Do So first off we’re going to for some reason we’re going to go ahead and start with the rotary club and we’re going to have mr trey mcguire are you on i am great we’re going to turn if you all can spotlight trey and he’s going to give us
A little bit of information about the rotary club good morning everyone i know we have a packed agenda so i’ll move through this rather quickly i am serving as the scholarship chair for our 2022 rotary club scholarships you can go to the next slide each year um the rotary club awards
Several competitive scholarships this year we’re awarding five um to students who are in the area these awards are valued up to two thousand dollars and they’re not renewable the scholarships as i’ve stated are open to all students within ipsy community schools or the lincoln consolidated school district
They do not have to attend public school in order to be eligible for the award so this is open to students who are who attend public school private school home schooled or a school of choice within those two districts and just to show you some of the requirements um the requirements for all
Five scholarships are the same there is small differences between the various awards so the dream award um i’ll talk about first um as many of you may know gene butman was a long time ipsy business person a rotarian um and so this scholarship is one that we award
Every year um to attend a student who is attending college full-time that is a requirement for all awards is that they have to be um pursuing a college career after uh finishing high school um and their gpa for this particular award has to be at a at least a 3.0 or higher
And we’re evaluating all of our applicants for all of these awards um based off their leadership their community experience um and their future goals we can move on to the next one um the same is true for this one um again those requirements are still the same there there are very differences between
These different awards you can keep moving through them um but again we really want our suit our high school students in the area to apply for these awards these will help to alleviate some of the financial burden that many students face when entering um higher education and so we really this
Money is is we want to give it away so we want to encourage all students to apply um and the unique thing about this is through the application students are able to apply for all of these scholarships at one time so they are not submitting a different application for
The different awards we really wanted to break down some barriers and make these scholarships more accessible for our area students if you have any questions again my name is trey mcguire my email is on your screen to apply for these scholarships visit ipsyrotary.org page scholarships and all of the
Requirements and detailed information on all the awards are there thank you thank you trey so much for this information again as he noted in here you can apply for all of these scholarships at the same time that’s a very important part to that thank you at this point we’re going to get before
We get into the divine nine we want to provide a little bit of history in regards to what the divine is all about and uh we have nine historically african american organizations who are part of what we call the national panhellenic council and today we’re going to have our local president uh for
The ann arbor chapter mr stafford watts uh give us a little bit of brief information about uh the national well we call it the mphc mr watts good morning everybody it’s so good to see some so many faces that i haven’t seen in quite some time well the mphc is um our national
Um organization but we do have our chapter here in ann arbor uh we work globally together to meet the needs of the community each of the divine nine organization that’s on the car today will actually discuss what they do in their organization so i can’t take
Much time up into that i am a member of capital science fraternity ann arbor um as my senior paul mark would say we call it nuke nation so i’m always here if you guys need to reach out to me you can reach out to me um at our site at mphcaa.org
You can shoot us the email just because we are the divine line we do work with other organizations as well we do do our uh annual easter egg hunt which is a collaborative community service event as well so again if you have any questions you can reach out to us at mphca
Thank you mr watts for that introduction all right let’s get the roll call is my family ready are y’all ready all right so we’re going to start off with the first uh african-american uh greek organization return fraternity organization and at this time we’re going to have brother roberts go ahead
And introduce his organization thank you so much sister janiece and everyone good morning and thank you so much for this opportunity as you said alpha phi alpha is the first intercollegiate greek letter fraternity established by african americans it was founded on december 4th 1906 at cornell university which is actually an ivy
League institution in upstate new york locally our chapter based here in washington county is theta zeta lambda chapter and we are celebrating 60 years this year the mission of alpha phi alpha is to develop leaders promote brotherhood and academic excellence while providing service and advocacy for our communities
So you have before you some images of some well-known alphas both nationally and locally in the upper left brother john h johnson founder and publisher of jet nebulae magazines in the lower left brother thurgood marshall the first african-american to serve on the united states supreme court and of course the
Brother reverend dr martin luther king some of you may notice some of the faces or names of some of the local brothers there towards the middle right and then i also wanted to point out we have some up-and-coming brothers some younger brothers who are doing great things in our communities
Among them at the upper right brother shea carter who we are delighted to have as principal at ann arbor huron high school and below him brother michael johnson who is the principal at carpenter elementary school i should also note that this region is blessed to be the home of two other
