[Applause] evidently you’re supposed to put on the top hat okay oh I’m not putting on the top hat what and then this is the pretend goat that we have to ride I don’t know if anybody can see that it’s weird that it comes with green
Beans this is a strange game uh the game is called build and it’s a it’s a masonic game we’re going to do an unboxing and uh attempt to play the game I think these are it says here you can only have three Past Masters play this game oh geez
They’ll never get anything done yeah uh is that that’s Elsa from fro I think we got some pieces from other games in here all right well we we’re going to play this game in just a minute on the Scottish R of Freemasonry Channel welcome to the Scottish WR of Freemasonry Channel I’m mayard Edwards 33rd degree along with brother Chris Ry historian and author 32nd degree KC and we have build it is a m I guess I don’t know I you I think it was you yes put this on a Facebook post
That I saw right and you were asking if anybody could find it so I tracked it down on eBay the Grand Lodge of DC has a copy in their Museum I think it’s not even open well I’m going to donate this to the Scottish R Museum after we
Attempt to uh unbox and play it the game is called build it is a you found this on eBay I found this on eBay I won’t even tell you what you I’m not even going to say I’m not even going to say out loud uh it’s a masonic game for the
Entire family it says build is a game for the family explores the meaning and message of Freemasonry the world’s oldest and largest fraternity just as stonemasons built of old built the Great Cathedrals with care and skill today’s Masons are committed to building human life with the values of Brotherhood
Justice and Clarity and now here’s something I didn’t notice when I because I I really I have not touched this since it came uh you see who it’s by White Hall games and the Supreme Council 33rd degree for the Supreme Council yeah of uh this is this was built by the nmj the
Northern masan jurisdiction I guess I should say uh 1980 so I wonder if it was just a partnership yeah I’m sure somebody approached them and said hey you know check this out this will be fun and somebody said why not so not a Milton Bradley game no it does it is not
Parker Brothers in B did not produce this so uh all right let’s go let’s open it up you’re the historian how do we proceed you P very carefully and you paid all that money so you get the benefit of opening them but I mean this is a masonic
Artifact we’ll do the unb this is a masonic artifact therefore we should throw it in a dirty closet for 30 years okay so here appears to be a Bo that looks like the main Bo board y it is trying to make sure our overhead camera catches everything there’s the
Instructions okay oh look it’s just two pages that’s helpful yeah two to four players okay so we have enough players oh here read that that’s a little thank you note from uh wear with pride the American way this is a charity Sovereign Grand Commander Francis Paul 33rd degree
It must have come with like a little American flag pen oh there’s an envelope there there you go yeah so if oh it’s a donation oh okay $7.50 what was the donation amount go back please send me oh you can purchase it for okay so it’s was s bucks
$7.50 okay thank you for your generous gift yeah it’s a little show that up on the camera there what’s this what is that is that a second oh I see so you get your own uh everybody must get their own game board okay oh boy there’s all these little
Tiles there all right so we got four game so I guess little white aprons four is that four players I guess yes looks like it’s four players four Trestle board oh see these are Trestle boards yes I like that they’re tilted up that’s going to be handy yeah and then um the
Sword’s got the inst so let’s put this up there for looks like there are blue cards here okay it’s the Beehive hourglass okay so these are all symbols looks like things that a Mason may know about um interestingly they’re telling you what it means so well I mean a lot
Of people some of those in like for instance here the Beehive indicates no one should ever be idle especially when we can help our fellow Men by exerting a little effort uh donate two stones to the player on your right so um okay so I
Guess these are then going to be the and we We’re Men we’re not going to read the instructions we’re just going to make some assumptions and then move forward that’s what we do um this is uh so uh these look like the stones and I guess
The cards tell you how many stones to get oh look I knew it there’s a little American flag pin and this thing is totally complete the little American flag pin you got a full set here yeah oh it’s got a little it’s got the double-headed eag of the nmj on there
Nice that’s cool that might be a collector’s item absolutely I’m just shuffling this maybe I shouldn’t be shuffling I’m just going to do it cuz that’s what it seems like you should a generation of board games have taught me to shuffle cards so this will be your
Trestle board this will be mine all right where to begin determine who will start so I ass the older pass master gets to start uh introduction the origins of Freemasonry reach back to Medieval Times the great cathedrals of Europe were built yada yada y all that stuff we know
Freemasonry has an outstanding record for helping others y y we know what the building of life is never finished whether it is an individual’s life or the needs of society there’s always more to be done the game of build expresses the Freemason deep commitment to the
Task of building so just looking at this I’m guessing you start as a rough ashler and you try and collect squares until you get the perfect ashler yeah so um object of the game to complete the building on your Trestle board From the Rough ashler to the perfect ashler
