Foreign and welcome good morning my name is Excellence America Joshua and I am a master of development engineering program here at the University of California Berkeley I came in about a month ago um as a MasterCard Foundation through the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program so I’m fully funded to come here
And study and I think this place is pretty nice really interesting really beautiful great environment to study and my colleagues and I while having a meeting just start hey we should have more Africans this place is too wide it’s less blend let’s blend the flow let’s blend the
Diversity a little bit more and less tell them what it’s about what’s going on how it works for most of us it wasn’t easy coming across information when we’re trying to apply or finding people who could help us exactly we didn’t most of us didn’t have that privilege to have
That and so we thought hey let’s do that for other people let’s help them let’s have more Africans um have the Berkeley experience and that’s why we’re doing this and in the course of about one hour 30 minutes or less than two hours we’re going to be talking to
You about what Berkeley is what is like living in Berkeley um the admission process the type of scholarships and fundings that are available how to apply for them what to look out for them um we know we have participants from across different countries and Nations
And you know and all of that and so we’re going to try as much as possible to let you know the perks of individual Nations where Austin is not just my cohort that’s 2023 MasterCard Foundation Scholars cohort for UC Berkeley we also have senior courts as you’re going to be
Listening to our the student representative council from us okay in a bit and also some others and so I need you to know that this is a collective effort if you’re here I really hope that you are in the WhatsApp group and if you’re there say hi there and let people
Know that we’ve started and it’s very important they join us um the journals immediately okay uh so please and please um pay attention get your notes and pen if you have to we might be very fast like I explained we have an important engagement immediately after this or
Literally in two hours but now from now and so all in less than two hours from now so in as much as we wish to spend the whole day with you we might not be able to we might not be able to have a separate section for questions and
Answers but we’re going to be answering your questions in the group so take note of your questions make sure you’re in the WhatsApp group if you’re not in the WhatsApp group put in the chat box what’s the link to the WhatsApp group I will share that with you so you can join
So please be sure you’re in the WhatsApp group we might be answering questions there the little we can hear we can but we have an engagement I’m repeating that over and over again so you can know that we might not have all the accessories we have we can depending on how this goals
Will know if we need to do another webinar or not but need to remember that everyone who’s doing here who’s doing this it’s really busy in school right now we have a lot going on and so everyone is making a sacrifice because we care about you we have to wake up
Early we have to make sure you have this and we really want to see you here next fall so please um pay close attention and make sure you’re here without further Ado welcome again and I remain excellent and Rica Joshua I’m going to be inviting okay right now and
He’s going to be talking to us first before we start talking about admission or if you really want to apply to Berkeley I see very few people have applied outside the application um the thing is what is Berkeley like do you really want to come to Berkeley uh
Because it’s not just about the school after I didn’t call what what makes Berkeley better why should I come to Berkeley why shouldn’t I go to Texas why didn’t I go to New York um I think okay we’ll be doing Justice to that telling us his experience of
Um why why Berkeley and what Berkeley is like just to give you a feel on an idea of what it is and then we could go to um other things um here is the student representative council for us at UC Berkeley and the MasterCard foundation and I’ll allow him
Introduce himself further but he’s just an interesting guy um okay can you turn on your video so I can Spotlight you oh okay good morning everyone I’m kind of like just I just oh God I just woke up Abby he’s sorry yeah that my video um
Should I say your um your slides or do you have them there no I I don’t think I can do that from here can you okay so just turn on your video and I will share your slides for you okay give me a sec please okay there you go
All right good morning everyone my name is you can call me okay um I The Scholar Council representative for the massacre Scholars at UC Berkeley um and I’m a Nigerian and I’m a master’s student uh I’m studying folklore uh yeah so it’s quite early right here and um I
Just woke up from sleep but we had to do this for you guys as so mentioned that we have um an important activity that will be on in less than few hours um so without Much Ado I have to dive in let’s start with YouTuber production um
Life at Bentley doesn’t stand still with over 35 000 students worldwide on a vibrant Urban setting meaning that Berkeley is not just a school an academic environment there’s a lot of things going on um so it’s no wonder that the Campus Community talks about the fear of
Missing out because there’s a lot of people but um you can jump in and discover how Dynamic and interconnected life is at Berkeley and then uh you see basically is actually one of the best schools in the world and the number one public institution in America I must
I know you must have heard about this a lot so um the programs we have here we have over 120 graduates programs in 15 schools and colleges awarding more than four thousand Masters and professional degrees so UC Berkeley offers highly pursued programs and computer science and biological social sciences
Is also considered one of the most diverse and inclusive campuses in America so I would say students looking for a diverse social Melting Pot intellectually challenging academic environment and abundant nearby attractions and activities we gravitate to a campus such as UC Berkeley um the school is kind of located in an
Important part of the state I know you must have heard about the Silicon Valley so uh Silicon Valley is just by the hinterland thank you so um there are over 22 libraries and many libraries scattered across the campus and there are lots of recreational facilities we have like standard stadiums who have um
Football basketball soccer volleyball swimming teams and groups so there’s a lot to do if you’re someone who loves sports UC Berkeley is the right place for you there are over 1 000 student clubs Student Government entities as well as fraternities and sororities um there’s a lot to do in UC Berkeley
Apart from your academic um and reverse if you’re someone who is proactive you’re someone who loves um working out there’s a lot of things you can do there’s a lot of clubs you can join it is an amazing place and the good thing about UC Berkeley is
For for my own experience I will say that each day I meet someone that is not from America each day I meet someone interested someone from um a country that I’ve never heard of or maybe been to so it’s quite diverse and there’s a lot of um different communities here
Now let’s talk about entrance requirements usually the minimum GPA requirement for UC Berkeley applicants is 3.0 so but it would help if you didn’t draw so much on your GPA anyway most of us Massacre Scholars um yes we we we we have good grades but one of the most important things that
Mastercard or any funding um uh Outlet will look for in your application is how proactive you are what are you doing to help people around you I mean um are you just the classroom type or are you someone that moves that goes out of the classroom to make things happen
So they look for people who are creative people who are Innovative people who dream but not just dream people who work hard to make their dreams come to pass and when I talk about dreams I’m not talking about you just um having 4.0 5.0 no they’re looking for someone who is
Active outside the classroom so yeah why we’re talking about having a good GPA also talk about what are you doing that is not related just to your classroom so however these two admissions teams like proactive people just like mentioned who engage in many extracurricular activities um the Berkeley has entrepreneurship
Program assists students in launching new Ventures and um I want to say that last week we ranked number one in the nation for the school that supports the highest number of Ventures yeah we are both Harvard and Stanford and like with more than 100 Ventures um supported by the school and the house
Business school yeah let’s go to living in the Bay Area in California so the Bay Area is like the home to Silicon Valley and you know where you have like such concentration um of um Industries and uh entrepreneur entrepreneurial spirit is likely gonna come with um High Cost of Living I mean the
Headquarters of Facebook Google um LinkedIn and most of the social media Outlets you know is just based by the back of our school I mean literally um meaning that which also translate there’s a lot of jobs there’s a lot of things to do here there’s a lot of
