Hey guys so welcome or welcome back to my channel my name is sister rose and today I’m gonna be talking about my experience being at a Panhellenic sir so as you can see by the letters on my jacket I am i proud sister of Alpha Chi Omega and here’s my little cute Jersey
But I wanted to talk about my experience of being a black woman and a predominantly white organization because this is something that I had had people outside of the Greek community asked me about and something that I know people criticize and are confused about and have misconceptions about and I just
Want to address it and address what my experience has been so far so if you’re interested in hearing that then just go ahead and keep on watching so I joined sorority my freshman year of college I joined in the spring semester so spring 2018 was when I joined Alpha Chi Omega
And the reason why I wanted to go through sorority recruitment was because in high school I had never really stepped it on my comfort zone I didn’t really get involved as much as I wish I had and that is something that I ended up regretting I don’t regret anything
That I did I regret the things that I didn’t do and even so to this day I wish I had done more I’m in high school and been more involved and had more experiences but I did it so going into college I didn’t want to make that same
Mistake again and joining the sorority with something that I had kind of thought about and the reason I didn’t fall semester was because I was still unsure if it was something that I wanted to do but when spring came I was like okay I definitely want to get to me some
Of the sororities and I want to know what they’re about and I had seen some people from my high school that had joined sororities post about like a little league and the relationships that they had with their bigs and their sisters and I was we intrigued and I didn’t want to miss
Out on it I do come from a family of Greeks my grandma was or is an aka my aunt is an aka and my granddad is tomato sci-fi so those are all NPHC organizations so my aunt wanted me to be a legacy for her organization and just at my campus her organization wasn’t
Active at the time and I wanted to join an organization that I could be involved with in my college years and my four years of college and continue on but I wanted to be able to grow with the organization long college I definitely have so much respect for NPHC
Organizations because there is a lot of history behind them they were developed when segregation was still around and black people were not accepted into the predominantly white fraternities and sororities so they were and so I have so much respect for them but when I was going through the process of looking
Into a sorority the Panhellenic website was extremely organized they had all the dates there of the sororities that were recruiting and I just decided to go out and talk to the girls I wasn’t sure I was going to join a Cantona organization or not but when I went and talked to the
Alpha guys I had an instant connection with them they were very genuine they shared the same values of me and I just felt an instant connection I loved how they were about real strong women and their philanthropy was domestic violence awareness and I connected with the fact that they supported leadership ability financial
Responsibility academics and I felt like this is an organization that I could see myself being accepted into and really really growing with I also want to add that the chapter at my school is very diverse my school in general is a very diverse school because of the location
That it’s in so that’s just something that I forgot to mention and I’m adding this and as I’m editing so joining was one of the first decisions that I had made in my life for me was a decision that I made nobody else made my family didn’t make me make this decision
I made this decision 100% by myself and it’s something that I am so proud of doing course I was met with backlash and people who don’t really understand why would you don’t join a Panhellenic organization and I know about their misconceptions like some people think oh you join a Panhellenic sorority you
Think you’re white and that is definitely not the case I am African American 100% clearly and that is something that I am proud of and would never deny I just don’t think that you should have to join a sorority solely based off of your skin complexion I think that there’s a lot
More that should go into picking your organization like the values what you think you can get out of it the connections that you have with the women and that those were the main things that top skin complexion or race when I was picking my sorority so yeah when when
People make comments like that or when they think like that it’s just so incorrect to think that way and it’s crazy to think that there’s still people who make those judgments or they see black people or minorities who join Panhellenic organizations and a lesser way or think less of them think less of
Us just because I don’t think that race should be one of the reasons why you have to pick an organization just like I don’t think that you have to date someone based on their race or ethnicity and I don’t think that you have to choose a school that um it’s
Predominantly of your race or ethnicity if you choose to go to HBCU the master choice if you choose to date inside your race and that’s your choice if you choose to date outside your race or go to a different school outside your town or country then that’s also okay and I
Think that that should be accepted and welcome and sorry if I’m ranting but um I actually had the benefit of attending the Alpha Chi Omega Leadership Conference that was in Indiana this past weekend and let me tell you that conference just confirmed for me 100% that I had to make the right my
Headquarters that elect me to be the vice president of PR in marketing so I was flown out to Indianapolis Indiana and I got to see sisters from across the country come together and feel that sisterhood and I was able to talk to them and connect with them because we
All have the same shared values and we share the same ritual and you know it’s not like I was the only minority person in the room so I guess the point of me making this video was just to share my experiences with my decisions and clear any misconceptions that misconceptions
That people may have about what it’s like so if you enjoyed watching this video give it a thumbs up if you have any comments or things that you would like to say or if you’re in an organization Greek life let’s share that counsel Panhellenic love comment down
Below and i’ll see you guys in the next one
