Susan Walsh disappeared on Tuesday July 16 1996. when a person disappears without a trace often the most critical information is hidden in their actions and words the days before they vanished Susan Walsh’s last known whereabouts May hold the clues to what happened to her A single mother writer and stripper Susie was not a victim it’s on the bar dancing she was definitely in control of what was going on loosen Walsh makes a phone call across the street from her home and disappears the fact that Susan didn’t take anything with her there was obviously no planning
In anything Tom without a mother and just picked up on her own and just laughed the mystery that baffles police well over a dozen people were able to pick Susan’s picture and say she was here just hours so as the search for Susan gets underway a striking piece of evidence comes to light
It’s probably in stalker right now drawing her loved ones into a world of danger I was told that you might want to stop asking those questions unless you want to disappear too [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] July 16 1996 it’s a muggy Summers morning in Nutley New Jersey six-year-old Susan Walsh is at home with her 11 year old son David Susan’s son came first in her life he was like the number one priority Susan was a great mother she loved her son so
Much she did anything for him every chance she had she would spend time with her son she financially supported him and it was one of the things she was most proud of despite the rising temperatures outside the apartment around noon to make a phone call she doesn’t have her own telephone at home
She didn’t have money for a phone she was very simple person she [Applause] even like she wasn’t materialistic which I really looked up to her that why because a lot of people are and she really didn’t look at those things as being valuable it was more like love between people and husband Mark’s
Apartment although they are no longer together Susan and Martin live in the same building it’s hard to say when they separated because they didn’t necessarily move away from each other they were for financial reasons they had to stay in the same house Mark lived in the bottom of this house
And she was at the top of it there was a sort of a mutual Arrangement where they could help bring this kid up together it’s an unusual situation but Susan is not your typical single mother tall pale and slender with bleach blonde hair so is a stripper
Hi I’m Susan Walsh and I’m a dancer this is what I do for you when I dance in gentlemen’s clubs Susan had been in and out of this world for time so she had worked at strip clubs she’d spent a little time eating a massage parlor and maybe she had done
Some rest of them she had been in clubs like the aftermath of Plato’s retreat sort of cleaned up clubs well the kind of stripping that Susan and I were doing in New Jersey Go-Go bars it was more a bikini dancing it wasn’t topless we were not allowed to
Touch or be touched and I certainly preferred it that way Susan first began dancing while attending William Patterson College in New Jersey it was there that she also began waiting for the school newspaper the beacon I met Susan Walsh at the offices of the William Patterson College Beacon and one
Number of regional Awards so getting in there was a pretty desirable thing for anybody who was interested in writing or journalism or anything like that somebody called me and said you won’t believe what Susan is doing now and I’m like try me and they’re like she’s dancing at show World Center in Times
Square and I’m like you have got to be kidding dancing is definitely lucrative and a lot of women you know they put themselves through college and and you know have a better Lifestyle by dancing and it’s not necessarily a negative thing there’s a lot of people that have a
Normal life outside of that they just happen to work in a boring dance while dancing pays the bills Susan dreams of working full-time as a writer she gets her start writing for industry trade magazines he was able to get articles in mechanical engineering which were highly technical articles
Susan also attends a graduate program at New York University I’ve been writing about her experiences working as a stripper a writer and you know she had this kind of romantic idea what a writer was opportunity for a kid I’m basically a writer for first and foremost I’ve only dabbled in the sex
Business to finance my graduate school and yeah I found the environment so compelling and intense that I had to write about it the whole time the Susan and Mark were together citizen was the breadwinner worked like the tickets trying to bring home the bacon Very very loving I hate to use this word because it’s worth it all using distributes but she was the Girl Next Door but she really was the girl next door which is a very unusual person on that hot Summer’s Day Susan tells her husband Mark that she needs to call her
Agent who books her jobs in the go go clubs although Mark has a telephone he doesn’t always let Susan use it Mark had the phone in his name so she had to go out and make phone calls that Mark didn’t approve of many of Susan’s family and friends Mark
Has begun to suspect that Susan is using drugs in the past Susan has struggled with addiction though worked hard to overcome it On Christmas Eve in 1984. Susan called me from jail and she said she had been picked up for possession and you were able to put together enough to pay the bill and we got her out of jail and uh I took her home to our house and that was the last
Drink or drugs she had for quite a number of years After a two-month stay in rehab Susan remained sober for over 11 years I know that she had had a previous addiction and I did not see that side of Susan at all I never seen her drank I never seen her smoke a cigarette but she did slap and I became suspicious about it
Worried that Susan might be using drugs again Melissa stage an intervention that morning I was talking with a mutual friend of hers Joey Williams we had both decided that we were going to confront her about everything and tell her that we would be there for her that we would
Help her to get into a rehab and get her life together Melissa tries contacting Susan unable to reach her page is not cell phones so she had a page on and I paged her and she would walk down the street and call me right back you know from the public phone and she didn’t you are Melissa drives to see I noticed that
Door that was usually open was locked shot the windows were locked shot it was 98 degrees out that died and I rang the doorbell nobody answered nobody’s car was there in my stomach I know something had happened to her [Applause] Melissa comes back an hour later to see
If Susan’s returned more kept pulled off and David was with them and they had bags from Staples they went there I guess to get school supplies for David and they basically said that they weren’t there they didn’t see her an hour later Susan’s friend Joey
Arrives to pick her up and take her to work and often hires drivers to take her to the bars where she dances he went at five o’clock when he was supposed to meet her and then he waited for like an hour he called me for the pay phone he says I’m waiting common
Throughout the night and into the next day Melissa keeps paging Susan but never hears back from her finally 24 hours later she receives a phone call from Susan’s husband mark he really didn’t say much he just said I just want you to know that I reported Susan my son to die
Coming up police discover Susan has a history of destructive relationships we uncovered previous reports made with the Nutley Police Department where she alleged that she had been victim of domestic violence Thank you on July 16 1996 Walsh left home to make a phone call and disappeared her friend Melissa had a feeling something was wrong when she wasn’t able to reach Susan her fears were confirmed when Susan’s husband Mark reported her missing to the Nutley Police I knew from
Going to the house that something had happened to her the feeling that I got at her doorstep was terrible Thank you July 17th of 1996 Susan’s ex-husband Mark who else reporter are missing at approximately 12 15 and they have to move the last time Susan was seen was July 16th at around noon detectives immediately started tracing sources of where she had last been seen the Nutley Police traveled to Susan’s
Apartment to interview Mark and their son David about her last known movement the investigation quickly hones in on Susan’s telephone call Susan didn’t have her own phone at the time she used Mark’s phone downstairs in his basement apartment or from before her agents that were trying to get her bookings so there
Were people that changes nicknames for and he had told her that unless she could mention the actual name of the person she was speaking to he’d prefer to use a different phone at the time no records of the calls made at the public phone were available Melissa tells police that if Susan
Didn’t call her agent she may have been trying to buy drugs I heard stories from people that he was a drug dealer and I was a little suspicious because the guy was a little you know Shady unable to determine who Susan called that day police searched both her and Mark’s apartments for Clues
It’s pocketbook in her kitchen along with her wallet pager and other personal items on the very face of it the fact that Susan had left all her most intimate belongings spread out on a kitchen table and said I’ll be right back I’m going out to make a phone call and she just
Didn’t take anything with her there was no obviously no planning in anything suspecting Foul Play his personal life they encounter a tangle of relationships including one with 21 year old Christian Peppo Christian was living with her upstairs because she felt that she could count on him to watch David or to be
There if she needed to go to work because she couldn’t count all the time on David’s father I Believe Christian was asleep at the time she left I think she looked up and told him I’ll be back in a little bit I’m going to make a couple
Phone calls she did it almost on a daily basis she was the same phones just a couple hundred feet from her apartment according to Christian Susan did not say whom she was going to call or did she return by the time he left the apartment had been watching a movie with David and
The movie ended at approximately 12 45 and approximately 1 45 Christian was waiting for a bus in the area to go to New York foreign had several other men in her life some of whom Harvard romantic interest that became abusive we uncovered previous reports made with the Nutley Police
Department where she alleged that she had victim of domestic violence on at least one occasion there were a couple of souls at her apartment where ex-boyfriends had assaulted Christian she was involved with someone recently and she had some problems with him I guess he got a little obsessive with her
And I told her you know let’s go to the police station so we went it was a couple weeks before she disappeared to get a restraining order there had been some restraining orders in effect but we couldn’t find any violation after looking at all those reports we couldn’t leave several witnesses come forward
Claiming to have seen Susan on the day she disappeared including an employee from the pizza parlor across the street from her apartment a pizza man said he saw her going back into her house so she wasn’t going anywhere she was going back into her house friends and family wonder if
The police should be looking closer to home why was her pocketbook and her pager home only laughed all of a sudden disappeared I really feel whatever happened to Susan it happens in that apartment but the Nutley Police can’t find any evidence indicating Foul Play involving Susan’s estranged husband Mark or her
Living boyfriend Christian at the beginning Mark was is it a possible suspect Mark was cooperative we never gather any information to really implicate him in any room doing Christian was also looked at he did come in and cooperate and once the result of what we found out we had no reason to
Believe at the time that he was involved in any wrongdoing a month has passed since but just as the investigation seems to slow the media picks up Susan’s story and the police received startling news number of people that came forward with different a lot of which included she had been
Seen selling herself on the streets of Newark New Jersey foreign [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] Ly vanished off the streets of Nutley New Jersey the complete lack of information regarding her whereabouts doesn’t stop her story from making the news the headlines spur a flurry of sightings one of the nightly police seriously [Applause] One month after Susan goes missing a prostitute in the city of Newark comes forward claiming to have seen her this informant who didn’t wish to be identified stated that she had met Susan on the streets of Newark they had been working the streets of Newark she took her into her apartment
Gave her place to stay the woman says that Susan had been living with her for the past two weeks Lieutenant Ryan believed newspapers that to this day I don’t know how anybody could have known unless indeed she had been with Susan she said she had
Confided in her that she had a son in Nutley she left them behind that her ex-husband was living in the same building and that she didn’t want to go home and that if the police made her go home it’s called kill herself now the Nutley Police feel confident that the account is legitimate
Susan’s loved ones are dubious I think she fabricated that to get attention on her maybe to get money I don’t know not the woman I I went and talked to her I really don’t believe her story the Nutley Police follow through on the lead Susan remains just Out Of Reach
It always seemed like we were just one step behind this girl could never get close enough to either confirm or deny that it was Susan I would say well over a dozen who were able to pick Susan’s picture out of a photo lineup an array of six different
Faces and without a doubt point to this person and say she was here hours ago the potential sightings raise hope that one month after she walked out her front door Susan is still alive though possibly in danger for the number of people we spoke to at that point in
The investigation and appeared that Souza was homeless that she was selling herself on the streets for money to survive for drugs and for food and as she wasn’t doing very well those close decisions admit that in the weeks before her disappearance Susan seemed to be slipping back into addiction I can
Remember a telephone calling out once from Staten Island and she said she was out there and they shouldn’t really have any money at least what are you doing she never talked to me like that before she was always so respectful in such manners and everything
This time I just felt in her voice you know this note of like kind of desperate still Jim finds it impossible to imagine that anything even drums would drive Susan to abandon her son her whole Focus was her certain total that’s all she was always talked about David David’s school which
She could do she would have difficulty having money just to get his lunch she always had to prepare his lunch you know this all she took but police find persuasive evidence of Susan’s desperate state in an interview filmed only two days before she disappeared I go to swings I think we
All do as Memphis of Rage oh I go with my girlfriend to do male bashing and make fun of men and then I’ve cried on stage and then there’s times there’s a good song on it I said just the Escape into the music and sometimes it’s easier and sometimes I feel the pain
The footage is part of a documentary called stripped made by Susan’s friend I found myself in that job and I found the women to be really fascinating and I wondered why they were doing it and I don’t think that people know how smart and interesting and funny and whole
These women are I wanted to humanize them several women feed on camera she speaks candidly about the difficult time she is going through I just recent started drinking and I just lost 11 and a half years of sobriety exclusive dancing I was contacted by the police when I
First went missing I actually handed over that footage as evidence the footage of the women talking and her talking Susan was usually a pretty bubbly and friendly at that time for that interview she just was really drawn and uh fatigued well I’m faced with the problem now where I
Would get a regular job right now because I’m so scared of what it’s done to me and yet I’ve stayed in it so long that my health was so bad that I’d be calling in sick every other day I noticed Susan just seemed a little off
And tell if it was from drugs or from here being overtired or what but I just remembered something wasn’t right police scrutinized the material looking for any clues foreshadowing Susan’s disappearance two days later One Moment in particular grabs their attention Susan had made several reports that she
Felt she was being followed and stalked by males she admitted strip clubs Susan often dated people she had met the strip clubs there were several towards that some of her male friends were very possessive of her there was one guy that I remember she
Told me that I had seen her at a club down the street and he actually came and rang her doorbell and that was two months before she disappeared so but police find no connection between these men and Susan’s disappearance they were often fights between her male friends
And Christian people or an older male friend versus a new male friend however as far as we can investigate those claims nothing showed where Susan would have been in Jeopardy friends and family agree that despite The Unwanted attention Susan sometimes attracted the six-year-old New Jersey native knew how to handle herself Susie
Was not a victim I think that she was totally in control which when he was on the bar dancing troll of those men she knew how to handle them if there was no question but she was a certain amount of turning the tape you’re not going to take me seriously
Despite the fact that I’m intelligent articulate and talented and you’re instead of the arrests or butt or what have you okay fine well guess what here it is you know face your eyes fellas have a look but by the way screw you Suggests that she may have reached her limit dealing with sexuality which really is so intrinsic to your your psyche your soul and the way I feel when I’m dancing is that I’m lying through my emotions this is not me well there’s a saying for dancers that you use it until it starts
To use you I think she was able to use it but it was really penetrating her a lot more because from what I saw some of her writings in her work it was it upsetting to me because I could tell she was really getting hurt and for me when
That point happened I I get out easier said than done I’ve been talking about making big changes in her life she had told Mary that she wanted to start her life no in Florida where her cousins lived she had a job all lines up she felt that she needed a fresh store to get out of dancing and
You know give her and David a better life Nutley Police run with the theory that Susan willingly left on her own without her son Susan had also made comments about how tough it was being a soul care provider for a number of years for David how she was struggling financially and
That she was really getting tired of it not that she didn’t love David but the only pressures of being more or less a single parent but those who know Susan call the idea ridiculous they insisted that she had disappeared on her own and I was totally against that she would
