Greek life at the university of denver has a long tradition pi beta phi was the first sorority founded in 1885. beta theta pi was the first fraternity founded in 1888 bill sorensen is a member of sigma alpha epsilon the fraternity was founded at du in 1891. sorensen joined in 1950.
The same spirit prevails i think the spirit of brotherhood and those lasting friendships that you gain from a fraternity he was only 17 but many of his fraternity brothers were veterans many were married and lived in the fraternity house our house hasn’t changed it was built in the 1930s
And it’s been in the same location and it’s in a prime location you know right in front of law school between frisco marty whitmore joined gamma phi beta in 1970. the early 1970s were kind of a tough time for greeks at the du campus you know it was woodstock west it was
Woodstock it was kent state there was a lot of unrest in our country and greeks were perceived as being sort of establishment and most of our generation was very anti-established so on campus it was a time when the sororities went from being at 70 for their total during those four years
We went down to a total limitation of 55 and yet those of us who were greeks had a great time it was it was a lot of fun you know i’m sure just as much fun as it is now although it’s wonderful to see such renewed interest i
Couldn’t believe it when the houses at du started reaching the 100 mark by the time david pucci became a lambda chi alpha at du in 1980 popularity in greek life was coming back you know the stigma i think from the 60s and 70s it kind of wore off so
Really during the early 80s we saw a resurgence and during the time that i was a lambda chi the fraternity really grew and saw really what i realized is that it became for me more of a leadership incubator this is great place for me to learn some leadership skills and really grow
The university of denver now has nine fraternities on campus and five sororities the delta delta delta sorority was added in 2000 laura stinovic and cassie papa john were founding members i loved that i could be a founding member and then i could be kind of on the ground floor of leadership with the
Chapter and it just makes me so proud to see how far the chapters come since then i wanted to be a part of something new and something that really had some strong convictions and standards i think that when they say that sorority and fraternity experience that college is just the beginning i
Think that that is the truth i think that i look at my years at du and i loved i love them but now i look at my friendships and i look at how they’ve grown and developed since then i look at how rewarding it is to be a national
Volunteer and the friendships i’ve formed with tri-deltas all across the country and i really think that my years at du were just the beginning of something really great you