Distinguished chapters in alpha phi alpha epsilon chapter seated at the university of michigan which is the fifth undergraduate chapter in the organization and gamma lambda chapter seated in detroit which is the third graduate chapter second slide please i wanted to talk just a bit about our programming particularly as it relates
To education so one of our four national programs is go to high school go to college which actually celebrates 100 years this year and it has many components here for us locally starting on your right we do something called the esquire leadership and mentoring program where we bring
Together young men from 6th through 12th grades one saturday each month and we talk to them about a variety of personal and professional development needs and opportunities and it’s also an opportunity for them to form community in the center we have participated in something we call the teen success summit
Along with some of our friends from other organizations you see my lovely wife martinis there in the pink and green this particular photo was taken at arbor prep school where we went out and provided a series of workshops to the young people there about how they can
Move forward in their lives and then on the left a flyer for our 25th annual student recognition luncheon which was actually held virtually last year and this is where we distribute our scholarships so if we can move to that final slide i will talk about our scholarships in 2014
Our local chapter theta zeta lambda established an endowment for scholarships and as many of you know an endowment is a permanent fund a permanent source of support in this case for scholarships and the idea is that the earnings the returns from that fund are then reinvested to generate more scholarships
And so with this great support of community and brothers and others we are now able to award this year 14 1 000 scholarships our area is primarily washed in our county although we do support seniors in other areas of southeastern michigan and if you see there those logos those represent the schools
Who had recipients of our scholarships last year i should note in particular with our scholarship we are not necessarily seeking those students who are at the top of their class we are most interested in students who are improving academically socially and personally and we also want to be sure that we are
Reaching out to students who receive free or reduced lunch so we particularly encourage those on this call to seek out those students for our scholarship the scholarship application may be found at ann arbor alphas.org and our deadline is march 25th right before spring break i just wanted to mention one final thing
The photo on the right is of the malcolm family and it really demonstrates the impact that our work can have and i’m sure the same goes for all the organizations represented here the young man you see robert malcolm attended skyline high school he was a member of our esquires leadership and mentoring
Program he was recognized at our student recognition luncheon his senior year he earned a scholarship from us he then went to morehouse college where he is still matriculating as an honor student he has earned a forty thousand dollar scholarship there from oprah winfrey and he is now exploring grad
Schools and if that weren’t enough his family having been blessed by us and the community with a scholarship has in fact more than repaid that scholarship with contributions back to us so that we can bless others service is what we’re all about and we thank you for this opportunity
Thank you brother roberts for that excellent presentation and congratulations to the local ann arbor alphas and all that you all do my nephew darius gregory was a recipient of this uh scholarship and is now a member of alpha phi elf attorney and a graduate of michigan state university and working in
Finance so yes they do a lot all right thank you so next we’re going to have uh that sister gail richardson she is the president of the local ann arbor uh alpha kappa alpha sorority incorporated chapter delta psi omega um one of my favorite uh i have a lot of favorites in
This chapter uh one in particular beverly tyler who was my school counselor at ipsilanti high school and sister tyler kept me together all right so sister richardson go ahead and do your presentation thank you thank you so much for including me and yes sister tyler has touched so many of our lives
On so many levels you can go to the next slide please alpha kappa alpha sorority is the first african-american greek letter sorority established by and for college trained women the sorority was founded in january 15 1908 at howard university in washington dc this small group of women who organized the society the sorority
Was conscious of the privileged position of college trained women of color just one generation removed from slavery you wish to know more feel free to visit aka 1908 for more information the goal of the support goals with sororities program activities center on significant issues relevant to african americans in families communities

Continent of africa we are also very proud to claim the vice president of the united states kamala harris as the first black asian female vice president of the united states ii omega was chartered the chapter was chartered on december 4th 1948 in ann arbor michigan since that time our talented dedicated
Visionary and diverse membership has carried on the alpha kappa alpha sorority incorporated tradition of providing supreme service to all mankind our focus is supporting people in washington county we also are connected to the nine there are nine alpha afrika alpha chapters in southeastern michigan we call ourselves
The metro nine and we work together to provide lots and lots of service to the entire southeastern michigan area through our international programs we are dedicated to achieving the goals of the sorority which focus on being of service to our community and to strengthen interactions with each other the current international program
Is exemplifying excellence through sustainable service it includes five target areas what number one is hbcu for life a call to action we’re very proud to have raised two million dollars in one day to support hbcus across the country as well as a million dollars every year for the
