Thank you for joining us on another episode of the corporate Cowboys podcast my name is Alex joined by my co-host Alex yeah today is Thursday March 23 2023 a little proof of life for you [ __ ] what time is it what time is it no I’m not even gonna tell them
That it could be any time of day only we do it at nine at night if y’all didn’t know uh this uh this podcast is an exercise of sorts it’s an exercise in career consultations where it helps us it allows us to uh you know go back and forth on questions that
Might come up that don’t necessarily come from our clients right but it gives you the listener a peer into what we do on a day-to-day basis for class [ __ ] right so we treat these questions coming off of sites like Reddit and quora and whatnot as hypothetical clients say they
Came into our office and Alex and I are just shooting the [ __ ] and they got a quote a quick question for us I got a quick question for you but I don’t have the money for a [ __ ] console well this is a free consult 30 minutes take it or leave it
This is coming from our slash career advice okay and they start with the subject looking to drop out of college Alex just off of uh just off the title what are you thinking yay or nay [ __ ] I say it depends my boy it depends it depends I mean me personally why are you
Dropping out of college because there may be some uh don’t stigmatize the Maliks yeah I mean you should call them a drop out just about out the cup hey you know what man hey hey uh a [ __ ] uh what’s his name was a College Dropout and Gates
It’s okay to drop out if you if you have a plan yeah it’s okay if you drop out if you have a billion dollar plan but you know a planning if they ain’t acting on it either right yeah right you know you just our book you go ahead so me
Personally I mean you say it depends but maybe because I’ve I’ve got some bad experiences with higher education I would say maybe the majority of what you’re going to be picking up in college you could probably find online already through a variety a multitude of resources that are for free right but
Maybe you want to specialize into something don’t drop out just yet consider the Alternatives consider alternate routes through higher education which Alex and I through core Capital through corporate Cowboys have pointed individuals have have mapped out pathways through Higher Education Without so much having to set foot inside of an institution yeah that’s
What I’m saying right so if it could be done without you having to sit in a class for hours at a time and then having to wait for semesters to pass by then do that but I mean don’t drop out just yet if you’re just if you’re just going
Because you don’t know what the [ __ ] to do well I’m gonna go with this general education or gonna go get a [ __ ] social sciences a Humanities degree then that’s just a waste of money don’t don’t saddle yourself with debt right and then come out come out of school bitching
About it later how you can’t Market uh what is it a gender studies degree and that [ __ ] is non-just-taught you spent four years studying dicks and vaginas and you’re over here you can’t Market that dog just get into porn yeah you know that [ __ ] is non-dischargeable my boy it ain’t non-dischargeable if
Y’all don’t know what that means man it means that like all right so you can’t get up out of under it so let me tell you something like this all right exactly exactly so like if you if some people when they get a lot of debt and
They can’t pay it back because they made a bad investment right they declare bankruptcy which is fine you know what I mean it’s not it’s not a bad thing but it is a bad thing to declare bankruptcy but it’s not the end of the world like
You might have a low credit score for a little bit but like imagine if you had uh so it affects your credit but you can bounce back as you’re saying yeah like imagine if you had a business loan right for a hundred thousand you know you charge up some credit cards for twenty
Thousand right right all of a sudden you got this balance of like 120 150 000 of debt you incurred because you were trying to do this entrepreneurship that just didn’t work it happens it happens yeah it sometimes it just doesn’t work right for various reasons well you could
Declare bankruptcy and get a lot of that [ __ ] probably discharged and and just Fresh Start so you have no debt and a bad credit score that’s right they could go back up so so after a few years you’d have to restructure your life but you can build over like you can start
Over and rebuild what you what you had once yeah and you put the space Donald Trump declared bankruptcy like seven times and the full ended up as a president probably more than that right and sometimes bankruptcy is is strategic you know what I’m saying so some people
Will still give you loans before I mean after you declare bankruptcy too that’s what people don’t understand it’s like I mean a higher interest rate for sure but but you’re gonna have to do a lot more leg work a lot more due diligence because your reputation is is going to
Be informed by this previous bankruptcy so whatever loaner whatever institution you go to right it’s going to want to see a much tighter business plan some some contingencies and whatnot exactly and and the reason why I stress that is because okay that’s a bad business decision you can bounce back from yeah