Have not left him without a mother and just picked up on her own and just laughed some Mom at home Susan’s roles as mother and stripper divide the investigation leave on our own accord Foul Play involved coming up a third rule is about to take the search for Susan in a whole new
Direction I think she was putting herself in really bad situations could have been killed Get more disappeared online at investigationdiscovery.com it’s been over a month since Susan Walsh missing missing police are beginning to believe that the 36 year old single mother left on her own accord but her loved ones believe that Susan’s work in the sex industry clouded the investigation I think they
Stereotype town because of the organic or being a prostitute or whatever they to value in her life I spent countless hours and I visited almost every strip club in the state of New Jersey and some in New York looking for Zeus Susan’s double life presents a challenging case to law enforcement where to begin searching for a single mother who is a Stripper by night and
Reporter by day that’s what’s so hard about her case she was involved with so many different things and there was so much going on with her life and had so many different people around her the distractions helped to deter the police from the truth as the investigation continues police
Look into Susan’s writing career including her work with Village Voice staff writer Jim Ridgway I was working on a book about sex Y and I was trying to do it from the point of view of the people in the industry and I had a really hard time
Finding anybody to help me I mean the people I approached you know were very leery they didn’t want to do it for help Jim turns to Al Goldstein editor of screw a popular muckraking magazine about the sex industry I explained to him that I was completely even going
Nuts doing this and he then said well he had knew this young stripper named Susan Walsh who wanted to be a writer and he thought maybe you know that we should meet him I remember her coming to the Village Voice and walking across the street she has his face
It was extremely kind of like innocent and open gym hire season to help him access the world he knows so intimately it’s a big opportunity in Susan Susan’s hard to get Jim whatever he needs she was the most Dependable person hard to find somebody she would go because she never failed ever
Susan’s starting to work with the voice and working with Jim Ridgway was a huge break for her and she it was something she was very determined to make the most out of there was now a journalistic context in which she could take her knowledge and her and her and her experience and write
About it in a really meaningful way on August 2nd 1994 Susan gets her first article published in the Village Voice a collaboration with Jim exposing the dark side of a recent influx of Russians in the local GoGo Club the Russian dancers were these women who had come to answer ads
In the United States some of them were classically trained dancers I mean they were they were told that they could dance you know in New York very serious dancing but of course that wasn’t true infiltrating the clubs where the Russian women dance Susan enjoys the investigative aspect this time about a
Cult of so-called vampires who drink blood stolen from New York City hospitals well are you going to tip from somebody that there was a theft of Blood by vampire so I suggested so she went to a couple places and it was a total of zero you know it’s just
Waste of time although her research doesn’t pan out for the Expose she had planned Susan writes the article and submits it to the voice for publication they wouldn’t run it and she felt really bad and I feel terrible this was at the end of the work and I wasn’t seeing
Susan that much in she was beginning to have problems it’s definitely going down foreign 1996 Jim ridgeway’s book red light is published and Susan is credited as the researcher so it’s the culmination of three years of work Susan feels very proud of her contribution Susan was really super excited because
She was having a you know a book party as a book that she was a big part of and I remember going with her and she was talking to me the whole way there and then we got there and she started dancing and smiling and she just she was just
There was one party at Sally’s Hideaway it was the book people and some of the drag queens and shaves on the Dance Floor she’s trying to like you know show up the drag queen which you don’t do you know drinking where but there was a party
As the night goes on Susan mentions to several people that she is worried about her safety she thought somebody was after her and she dropped a lot of different possibilities she talked about the CIA she talked about the Russian mob which she had written about she talked about
Undercover FBI contacts it was It was kind of crazy Susan’s friends wonder if her paranoia is just a result of being overworked and burnt out I know she was like super stressed out but I’d seen her super stressed out I really thought she was gonna puff out of it
About a week later as you seem to be to be pulling things together a bit I’m going to get a cell phone cell phone you’re not going to give you the stay in touch you know that was the last time I saw her I wasn’t sure with Susan sometimes
If what she was telling me um the truth or if it was something she had conjured up in her mind in retrospect I believe Susan rugs and I think she was putting herself in really bad situations where she has been killed coming up loved ones look for Susan in
Some of the dark Realms she explored I went undercover in the bars that Susan used to work at and asked questions and I was told that you might want to stop asking those questions unless you want to disappear too Foreign stripper and writer Susan Walsh disappeared her double life sends investigators in a myriad of directions the numerous leads seemed to stifle the search for her time passes police narrow their sights on Susan’s writing investigative reporting in the sex industry that may have led to her disappearance there have been several reports that
Souza may have been targeted by different groups due to articles she wrote in the Village Voice and a book she had recently or Susan often approached her work with Augusto that bordered on recklessness Susan seemed to always be seeking adventure and finding the story and it
Was almost like she was living in a movie of her life where she couldn’t really get hurt but she could come in and have all these great experiences and I don’t think she thought of the reality of the danger she’s putting herself in Susan also seemed to blur the line
Between her roles as author and subject in the book red light she was not only the research associate but also a featured sex worker they’re very haunting pictures you know they’re these Burly guys and baseball caps apish and Susan being rather kind of vulnerable at a certain point when you’re doing
That sort of thing if you’re not careful you know you’re not researching anymore you’re there you get very confused in particular Susan’s Village Voice article about Russian dancers being tricked into sex work likely exposed her to some very dangerous people the Russian mafia was a piece of the puzzle that you couldn’t
Really discount because it was a very real thing I did a story for This American Life with Sandy Tolman NPR and I basically went undercover as a dancer one Club I was asking the girls some questions and she was speaking English and the bouncer came over and asked me what I was doing
And I said I I’m thinking about working here I just ask her what it’s like and he totally didn’t believe me it was all Russian Club you know so he started to motion just this other guy when I was wearing a wire so I kind of ran out of there
Um just peeled out of the parking lot police eventually rule out the Russian mafia vampire cult members and all watching another investigative dead end Storm it was my opinion that for whatever reason she had chosen to leave her life behind to this day I still hope that she’s alive however honestly I don’t know what happened to Susie almost a decade after Susan’s disappearance Lieutenant Steve Rogers becomes commander of the Nutley Police Department’s detective Bureau his first
Order of business to reopen the cold missing persons case of My idea was you know sometimes a fresh set of eyes will pick up something that maybe the ultimate advice did not among the boxes of evidence are many personal items that the police gathered from Susan’s apartment including a wall calendar that Lieutenant Rogers pays special attention to so I’m going through January February
March each month she had something logged in pretty much what her appointments were who she was going to see phone calls she made as I’m looking through the calendar I noticed that the month of July was missing now I looked through all of our boxes through all the files on them little
Puzzle over why would July 1996 be missing well that happens to be the month that you considering the level of detail that Susan recorded on the calendar the missing month is extremely suspicious did she take that calendar and rip it out before she left the house and go
Make that phone call did somebody rip that piece of calendar out why not get rid of the entire calendar one thing is for sure in my mind that there may have been something on that calendar that someone did not want us to see Lieutenant Rogers decides to take a
Second look at the apartment where Susan once lived but he hits a wall her estranged husband Mark is now living in the unit with their son David and he is no longer Cooperative I got a call from his attorney we had to stop speaking to him
And why he did that to this day I don’t know because there was a point in time when he was volunteering information every single day without enough evidence to obtain a search warrant Penn and Rogers has no way to re-examine the apartment nevertheless he believes that Mark’s withdrawal from the investigation is far
From an admission of guilt I suppose maybe in Mark’s case based on interviews with people it just didn’t want the attention anymore he just took her wall up and said that’s it Rogers continues to comb through the Case Files eventually making an important find this piece of evidence clearly you could
Have had something to do with a relationship between Susan and somebody else if there was a argument and that argument turned into something tragic and then the person who was involved with her panic in about 30 years as the case is still active Lieutenant Rogers cannot reveal what the new
Discovery is or who it appears to incriminate but other evidence seems to suggest that Susan knew that her life was in danger you know there was a letter that she had written to her son David more saying look if anything happens to me I want you to know that I
Love you so again the question goes back did she know something that we still don’t know was she in fear of her life ones admit that Susan’s inserts were often very complex she knew she’s attractive and she knew how to work being attractive she also would make it a
Point of being kind of not easy to read in terms of direct access to her emotions and I think in a lot of Senses this was just her way of masking a really deep vulnerability and if you told her that you she would not believe you for a minute
Her relationship with her son was of course I think very different and that was real and unconditional it’s pretty sad despite the New Evidence Lieutenant Rogers and the Nutley Police do not have enough information to make an arrest but they maintain that even 15 years the search for Susan Walsh is still active
And never give up you never ever give up you may get a phone call you may get a letter you may get an anonymous tip that the person you’re looking for let’s go in that direction you’ll find him my friends and family find it hard to keep hope alive when they feel Susan’s
Absence so deeply it’s not something that I talk about every day I think I keep that part to myself and I don’t reveal this to just anybody I think when she disappeared it was like a part of me that kind of like disappeared so it’s kind of a weird thing because I
Think she was reaching a point where there was a potential resolution of the two different sides of her life that it was all going to come out in the wash and again that’s one of the only things about her disappearance that’s that makes it so tragic is that it was I
Decided for her my major concern always from the beginning was when I thought Susan’s major concern would be which is that her child was able to grow up and be safe but as time has gone on I feel really horrible all the time I just feel like it was totally um
Just totally awful because she was such a good person if I think about it all the time he’s a popular fraternity brother with a big heart they’re highly talented a natural leader he’s very dedicated when he wanted to do something he did it a lapse in judgment trips him up but he
Soon gets himself back on track he seemed like he was doing really well in school he was keeping up with school work until he heads to campus and never returns it’s as if when that bus pulled away he vanished a cryptic note is his only explanation
Said my family’s given me a lot of opportunities that I just didn’t take advantage of his puzzling Secrets lead detectives and his loved ones baffled we think there’s somebody out there that can help us figure out what’s going on I don’t care why he left where he’s been I
Just want him to come home Thank you [Applause] Tuesday night April 19 2016. 18 year old College sophomore James Martin Roberts who is by Martin meets with friends at a favorite Appalachian State University hangout the Klondike Cafe it was a pretty busy night um pretty usual for Klondike I mean packed that you can still walk around
But it’s pretty hard you’re probably gonna get your feet stuffed on or something Martin and his fraternity brother have come for the klondike’s big draw my group of friends we wanted to go to play trivia and so I texted Martin I was wondering if he was going to be there
According to Martin’s friend Holly he’s true to form that night [Applause] he’s always be the guy that everybody wanted to hang out with I was just so mesmerized by Martin always like had such a huge crush on him that I didn’t even realize anything else is going on The son of parents who are divorced and estranged from each other Martin first enrolled at Appalachian State University in Boone North Carolina almost a year and a half earlier he was really set on going to Appalachian Stadium when that acceptance came in he was really excited about it
Nestled in the foothills of the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains school’s Vibe is unique the laid-back atmosphere I think it suits him his very first semester he’d been invited to pledge a fraternity on campus how Kappa Epsilon known as teak for shoulders he knew the people there already and they
Were invited to the Frat parties and immediately he was selected I know that he’s someone who thrives when he’s around his friends he wanted an opportunity to make friends quickly and that was the best way to do it I think he liked the Brotherhood he had always
Played Sports and had his team and the fraternity was kind of the same thing even as a child in Kernersville North Carolina Martin was a natural athlete playing soccer playing baseball playing football he just he always loves sports as the brown-haired blue-eyed Dynamo got older sold on the soccer field
He liked to compete Pedia pure work and he did it calmly and quietly he could walk off the field and be relaxed comfortable fun loving respectful kind caring he’s got a big heart people look up to him and it made him feel really good about himself in high school he was voted captain of his soccer team
Yet by the time he graduated he was ready for a change Martin was very very focused on something that interested him business finance things of that nature were something that he had said all along he thought he thought Houston academically Martin set his sights on app State’s Business School
He was smart he was very dedicated when he wanted to do something he did it Wednesday night April 20th after Martin was at the Klondike Cafe his father John Roberts who lives two hours away expecting a call from Martin we were making plans for the you know coming
Weeks and for the summer and for next semester we were talking about the classes he was in and the the grades that he had at that time two days earlier Martin told his dad he’d soon have his first paycheck from his new dishwashing job at the Daniel Boone Inn
He was going to call me back Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest and talk about how much money he made but according to Martin’s friends and family his own was his Achilles heel he was just a not a great like texting Communicator phone Communicator I feel like multiple times he always had a
Broken phone he refused to put it in a case ever would not put it in a case so by the next day Martin’s father still hasn’t heard from his son he tries reaching him yet again luck he seemed a little bit strange since he was so definite That same morning Martin is actually at his apartment getting ready to start his day he chats with his roommates over breakfast they all said that they saw him in passing on Thursday Martin tells them he’s heading to the library water bottle and he put it in his backpack and he and he left
Probably about 10 30 that morning around lunchtime Martin’s cousin who also attends App State runs into him on campus it was a complete chance meeting she had forgotten something for her class the two have barely seen each other this semester they walked together to the nearby Apple
CART bus stop the free bus service students and Boone residents use to get around town they had a conversation for 10 or 15 minutes and upbeat Martin tells her about his plans for next semester and that he’s on his way to his fraternity house now When the bus comes gets on and the cousins go their separate ways he started walking down the street and she didn’t think anything of it this brief casual meeting will soon take on far greater significance than the cousin ever imagined it really was some kind of coincidence if you believe in
That kind of thing that they happened to meet up at that time at that place and it would be the last time that we’ve seen or heard from him At four o’clock that afternoon two of Martin’s close friends and frat brothers stopped by his apartment to see him Martin hey Martin menu okay the day before he abruptly dropped out of their fraternity chat group he was a freshman pledged class leader of that group for those people reached out to Martin
Wanted to know why but Martin’s not in his room and he’s no longer responding to the texts from his friends by Friday morning Martin’s father is increasingly worried about his son it’s been landlord for the apartment comp be time today this morning The apartment manager started calling the roommates and saying hey can you go in his room see if he’s there Martin’s roommate knocks on his closed door Martin [Applause] and I didn’t know if he was in the room or going Martin’s not inside but on his desk there’s a note
Reading it his roommate immediately realizes something is very wrong [Applause] Friday morning April 22nd 2016 a roommate of college sophomore Martin Roberts has made an alarming Discovery in his room the roommate called me read me the note over the telephone and I knew I had to get up there ASAP just dropped everything at work got home
