[theme song] just a couple of silly friends talking about serious stuff hello welcome back to two friends react I’m Enough and I’m Edward welcome back and as you might have noticed by the thumbnail today we’re watching Legally Blonde
Yeah I decided to uh dress appropriately uh I found the pinkest shirt that I own uh nice I went with more of the studious look so you said that you saw this a long time ago do you remember much of it?
I saw it uh more or less when it came out I would have seen it on uh like DVD or even VHS honestly I don’t remember the actual film I remember like the general plot points but like I couldn’t tell you what happens as it goes you know
I remember when it came out in the theaters that my friends really wanted to go see it and so we kept sneaking into it but we would only see parts of it at a time so I saw it in like four parts I don’t know okay
Since this is YouTube this is going to be a shortened version of a much longer video which you can find on our Patreon our extended length videos are usually about twice as long as what you see here on YouTube so if you want to see us get into some
More discussion and more reactions to maybe some of your favorite parts you can find the link in the description I know that this is considered like one of the best romcoms yeah I remember enjoying it when I was like 13 so
I will admit to having had quite a lot of prejudices against sororities and fraternities I had some bad interactions as a teenager with people who were in sororities and did not have positive views of them for a while and I think that this movie shows a more positive portrayal of just like people supporting each other
Which is pretty cool yeah it’s it’s sort of like the opposite of the “not like other girls” Trope it’s the point that you can be feminine and girl and all that stuff and be accomplished and a law you know a hot shot lawyer and all that right
I mean it helps being incredibly rich obviously but yeah that always helps are there that many people in a sorority? like I have no idea how any of this stuff works I went to an all guys small college in New York like I don’t know any of this stuff
My sister she was in like the top sorority of her school and she was on the Greek Council and all of that I actually have no idea how many people were in her sorority but I do get the impression that it was I don’t know maybe half this size
Cuz this is a lot of people I love this song yeah the early 2000s like the late 90s early 2000s romcoms had amazing soundtracks as we just found out with 10 Things I Hate About You oh God yes that was amazing wow
I love how it’s it’s showing us from the beginning that she’s not like easy she’s not you’re not going to take advantage of her she’s not dumb she’s very knowledgeable in what she knows she may have like a more narrow world view but she’s not a push over and she’s
Also not being a jerk about it she’s just stating things how they are and saying I’m not a pushover yep oh he looks so smarmy I don’t like his hair they did a really good job of making him gross but but gross in that Bachelor handsome kind of way
Like in that that I don’t trust anything he says kind of way in that Nathaniel kind of way ooo yes Crazy Ex-Girlfriend that that conventionally generically conventionally handsome kind of way oh no [ __ ] around interesting term oh God who breaks up with someone like that?
A guy like that no conversations no regard for her feelings purely just you’re no longer useful to me is that a Harry Met Sally joke? was it? I was thinking about Harry Met Sally like another sort of scene in a restaurant but I I didn’t know if it was like a direct reference
Like the opposite of that one instead of it being good it was bad oh she just said I won’t be having the salad in the background so yeah I think I think it was a Harry Met Sally reference -that’s amazing -that’s cute
I actually really want to get a manicure or pedicure but I can’t because emery boards give me major sensory issues like like the even seeing one makes me uncomfortable hearing one feeling touching one just like I freak out I can’t I can’t do emery boards they make me so uncomfortable -ooh -little harsh
I don’t like that line yeah I don’t like that line it this movie is still from 2001 so there’s going to be some moments that didn’t necessarily age well this guy is a vibe that was my sister’s major she was in Alpha Phi for any of those of you who are sorority girls
She and I have a different dad so she’s significantly wealthier I grew up like quite poor very different outlook on life it’s it’s amazing the the difference in perspective people have growing up wealthy versus growing up middle class versus growing up poor like it’s truly mindboggling how different the world is for people like
Until you’ve either been in one group or the other until you’ve maybe had close friends and seen how they like it’s it can be a massive culture shock yeah like people who don’t have to worry about money versus people who have to budget versus people
Who are just trying to not be homeless it’s just you live in different worlds yeah I’ve spent the majority of my life in that last category so um yeah uh this seems like good time we have a patreon if you want to support us help us make more videos yeah exclusive content Discord Community
We are totally not trying to guilt you into it or anything no no of course not uh if you want to support us we love that but you know at your own pace and no pressure she doesn’t take no shit and I kind of love that