In like four or five six seven years that’s what I mean uh by the way folks if this isn’t general knowledge it’s because they don’t teach this [ __ ] in public education you we’re dropping gems right here Alex so here’s the thing about student loans student loans you and you get a you get
A four-year degree at an ivy league and and [ __ ] gender studies I don’t know [ __ ] I don’t want to harp on gender studies because gender studies isn’t the only useless one let’s say I think a mean degree is like political to science underwater basket weaving underwater basket weaves [ __ ] political science
Same [ __ ] you know what I mean right right uh and now you come out of undergrad and you don’t know what to do low paying jobs because you know you didn’t really specialize in anything too too profitable yeah or you don’t know how to Market your [ __ ] I mean there’s
Plenty of people with [ __ ] degrees who know how to Market it at least right and they don’t know how to do other things to augment that right in today’s day and age of diversity and equality like yeah you can Market your [ __ ] your degree but you ain’t gonna go far
No let’s say you at least get a job now let’s say you got 150 000 in student debt right right well and you you made a bad choice when you went to school with what you wanted to study and you and a lot of people
Figure it out later and you know I was similar unfortunately too late yeah okay but now you now you got this this [ __ ] 150 000 loan they can never be uh discharge discharged in bankruptcy meaning you can the the loan can never be forgiven uh and so if you would have
Chose to take out all that debt in a business loan you you would have been in a better position than if you would have took all that debt in student loans right right so I mean I think it’s important to understand one more thing they don’t teach in public yeah just
Just look at your options a little bit because you know student debt it it can be helpful but it can be very hurtful if you’re not if you’re not thinking strategically enough about it and there are a lot of consequences to student loans they don’t tell you about man
Exactly you see folks and that’s just the title we’re just getting started so yeah the body on this and luckily they give us a tldr and too long didn’t read right it says stay in college or drop out and pursue a music career keep going all right all right we’re
Gonna we’re gonna give them a chance here to explain themselves see if they got a tight business plan to go along with explain yourself a little Gucci so it says here hello I am 21. damn they’re young as [ __ ] and currently a college students they actually put an
Exclamation point here a college student recently I’ve been having the urge to drop out of college and pursue a career in music and become an artist well homie or fam whatever the [ __ ] prepare to prepare to to be hungry and stay hungry homie because the grind as an artist you
Don’t make too much money unless you know also how to hustle you need a [ __ ] business plan you guys suck dick for cupcakes at least once you want your cake and eat it too you’re gonna have to suck some dick suck down something I cannot balance it’s continuing I
Cannot balance both college and music at once as my studies is very demanding I think that’s miswritten as my studies is very demanding of my time and effort nothing wrong with what I’m studying ah but notice how they don’t [ __ ] tell us what they’re studying nothing wrong
With what I’m studying just the thought of working for someone for the rest of my life is what does it for me okay so who’s to say you can’t take what you’re studying and work for yourself right so I I feel like that’s true and and this might be the
The quote-unquote academic career that a lot of counselors paint for these young people is that they’re coming up out of high school right and they give them no other option but higher education and then higher education paints them no other picture than to work for the big
Man for no for for somebody else yeah right and and that’s probably what has this young person disillusioned is the fact that I got to work for somebody else the rest of my life like I want to be an artist right so they continue they say in
Saying that I have no musical background bro I have no musical background and then in parentheses I cannot play an instrument okay well that’s not bad however I have been creating Melodies on free beats and really enjoy learning throughout the process okay so they are learning something okay all right all
Right okay last paragraph here they say all in all it is an extremely small probability that I can make a living from music let alone become mainstream that’s where that sucking dick part comes in like Alex said okay however I am quite the hard worker you better be a
Good sucker and would put everything hold on would put everything to make my dream yeah they miswrote that too I probably would sell or would put out would put out everything to make my dreams become a reality okay there you go okay and then their final question
Here is what would you do in this situation well Alex you want to start well the first thing I’ll do is stop being a little [ __ ] bro like what do you mean you can’t do Music Answers at the same time hacker my studies require a lot there’s
Nothing wrong with my degree all right well then tell us what you’re studying is it is it something like you should stop bitching I don’t care what you’re sitting if you’re a full-time student you can learn [ __ ] music part-time for us you know what I mean they don’t