Last four years to provide endowments to as many hbcus as we possibly could we also work on women’s healthcare and wellness for ourselves as well as for the community providing breast cancer awareness issues and mammograms we are we believe in building your economic legacy one of the flaws that
We’ve discovered over time is that we as african-americans don’t often leave legacy of finances for our children and we’re trying to learn how to do that better we also like to celebrate the arts as many of you know some of the most important parts for some kids in school
Is the arts and we try to build on that program and we we also work for global impact we don’t just focus on the united states we provide services to especially to refugees in the last four years but to countries across the country we also have a signature program called hashtag
Cap which stands for college application process anyone who’s had a child try to get ready to go to college knows how complex that process is and this program was designed to help them i must admit over the last year or so it’s been really hard with the pandemic but we’ve
Made sort of a visual connection with those young people who are currently high school students anywhere in washington county our sororities events our main events are celebration of black men and young men of promise where we recognize both black men who are doing outstanding things in the community and young men
Who we anticipate we’ll continue to do great things in the community we also have a fundraiser primary fundraiser jeans jewels and jams sponsored by our foundation um and then we’ve scheduled we we are tentatively scheduled for uh may but we’ll see what happens uh we also partner with other
Organizations in the area including the ann arbor alumni chapter of delta sigma theta and the ann arbor chapter of the lynx on take your daughters and sons to work to give young people an opportunity to hear various issues that are relevant to them and their future also we’ve collaborated with the ann
Arbor my chapter delta sigma theta sorority with the what’s next social action series to get to know what’s going on with politics in our state primarily we supervise two undergraduate chapters of which we are very proud one is beta ada which is at the university of michigan the other is sigma zeta which
Is at albion college the undergrads join us for our participation in community service activities like the longest day walk to support alzheimer’s disease scholarships we too find fundamentally that our main goal is to help young people attend college if they choose or schools of higher learning after high
School over 200 scholarships have been awarded to young people of washington county beginning in 2016 a scholarship for a student attending an hvcu was implemented check our website for news and upcoming events aka deltacyomega.org because we will be again presenting these scholarships although the pandemic has helped us
Learn how to pivot and figure out other ways to get that job done but they are still available thank you so much and i’m glad to participate and see all of my i’m so proud of all my brown faces on this view thank you thank you such a sister richardson for

To give you a quick and brief history and let you know some of the things that sigma road chapter is doing uh omega scifi fraternity incorporated was founded november 17th 1911 on the campus of howard university on the third floor of the science center currently known as third kill hall
We had three visionary undergraduate students known as the three musketeers which became professor frank coleman dr oxford james cooper and bishop edgar and ms love they were supported by a graduate advisor who was dr ernest everett just we were founded under the principles of manhood scholarship perseverance and
Uplift we were the first black fraternity to be founded on a hbcu and just a quick note omega side five fraternity charted the first divine nine chapter in china in 2018 under the name of kai munu and they’re in shanghai uh we were very pleased with that
Because one of our brothers uh paige williams was the basilisk of that chapter and had a very large impact in helping to uh start that chapter uh sigma rho chapter was founded in 1964 by our 16 charter members who were led by uh sidney l moore who will become our first baseless
We serve the greater ann arbor ipsulani uh community for over 55 years when we’re not in uh kovac protocol we meet at the ann arbor community center we are obligated under international rules to uh have uh mandated programs which include our achievement week social action programs college endowment naacp calling hunt scholarship voter
Registration education and mobilization as well as health initiatives uh one of the things that i’m very proud of is our health initiatives uh along with the uh rural council council center and uh sister townsend we uh we have uh put on uh help uh men’s health programs
Uh the last one we had uh dr david marion was there and uh he’s also the uh president current president of the mphc so we do a lot of things another thing that we did doing during the year was we uh provided 150 uh complete hats coats scars and gloves
To the ipsilanti community centers uh some of their needy uh students we also provided uh food baskets and another thing that i’m very proud of was shopping with the cues in which we again partnered with the uh insanity community uh schools and we also uh took 30 students
Along with in collaboration with uh myers uh gave them 100 each 30 students and let them have a shopping spree for christmas uh next slide please so what i really like to talk about is our we are entering our current scholarship uh programs and one of our first ones is this uh small
Fight which is southeast michigan omega foundation incorporated and uh since 2001 we’ve uh provided 82 scholarships for over 30 300 000 we’ve just recently raised our uh scholarships to six thousand dollars from five thousand dollars and they are passed out in increments of uh fifteen hundred dollars of a four four-year period
This year the applications uh must be emailed the deadline date is april 15 2022. uh the applications can be downloaded at www.smofi.org under programs when you go to the website it will be under programs uh this is strictly for uh african american male seniors who attend high school in southeast