Yeah the adults and by adults I mean people who aren’t in her sority yeah are not particularly supportive of her but I also but I don’t like the fact that like once she’s like okay you’re gonna do it she didn’t
Try to she let her I actually kind of liked how she handled it like like
If if a young person who was always into fashion and um had never expressed any interest in law came to me and said you know what I want to be a lawyer this like you know a 21 one 22y old I’d be
Like are you sure because when you’re young you do like you switch interests pretty quick so and what university you go to and what you choose to do is a pretty big decision so I can understand the the
Guidance counselor whose job this is is kind of like are you sure this is what you want to do? like and when she said like yes this is what I’m doing she’s like okay like this is what you need like I I I don’t have any problem with way she reacted personally yeah
Like she was caught off guard and she sort of reacted the way anyone would react she was yeah like you know I just wanted to bring attention to the production design of this in the background there was a bouquet of roses that was hanging upside down dried
That is some beautiful attention to detail because I know so many women who when they were young they went to proms or dances or whatever and they were given flowers and they kept them dried like that and I just think that’s a really awesome detail eww that’s cringy a little bit yeah oh I vaguely remember this
Even as a 13-year-old I was like this is kind of weird that the old men are like yes after seeing this you know? well law schools usually tend to look for a diversity of people
Yes but she’s a rich white girl like does that although diversity in terms of um education and other things too yeah yeah most so I got my degree in political science which is where most people go into if they think they’re going to be going into law okay
So like I imagine that law schools are probably getting just a ton of polisci and history majors yeah serious subjects you know it’s still the whole the whole like her in a bikini thing just makes me slightly uncomfortable still like you got this Elle you go girl oh to be pretty neurotypical and rich
Now I do love like showing that the the girls are all supporting her like the the brotherhood that like they had this whole plan not well Sisterhood I should say even though they were they were kind of like iffy at the beginning like are you sure once
She told them they were like all right we’re doing this and they were super supportive and loving and I love that this is kind of icky I mean all the things they’re saying are actually completely accurate like yes she actually is qualified I’m not sure how I feel about about how that scene played out
It felt like it was sort of played for laughs and and as a 13-year-old boy watching it again I vaguely remember feeling like oh she didn’t really deserve it they just liked it because she’s hot and whatever but watching it now as a grown man it’s like
No those are all legit like she was in a music video act that is acting acting is hard I’ve been in a short film I’ve been in a couple of commercials I’ve been on stage like it’s hard
And being in a music video you know you’re dancing you’re acting it’s a lot of work it’s long days um she designed an entire line of clothes that takes skill was that played for laughs like oh she didn’t really deserve it but she’s hot so they let her in?
Or was it played for no no she’s she’s legit like I can’t tell like watching it now I can’t tell how the movie meant it to be played I get the impression that the screenwriters meant it to be not so much for laughs and the direction kind of muddled it a little bit
Like I think they were trying to explain why they actually did let her in how those things seem shallow at first but then they explained them they’re like oh okay you know what that was sort of my prejudice but then the direction it’s not quite so clear
By having them all like staring like like Neanderthals at the screen I feel like yeah I guess it was kind of funny but I feel like that sort of undercut it like wouldn’t it have been more interesting if they were just like so caught off guard
By this like they’ve never received a video essay like this wouldn’t it be like if they were looking at it like huh like sort of a a a surprised expression a like I don’t know what to do with this expression instead of a you know expression
Yeah I think that there are some direction choices that I I find a little bit confusing yeah it’s really great that you actually bring up um the the fact that it feels like the writing and direction sort of differed in in the goal of the scene
I just looked up the writers and the directors so the writer the the director is a uh is someone named Robert Luketic uh his first feature length movie okay okay but the writers and this is where it gets very interesting uh first of all the novel
That it’s based on was written by Amanda Brown so okay the original story written by a woman and the other two writers who wrote the screenplay are Karen McCulla and Kirsten Smith so it was written by the the screenplay was written by
A pair of women so I wonder if that might be the disconnect what also is interesting about these two writers can you guess what else they wrote? no uh they wrote 10 Things I Hate About You oh shit what?