Make they don’t make [ __ ] college so that you’re like every week like unless you’re like okay you gotta make you got to stop making excuses for yourself first of all yeah right like if you’re gonna be a corporate Cowboy you got to be honest with yourself I mean like
Right like now there’s nothing wrong with being like a die-hard scholar or an academic right like if you’re out there pursuing and grinding like a post-doctoral or some [ __ ] like that and and and and every waking hour like Alex is saying is devoted to like oh I gotta
Go uh conduct this ethnographic study in in inner cities and [ __ ] then that’s you that is your career right you could probably sell those studies to like the military or some [ __ ] but but like Alex is saying school isn’t going to require you to to eat drink and breathe and [ __ ]
Homework yeah there’s 16 hours in a day there’s 16 hours at least in a day at least six like at least at least 16 hours in a day generous with eight hours of sleep eight hours I could run off four no problem there you go you know
What I mean if I’m if I’m really killing it and I’m really trying to grind same same four is all I need right [ __ ] I’ll do three I mean I mean for those who are like trying to trying to like go to the gym and be social and [ __ ] like okay
Maybe you need five maybe you need six okay right that’s what I’m saying it’s like because you’re 21 you’re you’re young I mean an hour in our age now I mean because we are a little older we’re not going to disclose it me personally I’m I’m sleeping six seven right because
I’m trying to eat right I’m trying to sleep right because worst comes the worst I Gotta Throw the vest on what you think I’m gonna be running on three hours of sleep let’s see but that’s Alex right yeah no I feel you I feel you guys go ahead so so I I so
You got to be honest yourself look at first before you say I can’t do school and this at the same time look at your schedule how can I be more efficient with my time first of all am I studying in a big group because if I’m studying
In a big group I’m probably not getting that much done right there’s a way to study with groups and there’s a way to study uh there’s a time to study with groups and there’s a time to study with p with by yourself it’s about efficiency yeah like you study with groups not to
Learn the material but to make sure that you understand the material that’s right right it’d be like like a walk through to to discuss the material to come up with hypotheticals together right but if you’re about uh learning and memorizing and getting that material ingrained into
Your brain that’s [ __ ] you do on your lonesome yeah and if if you’re not then you’re wasting time right and also there’s other ways to study where you’re okay you could you could study smarter instead of instead of harder uh and so I think you just need to look first of all
You need to look at your habits uh to see and your priorities like maybe you maybe you want to live a really good social life yeah go to college and play music like you can’t do all three my boy and so like yeah you’re gonna have to live broke and be a
Musician if you want a big ass social life too yeah right but but if you try to like even if you went and tried to pursue this music career and to try to keep a good social life you’re gonna be putting out some garbage music why because you’re trying to
Divide your attention to divide your your energy and your effort between trying to keep a good social life and make appearances where you don’t see somebody like J Cole out there having a a fantastic social life why because he’s dropping fire yeah right he’s trying he’s already got a
Base like you you want to just start from nothing and just be like and quit your [ __ ] exactly exactly like and here’s the thing is like you don’t have to quit your your school because it’s useless you could since you’re already in college it’s balances yeah you first
Of all you got your GE [ __ ] you have to do that’s what everybody’s got to do right but so Alex and I figure a way to get all that [ __ ] waved for real for real we working on it yo we working on it y’all but what I’m saying is is that
You can you can take you can tailor your studies to your hobbies right if you really like music and you want to be an artist what do you think could be some assets that you could that you could develop as an artist to make your to make you
Better you’re if if this person doesn’t have a background like they’re saying then they start with the with what they do happen keep in mind you don’t want to work for anybody else for the rest of your life exactly right so what do you what do you think are some skills that
You could develop in college or through classes through education Alex you you touched on it already and and really it’s the only assets that this individual has at 21 they’re young they’re energetic and what they got is time and energy they got 16 hours in a day even if they start
Part-time all right study for 15 music for one and it’s about balances from there you want to scale your music career there you go drop it to 14 study to to the music yeah but what I’m talking about is what kind of studies what kind of studies can you do to to
Really elevate or compliment your your their career path in in the music industry I mean because at this point it’s not even an affinity they got right like it’s it’s an interest and and it’s barely peaked their interest right so like it’s not like they’ve studied so