Companies to to visit you know to the sort of networking um activities going on so life is quite expensive here um what really ridiculous if I tell you what would pay for rent and stuff but then I think it comes with what you find in the area
Um but there are so many benefits as well the Bay Area houses the famous Silicon Valley there is an abundant cultural diversity numerous job and educational opportunities amazing views of the landscape and more uh we stay at the eye house which is like the international house and from this he um
We could see like the Bay Area um we could see from here San Francisco is like the hinterland um so that view alone is kind of amazing and then California has the biggest economy in the U.S if California was a con one of the richest countries in the world
You can I think it ranked fourth now someone told me it’s like one came forth at the highest um with the highest economy and there’s abundance of sunshine which we can relate to we are from Africa we like yeah you understand what I’m saying so um this place Feels Like Home
Um and especially now that we have like the MasterCard Foundation Community here is um have has built this community of students from different African countries that we are like brothers and sisters here like we look out for each other we take care of each other I don’t think that anyone here
Feels left out or feels alone there’s always someone to do there’s always someone to relate to there’s always someone to hang out with to catch fun with so um yeah living in the area is is fun and um comes with a lot of benefits as well so
You just maybe the only problem I have here is like the cost of living which I’ve mentioned but since MasterCard is funding me I don’t have to worry about that yeah thank you oh thank you very very much okay that was that was so good um let me get back welcome okay
Oh thank you very much okay um he just Illustrated what Berkeley is Berkeley it’s super cool and I had to hit on something if you’re keen on entrepreneurship very little there not just in Hearts but there’s there’s so much around entrepreneurship going on here there’s so much funding
Um there’s so much support there’s just so much and there’s so much you can do so um thank you very much okay for that like he just told you and his name is the way it is so you can find him across social media he’s in he’s in folklore in the
Archeology department and so you can always connect with him um so that’s it about Berkeley Berkeley it’s a really beautiful place the environment is really cool and it’s a public university and it’s big it’s not just enclosed into one space it’s just all over the place and it’s really really cool
Um trust me I think it’s a place where that can harness and bring out so much in you it has so many opportunities that I’m not sure everybody gets to tap into before the leave um so briefly I’m going to be sharing with you the um graduate school application process
And then after that we can okay okay has put in his details in the chat box so you can find his name there and you can always find him on social media he’s very approachable he is very nice to relate with and so yeah you can always connect with him all right
Okay so um graphic admissions open on the 15th of this month of this month it usually opens between the 14th and 15th of September at least so far that I know up in the last three or something years I don’t know if it’s gonna change but usually that is
Um the time frame yeah thank you okay for waking up for this thank you it’s really pretty early here and it’s getting cold so waking up early it’s not it can be a struggle yeah so I was saying that we um so he opened on the 15th of September
And so there’s a link we’re going to be sharing in the group where you have to go and create your account so the very first thing you need to do is to create your account when you create your account to create your account you just need your email address your name your
Surname and your date of birth and so you when you create the account it will send you a code um to verify your account and once you put in the code you will logged in into the system or into the platform so once you get there there’s so many questions
That will be asked you now there are two parts of the graduate and application process one part contains the general questions for grad school and then you might or might not have extra questions or extra requirements depending on the program you’re applying for I’m gonna give you a quick example say for example
I’m in development engine hearing the normal UC Berkeley has requirements for use personal statement your statement of purpose and all of those other things your transcript you know and then Eve depending on the country you’re from from Nigeria they didn’t need a use of English test for me
Um so for some countries you might need a use of English test or something so they had all of that listed there and then I had to answer that however for my own Department my own program we were also required to submit a portfolio a 10-page portfolio were also required to
Um were also required to write to answer some questions write some essays choose three faculties ranking in one two three that you would like to work with and then answer why you like to work with them so that’s my program um some other programs might not require that they may require something else
Some programs require GRE or GMAT like the business school while some do not require as well so the link we’re going to be sharing with you in the WhatsApp group is actually going to tell you where to go to when you get there it’s going show you it’s going to show you a
Link of where to start your application but it’s also going to show you a link of the programs that are available and the deadline for the programs now I’m I’m someone that always like to think about things with the end in mind and so I would like you to think from the end
In mind Berkeley has so many exciting programs so many beautiful beautiful programs but you want to start with the end of Mind say for example yes you want to come to Berkeley but hey you do not have funding yet or you do not have so
Much money I don’t take a loan and you want to explore the MasterCard Foundation scholarship there are other scholarships available as well which risper is going to be talking about them I’ll need you to start from that end when you’re applying you know you’re you’re applying with the mindset that
Hey I’m applying I want to get this scholarship and so if you have that at the back of your mind it will help you determine and know how to craft the answers to your questions and how you answer them all right so if you have at
The back of your mind that hey I’m applying for MasterCard Foundation scholarship you need to actually check hey I like that program it’s very interesting I love it is does MasterCard support that program right so that is good does not mean it might might just feel no I need to find
Something similar or looking for something MasterCard has to support So if you’re thinking of that part of Mastercard or any other funding you want to go check and find out the programs the funding supports first or another way you look at it is you go to the program you’re interested in and then
Check for the offers or the scholarships that the program offers or that the program has for you right so you can check for all of that so for um for me I did the two I checked for the program I liked and then I went to see if MasterCard
Um phones that program just give me a second let me plug in my laptop I was in charge okay sorry I had to plug it in um if MasterCard was funding The Program MasterCard like okay said UC Berkeley has over 120 programs MasterCard does not fund all and also MasterCard does
Not fund undergraduate programs and does not fund um does not fund undergraduate programs and does not form and PHD programs the fund only Masters thank you very much James James has put the link to the MasterCard programs and the in the chat box so click on the chat box and check
The programs they found to be sure that the program you are thinking that’s if you’re interested in MasterCard it’s okay not to be interested in MasterCard you might be here you have funding you from some sort or you want to get some other kind of
Um maybe you want to go through PhD and get that kind of funding or something else it’s absolutely fine it it doesn’t you don’t have to um drive to Google MasterCard okay Muscat is really cool but you don’t have to so if it’s MasterCard you check for
If the program you’re interested in is funded by them because if it’s not then there’s no point Okay so MasterCard um program yeah you check if it’s fun then you check your department and also check that the requirements they have you have it most most application processes and in December
Some in January and if you have not written GRE before or GMAT before and you want to start writing it now it might be a struggle so if you know you don’t have that at all then you want to look for programs that do not require GRE for GMAT are you with me
So with that being said so you have all these essays you’re going to write um and another thing I must warn you beforehand the UC Berkeley application is a lot so please start early identify the program you want to apply for and create an account just create an