Both of them I know both both of them wrote both of them were writers on 10 Things I Hate About You that makes a lot of sense uh so that is an unintentional connection to one of our previous videos yeah it’s funny because I was thinking about what my impression was of that scene
When I saw it as a kid and I think it was very similar to yours in that I thought that they were just letting like rationalizing why they were going to let her in because they thought she was hot when in reality she was quite qualified
Yeah uh so I I’d like to pose the question to our viewers um for for that scene uh how what do you remember feeling when you first saw it if you saw it many years ago? or how do you feel you know seeing it now?
Like do you sort of feel like us where it sort of the the writing and Direction felt a little disjointed? how do how do you see that scene? um I’d love to hear your thoughts on it um you know we love we love hearing
Different perspectives here at Two Friends React because we have only our own personal perspectives and that’s kind of the point of this entire show you know yeah that’s a great question thank love the music obviously we can’t play too much of it for our viewers because
Uh because YouTube copyright rules but it’s a lot of fun go check out the soundtrack on on YouTube the classical music contrast ah this was at a time when like Chihuahua were the popular like rich girl dog and because women like them chihuahuas got an inordinate amount of hate
Like let’s be honest that’s why they got all the hate um but I think they’re like they’re dogs dogs are wonderful well hi kitten oh oh you’re adorable okay hey hey butt! she’s being a a little butthead who’s a butthead? would people actually get out and stop and stare at it at her this way?
Or would like people are just doing their own thing? I think that’s a little bit overblown but also like it’s a movie so priorities ouch rude Okay autistic coded yeah I like her – the actress Go Bears!
I was literally about to say she’s um coded lesbian but no not coded she just is and that’s awesome I hope they don’t ruin it Josie and the Pussycats! I love that movie it’s such a campy romp it’s Meridith Scott Lynn I’ve seen her before I love that little tie
I love that oh my it’s it’s you it’s basically what you’re wearing it’s like ah I love it I do wish that I had that like smoking jacket thing though that’s fantastic yeah but no but you’ve got the collar the tie I love it good breath work not in America where it’s a big it’s basically
Showmanship in America like the whole way lawyer trial by lawyer and everything works is messed up I mean is it really that way anywhere? I don’t know policies and procedures are used as tools to uphold the status quo in most places and over most histories
Very true but in in when you have lawyers trying to convince a jury because uh not every country uses trial by jury right when you use jury especially the one person of color and she flicks him in the head okay
Not a great look when you have trial by jury um the lawyers are basically trying to convince the jury and they’re not trying to convince the jury of the truth they’re trying to convince the jury of their side which makes it about Showmanship uh about uh oration speaking
Not actually about facts um when you have a judge it’s somewhat similar but the judge is trained he knows what tricks the lawyer is using so it’s it’s I’m not going to say it’s good there’s still all kinds of biases and everything else
But it’s not but with trial by lawyer it trial by jury it really is so much about Showmanship because juries are made up of the average person who either weren’t smart enough to get out of juror duty because apparently most people don’t want to do it
I don’t know or people who just were willing to do it and want to be part of it and there’s some people who like are excited at the idea putting away and they’re bringing their own biases yeah I’ve definitely known people who have been maybe not excited by jury duty
But feel like it’s their civic duty and feel a sense of pride in completing that task in the same way that they would with like voting um sure that said I do understand that I tend to run in more political focused circles you have a selection bias yeah a little bit
Um also uh jury uh uh uh lawyers have tools to narrow a jury down to the specific people they want if a person is on trial for sexual assault a lawyer will go into the Jury Room where they’re selecting jury and say “has anyone here been sexually harassed or assaulted or knows someone who has?”
