Are all of us very much every question yes or like however you feel yeah first question is how did you decide which sorority was best for you basically do your research to find out what best fits you for me personally i couldn’t imagine being anything other than the first
Black sorority created i really wouldn’t i couldn’t envision myself being anything else yeah not to like this any others so i mean like but they’re really vital yeah there’s no other go ahead this is still running yeah i chose it because like my freshman year i didn’t really know a lot about it
Like about um the nights uh in general then i came to college and they were like the first i just knew like i started doing my research right then and there like after they came out and i just knew like ali said like i already knew that’s exactly what i was looking for
There was no other way so it was that or nothing so very very very real i knew that i was always going to join aka but like i never knew when and so when i got to the university um i saw our pro our profiles and then that’s when i knew like
I’m going to be one at this university i was just i felt so inspired and i just knew that it was just meant for me um after seeing how they carried themselves and then just how they were looked at by other people and like people really look up to them and
They were inspiring other people i just knew i wanted to be one here that’s another thing look at older people of your organization how um alpha women carried themselves i was so inspired and wanted to be that and now we are that so yes and that’s actually the main reason that i wanted
To join um the sorority because first and finals and being an alpha woman is a big deal like people think highly of you and look at you like you’re their girl because you’re that girl like then i really fell in love when i was looking forward to like trying to go to
Hbcu in high school so that hyped me up more but even at the school that i’m at i still feel loved i still love my letters i still love my lessons i’m really glad for the position i was playing this one kind of goes with that but
At the same time i don’t know how do you like being an aka i love it i love it i love that i love it that’s all it’s crazy because like i still catch myself like like sitting in moments of shock i’m just like i looked up to these people for so many
Years and then just like look at my corner and see my line jacket or just see my pearls sitting out it’s so overwhelming but i’m just super grateful that i’m still one me too how do you show interest without giving it away i personally just try to go to all the their events
That they were hosting like showing your face they kind of get the memo like speaking to them when you see them in public like saying hi yes definitely speak i am very shy but i was at every event and even if i didn’t speak to someone
I was there to show my face but definitely speak now that we are in the organization it’s hella weird when people don’t talk to you yeah so we’re normal people like walk out and be like hi introduce yourself your name your grade like thank you go get the memo and when you
Go to these events like just try to show your face or when you see there’s about to be a group photo or something get in the picture like they look back at that to look and see who may be like prospects and things like that make sure that it’s genuine like don’t
Just try to be in their face to be in their face right yeah make sure that you’re creating a genuine relationship with them don’t go sorority hopping because they will know they i am in a sorority we will know folks talk they talk about yeah don’t overdo it
When they say do your research what are the specifics i feel like that’s kind of self-explanatory the things you can find on the internet about the organization are things you should know such as your founders colors motto like basic things you would if somebody were to come up and ask you
What is it would you know it it’s not something that you’re not allowed to know or that you can’t find out google like kind of want to say i think one of the main things to know is like their mission statement because that’s your whole reason of joining
Right so i feel like if you don’t know the mission statement of your sorority or your fraternity whatever then why are you doing it like that’s the whole like those are your whole values and like how you’re supposed to carry yourself and like this the different standards
You’re supposed to hold and i just feel like that should be one of the first things you learn if anything right also look at their targets and the type of service work that they do to see if that aligns with your personal values i think that’s a big one as well
Bottom line research is everything you can personally find prior to joining the organization how can i join if my school doesn’t offer it you can’t right uh also some schools have like joint school chapters so if your school specifically doesn’t have it maybe like there’s a metro y
Chapter um i would look into that or joining grad chapter i don’t have to be in graduate school to join grad chapter i thought that was a thing but that’s not a thing if you are not in the process of obtaining a degree and or already