They’ve got no background even if you don’t like it later you still have these other skills but how can you tailor your skills to your hobby what you think you want to do like you want to be an artist like this dude honestly you got to take classes though what classes would you
Take to be a better artist being very being very straightforward entrepreneur artist an entrepreneurial artist you want to start with uh with with like an even introductory courses to business right oh my goodness perfect business and then obviously if you have no musical background I mean throw in some
Musical Theory there too but I’m like I’m saying a lot of like even the introductory material because you’ve got to get past the GE first [ __ ] GE even the introductory material that will dip your feet you don’t get into this work you don’t have to you can take it you
Can find online you can take an intro accounting class there you go there you go you could take and you don’t have to be an accounting expert right right but at least when when you’re when you’re [ __ ] when you’re [ __ ] business manager shoots you a [ __ ] financial report you know what they’re looking
Like you know what I’m saying you need to know the fundamental people can’t take advantage of you as an artist when you know [ __ ] right yeah so if you want to be an artist that doesn’t work for anybody else you think what would our Entre entrepreneur need to know and I
Don’t have to be an expert but if I have some breath to survive in the industry and that’s what questions to ask right you know what I mean right because it’s going to be an uphill battle for this individual if they’re going to be an independent artist which is again coming
Circling back to uh J Cole that’s how they started independent right so you don’t think they know how to how to curate beats how to write uh verses and how to manage their portfolio again you see now I’m just dropping a business term they got a whole catalog of music
That they ought to know how to not only Market but how to distribute if J Cole isn’t doing it he has folks doing it but he at least must know the fundamentals of how the industry operates why because he was for a time going against the mainstream right he was also competing
With the mainstream and J Cole might be a one in a million and our hypothetical client here is also aware of that that they’re saying here it’s a it’s an extremely small probability that I can make make a living even make a living from the music let alone become
Mainstream so put yourself in J Cole’s shoes right you want to find you want to be successful look at someone who was successful and emulate them don’t copy them right because not everybody has the blueprint even if Jay-Z did drop it right yeah hey you see I’m laces
Even if JC did drop the blueprint right you wanna see these individuals and emulate some parts some pieces of how they operate business yeah that’s it I mean and if it’s going to be it if it’s through classes that you can find because some community colleges do
Have them I don’t know if you went the four-year route at a at a more prestige a lot of small colleges will like think they think like what are some uh when I’m okay let me give you some examples of some [ __ ] I’m thinking of don’t give locations
I’m not gonna give location go ahead I’ll never give locations right on so so what I’m saying is like you you figure like okay maybe there’s some some Community College classes out there that teach about social media marketing um you know what I’m saying boom maybe there’s another one that talks about
Softwares right right computer software you you trying to learn this [ __ ] on YouTube maybe you can look for some classes that talk about the computer software so there’s so many aspects to the industry that you’re trying to enter into that you can build skills around to be successful in that industry and even
If you’re not successful as the artist you can still be successful as a corporate Man by having or no by having the knowledge the the actual technical knowledge and know-how to hire out somebody who will do it for you and not only that by by the process of being a
Professional with those skills you’re going to make connections and Network in that field beautifully said you know what I mean yeah so now you’re setting yourself up for Success instead of quitting College yeah and just being like yo I’m just gonna go full time with this music [ __ ] there you go what does
That even mean my boy now who’s to say who who’s to say that uh that they don’t graduate college right because I mean we’re telling them to stay in for the time being and pick up something that they could use right what if they do
Drop out what the f what the [ __ ] is our hypothetical client gonna do to actually feed themselves because they’re saying here that it’s extremely low possibility that they’ll make a living so what are they going to eat in the time in the meantime besides a dick well right fast
For money bro faster money but but they dropped out so so what I’m getting at is that for a time like we’re back to square one that’s what we’re saying school for the time being yeah if you don’t want to make music while you’re going to school then you then you don’t
Have the convictions my guy that that’s it point like period you drop out of school to make music what do you think you’re gonna have to have to start doing is work for somebody else yeah to to feed yourself to to buy your equipment to make this music right the best