Michigan uh sigma rho will provide two six thousand dollar skills for a total of twelve we actually cover uh wayne washington oakland and macomb counties so each one of those uh counties will each receive uh two scholarships a piece the uh requirements are below uh 2.75 grade point average four-year college university accredited
Uh demonstrate a good character and possess evidence of leadership ability as well as they will have to write a essay the next one i’d like to talk about is the sigma raw 2022 virtual talent hunt uh this talent hunt is one of several national programs designed to identify
The and support the youth of our nation and the world this original idea was created by our ninth grand basilisk brother j austin atkins of winston-salem north carolina and it provided a platform for african-american youth to exhibit their talents which during the time period they weren’t allowed that opportunity
So with that being said our apple uh scholarship talent hunt this year is uh first prize will be six hundred dollars uh second prize will be 300 and our third prize will be 150 it will be all virtual uh next slide please oh i went back i’m sorry

Get straight to the point we appreciate you all right so we’re going to be talking about the home squad for my favorite organization zeta phi beta sorority incorporated we have been in existence for 102 years and our principles are scholarship service sisterhood and final womanhood if you want more information about zeta phi
Beta sorority incorporated you can visit us at wwz5b1920.org just a brief her story we put a little spin on it we were founded january 16 1920 on the campus of howard university in washington dc by five co-eds who we refer to as our pearls uh arizona ladonna cleaver stemmons and pearl anna
Neil fanny petty watts viola tyler and myrtle tyler the women dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for african-american women and sought to establish a new organization and again our was our scholarship service sisterhood and final womanhood and we’ve blazed trails and different many things a lot
Of your members of zeta phi beta are in education we’re social workers business uh health science whatever it is zeta does it we are every woman so just keep that in mind um we have over 600 chapters located in domestic u.s west africa germany bahama islands dubai virgin
Islands japan south korea and italy the we are the first of many so we want to make sure that we know just like you had brother dana talk about uh the omegas we gonna talk about zeta zeta was the first to be the greek letter organization to charter a chapter in
Africa we are the first to form adult and youth auxiliary groups which are mekai arcanettes amicas and pearles so when we say that we go from girls to pearls we literally mean that we recognize that there are plenty of uh women in the community who have not necessarily received a four-year degree
But they have the desire to serve and so we created the amica which refer to as our friends uh that also helps support uh the organization and its goals and initiatives and we are the only now everybody say you know we we had this little banter everybody say
They brothers and sisters but zeta phi beta sorority and phi beta sigma we have it on our birth certificate honey so i just want y’all to know that when we say we are the blue and white we are the blue and white family ain’t that right brother hayes yes z5
You know all right so road delta zeta chapter of washington county was charted on april 25th 1998 at the great lakes regional uh conference at the westin hotel in detroit our charter members are s joy games who is a well-known attorney in the washington county area laurie d goss um
I got theresa k myers aj read reed janessa sumter and margaret taylor um and we foster and we’re committed in fostering promoting the sorority ideas of final womanhood scholarship service and sisterhood and we incorporate these ideas through everything that we do here’s just a couple of few pictures but i want to be
I want to be clear about a couple of things we understand that kovit set us back but zeta definitely pivoted very well we were still out here marching doing black lives matter we were still out here handing out uh mass and uh covet kit testing kits we are out
Here uh still serving our communities and a lot of our members on our local chapters serve myself i serve on the ipsiland community school board our president uh linda edwards brown is a trustee of pittsfield township as well as a professor at u of m and eastern yes she
Is that smart and we have a lot of other people so taryn willis who is working with me uh with a lot of projects with the school crystal campbell who you’ll hear from later today and so we’re very proud of the members that we have they
Work in all areas so if you need some help i’m pretty sure if you look to the sky and see the blue and white that paula zeta will get it done alrighty so why we are here today uh as we mentioned uh one of the charter members for
Uh zeta phi vader’s uh road delta zeta chapter is margaret ann taylor and uh she unfortunately passed in 2000 and uh we wanted to make sure that we want to fulfill her legacy she was a graduate of benton harbor high school she later received her juris doctorate at wayne state university is a
Graduate of university of michigan got her undergraduate at university of michigan and came through the gamma delta chapter our chapter we oversee the undergraduate chapter at eastern michigan university pie delta and she was just this pillar of the community and we wanted to make sure that we
Continued that legacy and so we offer scholarships each year to an african-american female student who attends a school within washington county as well as her home high school or benton harbor high school and so one of the requirements is you have to complete a 500 essay have a minimum gpa of a 2.8

First principle is scholarship we also on a national level offer several different other scholarships we have a founder centennial scholarship this scholarship is a hundred thousand dollars it’s for a female uh high school senior who qualifies for free or reduced lunch doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be