As quick as I could got my wife Abby and we headed to Boone as fast as we could get there the roommate’s second call is to the Boone police department they contacted the police and said we need to report this young man missing United States when detective Kevin Wilson arrives at the apartment he reads Martin’s letter the note is so personal Martin’s parents have made only parts of it public but was the note that Martin left stating that he was leaving so I think it said to the folks that I won’t see and
He said my family’s given me a lot of opportunities that I just didn’t take advantage of he was disappointed at himself I think he felt like a failure it’s really sad it didn’t really say where he was going it doesn’t say this is a suicide note
And I’m gonna hurt myself nor does it say this is not a suicide note and I’m gonna go away when I saw it I thought this is not gonna be good it’s gonna be a difficult case Martin has also left important possessions behind his laptop his iPad he his phone and his wallet
I think he could be seen as the ultimate withdrawal Boone police reach Martin’s house and let her know what was going on I left work went and got her and we went to Boone all the way up there I kept thinking he’s went off with a couple of
His friends and forgot to tell somebody he’s gonna turn up according to Martin’s father and stepmother the 19 year old had expressed disappointment in himself before eight months earlier after a great freshman year Martin had just returned to Appalachian State as a sophomore his very first night back he ran into
Trouble he went up for the sole purpose of attending this fraternity party he was a social drinker so I don’t think he was a visitive way he drank with his friends who unfortunately drank a lot made the decision to drive after he had Martin pulled right out in front of App
State campus police they stopped him and then that evolved into a driving while impaired citation Martin was taken into custody that night I get a call from him maybe and he tells me I need to come pick him up hello because he’s in jail and he got a DWI
Martin’s girlfriend Kayla lived almost 100 miles away from upstate I don’t know why he didn’t pick somebody closer I think that calling experience was definitely out of the question at that point I was nervous and scared and didn’t want to disappoint them it says she drove two hours to Boone
That night to help Martin when I arrived he was out as soon as I got there he threw money at me oh really the gas money he’s like I’m sorry you came all the way up here for nothing exhausted and emotional Kayla says they wound up fighting
I can’t do this I deserve a little bit better um someone who doesn’t just consider himself in decisions that he makes Kayla that night Martin lost his driver’s license and his girlfriend 24 hours passed before Martin got up the courage to call his father and stepmother
That’s what he told us he had got a DUI and said he needed to come home that the situation he was in was not good for him and he needed some time away for it that same day they brought him back home to Kernersville North Carolina
We first thought maybe he was just going to come home for the weekend uh or maybe even be okay I think I want to take a semester I’d like to get away from the fraternity life Martin now officially withdrew from App State while home a friend of his family heard he was
Looking for work but I said well let me open up my store that semester so he’s going to be one of my first Hunters according to regular Martin thrived at his new job in the restaurant much like he had playing soccer so he’s a rare kid
You see a kid that young that mature uh be able to handle business the consistency that he showed on the field is exactly what he showed when he started working for me Martin even put his business education to work to boost the restaurant’s bottom line the job helped repair his bruised
Self-esteem Martin did you know exaggerate some but he said that rich wanted to grab him for management after Martin took a full semester off he returned to college in January of 2016. he was ready to get not to be living with us again but according to his father Martin wanted to handle his
Education differently this time they was not living on campus in a dorm like he did his first year he was living in an apartment with three other fraternity Brothers he seemed like he was doing real well in school he was keeping up with school work I think he
Was glad to be back uh With Friends but we didn’t talk as much Now just four months later Martin’s family and friends have been blindsided by his sudden disappearance during the two-hour Drive his father calls Martin’s cousin who’s on the App State campus she was the one that said we ran into each other yesterday as a matter of fact at Martin’s father’s request she rushes
To Martin’s apartment while talking with his roommates inconsistencies emerge they thought Martin was headed to the library Thursday morning which isn’t where his cousin ran into him Martin told her he was headed to the house where [Applause] his house would be right up here but police find no evidence Martin
Arrived there were people that were at the house that day around that time and I said he didn’t come by today we didn’t see him at all trying to determine where Martin went detective Wilson contacts the city’s Apple card bus service there is video on the apple cart transit buses we
Were actually able after several hours to find him on video walking away from [Applause] April 23rd 2016. college student Martin Roberts was reported missing 15 hours earlier by his roommates his cousin was the last person to see him as they parted at a campus bus stop now police have just spotted him on video taken by bus security cameras it’s kind of grainy but it’s clear enough to
Tell that it’s Martin the front camera clearly shows him starting to walk away the side camera you can see him through the glass and then the back camera catches him as he’s walking away Martin’s on foot and heading toward a busy intersection he’s right on the edge of Campus so the
Detective is hoping the video will reveal which direction he takes he’s on that video that last framed for approximately 17 seconds and he’s right at a street corner he looks One Direction and looks the other direction and then they don’t see him anymore as if when that bus pulled away he vanished Hoping for leads on which way Martin headed Boone police tried to access his phone but without his passcode it sealed tight as it rung but the unique thing to Apple products is if you haven’t opened your emails or phone calls or text messages they’ll actually are visible on that phone
A lot of mistakes and missed phone calls investigators follow up on every missed call and text as a result the news quickly spreads that Martin can’t be found it was just like the worst feeling you could ever have your heart just drops police begin scrutinizing Martin’s interactions before he went missing Thursday
Trying to understand his frame of mind A fraternity brother tells police 48 hours before Martin disappeared driven him to get a haircut [Applause] they actually took him to the bank because he had to go to the bank to withdraw cash money when Martin returned according to his roommates he’d also bought groceries he had a small refrigerator in his
Bedroom and when we were there we could have taken the food with him when he left Martin’s high school girlfriend Kayla tells police that in her case she’d grown concerned about Martin three days earlier when he withdrew from a high school chat group she sent him a text saying what are you doing you don’t want to talk to me anymore in particular she
Didn’t know that that very night Martin also withdrew from his fraternity chat group and then he started saying things that made me question if he was okay there was things like no one can help me at this point there Today Martin went missing it’s unbelievably alarming but you know we don’t know we don’t know what’s going to happen until until it happens then are told about a possible sighting of Martin just an hour and a half after he left his cousin at the bus stop we had a young lady come forward
Who stated that she had seen him walking in an area not too far from town she knew who Martin was I think she described yet like an unusual or a particular gate that’s that she hey I know that’s Martin Roberts the exact location Flannery Fork Road between Winkler’s Creek and Payne Branch roads From there it’s possible Martin may have been headed to a nearby Recreation Area called Trout Lake it is a well visited area by college students it’s easy to get to and there’s water there there’s walking trails you can hike in the mountains there police learned that Martin has been to trial Lake before
Perhaps he’d pack some food for a hike and something happened to him here in the densely forested foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains thank you the day after Martin was reported missing North Carolina State Highway Patrol provides a specially equipped helicopter a nighttime search for Martin in the area of the sighting
What’s called a Ford look your walk in in an area or if there’s an animal in the area they give off a lot more heat in this round the surrounding ground if Martin’s somewhere in the woods the sensors would see him plain as day but the infrared surge yields nothing
As investigators piece together details about Martin from his friends and family a pattern begins to emerge they discover he’d been selectively revealing or hiding details about himself for months before he went missing after coming back to college his friends started to notice that they were sometimes would say I was with my cousin
Well but we talked to his cousin he only has one cousin in Boone and she says I haven’t seen him we don’t hang out together Martin also had something much bigger from his roommates and his mother and sister that he wasn’t even attending Appalachian State this semester
We thought he was Rock enrolled in Appalachian he was now enrolled in our local Community College he wanted to take classes online I think it’s four or five classes at the community college investigators get Martin’s academic records from the community college there’s another Revelation he was doing fine he wasn’t failing
Anything but he just decided to stop going it had been nearly a month since Martin had logged on to any online courses he was you know telling me about his grades and his classes and extra credit and things like that and he had quit going that’s not all Martin had been hiding we
Called the places that he was telling his family members he worked at and they said we have applications I was actually able to find applications to all the places he’s talking about but he never got at the time I thought man he is he’s working himself to death you know now I
Know different but he don’t wish I’d have known then but we didn’t know he was being mysterious or untruthful or hiding something from from just about everybody Martin’s mother and sister said even lied to them about his DWI told them he’s been ticketed while walking home
He said that he was stopped by the police and for drunk and disorderly I said well you know um Lauren your lesson please driving but Martin was behind the wheel that night I was shocked I always thought we had the relationship that he could just talk to me about anything
It just seems like he was trying his best to give out this picture to people that everything’s okay I’m doing fine when in actuality he wasn’t doing fine at all 19 year old Martin Roberts has been missing from Boone North Carolina for five days in that time police have uncovered a trail of disengaging from his networks and his friends and and being so deceptive about things was very unusual unusual it’s not how he was everything that happened
Was pointing to his he was actually miserable and it wasn’t work tired it wasn’t School tired burnt out whatever he was just miserable or depressed or something Martin’s cryptic note now makes more sense to investigators they think yelling people what he imagined they wanted to hear about him
It seems to me that Martin was very much trying to keep up Assad that everyone was going great for him in his note he alluded to being tired of that of tired his life not living up to expectations But police have no idea what Martin’s intentions were they look for clues in his possessions starting with his wallet as a result of his Martin no longer had a valid driver’s license take your driver’s license away from you physically his father says Martin did get a state issued ID card foreign
His original ID was not in that room well yes it was somewhere else or on his person Martin didn’t take his bank card with him his parents had said you know he’s going to have a certain debit card and this is this is what bank gets through please check Martin’s banking history there were no large withdrawals or suspicious purchases before he went missing there’s been no more activity and still
Hasn’t been any activity at all this time Boone police also finds something unexpected Martin left behind some anti-depressant pills that Martin was not prescribed there were quite a few of them I don’t know of any time that he has been treated for it’s not something that we see being
Bought and sold between students here police are never able to determine how Martin got the antidepressants why he had them in the first place five days after he went missing two more possible sightings of Martin are reported to police one near Trout Lake the other Winkler’s Creek Road bolstering the likelihood of
The original sighting hour and a half after he’d left the bus stop in that same general area around the same time frame and so for us that seem to haters check other modes of transportation Martin could have used to go in actions the best we can tell
He didn’t take a bus he didn’t take a cab he didn’t take you know one of these app-based companies unless Martin hitched a ride this leads police back to square one the theory he was traveling on foot he definitely had the ability to hike and he was very active
Had a lot of endurance and could do anything that he put his mind to but those who know Martin best question if he’d ever attempt anything more ambitious than a day his uh go outside and sweat for five minutes come inside and take a shower type person
They just didn’t have a lot of experience I hadn’t been camping five times in his life In the bus security video Martin certainly wasn’t dressed for a long journey so tennis shoes and Instigators consider the possibility Martin might have wandered into the hundreds of miles of wilderness surrounding bone perhaps attempting to connect to the nearby Appalachian Trail we received a couple things that hey there was a kid out here definitely didn’t belong out here but Daniel wasn’t him something completely different Martin’s Family suggests another
Possible destination we’ve always been a beach family we’ve always gone at least once if not two or three times a season to the beach a family favorite is Ocean Isle Beach North Carolina 280 miles from Boone it’s just outside Myrtle Beach it’s yeah definitely a beach kind of person
If so Martin’s two distinctive tattoos might stand out there on his left forearm he’s got an homage to Appalachian State it’s kind of a blended view of mountains which is definitely reflective of Boom on his right rib cage Martin has a tattoo of a lyric from Bob Marley’s song
Zion train don’t gain the world and lose your soul wisdom is better than silver or gold over the next two months sightings of young men matching Martin’s description along Coastal North and South Carolina but after investigation none turn out to be him [Applause] into their investigation Boone police
Have followed numerous leads trying to lose at these time periods where we don’t know where Martin was police find no answers in Martin’s digital footprint extracted from his laptop I would say I went through 12 000 emails she read them and tried to figure out what what’s he doing As an investigative Hail Mary Boone’s chief of police appeals to the community for anything they may know about Martin when he was off the radar it’s almost an open letter to the public hey if you’ve got information about this good or bad or whatever it’s the chief’s office line
Call me the appeal elicits no responses I’ve been doing this job 20 plus years and I’ve never had any case where you put a fraction of this amount of work into it and you get nothing back then after four months worth of dead ends detective Wilson receives an unexpected
Call from a coroner 350 miles away in Indiana who’s investigating some unidentified human remains found from what I understood the lower portion of a leg the foot but it was in a shoe not just any shoe a gray New Balance sneaker the same kind of sneaker Martin was wearing when he went missing
Corner so that you guys are the first thing that popped up so I just called you would there be a reason he came here [Applause] 19 year old Martin Roberts has been missing for four months coroner in Indiana has recovered human remains that potentially could be his Boone’s detective Wilson quickly discovers the sneaker found in Indiana is a size and a half larger than what Martin wears yet there’s only one definitive way to know if it’s Martins We had actually done parental DNA testing I’ve gone in many father and birth mother to do DNA samples the coroner said we’re gonna send our stuff off and obviously if there’s a match you guys are going to get that thank you neither one of them ended up being a match In June of 2016 Boone police invested another potentially hard stuff we’re looking you know we’re looking for that with three reported sightings of Martin near Trout Lake immediately after he went missing police focus on that area and specifically in the water are those bodies of water you know it’s
Not uncommon for folks to use those as a main mechanism to commit suicide or to harm themselves extensive water searches are conducted of both trout lake and the nearby Boone Reservoir the North Carolina State Bureau Investigation they have a few dog teams of hrd dogs human remains detection most
Folks know them as cadaver dogs the dogs are trained on the odor of human decomposition the gases are actually lighter than the water so they’re going to rise to the surface and so what we’re looking for when we’re doing the searches of the water is for the dogs to do exactly the
Same thing as they do on the ground is to alert us when they smell those gases their searches also sonar technology and divers scan the bottoms of the lake and Reservoir afterward the dogs scour the land surrounding both bodies of water the searches yield nothing there was nothing no change of behavior
On the days that we searched for Martin in the water areas no animation maybe see any indication that there was anything foreign [Applause] police Circle back to try to understand Martin’s Behavior and why he’d been silently struggling with before he went missing I did a search warrant to the college
Because they have a Counseling Center that offers free counseling to the students laws protecting patient confidentiality make mental health records difficult to access even for law enforcement did he have some type of mental illness happening did you have an addiction was he having problems with his sexuality or you know
Some type of identity issue or or or or whatever we never saw any signs or never been any discussion or communication that he was having any issues with uh sexuality or gender identity and we’ve always told him if you have any problem you can tell us about it in
Our interviews with his friends which are our greatest source of information nobody can give us any information about any of that being a problem but Martin’s friends tell police they had no had no marked change in him when he returned to school in January of 2016.
