Okay hello so I guess we’re just gonna dive right into this I am making this video to kind of talk about some of my experiences as a black woman in Greek life and on white school and I want to preface all of this by saying that I

Think a lot of this stuff had a much larger effect on me mentally and emotionally then I even allowed myself to believe at the time that it was happening so if you’re looking at this and you’re like well you already graduated like why do you care why are you like because I’m

[ __ ] up in the head now sorry Becky no but oh I’m gonna try and keep this PG – I guess I’m already kind of failing at that so um if you’re like oh my god him out on her to say that word she probably did um so I’m triggered because

Yesterday I saw this video of a girl and my former sorority at a different chapter she’s an active member but she this video has been viral for about a week now of her saying like well if you don’t like the way things are in America then leave basically she had on Trump

Sure she had this big trump lag in the background and you know I get freedom of speech and all that but the reason I was so triggered by it is because one this video has been viral for like I said a week and International’s has said nothing done nothing people have been

Tagging them since the video video it kind of came out and nothing and the reason that I’m upset by this is because I kind of talked briefly about my personal experiences in my sorority on Twitter last year and international sent me a cease and desist letter and so I’m just trying to figure

Out so basically it’s just kind of a slap in the face like you want to protect your image so bad and you want to like make sure that you look good but like this language like what she’s saying this mindset of like well if you don’t like our corrupt system if you

Don’t like our our racist ideal ideals like that this country was built on like the leave well [ __ ] first of all if I could leave I would but guess what nobody wants us because America’s garbage we can’t go anywhere I digress so that video came out and then I was

Also already kind of like had a bad taste in my mouth because about a week ago maybe a little more than that my former chapter posted a recruitment video and in the video there was all white girls and that’s frustrating because this was an issue when I was in

The chapter three or four years ago and it was brought up and it’s just kind of frustrating because so many conversations have been had like I spoke with advisors like we literally like tried to work through this and then it’s like a slap in the face to see that

Years later and like we have way more black women in my former chapter now like and women of color and like you’re still not representing them or like trying to make them feel included like so I’m gonna talk a little bit about that so basically I was one of the first

Black girls to ever be in my chapter so my sorority at Texas Tech never had a black girl until kya rolled up okay so I understood that things I was gonna have to kind of work through some things but I also came from a very sheltered background where like I didn’t really

Deal with discrimination and microaggressions and race isn’t like I didn’t deal with that I really didn’t you know and like there’s like certain isolated incident where I’m like mmm that probably could have moved great but overall like I I got pretty lucky so all this stuff was

Just like I went in blind and then it just kind of like spiraled from there because I let a lot of things happen that shouldn’t have that should have been nipped in the bud like right then and there so the first thing was I was

Very much I am reading notes by the way because I don’t want to ramble for like 45 minutes because I will I want to try and keep this activity so I was tokenized from with John as soon as I got in to the sorority I was asked to be in this

Recruitment video or this marketing video like I was put on the door stack and at first I didn’t really think anything of it like I was like okay like whatever but the more I looked at it I was like I don’t feel like I’m in this

Group of people in this video or in this picture because they think I’m so pretty and they want me to be represented no like I’m in this because you want to show off the new black girl that you got like no one should feel that way like I

It’s just not and I just didn’t realize how bad it was until like maybe the next year my freshman year I just kind of like let it happen I was like oh yeah like my stupid ass anyways so that was an issue and then they were also just

Like a ton of just like racially charged microaggressions like just little things not even little honestly like looking back on it they were pretty huge actually um I know like there was one incident and a lot of these things like a lot of the stuff that I’m talking

About is with advisors this isn’t even members this is like grown women so like I know there was one time we were at a conference and I had on a like sleeveless dress like a thick strap dress whatever we were taking a picture and I guess like my bra strap was out

And the advisor was like okay your bra strap is showing well I guess you’re black so you can’t see it anyways and I was like like first of all y’all do I look like I match my black broth anyways so um things like that are like I was

Forced to take my braids out one year for recruitment my advisor was like well they’re just not natural they’re not in our code of our guidelines you’ve never had a black woman how her braids moving on so just like little things like that we’re happening and I was letting them