Account when you create an account and select the program you will see all the requirements or all the questions you’re going to answer so that you can take time to answer them submit your application early but also start early don’t say I’ve seen what I want on my
School website you just write it down I need to write essay I need to write this I need to write that so you write it down and then you don’t create an account and when you come you realize hey it’s not just one page I just don’t
Need to upload it there’s just so much to upload so please um have that um go there set you up for your account and so you can have an idea of what is required there are some financial information they might ask you those kind of information are very important
When you’re answering them because they they’re kind of going to determine whether you need some kind of funding or not in UC Berkeley MasterCard is not the only one that funds students there are so many fundings that your department can fund you graduate school can fund you there’s so many other fundings that
Are available but those answers to those questions might help the um those reviewing your application to know if you require funding or not and what kind of funding require and if you qualify for a particular funding what they do is if from your application they see you qualify a particular funding
They forward your details or your application to the people that come in that funding to consider you do you see why it says start with the end in mind know what you want to apply for know the scholarship you want to apply for MasterCard scholarship can be quite
Competitive so many people are applying however you can identify other options like oh if MasterCard doesn’t pan out this these days whisper just shared um a link that contains different opportunities and financial aids available at Berkeley the different scholarships are available so you want to check it out and see how you qualify
So these are just general outlooks I don’t want to update development engineering I don’t want to limit you to development engineering depending on the program that you want to study there are different programs different requirements and like I said we have so many people um in different departments and we’re
Actually going to be sharing with you a repository of their names and email addresses as well as their programs after the webinar so in case you need any of them um you need your help or they’re in your department you can actually reach out to
Them and ask them for help on how to go about it or if you’re stuck or maybe appeal to them if they have some time to review your application I feel I believe they’ll want to do that however you have to give them enough time to review it
Don’t just send someone today and say oh the deadlines tomorrow I have to tell me tomorrow this place can get really busy there’s so much reading there’s so much expectation and so it can be a whole lot um for everyone here so just keep every everyone grease and give them time to
Review all of that so um with that being said I’m going to move over to risper to talk about the if you have any questions just note it if we have extra time or maybe take your personal hair if we don’t we take it in the group
Um so I’ll move over to respond now to talk about the funding opportunities that are available respect and you turn on your video so I can spotlight yeah okay oh thank you so much uh Atlanta okay for waking up very early and and sharing your your journey to Barclay
To help other people with their application process and hi everyone I’m Rista um I’m in development engineering to um with Avalanche uh so happy to meet you I’m happy to meet all people who are interested in coming to Buckley from South Sahara Africa it’s a good program Buckley’s a great school
I’ve just shared a link um someone else was supposed to take us through the scholarship so I don’t have a lot of a lot of info about the other scholarships that exist at Barclay but I have some examples I just shared the link of the financial aid uh available
At Buckley it indicates all the financial scholarships available at Berkeley apart from MasterCard we are familiar with MasterCard because we came here with MasterCard and it is a very good scholarship it’s fully funded um I want to clarify two things uh you cannot start applying the scholarship fast
You need to be admitted fast because otherwise they are just going to be finding something but that’s not there so you you in during your application there’s a question where you ask whether you want a scholarship or not so indicate you want a scholarship there’s also a second question whether they
They’re supposed to consider you after after you after after after getting admitted whether they’re supposed to consider you whether or not you get a scholarship you need to indicate that so they know if if you don’t have a scholarship uh do they consider you for admission is the admission going to be
Useful if you don’t have a scholarship so you just get yourself right um this is my financial background this is what I can manage to afford so if if what you can manage could at least help you get into Barclay even without a scholarship you could say uh consider me
For application consider me for admission even without a scholarship because you you if you can afford to come here and and maybe work part-time and uh and look for other scholarship and other AIDS when you study is still okay and but if you cannot and then even if you’re admitted that scholarship is
Not going to help you uh that admission is not going to help you you just indicate that do not consider me for admission if I don’t get the scholarship so you then wait to be nominated for a scholarship the MasterCard admission is gonna go through your application and they’re gonna nominate
You for scholarship and the application for school and scholarship are two different applications so once you’re done applying for school and you get admitted to the school and you nominated for scholarship then you start your uh scholarship application it’s a different application uh just just share
The link to to that application so you start applying and the all scholarships are competitive and you’re not just competing with people from your own country you’re competing with people from all countries so first my advice I will I’ll say apply to as many scholarships as possible to increase to
Increase your challenges because um MasterCard Foundation scholarship is very competitive and something else don’t give up if you don’t get the scholarship just just keep applying uh again and again because if that’s your only chance to study then you want to keep trying you don’t want to give up
After you’re not admitted in the group it’s just that Hussein is not in the group I would have asked the same share history because he applied a couple of times and never got in and and he got to work and eventually came to Buckley and uh according to him this was the best
Time to come to Berkeley because he had had experience and and worked for a while before uh before coming to buckle so even if you don’t get admitted at a fast um I would encourage you not to give up and continue application and something else uh as as excellent as I
Said we have I I just wrote I’m gonna after after I finish talking I’m gonna type what is required uh during the application process you want to start working on it right now you will not have enough time so you need motivational letter you need a portfolio statement or purpose personal statement
And you need to like fill on your essays you need to get the difference between like a statement of purpose and a personal statement a motivational letter so you don’t confuse them during application you could always watch videos in in learn online or even uh
Reach out to us and we could help you and then there are so many courses at UC Berkeley so if you go to the UC Berkeley website you’ll find the courses are ranked according to the alphabet in alphabetical order so what you want to do is choose a course you’re passionate
About uh choose something that you like and then look if that costs are is receiving some funding maybe from Mastercard or any other scholarship before you before you start applying and well once you start applying and uh just put it at the back of your mind that
You’re competing with so many people so make sure your application is the best uh something else be sincere and well I would say you have to that the distance between uh applications and the distance between application and when you like have your interview for the MasterCard Foundation scholarship is
Spaced out like I I did my application in September I think in September or between September and December the applications are open but my Mastercard Foundation scholarship came in 2023 I think in March that’s when I was writing the essays so you wanna you wanna tell the truth because you want to be
Consistent you don’t want to write this in your application and then we ask questions during your interview and you’re answering different questions just because you wanted to come here because even your personal statement reflects who you are if you tell them the truth about yourself so
Uh oh I would just encourage you to be sincere and just write a very good application put it at the back of your mind you’re competing with a lot of people and if you don’t get scholarship it doesn’t mean you’re not qualified to or you’re not good enough uh someone