Having free taking advantage of it but you at least qualify uh you graduate in may or june of 2022 have a gpa of 3.0 demonstrate a financial need that you are active in the community and that you are affiliated with any member of zeta phi beta sorority so again that means if

Here that’s all well over 100 uh thousand dollars in scholarships that are offered by zeta phi beta sorority now we’re going to have the beautiful sisters of sigma gamma rose sorority incorporated we have a sister legrand are you ready yes i’m ready all right thank you hello everyone i’m very honored and
Happy to be here with you all um as you all know that um sigma gamma rho is the um youngest um sorority of the mph i’m sorry youngest sorority of the d9 and we have recently just reactivated our ann arbor alumni chapter so i’m really happy that i was able to connect
Um with sister um denise so that i could be a part of this program you all have to forgive me i’m not really good at speaking through a box so um bear with me um sigma gamma rho sorority was founded november 12 1922 at butler university in indianapolis in indiana
We have over a hundred thousand members and we’re in five regions central is the heart of sigma gamma rho because we were the sorority was founded in central region we have the northeast region southeast region southwestern and western regions we have over 500 chapters in the u.s bahamas bermuda belize
Us virgin islands canada germany south korea and the uae we also just recently chartered a chapter in dubai some key things about us or some things that a lot of people probably don’t know is that sigma gamma rho is the only nphc that was charted as a professional organization
Um and that we are the um only mphc sorority founded in a predominantly white institution on butler university campus next slide the zeta zeta zeta sigma is the ann arbor alumni chapter we reactivated december 9 2021. um it is our goal to serve all of washtenaw county um we um we’re um
Our members our charter members have over 50 plus years of combined service in the sorority we have two life members and what we call a ruby member which is 22 years or more in the organization um right now we’re in the process of building up our website
Um but we do have an instagram page it’s dzs poodles so please follow us um so that we can keep you apprised on all of the things that we’re doing locally um our chapter has a lot of goals and plans for the community and i’m so excited
Listening to all my brothers and brother and sister organizations because i’m i’m really hoping that we can partner with you guys for some of our initiatives some of the initiatives that we are really truly excited about is our swim 1922 um national initiative where we um are trying to combat drowning um
Most african-americans don’t know how to swim and we want to change that we want to encourage african-americans to not be afraid of the water and the practice water safety so it’s our hope that we can do a couple of clinics at our local pools like the rutherford pool and also i know that
Um like esther brook has well they used to have a pool i don’t know what’s been happening since covet but we would love to do some clinics there um and just promote safe water safety we really would like to um establish a couple of programs in high schools one
Of our signature programs that we’re establishing will be a prom send-off and we’re really excited about that one as well um i’m a girl scout i you know it’s in my blood so um we really want to partner with um the washington county girl scouts and to support them
Um in their good cookie drives or even possibly you know support on some of the local chapters um thank you excellent so one of the reasons why i’m here is to talk about scholarship locally we do not have a scholarship but i’m really excited because i don’t know
If you guys noticed the date but we were established in 1922 and so we are celebrating our centennial centennial year this year and we are really excited about it we’re planning the park to paint um indianapolis royal blue and gold and i’m hoping to see some
Of our brother and sister orgs there to help us to celebrate but one of the things that we wanted to do because um it is really important to us that we um do something big for centennial but we also want to make sure that we continue to educate our young people and to
Provide them with with the um the funding that they need to continue their education and go to college we have set up a centennial centennial scholarship and on the scholarship is in partnership with our national education fund and we’re going to offer 25 10 000 scholarships for our past presidents or our grand
Basili this is for anyone each scholarship is a one-time award and applicant um you know it sounds like with everybody else they have to be incoming freshmen or they can be continuing or transferring students from an accredited two-year university to a four-year university and they have to be enrolled full-time and we’re also
Offering this to undergrad and graduates grad graduate people studying and um there is a minimum gpa of 2.5 and um oh i’m sorry i just blanked out there and the application um you know high school transcript three letters of recommendation a financial aid award letter professional headshot college and university accepts acceptance letter
School address and your school id and um i just want to say that one of the things that sigma gamma rho is really about is supporting um women and children to have a better life so we also have a couple of stem programs that we’re working on um we’ve um we have affiliates
From the babies to high school students um we have the rowers who are age five to eight we have the i mean i’m sorry we have the rosebuds who are aged five to eight and then we have the rowers who are um age um um i’m sorry

Americans were freed from slavery black women had started to come together to create organizations we looked at which looked after their communities welfare black women were very quick to organize themselves for self-help one of the first african-american women’s club started in philadelphia in 1793. in salem massachusetts there was one
Creating 18 etc so black women’s clubs helped to raise money for the anti-slavery newspaper the north star that probably many of you have heard of many black churches owed their existence to their to the dedicated work of african-american women organizing in their communities black women’s literary