He was less about always having fun and going into wings with them there’d be times where he wanted to be alone I would have never known that he was struggling with anything he did it well at upstate months pass and Boone police explore a host of theories for other places Martin
Could have gone they also enlist outside help to scrutinize his case we brought in experts in the field hand him the case File and see in two days and just let them just go through it with fresh eyes and try to point out anything that we didn’t do well
Or didn’t do it all or anything that they can come up with Martin’s Family holds tight to the hope that investigators can find him they’re offering a reward for up to ten thousand dollars for information on Martin there’s somebody out there that knows something that can help us figure out what’s going on
Martin’s father and stepmother called help find Martin Roberts cherished missing also to try to communicate directly with Martin how much we love him and we miss him and we want him back we just want to know you’re okay nearly two years have passed Patty Martin disappeared leaving behind troubling questions
Uh to have no clue what it was impacting him I just feel so bad I didn’t see it the one thing that we know for sure is we don’t know anything for sure but somebody does in August of 2017 Martin would have turned 21. for his family pain of his absence is excruciating
The plan had always been that Martin was going to walk me down the aisle after I got engaged I asked him he said yeah the day that I went and picked out my wedding dress he said I can’t wait for the wedding says but after Martin disappeared
She had to decide if she would proceed And he wasn’t there we want to get him back home and be a part of the family again I don’t care why he left where he’s been I just want him to become if you have any information about James Martin Roberts or his disappearance contact the Boone police dogs 8 6 900.
Or High Country Crime Stoppers at 828-268-6959 Stephanie is an independent bubbly nine-year-old who prefers cowboy boots to dresses we’d rather be out playing in the dirt with the trucks with the boys then one night she goes bowling with friends and never returns I remember him watching all of us kids I realized that
Man that I saw could have been something more than just an unusual person the nine-year-old girl if she’d have ran away from home she’d be at Grandma’s house it’s not here it’s a story that alters a small City forever October 11th we’re always bringing back memories of Stephanie she will never be forgotten
Not for many of us and left loved ones to face Decades of enduring pain timing my third child Stephanie after my best friend she’s still a part of my family she always will be [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] October 11 1993 Challis Idaho a rural city of just a thousand people tucked between two the closest town is an hour away tell us is very small it’s very remote so everybody knows everybody everybody watches out for everybody and everybody cares for everybody around 3 P.M nine-year-old Stephanie
Craig finishes school and goes with her friends to the bowling alley just across the road we all walk to the Chalice Lanes bowling alley to do our elementary bowling league wiggle three games a lot of the times we all ordered food and ate together Stephanie liked to be involved so I know
She played soccer and bowling Stephanie is definitely not a girl’s girl she ran around with Dad all the time went fishing hunting Rock picking very outdoorsy Foreign we would rather be out playing in the dirt with the trucks with the boys than in playing with dolls and doing our hair now he has always made friends easily with boys as well as girls she seemed to be all week bouncing around laughing
And she had this huge huge smile and she was just funny very outgoing she didn’t have enemies she didn’t dislike anybody she liked everybody she was fun to be around Stephanie’s father Ben works in the local mineral mines and also does taxidermy her mother Sandy is a homemaker they have three younger daughters ages two four and six Stephanie was closer to her father than she was her mother because there was the younger babies coming along and I think
Sandy was busy with them her friends say that Stephanie has a unique relationship with her father he was always joking with each other playing around just happy you know loving [Applause] And Stephanie the first grandchild of the family is especially close to her grandmother Hazel they would come over and spend time with me because I was out working in the garden or the yard and she liked to be out she spent a lot of time Stephanie happily assumes the role of big sister
To her three younger siblings she was always taking care of them always making sure they had whatever they needed I remember her back and her little sister around it was like she was our she was kind of our life though and the nine-year-old loves the freedom
She has to walk her bike anywhere in chalice we all rode bikes all over chalice and we rode everywhere in Dallas you know the whole County it’s the rare kind of town where people don’t lock their doors children freely ride bicycles walk by themselves side on a company
Parents were there A lot of times to pick us up you know some were Stephanie always walked home from the bowling alley like she walked home from school at 4 45 pm on October 11th Stephanie and her classmates are wrapping up their games for their after-school bowling league
The teammate’s mother Luanne Berry is there serving his scorekeeper for the kids the girls team which was Stephanie and her two friends were actually bowling and when they finished the parents came and got them or they left and we were the only ones left finishing bowling [Applause]
On her way out Luanne sees Stephanie standing in the bowling alley parking lot I asked Stephanie are you going home and she lived just across the creek from the bowling alley and she said yes she was going home and so I got in my car
And as I backed out I looked in my rearview mirror and I see Stephanie and there was a Footbridge that went across Grandma’s house Hazel’s as they’re pulling out of the parking lot Brandi Bennetts and her mother also see Stephanie outside the bowling alley he’s waiting to cross Highway 93 headed
Back towards the school I know my mom waiting for her to cross so my mom kind of stopped and just said ask Stephanie if she needs a ride while she headed back to school hey staff where you going you want a ride home no I forgot my backpack she said up on
The soccer field the school is a five minute walk away and then it’s 10 minutes back to Stephanie’s home she’s supposed to be there by 5 PM her grandmother Hazel lives right next door at five o’clock passes with no sign of Stephanie Sandy Stephanie’s mother called me about
5 15 and she said is stiffy over to your house and I said no no she’s not but I said just a minute maybe she’s out playing with the boys I went out and checked with voice and no they hadn’t seen Stephanie Stephanie’s mother and grandmother immediately start to search for her and
I got in the car and I went driving around [ __ ] and when it started getting dark I knew she had to be someplace because she wouldn’t be out playing around when it got dark her family says anyone who knows Stephanie is aware that the one thing that always terrified her was the dark
She was always asking can I stay the night with you and I’d say yes as soon as it started getting dusk do you want to go home very few nights with us even when Stephanie was in her own home at night it couldn’t be dark in her bedroom
We stayed the neither house one night and uh we didn’t shut the lights off in our little bedroom I couldn’t figure out why and she didn’t say it her family wonders if Stephanie went home with a friend for a sleepover maybe to escape the commotion at her house
With three younger siblings we decided that the best chance was that she went home with a friend I started calling those people to see you know if maybe she went home with somebody but Hazel’s phone calls and a drive around town with Sandy turn up nothing by 8pm there’s still no news about
Stephanie and her mother Sandy becomes extremely concerned [Applause] Stephanie’s mother came into the sheriff’s office at about I believe it was quarter after eight in the evening to report that she could not find her nine-year-old daughter Stephanie then sent the one Deputy who was in the
Office with me to check the creek behind the bowling alley to see if she had fallen in it appears that Stephanie isn’t at the creek though it’s difficult to know for certain in the dark Custer County search and rescue as well as the fire department townspeople also joined the hunt for Stephanie
So it’s probably about 50 of us at the time and we all walked where we were supposed to walk and they came back met at bowling alley and they wanted us to extend the search into town knowing that time is of the essence search teams use every means available they use the
Sheriff’s Office pickups in the search horses four-wheelers they search on foot Custer County surgeon rescu they look to search from here to Salmon on the Salmon River but the teams find no sign of Stephanie we were supposed to report back to the Sheriff’s office at midnight and we did
And the sheriff said that they were calling off the search with her close friend now inexplicably missing Brandi Bennett is haunted by her last image of Stephanie I waved to her when she was on the sidewalk headed back up to the elementary school and I waved
Goodbye to her and told her I would see her tomorrow at school Nine-year-old Stephanie crane didn’t come home after leaving Bowling practice in her hometown of Challis Idaho he’s been missing for 14 hours the last people to see Stephanie remember her saying she was heading back to school to get her backpack and then home we’re travels fast around chalice Stephanie is missing
The next morning her friend Brandy’s mother shares the upsetting news she’s like well they they can’t find Stephanie nobody nobody since yesterday at the bowling alley I didn’t know what to think Stephanie’s parents and other loved ones are stunned by our disappearance I found out the next morning that Stephanie had not
Returned and that’s when the questions just stormed in on me her grandmother was asking Stephanie with you you know did she go somewhere else In the daylight local sheriff’s deputies fire department search and rescue and over 100 volunteers expand the hunt state and federal law enforcement also arrive in chalice to lend a hand a photo of Stephanie and a description of what she was wearing is faxed out to Idaho State Police and all the county
Law enforcement agencies across the state we fine-toothed more of the area where we had walked the previous night bushes and backyards are you exciting near the school gets investigators attention a vehicle that residents don’t recognize is parked at the high school a couple hundred yards from Stephanie’s school we
Received numerous reports of a yellow pickup around the school people just thought it was suspicious in a town the size of chalice residents say they often recognize each other’s vehicles wasn’t linked to Alice parent when police go looking for the truck they hit a snag the truck that was
Spotted at the school was not there when the deputies arrived and nobody could provide a license plate well please try to locate the truck local chalice residents mobilize to spread the word about Stephanie’s disappearance [Applause] people formed what they called friends of Stephanie and they took Flyers of
Stephanie and they stuffed them in envelopes to send mail them out Nationwide we sent Flyers all over the United States we would take 10 15 20 Flyers you know notice with her picture on it and people would post them all over in where they lived in their Town an Idaho State
Police search dog is brought in to retrace Stephanie’s possible he was by the bowling alley and going up to the high school and going down to Hazel’s and where Stephanie lived the dog picks up Stephanie’s scent but then loses it just guards from the bowling alley in the midst of the search efforts
Stephanie’s friends and classmates say they try to resume their normal lives but nothing is as it was before she sat off to the left of me everyone went back to school that we were allowed to go to our desks but we weren’t allowed to touch Stephanie’s desk they
Kind of had some stuff around it and it was meant to stay as it was I’m sitting in class and Stephanie’s not there and when a kid and when one of us was sick everybody knew why we were sick or what we were doing so it was really abnormal
Four days after Stephanie went missing instigators interview the children who were with her the night she disappeared and several of them say they noticed something that concerned them I saw a suspicious person that I’ve never seen before in my life and he looked creepy according to the kids The Stranger
Seemed to be fixated on their bowling game I remember him watching all of us kids and I realized that man that I saw could have been something more than just an unusual person [Applause] jumping on the new lead agents ask Stephanie’s friend Chase for more identifying details that’s when I
Started to explain everything to him that I could possibly think of a sketch artist to help reconstruct the suspicious man’s face they would say did he have a round face did he have a oval face and you know he had a skinny face highest cheekbones were and they would
Show me how they would draw them once I said yeah that looks a lot like him they printed it off and they put it up for a wanted person investigators circulate the sketches Statewide but don’t get any hits they also speak with the owner of the bowling alley
Over the next 10 days no further information comes in to explain what could have happened to Stephanie even a fifty thousand dollar reward half raised by townspeople half from an anonymous donor produces no results Stephanie’s family continues to cope with the pain and infusion of her sudden disappearance [Applause] here on it and
At first you know probably the first week I didn’t sleep at all and now why did I think that if I stayed awake something bad couldn’t happen to her according to Friends Stephanie’s parents are heartbroken but trying to hold out some hope her father Ben becomes more reserved
I remember him being more quiet not I was talkative seeing one of their own vanish Into Thin Air people of chalice are now living in fear These small communities you think you’re safe and then you get that Whiplash of nothing safe anymore We were terrified all this parents children we became very even more closed in than we are more protective residents say the Carefree days of children walking anywhere in chalice by themselves are over Tad was only in third grade and so I would deliver him to school in the
Morning by walking him to his classroom I would pick him up from his classroom I wouldn’t even trust anybody to walk into the school bus and when I would get there there would be 10 15 20 other parents picking their children up from the classroom Law enforcement continues canvassing door-to-door trying to determine if anyone saw anything suspicious the night Stephanie vanished including seeing strangers in town the mysterious pickup truck parked at the high school is still unidentified the investigator’s task is Complicated by the fact that Stephanie disappeared all month long hunters from other towns
And States drive through Challis on Highway 93 the main road in and out of town that Stephanie was seen waiting to cross Hunters come from the cities from the south you know Idaho Falls and Pocatello and it was very crowded investigators have to contend with a frightening worst case scenario
A transient Hunter could have come through town and quickly grabbed Stephanie from the side of the highway on October 15th four days after Stephanie went missing a tip comes in suggesting just that possibility on the night she vanished another unknown vehicle was seen in town a blue van
Parked on the shoulder of Highway 93 about a half mile from the bowling alley then just 45 minutes later there’s another sighting of a blue van 30 miles south of Dallas one of the reports because County Sheriff’s Office received from the clerk at the convenience store fighting [Applause] Four days after nine-year-old Stephanie crane disappeared authorities get a promising lead about a blue van that was seen in Challis Idaho with two men fighting nearby deputies try to find the blue van where it was last seen on Highway 75 southeast of Challis but by the time the officers
Got there the van was gone as far as Custer County sheriff’s deputies can tell The Blue Van is no longer in the Chalice area they discover that like the earlier sighting of the pickup truck no one wrote down the van’s license plate or its make or model and
There was no security video recorded over the next three months no further information comes into law enforcement composite sketch of the man in the bowling alley is still leading nowhere On September 27 1994 just a day before what would have been Stephanie’s 10th birthday the residents of chalice decide to Market with a symbolic gesture purple was her favorite color in remembrance of Stephanie the family and other townspeople have released purple bullets please Already reeling from the loss of Stephanie her family goes through even more upheaval in the years that follow in 1995 a year and a half after Stephanie vanished her parents Sandy and Ben decide to end their marriage they ended up spreading up which I don’t think is
An visuals I think in tried to forget it or go on I think Sandy had a harder time In May 1995 Hazel’s daughter-in-law Sandy moves to Reno Nevada and suffers health issues I don’t think your life was good she ended up passing away from blood clots in her lungs Stephanie’s father Ben stays in chalice and raises their three daughters on his own according to her grandmother the crane
Family agonizes over the loss of Stephanie every day Hazel says her husband Earl Stephanie’s grandfather becomes angry and frustrated at the complete lack of any answers in his granddaughter’s disappearance he was mad he was mad at whoever took her he was mad at the legal system because they
Didn’t find her he was mad at himself because he couldn’t solve it figure it out Hazel says she tries her best to continue some semblance of a normal life but it’s extremely difficult I don’t things you have to do at one point we had some friends down