And every woman will raise their hand and then they will be disqualified because oh they’ll be biased they never ask “hey have you ever inappropriately touched a woman?” you know Holland Taylor lesbian icon Holland Taylor is in one of my favorite films D.E.B.S.
That face I I love the casting of Selma Blair because she’s like the exact opposite in terms of the way she she acts I mean first of all she’s a very good actor so I love that part of the casting
But in terms of uh how she often the characters she often plays they’re quiet they’re subdued the serious law student versus fun college girl like they did such a good job of of building that contrast that we see within literally 10 seconds of her being introduced yeah um that
Is excellent writing excellent storytelling um to basically tell us so much about a character and their relation to the other characters that we know already in such a short period of time no she’s so good
Just mean it’s like none of your business like what what reason does she have to hate Elle Woods right now? that’s the like question I have like I think everybody thinks that she’s out of place and doesn’t belong there ah and that they’re sort of wasting class Time by not being prepared yeah
Luke Wilson ah yes the other Wilson I remember when they were trying to make him a thing in the early 2000s they were trying so hard to make him like the next big comedy star I’m like eh yeah I kind of feel like other people could have played his role just fine
Yeah I don’t know how many people could have pulled off Elle Woods this well yeah whether you like Owen Wilson or not he has a uniqueness to him that works sometimes and like no one else can play Owen Wilson Luke’s a lot more generic
He’s just yeah a non-threateningly good-look guy who’s competent at what he does he’s not bad he’s not a bad actor he’s just the epitome of competence yeah oh no I did not remember this part of the movie oh maybe that’s why she was being so antagonistic I think so
That was fast that is disturbing how fast that was very fast which begs the question was he seeing her before they broke up? or were they like family friends who knew each other and it’s sort of like is she also sort of like
Oh he’s useful oh he’s explaining now I’ll shut up and listen that’s not nice ooh using you don’t use the same nooo term of endearment nope I mean babe hun things like that generic ones but you don’t use a specific oh oh yeah they’re really making us hate him
And at least she didn’t say anything about it either because that would just be hurtful to the other person so she’s not like lowering herself to their level
To be fair at this point Vivien kind of deserves to be like she was nasty to someone she didn’t know just like that was pretty awful oh I love her so much oh yes I think that she is an underrated actor
Okay she said a line in a movie that I I didn’t think was particularly good and don’t feel like I don’t even remember what the name of it was but there was this line that she delivered that I feel like nobody else could have delivered as well as she did
Oh yeah it’s it’s Jennifer Coolidge who’s amazing she sort of got typecast uh into the sort of like hot mom role whatever after American Pie but yeah no she’s legitimately a brilliantly talented like brilliantly a comedic actor like she’s funny
She’s hilarious I totally forgot that she was the MILF yeah I just think of her as a brilliant comedic actress she is Jennifer Coolidge she is more than just Stiffler’s Mom she’s a very very funny actor um and I’m vaguely starting to remember her role in this but not really
We needed a break just for Jennifer Coolidge of course always she’s so great already I think I’m actually crying because she makes me laugh so much how does she not get more voice work she is such a cool iconic voice mmhmm aww puppy who isn’t a sucker for an underbite? oi
Oh that was a flirt wink if ever I’ve seen one yeah still a little disconcerting for me but ooh y eah you could be me [Laughter] ah he’s not worth it I mean that’s part of the whole point of this movie which I love wait I know that actor who is that? Victor Garber
How do I know him Alias? I don’t know he’s in a lot of stuff he plays he also plays gross really well I think he does good like villainous oh she’s evil it’s not a good answer though it’s a great movie line but it’s not a good answer
I guess it depends on what the professor is looking for that’s true what a coward rude very go make friends with the other misfits they’re cool and more interesting mmhmm why is she being mean?