Else she’s not in the group she was telling me I applied for scholarship uh in Australia I never got in and I just thought I’m not good enough but the thing is it’s not you know good enough is if there’s so many people I mean there’s so many people who do this
Application so even if you don’t get it uh well I don’t know well most people even I did not get my my scholarship during my first application I had to try a couple of times so even if you don’t get a scholarship now it does not mean
You can try and if maybe you can afford some part of paying for your school and accommodation here uh bearing in mind is very expensive you could try doing that and you could come here and look for a job and work as you study right if you that’s why during the application
Usually indicate that even if you don’t have uh even if you don’t have a scholarship you would like to consider yourself as someone who would want to receive an admission from school so you still get an admission even if you’re not nominated for the scholarship if you
And if a nomination for a scholarship you start a whole new different application for the scholarship so make sure you have your documents in order make sure you you write your your letter statement of purpose personal statement early so that you’re prepared uh I’ll just I’ll just type in
In the group chat the the type of documents required from you and something else um different programs of course different programs will have different questions people in policy people in development engineering mechanical engineering your application will have different questions for you maybe why mechanical engineering I use the battery
So we have uh different people pursuing different courses so if you could reach out to us we could try connecting you with people in that department yeah that is all for me excellent yes thank you I’d like you to stay on um respite I just want to share some some stuff as well
Um yeah respa is absolutely right and thank you risper for that detailed um that detailed uh information about scholarships I’ll just I’ll just have a few things to add um please note that when the department also offers scholarships and you can actually get full scholarship which they will call like a fellowship
Um to you I know of someone who got a full Fellowship from her department and it covered her feeding her accommodation her fees and she has a job like she’s a GSI in here so yeah you can actually have that kind of um scholarship so look
And to look forward to it as well house is not she doesn’t I think she’s working but we would for MasterCard we’re not we’re not required to work right Bible study but she has to work but her fees are covered then there’s something critical I did not see um for the
Graduate program which is your program now when you’re looking for your program um you could you could you might have um what they call it now you might have the name of the program you’re looking you might have something in mind but it might not be called exactly that in
Berkeley like it might be called something else for example I really wanted a development program but I was even struggling to see which was going to fit it had to take me someone having me to pay attention to the course outline looking at it from different perspective
For me to realize that oh development engineering was a very good fit for me so please don’t be boxed that it has to be this program um James you want to say something do you want to turn on your videos so I can add you to the conversation as well okay thank you
So um James is from public policy for those that are interested in public policy and so yeah and he’s a baba this he’ll have a lot to say so yeah don’t be so bossy that way it has to be the name of the program has to be mass
Communications it could be you come in for journalism and then you have this pass to take or you come in for information science and then you’re focusing on another part for example if spa and I are in development engineering we have core courses but our concentrations are different my concentration is Healthcare
Transformation and she is an energy and resources so you see you can just have those different um different parts so yeah James introduce yourself to your muted so please introduce yourself excellent uh my name is James superio um from Kenya and I’m taking public policy
I’d like to add to what uh Elizabeth has said because it’s something that I encountered um let’s see depending on the program that you are applying to you might find they’ve said we’ve weaved these requirements let’s take the gr re or the GMAT but considering you want to be
Considered for scholarship don’t opt out if they say this they’ve waived still submit that requirement because at the very end you will find its James and another person and they deciding who do we nominate for this different scholarships and they will evaluate and they will look at oh James don’t submit
This yeah we had with it but risper here submitted this requirements in as much as we had waived it and so they will consider risper because risper put in more effort in as much there was a waiver so please please please just because you will find some of those
Things if it’s the GRE let’s say like our school they might mention we’ve worked that for this round of applications but please submit that requirement whether it’s a portfolio whether it’s a additional essay I know in some schools you have the statement of purpose you have the personal history statement in
Our school we had a personal history statement and there was also an optional essay even if it’s not um even if it’s just written optional submit it don’t worry about the number of visits you will write but know that the more you submit the higher your chances of getting admitted
And also being awarded a scholarship thank you battery Excellence yeah I think I think that’s brilliant yeah he’s right if you have it do the competition is high now I need you to know actually those from Nigeria you’re going to be competing among others from African countries and you’re also going to be
Competing with people from Nigeria very populated and Ghana we have more of them here so you also have that competition most other countries are not that are quite um and not as represented as that and so you want to make sure that if you have
Any way to have an edge you have an edge another thing you need to know is both UC Berkeley and MasterCard are big with academics but they are also big with leadership um work that you’ve done in terms of leadership commencement to give back and
All of that so if you have it doesn’t have to be an NGO that’s a non-profit so if you have something like um even if you’ve done it in a place of work in Your Capacity you can do that I also noticed that most people um what they think the issue with the
Application most times is not that they are not good or that is just that they struggle with communicating what they have done and the the impacted their work and all of that um so you want people to go through it if you’re struggling with that or you
Get help and that’s why it’s important to to start early okay um um James we have a few people here interested in public policy and I’ve spoken you want to speak a bit about your personal application process into public policy or anything they should hinge about or how interesting or if the
Course is worth coming into yeah um I will go back to what Excellence I said I have the end in mind you know why you want to do public policy know why where you want to work um after know what kind of organizations you want to engage with because uh
And this is just um like I found out later Buckley is really busy and even if I had Excellency so here things move really fast and before you realize right now we’re approaching our meantime exams like in our school and it’s just better than it’s literally one
Month since we started classes so as long as you know why you want to do that because uh where you want to work after and what brings you to that course because those are the things that will be of interest and if if you’re just Faking It
Even you won’t be able to get past the admissions because it will be very hard for you to write those essays on the other side public policy is really good Buckley or you’ve had is the number one Public University in the US and also in the world whereas the public policy
Analysis program is the number one in the U.S this is according to U.S times ranking so we’ve been number one the last three years and that speaks a lot in terms of the work that is done by The Faculty but also the input that and they kind of
Candidates their program attracts so uh it’s a really great program we have a very beautiful school um and last week we just had our annual and alumni conference which was really good we were able to meet uh alumni who were when were there when the school was
Started in 1970 so it’s like 53 years and these people are still there uh I can’t say much than that but um it’s a great program it’s really it’s a great program uh I don’t think I have any downsides to it uh this is what you’ve just had like but
Please really I don’t want to use the word chaotic but so much is happening so much is happening so um the fact that I’ve been I was out of school for about six years yes it’s been a quite an uphill just getting back on track with that kind of an extremely
Busy environment and yeah I thank God for everything I can’t complain I have very supportive friends you’ve seen them here Excellence Marion okay and we’re trying to help each other and staying as a community yeah thank you students yeah just um someone is asking games is GRE requirement wait for
