like it is because they have not seen that this is the first time and then you have cop and then in most times you have college students right we were blessed Ike and I am Barlow to have
Bruiser there we were we were blessed to have you know an older brother that could could at least view out and just be like well hold on you know what I mean but in most college campuses especially predominantly white institutions they don’t have that so we
We do got to be sensitive you know to that as well so we have to teach them we have to say listen this is how we have a conversation like what Brew would say like listen I’m not going to tell you what you what you want to hear
But I’ma tell you what you need to hear and I’m I’m saying this to you not because I don’t like you I’m actually saying it to you because I love you and I want you to do better bro you brought up a great Point bro
I grew up in a Jamaican household man up to this day my father just passed away August 1st last year that man never told me you love me right my mom is still alive I never hear my mom say hey I love you all right I never hear that when I came
To college as a freshman and I meet I meet Mark Morrison you know what I’m saying and I mean Gary Shaw Antoine and you know that’s when everything’s all beginning and from that you know and um giving it to the organization the love that I received from just Bros
And you know Maurice from your Sigma um a couple other cats for me Sigma just show me mad love oddly that 494 line um Marcus J all those guys it’s amazing to me you know what I’m saying we’re seeing people other men pouring into into me you know what I’m saying and
It was crazy for me you know what I’m saying not only that you have the ladies coming they coming you know at the end of the day you know you know but that didn’t throw me off track you know and I embrace it I embrace it because that’s what I was looking for
And I got it and when I got it I started sharing that love I got my little Jamaican crew that I run with you know what I’m saying we cook every Friday you know and we do things every Friday we chill and they used to see me different
But it was still me it was still me that they see but I was different you know and they used to ask me questions and I used to give them the answers you know and I always concealed I’d be like yo man I’m not my love for y’all