For dinner on Friday evening and and everyone was laughing and joking around I had a meltdown I went outside got in the RV and sit down balls and cried Stephanie’s family members say they feel that authorities have not kept them apprised of developments in the investigation in 1995 Idaho’s attorney general visits
The cranes in an attempt to address their concerns but the official message he brings them isn’t a welcome one one of the things that we complained about was the fact that we didn’t know we weren’t being kept in the loop and the state’s attorney general said you know according
To our office there’s no proof there was a crime committed here I said you think she just vaporized we said yes there was a crime committed they said well maybe she ran away and I said no she didn’t run away she was a nine-year-old girl if she’d have ran
Away from home she’d be at Grandma’s house and he’s not here the case goes cold for another year in early 1990 a huge lead they have a hunter named Keith hassock in custody for unlawful possession of Wildlife inspectors have found a cash pornography among his belongings appearing to depict underage females
What’s more they believe that Hathcock was in the Chalice area four years earlier when Stephanie disappeared we knew that Mr hesscock was here on October 11th because he had shot a Bighorn Shape Up Morgan Creek in Custer County investigators also learned that hescock used to drive a pickup truck that was
Similar to The Mysterious yellow ones spotted at the high school after Stephanie disappeared he drove a little yellow pickup but we didn’t really have enough there wasn’t enough evidence to follow that but four years later police are unable to locate the yellow truck despite the discovery of the pornography and a possible link
To the Trump a search of hashcock’s residence turns up no evidence of Stephanie in the end deputies can’t connect him to her disappearance no new tips come into Custer County once again the case grows Stone Cold and there are more changes in the crane family’s life in 1998 five years after Stephanie
Disappeared her father Ben moves the whole family to Orcas Island Washington about 800 miles from Idaho Stephanie’s grandparents Hazel and Earl remain in chalice still hoping that she may someday come home I could see somebody maybe picking her up and telling her her mom and dad
Sold her or didn’t want her I think even a nine-year-old even though she’s older I think you could convince her of that over time and maybe that’s just because I want to think that two more years pass with no further developments in the investigation And then in May 2000 almost seven years after Stephanie vanished there’s a stunning new lead from Nampa Idaho 200 miles east of chalice Sergeant miles received information an invade in our Detention Facility had information on Stephanie crane disappearance so Miles interviewed this inmate the inmate tells detectives that a female friend of his
Had rented a room in a man’s apartment back in 1993 the Stephanie with [Applause] missing sir she told him that neighbors heard disturbing sounds from a street level window they had heard a girl crying and screaming basement nobody was ever allowed down there [Applause] In the seven years since nine-year-old Stephanie crane vanished law enforcement has had few productive leads by the year 2000 the crane case has become notorious throughout the state of Idaho when I say I’ve grown up in chalice you see if it wasn’t there a girl abducted from your town there was
It’s just a nationally known thing then in April of 2000 gold case suddenly County Sheriff’s Office 200 miles east of chalice steadily crane cases was considered a big case anytime you have a little girl that goes missing it says it’s important to do everything you can
On it in our department did a lot of a lot of work and a lot of follow-up on this information over the course of several months the tip comes from a Canyon County Prison inmate who tells officials about a woman who claims to know the man responsible for Stephanie’s disappearance
Detectives bring the woman in for questioning tells them that seven years earlier in 1993 she roomed with a man who had drifted between Idaho and Oregon when she lived with him in Nampa Idaho she found his behavior extremely suspicious that’s what we learned about this basement and there was no nobody
Allowed down there he wouldn’t let anybody down there and people heard a girl crying down there the roommate says neighbors believed someone was being held captive she says she asked The Drifter why he always kept the basement locked and his answer was troubling he said that it was his daughter
Was being punished for running away or something like that the woman tells deputies that when The Drifter was out of the apartment she went through his belongings and found several disturbing items including girls underwear frightened and confused she decided she needed to get away from The Drifter
Before something happened to her or her children seven years later investigators wonder whether a girl allegedly held in the basement could have been Stephanie crane this is the corner apartment number one for The Drifter was residing this is the window here where different individuals had said that they had heard a young
Girl screaming or crying in April 2000 armed with the woman’s account Canyon County detectives dig into the drifter’s background they discovered that 13 months before Stephanie vanished in November of 1992 he was arrested on a sex charge involving a minor he was charged at a time that he lived in Portland with
A third degree but never served time because of a plea bargain and allowed to move to Idaho the judge also ruled that any future contact with his daughter would have to be supervised in mid-april detectives track him down at his job when I first confronted this Drifter he was working his basic common
Labor at a local business in Nampa and asked if he will come in for an interview the man agrees to submit to a polygraph and investigators ask him a series of pointed questions they were to the effect did you have anything to do with The Disappearance of Stephanie
Crane did you take Stephanie crane three questions along that nature in which he answered no and indicated that he was being extremely deceptive on his answers when he is told the polygraph results The Drifter becomes defensive he became kind of irate argumentative you know trying to explain why his answers come up deceptive
[Applause] a week later detectives obtain a search warrant for the drifter’s former apartment in Nampa they fully inspect the basement where seven years earlier neighbors said they heard a girl’s voice there was a couple mattresses in the basement some stains appeared to be blood stains which we cut out and labeled we also
Found the rope that had some fibers hairs in it detectives send the bloodstained mattress and rope samples State lab near Boise two months later the results come back blood findings are inconclusive forensics can’t determine if the blood is human or from an animal the hair sample is human
But the state lab isn’t equipped to perform DNA testing on it because it doesn’t have the follicle attached they would have to have more evidence as far as being able to say well you know this was here was Stephanie crane although investigators believe they have some evidence that The Drifter could be
Connected to Stephanie’s disappearance it’s not enough for an arrest so the mystery surrounding what happened to Stephanie lingers such an old case it’s hard to say if if anybody will ever be able to find out you know more time goes by the harder it gets a month later Idaho State Police and the
FBI are back in chalice still looking for evidence that might implicate The Drifter they show a photo lineup to Tina Foster who was working at the bowling alley the night Stephanie disappeared when asked if she sees the suspicious looking man described seven years earlier by Stephanie’s franchise
Tina points to the photo of The Drifter [Applause] Says she’s not 100 certain with no positive identification or physical evidence like [Applause] in June 2002 the name of a man authorities questioned five years ago surfaces again Bonneville County sheriff’s deputies are in Hot Pursuit of Keith hescock the hunter who was arrested for poaching and possessing pornography of seemingly underage females now hesscock is suspected in a horrific
Sex crime he had kidnapped a little girl from Idaho Falls he had raped her he handcuffed her to the bed and he left and went to work he had told her that he had done this before and he killed the little girl she got a hold of the fire extinguisher
Pounded on the handcuffs until she got away four hours after his 14 year old victim escapes hesscock is Tracked Down by authorities at his house when Mr hesscock showed up back up from work the cops were waiting at his front door he took off they had a high-speed
Chase through Bonneville County ended up in Madison County he got out he shot and killed the police dog shot the deputy in the leg and then shot himself [Applause] up here hesscock dies from the wound so authorities may never know if he had anything to do with Stephanie’s
Disappearance but say he remains a suspect November 2003 Hazel suffers another major loss when her husband Earl dies for the next three years there are no new developments in the case until December 2006 when a stunning lead comes into law enforcement from the town of Thorn Creek Idaho 165 miles from Dallas
Police there are investigating a man’s suicide and they discovered that he left behind a note describing feelings of guilt that drove him to take his own life the note contains a name that’s new to investigators Kevin Mooney the friend had left a note saying he had to kill himself
Because he could not live with the sacred that Kevin Mooney had told him tell him that he had picked up a girl in chalice braved and killed her and he referred to her as death In December 2006 13 years after nine-year-old Stephanie crane vanished a new and new and actual lead suddenly surfaces a man in Thorn Creek 165 miles from chalice left a suicide he had kidnapped a girl named Steph in chalice killed her chalice law enforcement jumps on it the Sheriff’s Office received the
Information we called Idaho state and the FBI they discover that Kevin Mooney is a 42 year old who changes jobs frequently and has several criminal convictions for minor offenses Mr Mooney was contacted brought into the FBI office in Boise in a polygraph Mooney tells police he can’t remember
Being in Chalice on October 11 1993 sheriff’s deputies conduct a full search of his house we did take cadaver dogs around Mr Mooney’s property and they did not hit on anything Moody tells investigators he doesn’t know why his friend would say he killed a girl when he passes his polygraph detectives
No longer consider him a person of interest the investigation is once again at a dead end on October 11 2012 19 years after Stephanie went missing the crane family experiences yet another tragedy 19 years from the day that we lost Stephanie we lost spin just massive heart attack Stephanie’s father Ben
Is 48 years old Hazel says that living through the loss of her first granddaughter has forever changed the way her family treats one another never leave without another hug can say it I love you even if it’s just on the phone You don’t leave each other mad you know because life’s short according to Hazel she has received some updates about investigation into Stephanie’s disappearance over the years but she understands why she wasn’t told about all the possible leads that came into the Sheriff’s Office we knew everything that came in that
Supposedly happened you would be up and down so much that you’d probably drive yourself crazy so I think they’re protecting you Linda dubiel who took the missing person report from Stephanie’s mother 24 years ago has never forgotten the young Carefree nine-year-old girl I just want to know what happened to
This little little girl that went missing when I was on duty where is she why can’t we find her it seems like she just disappeared Into Thin Air then in June 2016 the search for Stephanie heats up yet again Linda dubia finding a girl in his basement back in 1993. the Custer County
Sheriff’s Office won’t disclose anything from those interviews because Stephanie’s case is an ongoing investigation detective Wayne Christie who interviewed The Drifter back in 2000 says he felt like he was on the verge of solving the case frustrating thing about this this kid rifter we were pretty convinced
That he was involved in it but we just couldn’t get him to him he came close but he just wouldn’t take that final step foreign Hazel says that she does her best to live in the present but there is one thing about Stephanie’s disappearance that she cannot shake I’ve fought for years that surely somebody saw something whether they didn’t realize they saw what they saw or they just didn’t want to come forth with it
After all this time with her being gone I would hope that if somebody had seen something they would come forward recent news stories about girls who were abducted and then escaped from their kidnappers decades later give some people in chalice hope when I saw this story of the Three kidnapped gals from Ohio
And then the story of JC Lee Dugard out of California every now and then I’ll think maybe she’s still alive Hazel says that after all these years she still can’t imagine what happened to Stephanie on that October night I’m not even sure she’s dead and maybe
That’s just because I want to think that her loved ones say that even 24 years after she disappeared Stephanie remains in their hearts October 11th for always bringing back memories of Stephanie fall you remember Stephanie it’s just never be forgotten you know not for many of us Titan my third child
Stephanie after my best friend friend she’s still a part of my family she always will be progression software reveals what Stephanie crane would look like today at age 33 if you have any information about Stephanie Crane or disappearance you can confidentially contact the Custer County Sheriff’s Office at 208-879-2232
Allison Jackson Floyd disappeared on Sunday July 30th 2006. when a person disappears without a trace often the most critical information is hidden in their actions and words from the days before they vanished Allison’s last known whereabouts May hold the clues to what happened to her foreign four-year-old mother of two vanishes
After a night out a detective call me and says just want to let you know that your door is missing detectives aren’t convinced she’s in danger all signs led to the likelihood that she had left the area on her own accord but her family finds this hard to Fathom my sister would have
Picked up the phone and said I’m okay leave me alone police Wonder Could a troubled marriage be connected to her disappearance the fact cell phone was turned off and that he was not active active searching for his wife did it appear to be odd or is there a random killer on the loose
You just can’t believe that one human being could do this to another [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] June 2006. it’s another hot humid summer in Wilmington North Carolina while tourists filled the Charming southern town thirty-four-year-old Allison Jackson Foy is trying to get her life together she has been living in North Carolina with her two daughters and husband Mike for a year and a half after moving from
Their home on Long Island she had told me that Mike wasn’t doing well good job wise and that he would do a lot better if they moved down now more cool for what what Mike did and I said well you have to do what is best for you and the family
But as the youngest of four siblings in a close-knit family the move has been hard on Allison in addition to leaving her extended family behind she is also parted with a place that’s always been a special refuge for her her father’s Dance Studio she was totally involved and so Yoshi loved the dance
She was very excellent in gymnastics in addition to tap jazz in ballet Allison danced in her father’s studio for as long as I could remember it was just part of who she was We all lose danced and took lessons and then Allison progressed and became an assistant teacher then a regular teacher problems begin to she is fighting an urge to use prescription drugs and her marriage is failing she knew her marriage was in crisis and I know both of them were not
Happy with a volatile marriage the Foy household becomes uncomfortable for the children then Allison is hit with her most painful hardship yet his custody of her oldest daughter Courtney who goes to live with her father Allison’s first husband I know good things were not happening in
The house there was a lot of fighting I think Courtney might have been scared this is a big blow to Allison over the past year her children have been one of the only sources of joy in her life her kids are definitely a big part of her life
Um they they practically were her life when she became a mother that was you know huge for her I think Allison a lot of times in her life was always searching for something more and I think that being a mother kind of made her feel more complete after her oldest daughter moves out
Allison reaches a Breaking Point in late June contacts her sister Lisa in New Jersey for guidance she said I need to be around family can I please come up and visit you and I said yeah she said well I have another problem I have no car she
Said my car broke down I have no way to get up there so I rented her a car and she drove up with her daughter Jordan I spent the year two with them we had a good an excellent visit we would always just hang out and talk have a glass of wine
There were definite concerns she was worried financially and she had said to me things were not great in her marriage Allison tells her sister she cannot deal with the excessive fighting and is thinking about divorcing Mike that coming from a divorce home herself Allison knows the impact of Separation
Can have on a family parents got divorced when I was only two years old there was a lot of movement in my family and I always feel like she got the brunt of that but I also felt that as she got older and was kind of trying
To seek out her own life that a lot of times she blamed the situation she was in on her childhood encourages Allison to take control of her life I had tried to say to her you know now is the time in your life to really stand up for yourself and to do