The public policy program he said he can see it in the application requirements I’m not sure unless I go and check what uh they’re asking for this year yeah for me I submitted it for me I submitted it oh I’m actually I’m just taking it I’m just looking at the website
It’s not been waived you have to submit it okay yeah but say just to go back to the other um the main like the reason why I raised that issue is because when you look at the applications they are competing with people from China they’re competing with people from
Indonesia and these people even have to do like their English tests let’s say if you’re a Kenyan you know the English test is wait for you because our our uh most of all our decrees in Kenya offered in English so you’re competing with even
Here SMS are in India and you have to do additional tests so for you if you decide you wave these things when it comes to the admission committee evaluating who to consider my friend you’ll they’ll be like these people are put in more effort than this one why
Should we give this person a chance so we find it’s a very small thing but if that’s what determines whether you get the admission or not and no as risper said before we even talk about uh the scholarships you need to be admitted first so make sure you get everything
Right on the admission piece because now that’s the only way you’ll be able to get to this scholarship the scholarship beat so if you don’t get the admission uh even the scholarship you won’t even get because although they are dependent you can only get the admission application if you first get an
Admission yeah so my program doesn’t need GRE by the way so if you want to try my programming plan so response to talk a bit about the application theme um what is like and if you can get a waiver oh yeah I just remembered that I forgot
To talk about the admission fee so Barclay has an admission fee uh and for someone who comes from yeah he has an admission fee and from someone who comes from like Africa well it’s not much here but when you’re there it’s a lot of money so uh and you could request for an
Application fee waiver and give reasons why you want an application fee waiver but you might not get an application fee wherever so for those people who are working or you have some job start saving now you start saving now so that you have enough money because like in Kenya it
Was over 17 000. Kenya Shillings when I was applying so if you you want to start saving now so that it’s one of the methods they used to really reduce the number of applicants it’s not fair I know it’s not fair but you have to you have to find a
Way through it even the iOS the GRE and someone is asking do we have support for GRE I don’t think so you have to you have to look for the money for the GRE and I know GRE and GMAT in our countries are very expensive I I did my IELTS for
Another scholarship I was applying and I had to pay over 30 000 Kenyan shillings to just do the GRE and I’m pretty sure GMAT and GRE are just as expensive so you want to start saving for the applications right now so if you need Jerry or GMAT uh you could get you could
Get them and for the admission fee if it’s not waived you do try to like give good reasons for an application feeway but it’s right there during admission they they tell you uh you make payment or request for an application fee waiver so you want to request for an
Application fee wherever give very good reason when you go to an application fee waiver and don’t ask for application fee waiver before you finish submitting everything that’s required of the of the of the scholarship no the scholarship the application process because they will be like you’ve requested for an
Application fee waiver but we don’t even see your personal statement we don’t see your motivational letter because those are the things that are gonna guide people to see that this person maybe comes from a needy background or um a financially challenged background so that they consider you for the
Application fee waiver so do not ask for the application fee waiver before you done something eating everything in your application then request for a submission fee waiver and if you don’t get one start preparing because you cannot compare a scholarship that gives you over 74 000 just with the the 140
Dollars or whatever money they are asking for at that time it looks completely insignificant in the long run so you start saving now and if you don’t get the application fee waiver just do the payment at least do the payment and increase your chances for getting the scholarship because it’s just easier for
You to pay a little application fee waiver and have your life sorted for the next 15 months or two years rather than you like this the scholarship because you just did not like find very little money compared to the scholarship you’re getting right yeah yeah that is what I wanted to add
On that yeah yeah so application fee for those that are not in Korea that don’t understand is about 155 dollars um so that’s what it is and like Joseph as like James just said register for admission webinars and you might be able to learn from the admission team so let
Me give you an exam I got an application waiver and let me tell you what I did so when I I said I discovered the course identify because the program I wanted to do like a month before before the application opened and so I tried to prepare what I needed now once the
Application opened I opened it up and I answered all the questions that I knew I had answers to at that moment so I could say like 70 to 75 of my application was done um I just needed some basic things an idea to verify some stuff and so because
I was already on the system MasterCard was calling for a webinar I think they usually do that maybe a month or two weeks after the application opens they call for this web now to inform students from sub-Saharan Africa that there’s this opportunity for you there’s MasterCard and then they walk you
Through the process and all but I think if you’ve not registered or you’re not on the system and you’ve not put some basic information you might not get that email to notify you that this is coming up so I had put those things and so the system identified in fact the Mary told
Me that because I was from so so and so they had I actually attend the webinar and also I read the stuff for the webinar and I attended and at the web now the offered that they were going to be giving application waivers to some people not everyone and that an
Application waiver does not guarantee that you’re going to get the scholarship but they’re just going to be giving to some people and not everyone and so they’ll be a separate application for it and they send the application that one was a whole application all together it
Was so many questions so so many but I answered them and then I continue with my application and I try to keep the 155 that was required for their education however I got notified that my application um fee had been waived right so and I know that there are also some
Departments that offer application waivers and all of that but then I had that one Fabulous As extra money for me so please by all means if you can save your money please do save um if you can to save um that money um for your application fee and then if you can
Get waivers you can’t um Hannah do you want to come up should I bring you up she’s sharing that there’s a new policy that on diversity quotas which makes it difficult um even more difficult yeah there’s also diversity quotas here so even when I when I came in I thought I didn’t know
Other people that got the application over because I didn’t really know other people here but when I got in I realized that it was most likely they gave one person per department or something I don’t know but do you know that any application that came whether the waiver
Whether the scholarship whatever it is I was very quick to submit so submitting early is very important so that they are considering and maybe every other thing is in check you might just want to um you just to have something Hannah do you want to come up
To talk about that a bit okay um congratulations through my things but um what I was talking about again Hannah is also in public policy um so yeah yes I’m I’m with the Goldman School of Public Policy my name is SNM but I also answered to Hannah and
Um I’m actually doing the mdp program which is the masters of development practice program and and one thing that I wanted you to note is that last year um there was a there was diversity cultures but um Beckley and some other that Berkeley being the first Public University in the
U.S Another Universe the first private university they were taken to court with the the concept of diversity quotas and they lost which means that moving forward they won’t really consider diversity in a lot of their applications that they are going to do which means that you have to up your game with your
Statements which whatever submissions that you have to do you have to do extra work because before they will have to say okay at least we need one black person or one person from India or blah blah blah and even with those diversity quotas in place in my class there are