Have one and you’re going to a master’s you cannot join a phd organization at all it doesn’t work like that sorry what’s the best part about being a part of alpha kappa alpha i would say the sisterhood and always having a networking opportunity literally anywhere we go in the country anywhere
Yeah like we have sisters everywhere um always an opportunity to just like connect off of this alone yes um and also the fact that it’s lifelong is something else that i really love because we’re always going to have this i feel like coming into this sorority i have a good support system
Like i know i can always fall back and have someone there are you the first in your family to be greek well my aunt was but i’m the person might immediately family yeah same for me as well no i have a dad uncle cousin brother sister i’m bi-racial so my mom
Said i don’t think even my dad’s side no one is greek so the first and hoping to have a legacy one day yay i have an aunt and then a cousin that’s also an ak and then i also have another cousin who is an acaba now i have quite a few
D9 in my family how do you prioritize your greek life in school it was hard yeah i was going to ask my seniors first off i think i’m gonna ask y’all first okay so i would um try to do my homework as quickly as i could so like let’s say if
I got an assignment on monday i would try my hardest to finish it on that wednesday and then have other like the rest of the week to study and do other things for this organization so i wanted to like prioritize my grades first because i knew like
If you don’t have the grades and like you can’t get into the organization so i think that sometimes people can um get so caught up in the process and then kind of forget about their grades i was going to say as far as actually being in the organization
You definitely have to balance academics with like chapter meetings and events that you’re hosting and we just had our ski week that was a lot of planning and a lot went into that so definitely time management is a big thing knowing how much time to dedicate to
Each task is important that was a shocker for me like how much it takes to balance it all yeah for sure because don’t walk in thinking you’re just gonna stay here and be cute with your little shirt on no like you have chapter meetings you have deadlines you have things to meet
Prep for ski weeks doing the actual like you know events and everything like that it never ends really um even though there is some good down time but you do gotta like figure out if you can do school and do greek because it’s hard to do both at the same time which is
Probably why like most juniors and seniors in college join because the younger you are is kind of hard but if you feel like you’re balanced and we’re mature enough you can do it i’m a procrastinator i’m just be honest so it was rough but it’s still rough
But and i’m in my six other organizations on campus so i just kind of put myself on overload so like you have to really like know your limit because i mean i’m like president of another organization i’m on exec on two other organizations so like this and then that it’s a lot
And then doing your homework like like she said time management and by prioritizing everything big focus i would also say try to um schedule like your course load the semester that you’re trying to join your organization make sure it’s a lighter course load if possible that’ll help out it’s just like a job
Exactly literally it’s a business like like behind all of the parties the strolling and everything it’s a job a lifelong job that we love absolutely how many practices does it take to get the stroll routine down it depends it depends on how dyslexic you are
To have rhythm how fast you catch on to things like most people who visually study can visually because it’s not that hard but some people need some extra time so ah how many practices probably three or four don’t know what’s going to happen so i just have to just be prepared to know
All the strolls and sometimes i’ll mess up and have to restart the song but yes definitely get you a little put a playlist and then plus go to your strobe practices that’s how you get the get to know the strobes exactly and as your ellipses ask your pros about how you do stuff
Because they they can send you a video you can play the video over and over again because yeah but usually about three years yeah it takes me about three times and this is how i know when i really got it is when i could do it to any
Song yeah i’m not even there yet when we go out i don’t stroll y’all like me i don’t i don’t show either i don’t know maybe you’re trying to provide me the show i don’t know i know you and you you trying to stroll everywhere like no no no no no no
I can drive it and i’m like so this one’s for this one because every school will be different but how many credits do you have to have yeah you have to be a sophomore yeah so whatever your sophomore credits as far as credit you have to be a
Full-time student you cannot be a part-time student at our university right and it depends on like when they’re actually doing the process because right it’s not really going to matter if you want to when you want to do it it’s when they want to do it also if your gpa is super important
Please keep it um yeah keep it up because every school is different but the gpa kind of factors into just like you getting i don’t want to say accept it but it just it just really matters you know to keep your grades up and to make sure you’re going to all