Entrepreneurs are the ones that start off as a as a side hustle exactly so you’re gonna end up and I’m speaking to the hypothetical client you The Listener you’re gonna end up where you didn’t want to be which is working for somebody else and still having dreams and
Aspirations of making music right yeah so so pick up something worthwhile pick up this knowledge while you’ve got FAFSA coming at you but do it intelligently don’t just take on these loans and think you could get a quote-unquote easy degree because easy degrees for the most
Part are useless yeah Alex has said you want to find and supplement your music career with educational how do I say Educational Tools and assets exactly that will help multiply you as an artist help multiply your artistic uh I guess Talent yeah multiply that talent and make you some money and
I think you want to double dip you want to make you want to make decisions that will increase your assets as an artist and do things that will increase your assets as a professional that’s it you know what I’m saying that’s it um because it’s one thing to
Talk music but then when you’ve made the music then what you’ve got to [ __ ] make business next that’s that’s why you think hello artists are hella broke at the end of their careers because they don’t they don’t they let people dog them expose them they they let people
Just and then they they learn hard mistakes because they just don’t know it’s hard and they’re constantly learning how to be a professional like people who become artists really young they spend the rest of their life becoming trying to become a better professional yeah so you could just do
The opposite continue learning how to be a professional in that field and then work on becoming an artist that’s right you know what I’m saying that’s right it just you just have to be able to work hard you know what I’m saying like most most entrepreneurs are people with with
Less family or they don’t spend much time as much time with their family and you just gotta make it you just got to make a choice you know I mean you want to settle down and you want to you want to live a cool life and there is a Time
Social and have kids and a wife and [ __ ] like that or do you want to [ __ ] make this [ __ ] grind and shine make this [ __ ] happen and grind and shine you know what I’m saying there was a time when I [ __ ] around with music and I know you
Did too Alex you know what I I’ll take it upon my I’ll take it upon myself and and I got that [ __ ] and I I’ll tag you into I’ll tag you in the [ __ ] Jadakiss What come on we’ll prove it we could we’ll prove it we’ll prove it and I mean [ __ ]
We can start making music and and dropping it alongside our professional career and we can make something of it right it’s just gonna take time and if we can Market this ideal as a corporate Cowboy then possibly possibly we can take some of the market share away from
These dope boys and and these thoughts these hot girls summer [ __ ] right yeah because why because business is down to eight black businesses business is a Dying Breed business men business professionals are a Dying Breed and and unfortunately it’s not something that they teach in public education which is
Why our 21 year old hypothetical client here currently a college student exclamation point currently a college student is lost right and and that’s because they have uh they have aspirations of being free of being an artist but they don’t know the first thing about this business
Is that if you don’t take care of business it’ll swallow you up man so so take care of yourself don’t get don’t get chewed up don’t get spit out Let’s uh Alex let’s take a look at one or two of these uh one or two of these
Comments and and see what see what the other redditors are suggesting right the first one here says Do not drop out of college okay I mean a point there they say I think he’s a little too hard on it okay yeah Do not drop out of college you will regret it
Immensely I I doubt it me personally I doubt it but it is possible I mean like it depends on you know it depends on what the [ __ ] they were doing in college you’re doing a lot but good yeah just having a degree they say just having a
Degree will give you a leg up regardless of what you do even if it’s unrelated to your degree no hard disagree yeah finish the whole thing let me see let me order yes and and if you don’t finish now it will be harder to finish later also music is an incredibly difficult
Field to make it in so while possible you’re really taking a big risk here finish your degree and continue to work on your music in your spare time there you go that’s what Alex touched on once you graduate go after it knowing you always have that degree to fall back on
I mean he’s not he’s not he’s not it’s not terrible advice it’s just I think he’s he’s he sits in the cushion of of mainstream beliefs that any kind of degree is is worth uh is worth the tuition yeah and and the debt and I think let’s see this way uh
The only part the only caveat I have with it but other than that he he says some uh um you know understandable I think and tell me if I’m hitting the nail on the head here or not but what Alex first said was uh was to stay
In college right to stay in school pursue an education right using uh with coursework that you know will help you and edify you and make you a a better Hustler a more competent business professional while while you do music you just gotta nut up and [ __ ] you