About maybe 50 being Indian and about two or three people being African so noting that even with diversity quotas this is how the class landscape look and now that they’ve taken that away and they are going to do everything based on their applications which means that if you are African you
Have to up your game there is no genuine there’s no space created for you in the name of diversity anymore so just up your game with that and another thing that I wanted people you to notice that I applied last year I got into Berkeley
And I applied again this year and I also got in again but lastly I didn’t get the MasterCard for wishes scholarship program so um adding on to what um was excellent said you have to be very fast with a lot of these things last year I wasn’t very fast with the
MasterCard application process but I was very good with my with my applications my essays I got my recommendations in way before the deadline and all of that this year I finished everything like within two weeks when applications went open and then I got in again and quickly
Went on to do the MasterCard Foundation um application so fast that so that I I know that if there is time you know if the if you have time then you can sit back and then review your application and see the little things that you missed and then make it better but if
You don’t have time you’re doing a video last minute you’ll be in trouble so even if you don’t have the application fee ready now just start the application even if you don’t know if you want to come here or not you just start I mean when you are
Done and you don’t want to submit you have that option but again just start so that you know what the process looks like you know what you have to submit you start asking for the recommendations and then you get in so that’s what I wanted to know just make sure that this
Time you are doing you are putting if you wanted to put in 50 now you’re putting 70 80 because those code tests are no longer free yeah thank you yeah you’re right there are so many issues here and those guys can be really competitive so yeah please
Um wrist about uh Marion is that something we like to contribute as well thank you very much yes and um thank you assalam is from Ghana by the way um for those of you from Ghana oh thanks Excellence um and really not much I mean it is important for you to basically know
Which particular College you really want to get to early enough like everyone else has said um and you should also think outside MasterCard Foundation MasterCard Foundation can not take in everyone so in case you’re sort of like looking out for a scholarship or funding you have to
Sort of like think about what other funding resources available for you to get into UC Berkeley so um a number of times you like you know put your eggs in one basket but you also have to be very um realistic and know that scholarship there’s no way all of you
Are gonna get it right um and so the question is what are the other available scholarships um you know like a juicy Buckley that could support you um I if you are a refugee for example they’ve just launched a new scholarship and these are some of the resources that
We’ll be sharing in the WhatsApp group for you guys to sort of like maybe um you know like be familiar with but also just being um very you know open-minded and up to speed with okay can I go on the website can I check various resources um and just being you know like
Um flexible as well uh but that’s really what I wanted sort of like add in terms of I think my colleagues have really done Justice with preparations and all that but just think about what else you know um and and if you’ve also noticed maybe the other thing is that most because I
Also applied to UC Berkeley um last year I got the admission but I did not get funding and I was uh I defied my admission so what does that mean it means like scholarships um on campus are very very very competitive and not everyone gets gets in and you
Just have to mentally prepare and and you know like be ready to say okay I’ll remember when I go to UC Berkeley what do I need to do like where are you as a person um so I got in last year but I didn’t come but this year I was able to
Understand the whole process so um just understand the application process like understand because if you don’t get for example admission you don’t get this scholarship so which one do you start prioritizing and when yeah but otherwise I think we should be able to utilize the the group
And and ask as many questions as possible because that’s why we have that group you know created and the other thing is that that group does not only have um people who are accusable it also has people who are at in other universities so you find that means in Arizona
Arizona State University you’ll find others who are we’re going to add somebody thinking you know Harvard Oxford the other people have been to Cape Town like Africa as well has different other universities that you could as well look into and so I’ve been living let’s say in Uganda but I would
Like to go to Cape Town and study a good South Africa and study what does it look like so just think outside the books as well and ask if so for the other options are presented it should be to get something out of you thank you very much Mary and Marion is
From Uganda and she’s in the journalism program and thank you so so much Marion for that and she started the group as well I’ve shared the WhatsApp group in the chat box so you can join um as good as it we’re so blessed and privileged to have a lecturer with us a
Professor with us at this webinar today and we’re going to be giving him room to share I think you all are so lucky I challenge those of you that said you’re looking at energy um and you’re looking at transition to renewable energy and all of that I’m
Going to allow respa to introduce him and she wants to talk a little bit about recommendations as well but yeah we have Professor Cameron with us you have the floor oh hi I forgot to say that you supposed to submit over three recommendations so you wanna ask people who uh know you
Very well like your lecturers or people you’ve worked with they’re supposed to personally submit their application for you you know supposed to like submit the application yourself so you want to contact them before time as early as possible give them time to draft their accommodation and uh the recommendations
So that they could upload it to the Barclay website once you put their information at the once you put the information on the application process they will get a link so that they could share their recommendations with you so you want to like reach out to people who
Are actually gonna create time and draft the accommodation and submit it for you because you might finish the application process and then the people you added as the recommenders they do not submit their application or the recommendation on time so you don’t want any inconveniency you don’t want to give
Them any reason not to give you funding or not to give you uh admission because it’s so competitive you want to make sure everything they need you have so start preparing and you have everything in advance um we’re lucky today to have a professor who is in ag energy and resources for
Those people who want to transition to energy and he has a labcorrel I’m gonna allow him to uh to introduce himself and say more about his love and and the work he does here okay Professor Carmen well whisper thank you so much and thanks everyone for joining so you know I heard
Um on the comments a number of features about the application process so before I mention my own laboratory let me just say a couple things about what I found to be successful first is that as you were saying getting your letters organized and those things is critical
But one of the things that makes a big difference is that for each program reaching out not so much to the professors they generally actually aren’t that useful at helping you in the application process but usually the department manager or the student affairs officer they often have different names because one of the
Things that those people do which is incredibly helpful is that they know the scholarships and fellowships available at their universities so here at Berkeley for example we have several fellowships in our Center for African studies that are exclusively for students coming from Africa we have similar groups for
Southeast Asia and other places but often the department manager the student affairs officer will say well if you can write this additional essay which is often one you’ve already written we can also put it in front of this other group and so letting the team at the University think about which other Fellowship
Opportunities is often a really useful feature so for example my own research group that risper introduced I put the link in the chat it’s called rail the renewable and appropriate energy Laboratory we in my department have a focus on supporting students who don’t come from the standard background that don’t come from the
Fanciest U.S or British universities and so we have fun set aside that are specifically designed to help first generation students or students coming from backgrounds overseas and so we allocate those funds in conjunction with our department so in my laboratory we study off-grid energy we study mini grids we do Power Systems
Analysis we look at rare earth materials and the critical role they play in powering the clean energy Revolution through batteries through solar panels and we will not only admit students to our group but work with our department and then a few units across campus that have funding for or visiting students so