What you need to do you know be an adult and take a stand and do what’s necessary to make your life right after a week of therapeutic talks with Lisa in New Jersey Allison attends A Farewell brunch with friends and family before driving back to North Carolina it
Was a great time we were laughing having a good time but I gotta say I sensed that when it was time for her to go there were tears and I knew was not easy Returns home Lisa receives a promising phone call from her sister she had just got a job as assistant manager of the Holiday Inn in Wilmington and she was ecstatic it was the happiest that I had heard of her in a long time she said I’m doing this you should see
My office things are finally looking up for me Four days after starting her new job Alison decides to celebrate with her close friend Chris Williams he was someone that she had met in Wilmington who was really almost just The Confidant he’s an ex-marine and they just got along very well and he was Allison’s sounding board
On this night the two meet for a few drinks at their favorite hangout Junction Pub and billiards unbeknownst to Chris this would be the last time he would see his friend before she disappeared Two days later Allison’s Father John is getting ready to go to work at his Long Island dance studio when he notices the blinking light on his answering machine when he hears the message it takes his breath away a detective call May assist just want to let you know that you do
What is missing John his shock and immediately calls the detective who left him the message he finds out Allison’s husband Mike reported her missing two days earlier when he failed to come home from a local bar the detective told us oh well maybe she had some problems with
Her husband and she decided to leave and go I said no she would never leave she would never leave her children coming up detectives discover a compelling clue that leads them to believe is a walk away all songs led to the likelihood that she had left the air on her own Court foreign Jackson Foy a mother of two is getting her life back on track accepted a job as an assistant manager at a local hotel but on Monday August 1st 2006 police call Allison’s father informing him that his daughter has been missing for two days Mike Allison’s husband has told police
That his wife never returned home after going to a local bar panicked her father reaches out to Allison’s older sister Lisa my phone rang and it was my dad and he’s like oh I’ve been trying to you know not call you because I thought things were gonna change and I said what
Allison’s two sisters are on vacation in New Hampshire but make plans to meet the rest of the family and brothers home in Delaware and then travel to North Carolina in the meantime they try to make sense of why Allison has been missing for two days and why Mike Allison’s husband has
Called the police department but not them Mike never called my father Mike never called me he definitely knew my phone number maybe he told the police department to call me because we didn’t have very good communicative things between myself and my Detectives learned that just a few days prior to Allison’s disappearance reports had been filed with police accusing her stealing money from two former employers if you have ever gone through financial difficulties yourself and you have a family that you’re trying to keep together I think desperate times sometimes school for desperate measures
And I think she really didn’t know what to do this convinces police that Allison has left of her own free will Detective Lee Odom would later be assigned to the investigation we knew at that point that she had warrants on her that she was having marital issues with her husband and all
Signs led to the likelihood that she had left the area on her own accord although they believe Allison is likely a Leo police begin an investigation and talked to Chris Williams the last person to spend time with Allison at Junction Pub in Billiards on Sunday night they
Had meant after work around 10 pm and we’re having drinks at some point Miss Floyd wanted to leave Chris asks the bartender to call Allison a taxi at that point a person who Mr Williams says identified himself as a cab driver came in asked Mrs Foy if she was the one who called the taxi and she hugged Mr Williams and left the borrow police continue to question Chris but
Become convinced that he is not involved in Allison’s disappearance we can put Allison Foy leaving approximately 15 to detectives turn to people at the bar for more information on what the bar owners uh the people working that night as well as patrons at the bar no concrete information in
Reference to her whereabouts was was obtained at that point police also check local cab companies logs but are unable to find any cabs going to the bar that night meanwhile Allison’s family continues to try and reach her on her cell phone but they are mystified when they learn from
Detectives that her husband Mike had saying to the police this is the most ridiculous thing ever how can he turn off the cell phone and we got the phone turned back on his answer was I can’t pay uh all that money to have a cell phone on the fact that the cell phone
Was turned off and that he was not actively searching for his wife did appear to be odd and he and he tells Allison is run off because of their turbulent marriage when they asked him where he was the night Allison went missing Mike says he was at home with their daughter
None of his neighbors remember seeing him and police are unable to corroborate his story Meanwhile investigators uncover some information that could prove helpful Allison was still driving the rental car her sister Lisa had rented for her to drive to New Jersey we weren’t aware that a rental car or a vehicle was involved with her at the time she went missing detectives went back to
Pub and Billiard and did locate that vehicle according to Chris Allison didn’t feel comfortable driving after drinking so she agreed to take the cab he called police searched the car hoping to find clues that could shed light on Allison’s whereabouts inside the vehicle was a bottle of pills a rental agreement
And a pack of cigarettes the name of the pill bottle was not Allison Foy it came back to another person detectives Tracked Down the woman whose name is on the empty bottle of painkillers but she doesn’t know how Allison obtained the pills we have looked into that personal several different occasions and
There’s nothing to lead us to believe that that person was involved in The Disappearance of Allison Ford August 8 2006. it’s been nine days since Allison Jackson Foy was last seen and after several days of travel her family arrives in Wilmington North Carolina they immediately begin searching then
All kind of tips started coming in oh I saw her here I remember my brother my sister and I and my dad standing on a corner with posters at two in the morning everybody just comes out of the bars at somebody says well she baby she’s in these areas and all of us
We just drove and drove and was all over the place meanwhile detectives receive a phone call from Allison’s boss at the Holiday Inn she has discovered Allison’s diary who suddenly his investigators access to Allison’s inner thoughts she had several Pages problems with her husband Financial issues lots of personal issues
So it kind of solidified a couple things in the minds of the investigators that she probably had just run off but that explanation doesn’t sit well with Allison’s family my sister would have picked up the phone and said I’m okay leave me alone I don’t want to be
Found right now at the very very least after searching for 10 long days Allison’s family is no closer to finding Allison than when they arrived heartbroken they return home to their jobs and their lives none of us felt great that we weren’t going to be in
Wilmington and kind of be the eyes and the ears Lisa seeks help from the Q Center for missing adults to keep Allison’s story alive the center introduces her to a private investigator who the family hopes will Breathe new life into the case coming up a new investigator reveals a
Surprising lead they were supposedly out in the parking lot speaking with Allison after she had left the company of Chris Williams After 10 days of searching Allison Jackson foy’s family is she seemed happy with her new job went out drinking with a friend after work and is now nowhere to be found in Wilmington North Carolina they’ve returned to their homes in Long Island and New Jersey and in an effort
To draw national attention to the case they go to New York City on September 8th to stand in NBC’s Today Show crowd in hopes of getting some air time we’ve wrote a ton of t-shirts with Allison’s face on it a ton of posters who started saying can you guys mind
Putting this shirt on we’re trying you know this is my sister who’s missing from Wilmington North Carolina we you know we want to try to get her seen or whatever efforts don’t go unnoticed you’re looking for my sister Allison Jackson Foy she’s missing from Wilmington North Carolina Www.helpfindout.com two young kids call the police anyone yes please we were very lucky that that happened at that time some of those people are gonna go home and look at the website and be interested in the story and and you know keep Alison’s face in the media while the family is busy gathering
National attention in the New York area private investigator Mark Benson is working the case in North Carolina the bartenders some of the people that were regulars at the bar and here’s a rumor from a bar employee then Allison may have left Junction Pub and billiards with three young tourists
From the Raleigh Durham area late three young ladies that had been partying at the pub most of the night and they were staying at one of the local beaches that they were supposedly out in the parking lot speaking with Allison after she had left the company of Chris
Williams since it didn’t seem like a lot of people went out that door it seemed very important to find these three women who would have seen what happened beyond that door after talking to more bar patrons and asking local media to spread the word no one can verify that the three female
Tourists were ever there or that they spoke with Allison on the night of July 30th Benson becomes skeptical that there is any Merit to the tip if she was really that flamboyant and out there in the parking lot yucky up with these girls it seems like Chris Williams of anybody in
That club would have identified and been over still after two months police begin to believe that Allison may not have left of her own free will and detectives hone in on the foy’s home with permission from Allison’s husband Mike they searched the house and four days later his truck on October 6th of
2006 the family residents of Mike and Allison Foy uh was uh searched with alternative light source uh looking for any signs of blood or anything along those lines that would throw a red flag up nothing of evidentiary value was obtained from the vehicle Mike’s vehicle or the Family Residence
Although nothing suspicious is uncovered at Allison’s Home Police still want to bring Mike in for a polygraph test but after talking it over with a friend he refuses to take it while police continue looking into Mike private investigator Mark Benson is busy chasing down other leads there were tips
Coming in constantly and you gotta understand I think we had like a ten thousand dollar reward uh that was posted I mean on a flyer and these were posted all over town and every new article that was done four months after Allison went missing we got information that there was
Somebody trying to activate a membership account to one of the big box stores down in Atlanta Georgia area the identity they were trying to open up the account with was foyer of Allison this is one of the same employers Allison Aletta who’s her former employer’s identity she is familiar with
Atlanta as her daughter go to dance competitions in the area I think when that call came in I did get my hopes up The person you know the captured picture that they use for the membership cards they sent me a picture of this person and it was not Allison it’s another blow for the family to give up hope Allison’s Sister Lisa continues to make frequent visits to Wilmington often bringing along Allison’s childhood friend Peter Roach
Whatever we would go down to North Carolina we would stamp our money before we went so anything we handed out anything we bought the website was on the money and it would just circulate around they also leave coasters that feature Allison’s missing persons website at Junction Pub and billiards we wanted
Just to make people aware of Allison’s case Allison and that the fact that she was missing and she was missing from um a place where these people you know go to their their own one of their own people one of their own friends one of the people in their community Good afternoon and welcome to the Blue Line radio show I am your host Mark Benson in the studio with me in addition to working as a private investigator Mark Benson has a weekly Radio Show in the Wilmington North Carolina area he uses that Forum to discuss crime in
The community and he is especially determined to tell listeners about Allison Jackson fully what I wanted to try and do is reach out to the people in the pub they knew who she was they knew a lot about Allison but we weren’t getting a lot of information out of the
Patrons of the pub so what we were trying to do was trying to tap into that and say look if you know something please let us know then on September 9 2007 Benson gets a curious email that could drastically change the investigation a Woman by the name of Susan iannoni
Wants to know why everyone at Junction Pub and billiards thinks her husband had something to do with Allison’s disappearance and of course this was absolute news to me we had ten thousand dollar reward posters all over the place and if everybody was talking about him had something to do with Alice’s
Disappearance why weren’t these people talking with the Wilmington Police Department uh why weren’t these people calling the tip lines which is out to this woman to get more details about her mysterious story what he finds out will rock the case to its core huge red flags [Applause] Get more disappeared online at investigationdiscovery.com September 2007 and Allison Jackson Foy has been missing for more than a year Allison’s oldest daughter continues to live with her biological father in Georgia while her husband Mike continues to take care of the couple’s five-year-old daughter although he still does not participate
In searches for his wife police don’t believe he’s involved in her disappearance meanwhile private investigator Mark Benson has just received a bizarre email a Woman by the name of Susan ioni wants to know why everyone at the pub where Allison was last seen thinks Susan’s husband killed Allison Jackson Foy
He’s contacted Benson hoping to his name what’s puzzling to Benson is that he has spent numerous hours in the junction pub at Billiards and has never even heard her husband’s name Tim iyanone that’s when susananone told me that her husband had been arrested by the Wilmington Police Department
For kidnapping and sex offense of a Street walking prostitute News of all surfaces Tim iyanone is a cab driver huge huge red flag uh you know here here it got quiet for the longest time we had no leads we had no substantial we really didn’t have anything to put anything together and here her husband was a cab driver
Smart obviously reported back to me anytime that anything was going on he more kind of really strong feeling that there was a connection after informing the family Mark passes the tip along to the woman Department detectives move quickly to develop what they believe is their first solid lead
Mr arnoni was in the pub virtually every night of the week professional capacity and otherwise he would often pick up fares from the pub and on his off time he would essentially hang out in the pub kids are already familiar with ianoni and his dark past
On 8 27 of 2007 Timothy iannoni was arrested and charged with first degree rape and uh kidnapping for assaulting Sonia Williams a known local prostitute she claims that he raped and beat her for a pretty good duration of time she was able to escape later and notify the police
Ioni was questioned about the Sonia Williams case what I’m looking forward to crying around going by picking up prostitutes listening for prostitution but she’s claiming right at the same time investigators use the opportunity to ask him if he had anything to do with The Disappearance of Allison Jackson Foy
Mr uh Noni advised he had no involvement foy’s disappearance and didn’t even hardly know who she was ianoni said he was at home with his wife at the top heroes still looking for ties to the case police searched the records kept by the cab company where ianoni Works got
Several boxes of records and physically went through them until I found the time card for I-90 on the night of July 29 2006. at the time of Allison foy’s disappearance he had clocked out shortly after midnight that night although I annuni was off the clock police are not convinced this rules him out
Mr arnone was at what they call a 24-hour driver he was more on call and always had his cab with him either at his residence or in close proximity to his location bartenders would often call iannoni on his personal cell phone to pick up theirs at the pub police check ayanoni’s
Phone records we looked into that in relationship to that night the night of July 29 2006 until July 30th 2006 and were unable to find any records that would indicate that he received phone calls from any of those persons when detectives are unable to play
Cyanone at the bar the bar it’s a huge blow to the investigation meanwhile on November 14 2007 iannoni enters a plea agreement to address the kidnapping and assault charges filed by Sonia Williams at the time Miss Williams was a very bad drug addict and and prostitute
And we were unable to get her to come to court Mr ioni did leave to a felony of crimes against nature and was also convicted of a misdemeanor of southern female the kidnapping charge is dropped and irony is sentenced to 36 months probation hoping to mend his reputation he
Volunteers to come in for a polygraph test regarding Allison Jackson foy’s case When asked if he had anything to do with her disappearance he said he surpasses the test it looked as though Mr ioni was not our guy we have exhausted every possible lead that that went of nowhere just dissolved really 2008 almost two years since Allison’s disappearance detective Leon is enjoying a neighborhood cookout when his cell phone rings with ominous news detective Overton uh advised that he and other detectives were on scene off of Carolina Beach Road and had a body a skeleton later the detective gets another disturbing call