Clubs began to show up as early as 1831. so after slavery was ended in the united states with ratification of the 13 13th amendment in 1865 black women continued to organize and often worked with churches to ensure communities were well taken care of the club movement for black women in the
1890s began to focus on social and political reform and were more secular black women had to face the same issues as white women during this period but were often excluded from services and help that benefited whites only black women were not only excluded from the white clubs were often excluded from clubs um
Created by black men as well in addition many black women felt as though they were defying the stereotypes of their communities women’s clubs allowed them to combat those stereotypes during that period being a member of a women’s club also helped give black women greater social standing in their communities in
1896 the national association of women’s clubs was founded anti-lynching campaigns provoked the president of the missouri press association who viciously attacked black women in in a letter that was widely circulated amongst women’s clubs by josephine st pierre-ruffa in 1895 james w jacks president of the missouri press association received a
Letter from florence bill garney of the english anti-lynching league asking american journalists to help battle lynching his response the negroes in this community the negroes in this country are wholly devoid of morality they know nothing of it except they learn by being caught for flagrant violations of law and punished
Therefore they consider it no disgrace but rather an honor to be sent to prison and to wear stripes clothes the women are prostitutes and all natural liars and thieves the effect of this letter catapulted black women into action and a national call to confer was sent out by josephine st pierre ruffin
In 1896 the in washington dc she is quoted to call everyone together to have a conversation about things that were of special interest to our community including training our children uh preparing for difficult conditions and to come together to protect all our families we have membership that includes women
In uh and youth in 32 states dedicated to raising the standard of the home moral standards and the civic life of the african-american race ruffin eventually helped bring together the nacwc using that letter as a call to action women’s organizations led by women like harriet tubman helen apple cook
Sojourner truth anna duke anna julia cooper and josephine saint pierre ruffin along with so many unnamed as well as ida b wells and her red record that uh was a documentation of the lynching of black americans um were amongst the first women actually to

Mary’s lodge number four our masons uh do we have uh brother baird available yes sir i’m here can you hear me all right yes i came here all right so getting started here again want to say thank you so much for inviting and allowing us to be able to speak here um
So first just giving a brief history really quickly um of saint mary’s launch number four uh we are uh the third uh oldest lodge here in in michigan we was actually charted in january 19th uh in 1867 and what we specifically focus on is self development as well as developing
Of the community and so some of our members in the area of asu included judges attorneys and educators and servant leaders of washington county and so you know the next slide and then here’s a couple of the events and programs that we’ve done um just to
Kind of walk through like some of the services we do for the organization and give a little bit of a background about uh prince hall masonry as a whole is we are the world’s largest and oldest predominantly black um our african-american uh fraternity and so we were basically initiated
Chartered uh in september of 1784 uh and one of our main founders was prince hall who we now take the name of and there was 14 other members uh down the road that came into insistence here with it and so throughout history uh we’ve been intertwined in black history um a little
Something a little tidbit here just to act i know everyone’s adding their things and it’s um for the divine nine at least for the fraternities at least one founder of every divine knight was a member of a masonic organization and actually our most honorable founder for five minutes
Sigma a langston taylor and the founder uh uh i will brother frank coleman of omega psi five was actually in the same lodge in pythagoras number nine uh in dc so just some interesting tidbits and facts and so for the interest of time we’ll speak about the scholarships and what we
Do is for the grand lodge michigan we have a couple scholarship programs that work out where we have one that’s a reoccurring one that’s a thousand dollars for a person going to a four-year scholarship four-year degree then we have another one for if you’re going to community college and then we
Do have a scholarship too as well for individuals who are going to do a trade um to be able to assist them um in addition to that we do have another scholarship for the michigan council of deliberation which is the scottish rite masons which is another subject of our
Organization uh and they have the same type of structure as well which you’ll be able to be able to find that on our facebook page and our websites here um so again i i thank you so much for the time and opportunity for for allowing us to speak and um
Again uh go mob to my my friends that’s what i’m calling to the swords yeah how you doing so we we’re gonna have the family uh reunion later okay all right next we’re gonna have the naomi chapter number 12 of the order of the eastern star my sore roar
Crystal campbell will go ahead and give this presentation sarah campbell hey there good afternoon good afternoon to the island rotary chapter good afternoon so uh ifs atlantic community schools hey scholars i hope that we have some students uh who are joining the space today um and good afternoon to all
Of the uh all the folks who are presented today there’s some really amazing history i bring you greetings from naomi chapter number 12 order of the eastern star prince hall affiliated jurisdiction of michigan we have been quietly and humbly serving here in ann arbor michigan since 1918.
