Welcome back to our second episode of our special series celebrating Black History Month this week we’re recognizing the divine 9 the divine 9 are the nine historical african-american sororities and fraternities that make up the National pan-hellenic Council each fraternity and sorority has their unique letters calls and strolls and we got the
Exclusive opportunity of speaking with present members and some past members check it out we started off with Alpha Phi Alpha and Alpha Kappa Alpha of course they’ve been both the first African American male and female both Kappa Alpha and Omega sci-fi fraternity foundations in 1911 it was a time where
He went from everything then on top of the yard and which you could be out and you could you know walk in your land do that stuff until they stopped that and you have to do everything behind closed doors we say it was kind of fresh fresh air amongst everybody but I guess
Amongst black people they were kind of fun Assessor togetherness Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Bert’s two years later in 1913 at Lander University it was Lander College at the time Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was then found at seven years later in 1920 in Sigma Gamma Rho in 1922 unfortunately we couldn’t
Get interviews for Phi Beta Sigma and the University of South Carolina does not have the iota Phi Theta chapter each returning and sorority gave us insight on what it means to be a part of their NPHC Council and I remember you said to me a long time ago wherever you go in
The world find a sister and find a church and you’ll be it you’ll be okay I really feel like that I’ve I’ve seen that happen of course I was happy I was happy and it’s just something it’s kind of surreal experience when I saw him go
Over you know I cried a little bit you know no crowd it was something that you just don’t see every day and with the fact that he is a fourth generation that is really you know not only being a fourth generation college student but a fourth generation cafe in general it’s pointed
Out that I feel like it’s a point of view that opportunities that will provide it’s been there are no challenges that can’t be that we can’t overcome by working together and and the stereotype challenges that they have faced and still face nerdy guys or the ones that you’ll see dressed up nice on
Campus doing good things really just that we’re conceited pretty boys kalenna tea will be one of them are you being all being overly aggressive Finn I know the only way to assert yourself is by being aggressive of Delta women tended to be classified as the more the darker
Skinned women we were smart everybody you know felt like we were really smart and we were apart from them being nine different sororities and fraternities they all came to an agreement with one thing continues I just really want to continue that legacy of sisterhood and service
We’re very big on that we’re big on achieving it you always thought I would enchant anything about what I’ve done as far as like joining us joining this great fraternity because I think that was the best decision I could have made gives me a little bit of a confidence
Boost because my mom is one of the most amazing intelligent women I know cannot fit in a box you can have ten different women of the same organization and you would not you couldn’t just tell that they were a part of Sigma Gamma Rho sorority incorporated
And we think I got a unique opportunity being a legacy because I got to see what it’s for HGTV news for I’m Morgan Jackson if you’re interested in any of the divine nine check out info at MPH chq org well we hope you enjoyed this episode tune in next week as we cover