Detective Irvington called me back and advised that they had a another body I kind of got inquisitive and immediately got dressed and went to the scene earring I get a phone call I don’t know why you get upset I don’t get worried but it’s going to be all over the Press
Tomorrow they recover remains Detective Lee Odom has received an alarming phone call two sets of remains been found in a wooded area behind a local strip mall in Wilmington North Carolina drives to the scene he wonders if this could be a tragic ending to Allison Jackson foy’s case once there he learns that a pedestrian
Cutting through the woods discovered the two shallow Graves what’s disturbing is that the graves are located just three miles from Junction Pub and billiards but perhaps the most showing finding is what surrounds one set of remains Allison foyer was reported to be last seen in a pinkish red sweater
At the time the initial skeleton was located part of the skeleton was encapsulated in a pinkish red sweater fitting the description we had for Voice last clothing if this is Alison’s sweater it now lies weathered and partially hidden by leaves it’s a torn fabric indicating over 20 stab wounds tells a harrowing story
After more than two years has Alison Jackson Foy finally been found several pieces of jewelry were located around near the body that jewelry was later identified as belonging to her although it will take DNA testing to confirm whether the remains are alices investigators alert Allison’s extended family of the possibility
I’ll never forget this I was laying in bed on a Sunday night it was probably less pressed tomorrow they recovered remains police begin the process of making a preliminary identification of the second set of remains they believe they are those of a local woman named Angela Robin
She was down or what she was a Street walking known prostitute she had family but the family really didn’t keep apps with her they didn’t know where she was unlike Allison’s family did if the two sets of remains do turn out to belong to Alison and Angela police
Are hard-pressed to find any connection between these two women apart from their final resting place we’ve spent several months trying to find any any kind of evidence or cooperating factors that the victims even knew each other uh at present time we still can’t connect the victims to
Ever even speaking to each other before Allison’s family is now left with the long wait for the DNA results while police continue their invest In June of 2008 I was able to track down a an employee with the pirate stable restaurant which is located just uh east of where the bugs were located the employee stated that he on several occasions had seen a Port City Taxi van the witness reports seeing a man in
Close proximity to where the bodies were found but he says it has been at least a year and he can’t recall exactly when he saw him he was asked to come to the Wilmington Police Department and sit down with a sketch artist uh which he did and a sketch was rendered
A white male wearing a ball cap glasses and a mustache the sketch in my opinion Club resembled Timothy right down to the shape and style of the glasses that the witness described in the sketch there is another startling tie to Tim iyanone the two sets of remains were found
Roughly 100 yards from where iannoni allegedly attacked Sonia Williams everything was fitting fairly well to me um and that’s when the police department started to take a strong look at Tim now armed with enough probable cause police are able to obtain a search warrant for Tim iannoni’s current and former residences
There were several unusual stains in the prior residence that just uh just enough to draw suspicion as to what they were samples from they all yielded negative results for blood himayanoni is brought in for questioning again I had nothing to do with it you got a twin um [Applause]
Police have reached a dead end and with no concrete evidence ioni is free to leave After six long months the DNA results are finally complete Allison’s family receives the information they have been dreading since she disappeared more than two years earlier the remains found in the shallow grave are allisons it’s kind of that double-edged sword because at once it’s like wow we’re gonna have
Answers we’re gonna have resolution we’re gonna be able to bring Allison home you know I’m gonna have answers for Jordan and Courtney about what happened to their mom you know she didn’t just leave them like people have said you know because her mom you know Allison
May have been a lot of things but that was not one of them and um for me that was big that I could call my nieces and say um you know something very tragic and sad happened to your mom but the other side of it was you know you don’t want her to
Be dead she laid there for all those years and wasn’t too far away from the restaurant that’s what I mean I can’t conceive that you understand it’s um it’s my bothering it’s It’s my I told my other kids because I’m gonna follow this through a toy finder Allison’s Sister Lisa travels to North Carolina with close friend Peter roach to pay at Allison’s final resting place in the woods but just when they think their nightmare is over they make a gruesome discovery
I was looking around and all of a sudden Peter goes oh my gosh and I’m like what he goes and there were Bones on on the ground the Press had said that we were coming to town to pick up Allison’s remains you know they always kind of knew when I was
There so you know as horrifying as it is to have to go get my sister in these circumstances now we have to deal with this and it just turned everything upside down because it it seemed like a cruel trick all of the remains were believed to have already been removed by investigators
Allison’s loved ones cannot grasp how additional bones could now be in the area they were later identified as belonging to Allison Ford the investigation into the the bones in that area led us nowhere we were unable to advise how or anything else about how those bones got there
I mean it’s very sad but also you’re almost filled with anger because you just can’t believe that one human being can do this to another just you know my Throne to the ground like she’s a piece of trash just left for the animals to get out and it’s horrific it’s it’s horrific
And something I hope no one you know you should never have to go through in your life December 2008 the police’s main suspect timayanoni and his wife Susan agreed to a sit-down interview with NBC’s Dateline are you a murderer no did you kill Alison Ford no did you kill Angela Roth no
What do you think happened to those women Speculate I don’t know what kind of mine could contemplate doing something like that so I mean it’s I no idea this ain’t gonna happen that the person took about execution planes While investigators have been confounded by the case for five years they will not give up hope that Allison’s killer will be brought to Justice the most frustrating case I’ve ever been involved in and I’ve worked dozens dozens of murders uh until this case I had never felt the frustration that I feel now
Somebody killed those women somebody discarded those two women and there is somebody that is walking amongst us that is responsible for that crime and as far as I’m concerned the families and the citizens of this area deserve that person to be taken off the street life will never be the same for Allison
Jackson voice family they carry loss and sadness with them every day and I’m still I mean there is an interesting why I don’t think of her and that I just uh it’s it’s just mind-boggling that that this should happen there is never closure and I I mean I
Don’t think you can ever shut the book on that mind I mean my life the life of my sister’s two daughters my family’s life is forever changed Margaret haddock and Mcenroe disappeared on Tuesday October 10 2006 when a person disappears without a trace often the most critical information is hidden in
Their actions and words from the days before they vanished Margaret Mcenroe’s last known whereabouts May hold the clues to what happened to her Margaret haddock and Mcenroe has always been a fighter when you met Margaret you’d never forgot her she’s a force to be reckoned with as a volunteer
Firefighter she became a local hero when she saved a woman’s life at the risk of her own that was kind of margarine she was firefighter should be of a soldier she’s kind of liked action but she is also known to have an explosive temper a very strong-willed he both heads with
A lot of people one fall day the young mother three disappears without a trace only thing that was missing from the house was a black Army duffel bag and approximately eleven thousand dollars in cash did Margaret leave to make a new life every way we went in the
Investigation kind of took us in a different direction or did her fighting Spirit goat someone into Foul Play we’re missing I sat down and I said something really bad happened [Applause] [Applause] As 29 year old Margaret haddock and Mcenroe dances and pounds her way around the boxing ring she grimaces not only from the effort to keep hitting her instructor’s glove but from the pain that’s throbbing in her legs she suffered from a chronic knee condition she was supposed to have
Surgery on her knees in fact she was going to have it done the following week at only five feet two inches tall and less than 110 pounds Margaret is Tiny But incredibly strong an athlete and an army veteran Margaret has trained herself to stand up and fight for what
She believes in whether in a gym boxing ring or her everyday life her friend Lisa giacone remembers first meeting Margaret 13 years ago forced to be reckoned with but in a good way or it was a tomboy very tough firefighter you know in the army tank mechanic but
But more than everybody saw I’ll never forget walking in her house and she’s sitting on the couch smell that there’s a roast in the oven and she’s knitting and I’m like uh who’s this remember first recognizing the force of their new daughter’s personality they brought her home from Mississippi where
They adopted her when she was seven weeks old as the plane was landing at Newark Airport she let out a yell and it was a long time before she stopped yelling she was a wonderful little girl but she had a mind of her own and she had a very
Quick strong volatile temper but she also deep down Had a Heart of Gold when she was five the family expanded the haddicans adopted three more daughters Margaret was the Tomboy of the group we got Christina and Adrian and then the next year we got Beth in so we went from
One to four in a year Margaret was admitted to a gifted and talented program in Brooklyn but when she was seven the family moved to war in New Jersey and she lost interest in school she just didn’t quite just she was a free spirit she couldn’t sit still
For more than a few minutes at a time she often sought Escape up a tree her love of school was such that I had to climb a tree to get her out of the tree to bring it to school we all knew Margaret as a good kid fun kid
Um a lot of spunk Pizzazz a lot of troublesome youth but um we always knew where she was the feisty and active Margaret first drew the attention of local cops in her early teens Lieutenant Bobby Glenn remembers Margaret from the days when he was a 20 year old rookie on patrol
My patrol car got egged on Mischief like one Halloween many many years ago um she was found walking in the area I could never prove that it was her but deep down inside I know it was Margaret Margaret grew up to be a no-nonsense type of woman her strong will had a
Positive side the one point made her a hero in 1999 when she was 21 Margaret became a fully trained and qualified volunteer firefighter for the Washington Valley Fire Department one of only three female firefighters in the Warren area she gave it her all she didn’t care if it was a blaze if it
Was inside a building she was going in and she was a great firefighter the guy had no problem going in that fire with a woman they knew Margaret hadn’t covered and they covered her too When Hurricane Floyd struck that same year she saved a woman swept from a bridge by a flooding stream Margaret actually was able to save by jumping into the river and tying the woman up with her suspenders from her fire here and waiting there for several hours until she was pulled to safely
Can’t swim but Margaret never thought of that Margaret thought about saving people that was Margaret he received an award for Valor but her impetuous nature could also alienate people when her temper unraveled her Fury was Unleashed on friends and family Margaret was not a person who would take
Any sass but she could give it she was so someone who could be mad at you at one moment in time and then give you his shirt off her back the next day we had problems with bombed heads she bumped heads with a lot of people though her closest friends and family
Except her temper as part of her nature it wreaks havoc on other relationships it broke up her engagement to the father of her first child Sarah Margaret and the father of Sarah were very close to getting married and then there was a disagreement and that was that after September 11th Margaret left Sarah
With her parents and enlisted in the Army where she was trained as a tank mechanic she seemed productive and happy much better than we thought you know the discipline of boot camp we never thought you’d survived she survived and thrived she enjoyed it just need to find a
Little niche almost like the volunteer fire department in Washington Valley she kind of found the hole in both places but after two years Margaret received a medical discharge and came home in 2004 she began living with another volunteer Fireman Tim Mcenroe the couple had a daughter Emily and when Margaret
Got pregnant again they got married Melissa was born prematurely in 2006 and spent weeks in the hospital possible at all times but it was all about making sure that the baby was well Margaret is able to channel her fiery Spirit when it comes to being a mother baby Melissa is getting stronger and
Margaret has given a firefighting to stay home with her and her older sisters Emily 20 months and Sarah aged on Thank you on Columbus Day Afternoon Margaret visits her father the last time I saw Margaret I was at home she was antsy but it’s hard to tell normal to me with Nancy she asks him to take her to an orthopedic surgeon for a procedure on her knees the following week
She asked me if I would take her and bring her home and I said sure no problem call to her husband and begins angrily pacing the floor getting more and more worked up finally she hangs up on him and she said something to the effect of I’m gonna
Divorce my leaping husband she was very agitated Patrick hadigan dismisses the Outburst as just a typical Spurt of Margaret’s temper early that evening Margaret’s mother Eileen gets a call from her daughter ask the children and stay at her parents house later she calls again equal that night
Said no she wasn’t going to come that night she’d be ill for the next day but she didn’t make him the next day either the last time Eileen haddican speaks to her daughter before she disappears Coming up Margaret’s temper gets a workout and police are called if she’s mad and she’s fighting with you she’s gonna scream she’s gonna yell she might strike you and I know that that was the kind of argument that they had had on Monday foreign The day after Margaret haddock and Mcenroe and her husband Tim have a vicious argument her mother Eileen is expecting her daughter to come by with her children for an indefinite stay but Margaret never calls or shows up on Tuesday at the time Eileen isn’t alarmed that she had calmed down and whatever
They had been arguing about was over and everything was kind of back to normal it was not unusual for more to change her mind on something or or calm down if she was upset so that we had no real reason to think anything had happened what the Heinekens don’t know is that
The fight between Margaret and her husband Tim Mcenroe the previous afternoon had been a protracted one verging on violence Margaret was the type of person if she’s mad and she’s fighting with you screen she’s gonna yell she might strike you know that that was the kind of argument
That they had had on Monday the altercation was serious enough that Margaret’s cell phone was broken and Tim Mcenroe called police Margaret stalked off to her parents house furious with her husband [Applause] Margaret’s husband Tim Mcenroe had called our headquarters to report that he was involved in a verbal dispute
Sometime in the early afternoon two of our officers responded to the Officers were met in the driveway by Mcenroe who discounted the fight as just a marital disagreement and said his wife had left to have to resume Patrol report filed on the incident Margaret’s friend Lisa says that later that Monday evening a very distressed Margaret calls her from the firehouse
She told me about a fight that had happened at the house that she had walked out she wasn’t going to fight anymore I said well you know what it’s getting late I said go home I’m fine I’m just angry she was screaming and yelling on the phone The next morning Margaret calls Lisa again the phone rang and it was Margaret she gave me this wicked evil laugh and I said oh no what did you do according to Lisa Margaret announces that she has gone on strike for that morning she says her husband claims she does nothing all
Day so she decided to leave it to him to tend to the kids and take the two older ones to school and daycare Lisa isn’t surprised by her friend’s provocative actions and makes plans to go shopping with Margaret later that afternoon it was a few minutes before nine and she
Says gotta go I’m like why she was Tim just pulled it gotta go I’m like all right I’ll talk to you in a few she’s like talking about click and that was the last phone call what have I heard from her that was the last time that anybody other than
Margaret’s husband reports having any contact with her whatsoever That afternoon according to Margaret’s husband Tim he is at a landscaping job when he gets a call from her she tells him they are out of baby formula and asks him to run out and get some and bring it home he does so arriving about 1 30.