Risper has already talked about the MasterCard Fellowship it’s one of the the best ones out there but as she said you need to be admitted first and then the process to get the fellowship comes up but there are several others on our campus again we have the center for Africa studies at us
Funding I know friends of mine at Stanford they also have a center for African studies they also look for funding in the new colleges of data Science Berkeley has one and MIT has one um they also have new Fellowship money because the colleges are first launching so really expressing what your interests
Are is a great guide for the people in the Departments to find out what the best match is so one of the things that I find actually is not so useful that this might come as a bit of a surprise is that very detailed letters of what you
Want to do what you want to study during your Master’s or PhD people often send in very detailed plans they’ve worked in in impressive detail on what they want to study and many British universities and many in Japan they want that they want you to tell them a very specific research plan
Often developed with a professor in advance I can only speak for my University and for the team at MIT because I work closely with their college of data science we actually don’t want you to write an incredibly specific PhD or Master’s project description we want you to talk about your interests
What motivated you what skills you have what skills you hope to learn but the thinking here at at er is that if you already have an incredibly detailed research plan you probably didn’t need to go to graduate school because you probably are working on it and so what we actually
Like is the reverse that you tell what area you’re interested in you say you know I’m strong in engineering but I really want to learn economics or I’m quite strong in critical social theory but I feel like I need to learn Vector engineering so what to hear is
Because you’re likely to become an interdisciplinary scholar we want to know what areas you feel well prepared in and what areas that you’re going to learn here but beyond that too detailed a research plan at least for Berkeley always ends up being something that makes it harder for us to see you
Fitting into the group because much of our balancing the new entering class is we want roughly a good balance of students working on energy or on land use change and ecology or on Urban economics and we don’t think so much about your detailed plan we say well
We want to have these areas well represented so a super detailed plan which I know you probably have to write if you’re also applying to Cambridge or Oxford or Birmingham or some universities where your PhD is very very focused we actually encourage something quite different yeah I know that means
You effectively are going to write an extra essay but if you talk to the department manager the student affairs person they can actually tell you oh yeah for this unit really be specific or here just list your areas of interest and so I know that may come as a bit of a
A different perspective but for us it makes quite a difference because we’re trying to select you based on the person not so much based on your project plans so risk happy to do it whatever whatever way you like I’m happy to answer a few questions or if that was kind of enough
Because you have a quite a big group but I I but I hope that’s helpful at least in terms of of the application process to Berkeley yes it’s it’s absolutely helpful thank you very much that that was so good um respect do you think you take a
Question or two yeah yeah we can start taking the questions any questions they have for us or any questions you can just raise your hand or add the questions to the group and just look at them yeah especially those of you interested in energy and resources and yeah I actually
Saw kimanga’s hand up uh and some here um so I had a question regarding the GPA requirements um if someone has done undergraduate and a master’s program um will they consider both or either for the for the GPA requirements so I can speak for Berkeley we
Definitely look at both and we look at we look at them even more than we used to because Berkeley across all units is not exactly the same but the the decision here was to de-emphasize to not pay as much attention to the graduate record exams
And the reason is that what we feel is that those standardized tests mainly are a test on your affluence the students who have more money more time to prepare often do well on those tests and students that haven’t done it don’t do as well and so by de-emphasizing the GRE and the various
Tests that you might have taken that grades and your letters of recommendation become more important yeah thank you um Simi you can go ahead now okay um hi thanks thank you for the session it’s been extremely helpful still um I have a question it’s not in relations
Energy but I hope that you can answer it’s in relation to law um I’m considering applying for the llm program I have started um the application process we have to apply through lsac um but over the course of the webinar I hear that you need to apply through an account with UC Berkeley
Um and then submit the application through there I wanted to know if it’s a process that I have to do side by side so while applying with lsac um I still have to create a UC Berkeley account um so that was the clarity I needed so unfortunately I don’t know the answer
Um because I’m not in the law school um I know of people who come through that pathway um I believe as you said you do have to apply for that lsac which is sort of the standardized route but the same thing holds I do recommend reaching out so for
Example here we have a very strong environmental law program and that program not only has it also has some topics that it’s working on from year to year right now just for example in Berkeley um there’s a strong effort on community empowerment through the legal process and there’s an effort on International
Legal institutions such as through the climate change negotiations so reaching out and telling their interest is important I know it varies though when you look at different law schools um I was talking at the African climate Summit just uh two weeks ago in in Nairobi to someone who’s applying to the Yale
Um the typical environmental law program at Yale University um they had a they had a sort of a different Focus area so reaching out but I wish I could answer more detail on the on the the standardized process I believe you have to put you have to upload your letters of recommendations
Through there but I’m just not sure it’s not as a non-lawyer okay so like you said please visit your program website to see the requirements whatever your program website says it’s fine or you can go through the uh reach out to your advisor book a call and they
Can explain to you better but really whatever your program website says um Stands Tall Marion you wanted to say something yeah sure and and when you and like you’ve mentioned and everyone else says is as mentioned in this call you see Buckley is sort of like one of those
Universities that would answer any questions that you have whether it is small or it is you know like complex there’s just the way the information is available and and I think before you even like sort of think about even asking someone like a random Google search could be the first step that
You’re going to take uh because you’re going to realize that every information even asking and the trouble you’re going through is already covered most of the questions that you have have already been asked by a number of international students like ourselves who are here and what UC Berkeley does is that they try
To make information so available for everyone and and so for the question around like like um applying for the LM you know program there’s just a link I’ve just shared and it clearly stipulates everything you even need to do and that applies for those that journalism those like
Um attacks Huskies like this School of Business and all that and so please don’t hesitate still to ask me questions but it is nice that you try fast to chip the website or the program um and and from what I’m what I’m reading what I’m seeing the application
Process seems so complex so it’s a good thing that you’ve started already and you’re working on that um hi then thank you very much Myron there’s a question here is your lab purely for research or is it also academic based ah good good question um the lab groups that we have are
Generally research focused but frequently when you join a group then your advisor is that Professor so even though risper for example is in a different program than my lab group um it doesn’t really matter so she is a member of the laboratory um gets some funding from the laboratory
Has questions of course I’ve made sure that she took my course so you know there’s some there’s some pressure to um but we um we try to do it so that the research groups the the lab groups are really focused on your research path but the advisors that you’ll get will be the
Ones who not only recommend courses but also give advice if there’s for example three different microeconomics courses or there’s two different courses on Power Systems which one might be more suited so we do try to advise as well thank you very much so thank you very much