So just a little bit of prince hall history i’m not going to go through all of it in the interest of time what you should know is that our colors are blue yellow white green and red in that order um and you’ll see that all of the other organizations that are presented here
Also uh represent those colors prince hall order of eastern star was chartered and organized on december 1st in 1874 like so many of the other divine knight organizations we were also chartered in washington dc quick fact the order of the eastern star was a predominantly white organization
That was actually founded in 1850 so 1874 is the date for prince hall or predominantly black eastern star uh 1850 is the date for eastern star in general it was originally for the daughters widows wives sisters mothers of master masons but we’ve since extended that membership
Um and then i would be remiss not to mention our presiding officers kiana and cowan and brian l david uh johnson served as the grand matron and grand patron for the state of michigan and then sherry pritchard and the incomparable tyrone hampton served as the matron and patron for naomi chapter
Uh in ann arbor this is just a little bit about a naomi chapter in the service that we do our chapter was chartered on july 17th 1918 so this year marks 104 years of humble and silent service here in ann arbor um saint mary’s lodge number four
Stephen beer said those are our brothers we are really excited to serve with them in the area you can move to the next slide and the reason that we’re here today naomi chapter offers uh book scholarships and we do this every year this year scholarship is open to any
2021 or 22 graduate because we understand we’ve been in a pandemic right everyone didn’t have the opportunity to access official uh transcripts and other information that was needed last year all you need to do is to be a student who attended high school in washington
County the deadline is may 1st we have a very simple and accessible and equitable application we need two letters of recommendation in your official transcripts the uh chairperson for the naomi scholarship is crayola larkin who is the number two in charge at naomi chapter and her email is listed there
You can move to the next slide and then the prince hall grand chapter who is our presiding body unlike some of the other organizations each state of uh eastern star and masonry is sovereign that means they they get to set their own policies rules and regulations and
So the state of michigan is called the prince hall grant chapter i’m the chairperson of the agnes fairfax bristol scholarship is named for a very active sister and principal grand chapter every year we award to one student it is 500 per year for four years so you’re
Earning a total of two thousand dollars over the course of your college education um we require an official transcript and we allow folks that are not just those folks that are going to a four-year college or university if you’re going to a community college if you’re entering into a trade school
We just want to help support students that are looking to advance their education two letters of recommendation the deadline is july 1st and the email uh to get more information is listed there it’s been a pleasure to serve it’s a pleasure to be on this program today i
Know we’re at the end of our time z5 to all muscle roars blue fly to all my frat you all have a great afternoon thank you so much sister campbell for giving that information we’re going to go ahead and go over to the ann arbor club of the national association of
Negro business and professional women’s club inc uh ms curry are you available yeah ready yes i’m ready um good afternoon everyone um thank you for um inviting me on behalf of the ann arbor club of the national association of negro business and professional women’s clubs incorporated our mission is to promote and protect

James hawkins who’s also a member of kappa alpha psi fraternity incorporated but it was reestablished in 2007 as a non-profit with four main pillars and the main pillar that i want to focus on today is the recognition of students who work to their highest potential in the form of awarding scholarships and grants