He quickly leaves again to run some errands when he returns around three o’clock the house feels strangely empty he calls for his wife but gets no response he looks in all the rooms and he’d found their youngest child alone in the crib signed to Margaret when Lisa doesn’t hear from Margaret
About shopping that afternoon she just thinks that Margaret got busy I honestly didn’t think anything of it figuring you know maybe the baby was fussy maybe she wasn’t feeling well it’s plans and when you have babies they change all the time The next day Lisa says she gets a call from Tim’s mother asking her if she has seen Margaret she tells Lisa that Margaret has apparently run off stunned and dismayed dismayed she asks Tim’s mother some key questions the day before and the argument that they had had the car was there
Well I said what would she take I don’t know but don’t tell Tim I called you why Margaret’s gone your old tube doesn’t want anybody to know it was just it was just so weird Lisa can’t believe Margaret would go off and leave the baby alone in the house
With no one to take care of her it didn’t make any sense you know if they called and said Margaret’s gone Melissa’s gone Emily’s gone Sarah’s gone I’d be like she’s gotta cool off didn’t believe that she walked off and left Melissa Melissa was an infant Fargo did not
Leave her house and leave this baby isn’t until Thursday afternoon and Mcenroe police to report his wife missing 48 hours ago no one knows where Margaret is for what they have had to do it coming up the search is on for the missing mom and theories about what
Happened to Margaret multiply either a she took off and wasn’t coming back or maybe she was a victim of Foul Play Thank you when Margaret Mcenroe disappeared from her home on Tuesday October 10th 2006 her husband Tim initially did not call police he stated that he had spoke to a couple friends in reference to her disappearance and they said well the police aren’t going to do anything for
24 hours anyway so um wait to report her missing we all know Margaret you know she has a habit of leaving for a day or two to cool down after an argument and then she will be back to me about it he says you know she’s
Got a cool off she’s left before it is true that Margaret has a history of going off to cool down dating from when she was a teenager at 15 she ran away from home after a fight with her parents she said all right I’ll leave and she left she was gone for about
Truckers one of the truck is called us and let us know he had her and he brought her home When she was younger uh did she leave for a day or two before going into the army she left for an extended period of time but once she had her children we’ve never had any reports of her ever leaving them unattended after Tim Mcenroe reports her missing on Thursday October 12th police don’t
Search for Margaret right away having known her for no I assumed that she’d be back in a couple days I did have some problems with the fact it was reported to us a couple days later but as the weekend comes and goes without any word or sighting of Margaret investigators begin thinking that
Certain things don’t add up on Monday October 16th six days after Margaret disappeared Lieutenant Bobby Glenn opens an intensive investigation Into The Disappearance detectives call Margaret’s mother Eileen to ask if her parents know where she is at this point the hannigans still have no idea their daughter is missing
Although Eileen has been trying to reach Margaret since Tuesday I didn’t get an answer on the cell phone and I called the house on Sunday and I was told the marker wasn’t there and I just said pretty cool I got an okay never told the hadigons that she had been missing And then Monday the police quote and that’s the first time we found out that she was missing we didn’t know she was gone and no one called and told us so we found out from the police department it was very upsetting set a list [Applause] when police asked to search his house
Tim Mcenroe is cooperative he allowed a forensic search of his house he allowed forensic search of her computer but remembered by the time we got back to the house to search was probably about five or six days when he started an investigation behind unfortunately you’re playing catch-up
That’s not a place you really want to be despite the passage of time there are still signs of the fight between Margaret and her husband that took place the day before during that argument he alleges that her cell phone was broken there was a cell phone broken cell phone
Still in the garbage a lot of garbage in that in the can it seems like normally would have thrown it out Sergeant Louis demaio is an investigator with the Somerset County prosecutor his office was called into the investigation six days after Margaret haddock and Mcenroe went missing he says Tim Mcenroe told investigators
That the phone wasn’t all Margaret threw at him he came up and started saying she threw a knife in me that kind of thing thought it was kind of strange he left all the stuff laying around like he was waiting to explain it Mcenroe was asked why he hadn’t told the
Officers who responded to his domestic dispute call about the violence he doesn’t tell the responding officers that she threw a knife he doesn’t say that he didn’t want to tell the responding officers that because he didn’t want Margaret to get in trouble investigators are often suspicious of
The spouse of a missing person and the domestic dispute called the day before Margaret disappeared adds to concerns in a case like this the husband or spouse has always looked at first a lot of things don’t add up on what he says I’d like to answer really any probing questions about the case
From everything that any of the investigators told me at the time he just didn’t seem upset enough just it seem that that urgency that you think would be with a with a baby in the house and other young children involved in the situation but there is no record of any previous
Police visits to the home and Tim seems to believe his wife is up and left him as days pass investigators are increasingly troubled than Margaret a devoted mother of three hasn’t at least gotten in touch with her family things just started to build on each other those were some of the officers
That just didn’t seem to to fit investigators noticed that most of Margaret’s possessions are still in her home her broken cell phone credit cards and new car have all been left behind it didn’t appear that she really took anything and we went through her belongings one of the things that seemed
To be missing was an Army duffel bag that she had from her time in the military she needed knee braces those were still in the house can appear that much of any type of clothing was missing Tim tells investigators his wife had threatened to kill herself during their argument the day before she disappeared other friends and family members say Margaret may have been struggling emotionally after the birth of Melissa officers speculate that a severe case of postpartum depression could have overwhelmed Margaret and caused her to
Take her own life we received information from people that we interviewed suffering from postpartum depression I had narrowed down search areas places in Franklin when she grew up places that I was familiar with that I knew that she’d like to go [Applause] the searches begin on October 19th more than a week after Margaret disappeared they starred in areas around her home and expand over the next few days as hundreds of volunteers join the search through Warren Township Serge let’s follow the reason we focused on was an abandoned Quarry located off of
Dockwatch Hollow Road which is uh in the area of her residence with it was like this is the same Brook she rescued a woman from during Hurricane Floyd seven years earlier Searchers find no trace of Margaret I never viewed Margaret as being a Candidate For Suicide I don’t think she would ever kill herself investigators discount suicide in Margaret’s disappearance but they are still in the dark as to what did happen as the investigation progressed forward it seemed more that there was a possibility that either a she took off
And wasn’t coming back she was a victim of Foul Play coming up police recover a potential clue to Margaret’s disappearance they showed Tim Mcenroe the shirt and he positively identified it as one of the belong to Margaret Get more disappeared online at investigationdiscovery.com Anakin Mcenroe disappears from her Warren New Jersey home leaving her and daughter alone in her crib investigators have several theories about what may have happened to her one theory that Margaret simply walked out seems to be back up with some surprising information from her husband
Tim Mcenroe tells authorities that a large sum of cash in the thousands of dollars is missing from the house they believe she took the money that she took off on him he’s a landscaper they deal with cash kind of strange that nothing else was missing but some money and a duffel bag
While police are suspicious of Margaret’s husband they have no evidence that he is responsible for her disappearance they delve into Margaret’s past when she was 18 Margaret hired a detective to locate her biological parents and met both of them that she decided to reconnect with them again but when investigators make contact her
Birth parents tell police they don’t know where she is and there are more puzzling aspects to the case investigators learn that Margaret may have another identity our birth name was Sherwood Haley and she would use that name for like things like Facebook or stuff where she didn’t want people to
Know really that it was her Police’s description of Margaret and the clothes her husband said she was wearing when he last saw her checked pajama pants an army sweatshirt and white Nikes so she is possibly carrying a large black duffel bag and she might be going by the name Sherwood on the bulletin as maybe an alias Detectives dig into Margaret’s relationships looking for anything suspicious they turn their attention to the father of her first child Sarah Margaret had been locked in a bitter custody dispute with him she won full custody of Sarah just days before she disappeared he was investigated and his time was accounted for that thing
The day that she goes missing so he’s been ruled out generally as anyone who may have any knowledge of her disappearance but police don’t believe a stranger abducted Margaret from her home there is no sign of a break-in and Margaret was clearly capable of protecting herself from an attack
Everybody says she’s a fighter fiery I don’t think she’s gonna go down there’s gonna be a brawl she’s she was a soldier firefighter she’s got a little baby there to protect if anybody did try to abduct her it would have been evidence of that person’s blood somewhere because nobody would be able to
Just quietly come and grab her [Applause] thank you Early on Thanksgiving morning five weeks after Margaret went missing there is another strange turn of events a cop on his way to work in a neighboring Township despise a white male acting suspiciously at the side of a road not far from Margaret’s home he believes he saw a suspicious male
Standing behind a guard rail it’s a dead zone so he could not make a phone call to our headquarters reported later he notifies the Warren Police Department a dispatcher sends out a patrol but the man is gone Two officers searched the area and find an army t-shirt lying on the pavement those two officers died then recover that shirt then took it to the Mcenroe residence where they showed Tim Mcenroe the shirt and he positively identified it as being one of the t-shirts that belonged to Margaret
We’ve submitted to the New Jersey State Police lab for trace evidence or any DNA or anything like that but nothing was ever found on it so that kind of went nowhere I did not have any hope that that was going to lead to anything that area was searched repeatedly
T-shirt was found on the pave portion of the roadway there’s no way get numerous Searchers police officers would have missed that t-shirt it didn’t look like it had been laying out very long didn’t make any sense why would somebody throw that out there unless it was a red herring or something
My personal opinion is that some investigators are stumped by now they have exhausted most Avenues supporting the theory that Margaret left on her own did she hook up with somebody from the Army did she just need to get away for a while did she go back to any sort of military
Life she had a lot of issues going on with her health with her knees seeking different just one time by herself to do that so all those Avenues were covered We had checked any type of credit cards that were issued to her for any activity which resulted in nothing we had checked Nationwide all databases for her name and also her birth name Sherwood Haley showed nothing All along investigators have also been considering the possibility of Foul Play I think every minute or day that went by more and more of a said to ourselves this isn’t right and started the question whether that wasn’t misdeed in this that were disappearance most of her friends and family are
Convinced that Margaret would never abandon her children they say motherhood changed her well it was a very good mother she cared tremendously for her children and just look and I I think she would be here if she could we don’t believe in the slightest that she abandoned her children because I
Feel that Margaret being an adopted child had that feeling of Abandonment and I’m quite sure she wouldn’t want her kids to ever have that feeling she knew that anything she needed I would have taken the baby her mom would have taken the baby she would have walked off with her left
In the house There is no evidence that Margaret was seeing someone on the side so police focused their attention on her strained relationship with her husband Margaret was a fiery kind of woman wasn’t actually a straight throw punch now and then or a kick we heard that the relationship between her and her husband
Became violent at different times they knew that they had their differences but I didn’t realize she said it on Monday that there was something more to it because all she kept repeating is I want divorce I’m done I’m done I’m dying up here I wonder her friend Lisa confronts Margaret’s
Husband on the telephone with a scenario she imagines may have happened I was so frustrated and angry at that point I said to me no it’s him I can see it all he says what do you mean I said you’re fighting with her she’s still angry from
The day before she’s screaming in your face she’s probably kicking you you get so angry what happens I said you shove her did she hit her head what happened what do you do detectives noticed that Mcenroe keeps changing his story about the amount of cash he says went missing with his wife
The time he ended up telling people different denominations of money that was taken I think one was six thousand nine thousand eleven thousand was the original we were never really able to prove that the money was missing from the house and to some investigators Mcenroe’s attitude toward his wife’s disappearance
Continues to seem strange he seemed a little agitated but not distraught he wasn’t you know running around oh my God where’s my wife or anything like that he doesn’t seem to be all that concerned with where she’s at I haven’t personally seen him upset he hasn’t reached out to the Warren Police
Department to provide us with any further information into her disappearance however one the element in Mcenroe’s story about his movement that day is confirmed police have a receipt showing he bought baby formula at the approximate time he told them the formula he brought home to his wife
The last time he says he saw her we do ever receive from baby formula go much more into that but some of his his story does check out Mcenroe continues to tell police that he believes his wife has left voluntarily and that he has nothing to do with her going missing
On the one-year anniversary of Margaret’s disappearance family members hold a prayer service at their local Catholic Church in the church Memorial Garden is a statue of an Angel and an eternal flame the hadakins keep lit as a symbol of hope for her return but those hopes are fading closure is
Becoming more apparent to us that it’s going to be she’s a victim of sound playing and that’s not something you want to entertain coming up with the investigation at a standstill local authorities reach out to the FBI and the k ick the cake heats up again we figured let’s maybe get some fresh
Eyes on it see what happens [Applause] the strange disappearance of young mother Margaret haddock and Mcenroe remains a mystery to investigators for four years occasional tips and sightings come in but lead nowhere some people thought that they saw her in Alaska some other people said they saw her at a shopping mall it’s kind of getting like Elvis
She’s seen all over the place but in other words she knows she can’t be she was writing a golf cart from a distance before that it was more in my heart if No way could have been however I swore it was on it wasn’t but [Applause] Margaret’s oldest daughter Sarah now 13 has been living with the Heinekens since her mother disappeared Sarah and her mother used to share birthday rituals like smearing frosting on each other’s faces happy Traditions that are now only memories I think Sarah keeps a lot inside and a
Lot goes on in her mind that’s not really coming out I think she misses her mother probably as much as she did when she disappeared the case frustrates law enforcement in 2011 after several years off the case Sergeant demaio comes back as a Cold Case Investigator he and the Somerset
County prosecutor call in the FBI we figured let’s maybe get some fresh eyes on it and see what happens soon they come up with a new approach to prevent prospective Witnesses from comparing notes FBI agents accompanied by local investigators all on Tim Mcenroe and all the other principles in
The case at exactly the same time we didn’t want anybody jumping the gun so we had a time down to the minute they knocked on to Mcenroe’s door everybody else started interviewing their prospective person it was like a huge trap sprung at one time as a result Margaret’s husband to Person of Interest
It was on the Internet by 12 30 that Tim was named a person of interest and it was just a sigh of relief it was about Tim Mcenroe was always a person of interest from the beginning but in talking with the agents from the FBI Warren PD and our partners we decided
There was it was time to name him as the person of interest in his wife’s disappearance over the years he’s just not been that Cooperative in the investigation both of Margaret’s parents and her friend Lisa have taken and passed but Tim Mcenroe has not agreed to take
One despite repeated requests for him to do so he has repeatedly turned us down we had set that up and even offered to pay for half at the last minute he declined that polygraph I don’t know if he’s ever had an excuse on why he won’t he just backs out of him
At the same time agents are re-interviewing Mcenroe and others another ground search for Margaret is launched but nothing is found our internship is 20 square miles we have over 100 within it but there’s still some large chunks of land that are undeveloped a good portion of the town has been checked
In Mcenroe has not been charged with any crime did not return repeated calls to be interviewed for this program he continues to maintain his innocence to the police say their new initiative has reopened a dialogue dialogue’s husband we have been in contact again with Mcenroe on a more uh regular basis
He hadn’t contacted department or prosecutor’s office for quite some time but now he’s called a few times so that’s been a plus it came out of bringing the FBI in members of the Warren Police Department have known Margaret since she was a teen and socialized with her when she was a firefighter
They take a very personal interest in her case I hope that tomorrow mortar walks through the door and tells everybody she’s okay deep down in my heart I don’t believe that’s gonna happen I believe she’s a victim of Foul Play I would hope that at some point with minor remains to bring
Closure to the family Margaret would not have left them and just disappear little kids don’t have an answer as to whether I Can Only Imagine we have a luxury in our County that we don’t have these kind of things happen all the time so we have time to work on
Them so this case isn’t going to be put away we’re going to counter try to find her whatever that may bring Patrick and Eileen haddockens attend to their daughter’s Memorial and each year on the anniversary of her disappearance family and friends put up silver ribbons with Margaret’s picture on them in the hopes it might spark a lead that will help find her we hope somehow to not let
Her memory disappear we would love to be able to give her a Christian burial that would be important to us the loss of the best friend she used to talk to every day I want a body to bury redstone on so that Sarah as well as the
Other two girls know that Mommy didn’t leave I do not believe that Margaret walked away mommies don’t leave Um foreign foreign foreign