Know not be a [ __ ] like you said so while while you’re doing that while you’re doing that Alex never said you should graduate right didn’t say that Alex never said you should graduate Alexander said you even needed a degree what you need is this coursework is this is this specialized knowledge that’s why
Community College in areas that you need it to help you in and you know I wanna sorry bro I don’t want you to interrupt but I think that I think you can touch on it you’re about to promote community colleges I’m all about community colleges sometimes man because like they got
These little certificate programs sometimes or even just these classes sometimes and like yeah they they may be like a little less prestigious than than your four years but you got to look at your bang for your buck there you go right are you learning how to do
Accounting at a four-year the same way you’re learning how to do accounting at at a community college I’ll do you one better I’ll do one better [ __ ] thing is your accounting certificate from a community college worth more than an underwater basket weaving degree from Yale yeah no no because with that Community Coach
Thing you could probably go out and try and get your CPA license by taking a test the only way Yale beats out is if you somehow got inducted into school and bones or some [ __ ] but that’s I mean that’s some other [ __ ] so so I mean like some of these like Community College
Classes can be good if they’re tailored in the right way like don’t go over to Community College and just because like a lot of people start taking random ass classes a lot of what they’ll do at community colleges you know what they’ll do also try to force you under that
General education they will they’ll they’ll try to funnel you right into getting your AAA degree they’ll be like we’re gonna we’re gonna get you on a plan to get you your Ada degree and you don’t really need that and if you want to transfer to a UC you’re a [ __ ]
Adult you know what classes you should be taking any kind of University in this country unless unless you want to transfer right like the requirements are not the same to transfer into a four-year College as they are to get your AAA degree so if you’re trying to
Get your AAA degree or if you’re trying to get in to a university a lot of councils will be like we’re going to push you in to get your transfer plan and then once you finish your AAA degree like congratulations Alex you got an AAA degree
And then you’d be like cool I applied to this school I’m trying to apply to this school now yeah be like not so fast buddy you did all the requirements for your AAA degree but not the trans but not the transfer some of those classes weren’t transferable they weren’t
Transferable and you’d be like well why the hell am I getting an AAA degree I don’t know it’s cool you know I don’t know because it’s cool you see that that takes that that takes more time that takes higher level planning if you need an academic advisor [ __ ] Alex and I
Would be happy to step in all right and I’ll tell you if your counseling office isn’t servicing you isn’t serving you in in how you want your future career to look like I mean all they’re worried about is really retaining you and and I think I’ve mentioned this before a lot
Of counseling offices from [ __ ] high school to Community College to to any four year go to counseling offices for the most part just serve in retaining students just retention it’s just keeping them there why because retention they’re making that money and and graduation rates graduations for AAA degrees Yeah which
If you want to get a higher degree than AAA then you don’t need an AAA it’s super unnecessary yeah um and if you if if you just want to take some classes to get a certification you don’t need a a that’s right you know what I mean that’s right so all this I’m
Saying is that your your career counselor or you’re at your [ __ ] school it may not be super like they got to be asking you the right questions exactly you know what I’m saying and probing the right the right things for you if you don’t if you don’t know if
You the students don’t know what questions to ask right then that’s when you approach a counselor and and I’m hoping I’m hoping that this counselor isn’t just out for uh the college I’m hoping this counselor is out to benefit you right I mean if you accidentally walk into a a gay bar
And nobody says you don’t say nothing to nobody eventually a guy is just going to take you bring you home and show you a good time and bend you over and you’re gonna be like do I get a degree for this eventually you’re gonna have to tell
Them no the the patch on the shoulder and be like congrats you got you got the gift you got to open your mouth and be like what’s going on my friend what’s going on oh [ __ ] no no that that is a it’s a crude analogy but it’s an
Apt analogy don’t give [ __ ] my boy it is really really don’t get [ __ ] exactly and again if you find yourself in a position I know you’re 21 you might not have resources but you want a console I mean [ __ ] our rates are more than fair they’re on a case-by-case
Basis we get it you’re not an exact unless you’re coming from like silver spoon money which in this case what you ain’t got re you ain’t got a pops you you guys have a family lawyer who could who could who could spit some game at
You we could chop it up one time I got you my boy exactly come through find us on Instagram DM us it’s at corporate Cowboys with a z right we’re on patreon subscribe to the podcast there’s multiple tiers it’s the corporate Cowboys podcast put you under my wing