Your classes and just keep making sure that like you don’t forget you’re like you’re in school first and then you want to make sure you don’t right the aka is here to help you get through school while also helping within like the networking base and like grow you as an individual
So if your academics ain’t right you can’t do nothing for you or the organization you’re going to go on withdrawal of people yeah babe so that was actually all the questions some of the other questions that you guys asked i can’t necessarily answer so we’re just going to get into
Some things we just feel like you need to know if you want to join a green ground organization or if you just want to be aka the first thing we’re going to talk about is reputation because it matters a lot don’t be starting and popping and blind
Later every platform and talk so if you’re like doing doing what you do on the side and then in someone else’s face like yeah i’m trying to be an aka we’re going to be like no baby we saw that yeah don’t have personality be you but don’t be out of pocket and you
Know what out of pocket is if you wouldn’t do it in front of your mama don’t do it in front of okay you want to do it in front of your professor don’t do it in front of okay but that doesn’t mean go don’t turn up right you know like still be yourself
But even if that means you out partying and you on the side drunk don’t post it like you recording you throwing up in the street and you know you want to be a part of an organization or you’re in a process or whatever don’t post that that’s probably the
Dumbest thing you can do also check your social media and they’re going to ask you for your socials and they’re going to be checking up on that literally be yourself like don’t try to be this saint like that that’s the one you already know how you get down and everything
Don’t be like bible study i’m in love with god we know unless you really are like that if you are like that it’s okay that’s okay right just don’t fake the when looking you don’t need a show you can do that for your your job your nine to fives
This organization wants to see you for you what are you actually going to bring to the table who are you going off of that think about what you can offer to the organization because if you’re just cute that’s not adding to aka like we are cute
Be prepared to work i think that some people underestimate how much work goes into like we were speaking about our school week and there’s different types of planning just understand that like you’re going to do so much more than just throw out a party don’t be a t-shirt where yeah don’t put
That 1908 in your bio for real community service mm-hmm take the pinky at your bio bay okay think about your assets like if you’re good at making flyers if you’re a good speaker if you’re good at makeup sewing social media designs singing a little bit of everything it’s like we
All have like we all bring something different to the table we all get up planning and so we all just have different aspects that could help make our team stronger that was brian’s teacher voice i was just saying like it’s a pwi is different than uh hbcu like our the way
Everything is different so it’s true but that doesn’t make your letters any less value because at the end of the day you still put in the same work we still know the same information we just have a different educational upbringing like you added to
You when i’m at a pwi but when we get together we’re going to turn it up the main thing is like who we’re surrounded by too right we have smaller chapters like at hbcus they have huge chapters yeah when they come out they come out and just came out it’s like somebody girls
We’re a little bit mighty but exactly but don’t get discouraged either because you know it’s all that but there’s still a black community on your predominantly white campus so make sure you’re a part of it exactly that’s another thing there’s some people that like don’t even be a part of the black community
And at the ewi and then want to try to find stuff out like or jump into that right exactly or say they don’t even do that they just they’re a part of it but you can tell they only got in to fit in to get those letters and to just leave
Like you can tell the difference until the ones that want to get to know you people who are genuinely nice and can kick it with everybody and then those people who just wanted to be high and mighty because they got some letters i do want to say to like whenever you do
Don’t let it change you stay humble i know like sometimes people can like think they’re like oh i got my line jacket on i’m this is about like i’m better than people you’re not like i mean i don’t think i don’t want people to think that just because like you get
Something you’re automatically like high-class right because you are who you were before the last yeah like they were the same person yesterday you shouldn’t change who you are once you get them like still stay humble stay you keep your same personality but just like i don’t know i i just think that’s how
Yourself to a higher level yes that’s the right wording you’re hiding yourself to a higher standards now because you do have one letters and like i don’t ever want to put myself in a situation where i look bad and i have my letters on that’s you