Um Professor Carmen is it okay if students can reach out if they are interested in your lab or um working with you is it fine for them to send you an email or something yeah they certainly can um and again I think many of the groups
Are this way so a message to me is fine but generally I just forwarded to that same person I mentioned that that student affairs officer because the first round of questions um are really much more about the department than about actually the individual lab group um I do know unfortunately there are
Some professors who don’t respond to messages like that at all um because there’s just too many um and so really directing it to the Department which may be a little slower to respond and beginning than a faculty member but once you get connected to that person
Um do you get much to much quicker responses so I put in the chat um I think I did the link to our Center for African studies I actually don’t see oh oh I hadn’t said it here oh there it goes so the person who manages student affairs there
Um Martha savedra is someone that risper for example has worked closely with and I think she think you met with her in Nairobi as well I believe um her her job is really focused around Fellowship student support and is is the best person I know of here in terms of
What are the other funding opportunities I know that for example at UCLA they also have a very active director of the center for African studies um and so reaching out to that person is often a better start to the faculty member um again most of the questions about
That faculty get are too General they’re usually things like what topics are your lab working on and we view that often as someone just trying to make contact and sort of you know get in an email dialogue usually the projects in the laboratory are listed on their website
And so what I’ll often do is send back the link to my lab Pages which the students probably already seen But then also connect the student to our student affairs officer who will help on the on the app application process thank you so much for creating the time
And I would like to say uh you in the application process any question before even going to faculty and going to the to the the office I feel that we went through the same process so we could really guide you because we went through the same challenges we went to through
The same difficulties and you just reach out I I have people who have reached out to me they are not even in my country they’re from Ghana Nigeria really anyone because we went through the same process so if you’re applying to the same Department as us if you’re applying to
Policy gyms will guide you better and then even if you reach out to faculties you’ll have like uh exactly you’ll know exactly what you want from them because most of the things are most of the simple simple question we will have elaborated to you and
Yeah you can reach out I I Martha and Merlin came to Kenya uh because we were reaching out to them all the time during our application process and they they called me and James to go reach out to them actually that’s how I used to got connected to Professor Carmen I had so
Many questions I was worried about my interview and he was in Kenya so you just reach out to people and you’ll be surprised by this by the response you can reach out to people through Linkedin you just see someone using battery just message them just reach out they will
Respond they’ll respond they’ll create time they can answer most of your questions so yeah that is it thank you so much for creating the time early this morning it was so much early and coming to we really appreciate it we really appreciate you creating the time
And coming to guide the students uh who are applying thank you so much for your help and your support and thank you everyone who attended the meeting to guide the other students even from our cohorts Marion Hannah James just everyone and thank you Excellence this was a really good
Session I hope most of you learned much from it about the application about the scholarship the courses available you if you have any question we still have the WhatsApp group you can reach out you could ask the question this recording will be shared for those people who are
Unable to join the meeting because maybe it was early or late in the countries and I hope that is it I don’t see more hands than we have answered all questions so have a great day evening night yeah or how can I join the WhatsApp group we’ll just re-share the link
And maybe a few things about the WhatsApp group uh the people who are admins in the WhatsApp group are not paid to do what they are doing these are just um young leaders from across the continent who appreciate the fact that they they were able to get to UC
Berkeley and they’re just giving back under supporting you to see that you get information that you need so please one rule of Engagement do not inbox and add me inbox them like directly uh the group has been created for you to engage and us questions that when the admin comes
In to sort of like um ask a question that you have another person within the group is able to sort of like benefit from that and the second rule of Engagement is that I think people are sort of like not sure there’s maybe a right question and the wrong one
They are not right or wrong question that group has been created for you no one is you know like sort of like assessing whether what you’re saying is true or false so just ask as many questions as you can and trust me there are people who are very ready and
They’re willing to sort of like figure out okay where could this information be who could be knowing this thing and all that um and so the next steps I think um I don’t know if gems you’re gonna be doing this briefly before maybe we close off
Or if you if you basically are done the next steps are really very clear in terms of let’s utilize the WhatsApp group um and we do have different representatives from across the the campus people who have joined who have like apply to different you know like
Colleges so ask us who you need and let us connect you to that person if that makes sense who knew that you know like Prof would be here and he is like he doesn’t even know us right like so much I mean but he’s here and people at
Buckley are uniquely met that way they have this niceness that kindness that and willingness to support and we want to tap into that and and ask ourselves who is the person this particular applicant needs and we should be able to find that person I mean one has been
Successful so I just want to also really really have this shout out for the team respa Excellence gems and Hannah and Prof thank you guys so much for really making the time and yeah and all our participants over to you uh respite excellence yeah thank you very much I just saw your
Highlight Chris you might want to try again later um maybe because of the surge or something refresh or try another browser but the link actually works and then like Myron said will always communicate in the group we have an engagement in the next 15 minutes and I’m sorry we
Have to wrap this up um okay someone’s saying okay send me a direct message but I want to read it out he said I have studied readable energy technology as a course I was asking whether I can get any connection with Professor Dan Cannon right or John Bosco
For mentorship and guidance through the field um Professor come in I don’t know yeah that’s actually harder um one of the challenges is Berkeley which is a public university actually very difficult for us to engage with students who are not at our University unless the university that you’re at has
A partnership so for example McCrary and Uganda has a partnership with Berkeley and so we can sometimes support students but General mentoring is really very difficult because of the number of people that that um that will ask but more importantly because almost all of the services we
Have are so are for current students so what I generally say is really what risper um said uh when I came on and that is apply to the universities that you’re interested in um ask for a fee waiver some of them will grant it some of them will not so you
Have to make some choices because the applications are expensive um but but applying and then when you get in it’s a different story so I’m able to assist students who are able to find scholarships but General mentoring when you’re not at a partner University is very hard for us at least at public
Universities private ones the Stanford’s Dukes mits are different but for us at a State University it’s it’s quite a challenge okay thank you very much um thank you very much so for everyone um you can put in your questions in the WhatsApp chat and when we’re done with
Our meeting later today we have a very long day um we will get back to all of you I want to see very big thank you to Professor Carmen he really added colors to this meeting uh we’re very grateful thank you to risper thank you Marion thank you James thank you and
Um okay as well um we’ll share the reply to this much later today or tomorrow we have a meeting now so maybe tomorrow or later so you can have the replay I think most questions were answered will we share most of the links as well to the
WhatsApp group that can help you I hope you found value in this session and it was as valuable as you um you’d love it to be thank you very much everyone and have a very nice day bye thanks so much bye everyone thank you