Happen like I I think I was so scared of being like the crazy black girl the over sensitive like because the harsh reality is like that’s how y’all paint black women and I didn’t want to beat that so I kind of let these things happen and

Then finally I think I just it all hit me like this is really happening to you like and it’s completely not okay and I finally sat down with my advisors and I just talked about everything like I was like here’s all the fucked-up [ __ ] you’ve said to me like here’s what’s

Wrong with all your crouppen videos like because someone years ago had actually my best friend’s mom had common in under one of the recruitment videos same issue that I just talked about at the beginning of this video and she was like there’s a complete lack of diversity and

I remember sitting at this table with my advisors when she when that post went up and they’ve looked at me and they’re like well we’re diverse we have you I was like like no that’s not how it works but whatever so this is like been an

Issue for years and years and years and I just always handled myself really really gracefully but i sat down with them and I was like I’m praying that we recruit more black women and more women of color I really am I know that we can only have in the chapter like what like

Who decides to go through recruitment and not a lot of black girls relish I don’t blame them honestly but I was like you’re not even representing the people that you do have like these videos these pictures these social media posts they should be an accurate depiction if you

Have 5% black girls and women of color 5% of your social media posts and 5% of the people in that video should be black or women of color you know and like that’s not the case like just having a black girl or a Latina or an Asian girl

And the like in your stuff or like in the chapter doesn’t make you diverse like it’s about not only accurately representing them but also like making them feel included and support it just as much as their white counterparts and right now the way my sorority at the international level

Is treating everything convinces me that that’s completely not the case as a black woman as a Latina as an Asian woman in my sorority I don’t think that you’re valued the same way you’re not and that’s hugely problematic um which is why I was so triggered decided to

Make this video sorry I’m I know I’m like hitting ten minutes so I’m trying to like kinda wrap this up but yeah I guess it’s just frustrating because like I talked to my advisors about this stuff and like it’s still an issue and I’m like so then what like what did I waste

My breath for like you know why did I do that but um and like I also want to say that like Greek life isn’t I don’t want to make it seem like Greek life is just completely gone off it because I did meet some of my best friends and even my

Friends who aren’t weren’t in my sorority like I met from like people that I did know in my sorority so like it I mean there there’s good that came out of it but I I think that the weight it had on me almost wasn’t worth it

I don’t know it’s just a lot and I just think it’s important to like drill into these chapters and that’s what I’m hoping like maybe if there are younger active members or like girls who are looking to rush like make changes dude like don’t let these things happen like

If you see a corrupt system like don’t have this mindset of like well if you don’t like the corrupt system in the way it is then like don’t join like no fix it you know but it’s just I don’t know it’s a lot I just urge y’all as allies I’ve had a lot

Of my friends reach out and be like I’m so sorry that we didn’t like do more for you like stand up for you when all that was happening and I think in my situation they could only be as upset as I was and since I was just kind of like

Letting everything get brushed under the rug they kind of did too like I think that was a learning experience for everyone involved but I I think it’s important so like if you’re an ally like be an ally like use your voice and don’t be scared too because there’s probably a lot of black

Women in the world who weren’t who are in my shoes and they’re like well I don’t want to be the crazy black girl like I don’t want to be the aggressive like you know y’all know like the way black women are painted I think there’s

A lot of people out there like that and it’s not enough to just have like I know in the recruitment video that they just posted I think there’s like one like Filipino and they’re like and she’s on exec and the photo is of exact like you

Know it’s just like it’s not enough to like just barely like you know if you’re gonna recruit these like women of color black women Hispanic women like include them like make them feel beautiful and lifted up and love like you’re not doing that I didn’t feel that I did I felt

Tokenized I felt like I was used at the convenience of my chapter and I feel like the black girls now are still there’s literally whatever I’m not even gonna it’s fine I can talk more about this honestly I’m probably like five people are gonna watch this but if you

Want me to like really dive into like how [ __ ] up just the Greek system is and especially when it comes to like recruitment and all that stuff I will north gladly do so but I just want to get on here and kind of voice why I’m so frustrated about the

Way all of this is going down especially because I was literally given a cease and desist order like does that whatever hope you enjoyed this piece I love one another black lives matter