Yeah what? why? what? what was that exchange? oh probably because she had bad experiences with sororities and is projecting it onto Elle yeah I think they are also playing into the angry lesbian trope a bit yeah when it comes to their gay characters they’re a little stereotypical ooh
I love that phone I want a fluffy phone I could get a fluffy phone case but it get dirt with a cell phone it would get dirty so quickly why merlot specifically? I know not even oh God no I vaguely remember how this goes and it’s not good you tell her Bruiser
Yep it’s what I remembered oh she lied about it being a costume party ouch oh I don’t like cringe comedy and I mean this isn’t comedy this is meant to be mean like but it hurts oh God look at the guy behind her just checking her out that was that was rough
Cheers to that it’s a good one she’s horrible? oh yeah it’s the it’s the um they’re playing up the the her character is sort of like the the term woke didn’t exist yet but like the woke queer the woke lesbian who’s like you
Know oh it’s not history it’s herstory it’s you know like the semester semen versus ovaries like what? like that doesn’t like doesn’t make sense from like an etymology like they pick an example that no actual Progressive or woke person would ever actually use because it’s a dumb example a strawman
No one has ever – it’s a straw man thank you exactly – that’s what they’re doing with this character they’re turning her into a straw man the angry lesbian feminist who hates man strawman by making her kind of dumb focusing on frivolous things that don’t have any real world impact
And don’t even make sense like it would be one thing if if she was saying history versus herstory like at least semantically that it’s dumb but it makes sense this is like getting semen from semester versus ovaries that’s just I hope this wasn’t written by the the female
Writers because like it’s kind of homophobic and that would suck but women can be homophobic too mmhmm um but no you’re completely right that it’s just it’s just it’s just an ugly portrayal yeah I remember this character and a little and one later standing out to me um probably because
I’m queer we tend to focus on the things that affect our demographics a little bit more um and being a little bit disappointed yeah feeling like this was not an accurate portrayal of real people ew ew you broke up with her you don’t get to say that yeah
Ugh I mean she’s also not do like what she’s doing also isn’t okay she’s trying to break up his relationship like I also like the that she’s not a perfect character she she is flawed she does things that aren’t cool dang gaslighting is that gaslighting? or is that just being an asshole? but what?
Like what go shopping? no hey she’s getting a computer getting shit together montage then why clear your throat? that scene was unnecessary I mean showing her getting the computer was important but I think they just wanted to remind us that he exists and is potentially interested in her yeah
It’s that guy I like him yeah me too he is very tall I feel like he is somebody I know uh huh I like how it starts she’s still unsure it’s not like right away she’s got it she’s still unsure she’s still learning she’s still kind of nervous the dog
Oh my God the Christmas tree the guy who plays Dorky David he was in NOPE oh yeah? yep uh he played Finn Bachman I don’t remember who that was I think he might have been the director Hmm
Yeah he was uh he was like the director of the shoot at the beginning with the horse that’s so funny pretty sure that’s illegal yeah uh you don’t have have to be a lawyer to act as like anyone can represent I you know what I don’t know any
Anyone know how it works are you allowed to present as a lawyer without being a legal lawyer? because you are allowed to represent yourself in court but you’re not an attorney so I don’t know anyone know? comments? help us out
We know even less about law than we do about medicine and we’re not Medical experts tell them Elle women supporting women yeah yay Paulette yay doggy oh look at that beautiful boy aww love dogs s he did something for someone else she did something kind also for herself not for a boy
And using the legal stuff yes exa- yes “sperm” I like the fact that she got the ifruit you know like it’s another way that sort of separates her with the colorful you know in a world of drab aw snap I love it when you talk about sperm I love the dog’s groan
Well it certainly makes it hard to misplace or to confuse with someone else yeah it does give it a little something extra yes yes that is what happened I want to know what it smells like I’m just picturing strawberries because it’s pink like you know strawberry candy probably smells like Love Potion
Aww I love that they’re spending like the evening to I just I love this friendship but You’ think wouldn’t Elle spend Christmas with her family? in other words he’s using uh free uh Free Labor so that was part one of our reaction to uh Legally Blonde