Perfect ashler which as a past master I will tell you uh you will never be able to actually accomplish you’re always working to chip away at the proverbial rough ashler and we are two of the roughest you know the winner is the first player to compete building the
Perfect ashler position in the game the rough ashler is the first stone to be set in place the perfect ashler cannot be used until so the rough ashler I guess that’s one of these here little cards little bitty ones should I organize those I I maybe I don’t know if
We need to or or not the the okay like maybe I should put these in one p before you start each per each player takes a Trestle board which we’ve done that and a rough ashler so we need to you need to get one of those and I guess we got my
Rough ashler put it right in there you put it in there so you get a free spot yeah okay blue tiles not black tiles no black and white tiles I really expected there yeah they missed an opportunity on that you know maybe maybe there’s something in here that you know look
Jumping to conclusion Ard Apprentice stones are only used for building the enter Apprentice section gold Stones entitle you to draw another Stone and are used to building the fellowcraft and Master Mason sections blue stones require you to draw a blue card and are used in the fellowcraft and Master Mason
Sections gravestones are used in the building and the F so the each of these different things um the apron is used in one position only so you have to get an apron so um when less than four people play remove their remaining rough ashlers okay how to begin determine who
Will start so we’ve already determined the older pass master starts the first player draws a stone shut up back in my day I used first player draws a stone from the Quarry so what the heck is the Quarry so I guess that’s the Quarry um
So I guess we got to put them all face down or oh place all the other Stones face down in the middle of the playing area so you’re right so we got to mix them up we got to put them face down hold on we’ll put in the Hat oh good
Call yeah all right we’ll put them all in there um so if you draw a gold stone then you put your rough ashler in position and place the gold stone in your own pile beside your board you’re not allowed to draw another Stone on this turn all other gold Stones entitle
You to draw another Gold Stone from the Quarry if you draw a perfect ashler you must return it immediately to the Quarry and conclude your turn and that happens until you become a Master Mason if you draw a blue stone you place it in your
Own pile so then you keep that and you follow in instructions on the card if you draw an Entered Apprentice Stone or a gry Stone Place the stone in your own pile beside your board each player draws one stone after three turns if you’ve not drawn a gold stone you may then
Place the rough ashler in position on your next turn instead of drawing a stone from the Quarry so basically you draw until you get a gold stone okay and then once you get a gold stone you can place your rough ashler okay now after your rough ashers in position you may
Then proceed to build on each each turn continue to draw one stone from the Quarry only an Entered Apprentice Stone may be placed on the board at the time all the other stones are just placed in a pile beside your board and cannot be used in your building unless a blue card
Instructs you to do so okay don’t forget to draw another piece whenever you draw a gold stone and draw a blue card whenever you draw a blue stone after completing your work as an Entered Apprentice so we have to fill in all of this first yep um uh if you do
Not have an apron in your pile you may not proceed further so if you have drawn an apron then you can proceed so you draw an apron and you leave it on the side until you get to that point correct got it okay and then once you um once
You draw an apron uh then you can start uh then you have to complete your fellow craft and I feel like this is going to take a long time fine well let’s give it a shot all right you want to read a few more of the
Cards just for the heck of it or up to you yeah read read a couple just and then we’ll make you’ve shuffled them good we can Shuffle those to the bottom so we read I think we did five orders of architecture interesting just as there are many ways to construct a building
There are many plans a man may follow in building his life so I feel like what happens is sometimes they add these little you know philosophical or moral quips to the card and then there’s an action draw two stones okay cool uh let’s see what else Acacia spring of
ACAA points to immortality neat Trestle board so there’s some good cards here most of them have an action some some of them are just plain right so it just says remove one stone from your building and return it to a pile these are sort of uh you know negative things that happen
Repercussions okay I think we should just let’s give it a shot call now all right so you don’t have so that’s not so what we need we have to pick a gold stone to get the rough ashler so I’ll go first okay into the past Master’s hat I
Cannot see so I got a blue stone so that means I got to pull a blue card I place this in the pile select one stone from each player’s pile place it directly on your building if you’re able well I can’t do that because
All you have is the rough ashler so I do nothing and I get well let’s put the discards over okay cool your Turner so I want to draw a gold card MH nothing so you just keep that there oh there’s my gold one I get to place my rough ashler
Now I would normally when I draw a gold one I get to go again but I don’t get to this time it’s the rough Ash because it’s the rough Ash so you started your way you’re on you got yourself a rough ashler congratulations nope just got an
ENT Prentice so I’m going to leave that there I guess I’m not doing [Applause] much Top Hat was perfect good call blank Stone okay okay ah all right got my gold you’re in I’m in I’m a rough welcome to the craft brother Chris I I got to tell you I’m
Very excited so now we have to get enter Apprentice ones to put it here we’ve got to find ENT now I have have one can I put my put one in no only if the blue card directs you to do so O Okay so okay now I got another blue blue
Card oh look at that okay the perfect ashler is a smooth Stone symbolizing the educated man draw two stones from the glory two extra Stones I’m a symbol I’m an educated man that’s right oh I can keep that for later oh is that in order to get to Master Mason mhm look at
That oh another due to poor workmanship you must take down your pill your building remove all the stones of an incomplete section return to the quar I love that’s brutal that doesn’t hurt me because I don’t really have anything built there but yeah could you imagine if you were like
Up here super close terrible workmanship means you get to immediately draw another baby boy enter oh yeah that way you’re in you’re in bro so I can put one in yeah you’re in okay you’re building I’m I’m going to start at the what is it the northeast
Corner noreast corner do all right there you go in the northeast corner look at that approximately 10 hours later donate your time to charity let the player from your left select a stone from your pile I just need a regular old uh you’re getting close look at you go ahead what we
Got they kind of bunch up in the corner of the Top Hat Man perfect ashler the perfect as it’s a drawing towards you man blue makes sense R rough ashler if you are an enter Apprentice I am not take another turn if you’re a fellowcraft draw Three Stones no that fills you out
Dose is that that I’ll put that Perfect Ash back so you get another one because you had a gold one oh we need stones oh wait a minute oh you can do that no you’re one short I’m one short man okay we need more Stone I’m going to
Throw that guy back in there and I’m I’m going throw all my uh there you go thank you throw all my squares and Compasses in there hopefully get you go get yourself a gold it’s a gold all right go get yourself another gold this is going to be amazing if you
Draw a perfect ashler what’s going to be amazing is if I like this is one of those ones that says like take 20 stones off your board the biggest one was the 10 and I already got hit with that remove two stones from your building and
Return to the okay I to put those two golds in there see what they need to do is they make those are just like penalties they and the one said okay your building caught fire but one should be like uh you failed a catechism put five Stones back or something like that
There you go but still those are pretty easy to reacquire you know right blue take three stones from your pile Oh you’re in have you got a square ENC compass in there I do not are you kidding me oh I did not they were all in
There oh it tempts you the fates tempt you all right gold no no gold I draw another blue all right here we go I I am terrified the Holy Bible contains the truth that all Freemasons should seek draw four stones from the Quarry hold on
This is it this is the game the whole Bible gives you the game well towards the end here that is a sentence I boom there’s the game I am the perfect ashler and you know in a very symbolic way the Holy Bible it’s that’s a nice uh
Way a good way to end it that’s right very good all right all things considered All Things Considered it’s not a bad game it’s actually not bad it was actually kind of fun I mean I don’t know that I’d want to play it a bunch of
Times like I don’t know that it’s it’s endlessly replayable but like if you’re sitting around with a bunch of you guys at the lodge and you know having a couple of drinks and just hanging out after a meeting or something like that because it does you know it and you know
What it does it actually Spurs discussion and it does it does what it take us Just sh of an hour really yeah not not that bad no it was a lot of it was it was entertaining um the I do like the symbolism on the cards um I I I
Guess with more people it might go faster but because you run out of cards faster yeah yeah yeah yeah overall though not bad not terrible no no it was entertaining um to a degree uh but yeah so you said the grand loga DC has
One of these in the grand L DC has a copy I I think it was still in its wrapping what they originally they charged um I think they were for donation of $7 and that that seems pretty cheap even for early 80s I mean what is that that’s probably 20 bucks
I’m sure all right the game is called build got it on eBay you can probably find a copy uh it I I got it because I wanted to do this video with it and Chris and I wanted to to do this game but um it turned out to be I wouldn’t I
Wouldn’t pay what I pay for it because that’s dumb but um uh like I said I wanted to do it for the content well if you’re a masonic collector of things Anda and you know right right right KY kind of stuff you might enjoy it yeah
This I mean talk about pop culture and Freemasonry coll in this is definitely it so um I I like the little blue blue cards were definitely my favorite part of it um yeah I feel like more P it has the right amount of penalties because um too many more penalties it
There’s already a little bit of a frustration element built into the game um but I lost 20 cards that game 20 stones in that game and I was unable to recover so thank you guys for watching uh and please don’t forget to check out the Lost media archive and if you want to
