Hello everyone and thank you for joining us in our study different majors in the United States Series today we will focus on study nonprofit management in the United States my name is hany and I am the education USA advisor here in par in the Czech Republic and today I have a
Special guest Sydney who is an English teaching assistant in Slovakia hello Sydney hi so the floor is yours thank you for introducing nonprofit management to our students hi everyone uh my name is Sydney ligher I am currently a Fullbright English teaching assistant in Slovakia I am hosted in the city lvit so
It’s close to the border of Hungary I’m originally from Florida in the United States but I attended the University of Georgia for both my undergraduate and my graduate education so I graduated with bachelor’s degrees in public relations and sociology and a master’s degree in nonprofit management which is what I’m
Going to be talking to you guys about today so just a little bit of an overview about the nonprofit sector and what a nonprofit is and you guys might know nonprofits as Charities or NOS non-governmental organizations ations they’re known by a lot of different names but all kind of the same thing so
Basically a nonprofit organization or an NGO is an organization whose most important goal is something that isn’t about making a profit it’s going to be a mission-driven organization that’s aiming to do some form of good for society so this can be a cultural organization something focusing on education the environment maybe a
Specific social issue nonprofits really focus on a wide variety of things which is something that’s so exciting about them because there’s so many different opportunities and ways to be involved in nonprofits so just in the us alone to give you an idea of how big this sector is there’s 1.5 million employees working
In nonprofits it’s 6% of the GDP so that’s a very large percent um and nearly 500 billion do billion dollars were donated to nonprofits in 2022 so this is a huge sector with a lot of opportunities and it’s actually a growing sector so one of the really exciting things about nonprofits and
Studying nonprofit management is that these organizations really need people with that specialized training and they’re really seeking people who have this stronger educational background with a diverse set of skills so by doing a nonprofit management degree and studying it there’s really a lot of opportunities for you to get hired and
Really make an impact in this sector so Sydney do you ever get a question like so do you volunteer if you work in a nonprofit management or something so is it a volunteer job that is a very common question um nonprofits do pay their employees uh most nonprofits do rely pretty heavily on
Volunteers but the actual employees at the organization they are true employees so they will get paid you so just a little bit of information about me and my background and kind of what got me into college and since I did this nonprofit management degree as a
Graduate degree I’m going to tell you a little bit about my high school resume as well as my undergraduate resume so that you can see what I did to get myself into college originally and then what I did during college college to get me into this master’s
Program so in high school my resume what was on my college application I had a really strong grade point average I took what are called AP classes advanced placement classes so I took about 12 of those in high school so that looked really impressive on my application and
I had a good attendance record which is something that’s really stressed in the United States during high school I’m gonna jump in real quick so sorry guys for watch in GPA is something that we don’t have in the Czech Republic or Slovakia so don’t get all scared that
You have to have it there are some calculators how you can calculate your GPA uh but you don’t have to submit your GPA because you don’t have it but of course if you would like to know what your GPA is you can let me know and I’m happy to provide any calculators for
That and AP classes is again something that’s not very common in our high school you can take AP classes extra outside of your high school U maybe at Centrum prades which is an organization where you can take AP online and it’s something that can help you as Sydney
Said it really looked impressive on her application that she did some AP classes as well as you can definitely do some summer schools or some other classes within a university so there are tons of opportunities but APS if you know what would you like to say that’s a perfect option for you thank
You and just kind of going off of that if you are applying to college in the United States there is a different international student application so a lot of these things that like were really important for my application that don’t NE necessarily exist outside of the United States you don’t you really
Don’t have to worry about it like they these universities are aware and they’re not going to like take anything against you because you don’t have a grade point average or you didn’t have access to AP classes so don’t worry about it at all thank you um so I was really involved at my
High school as well so I played lacrosse all four years of high school and I was in a leadership position so I served as my team captain my senior year and similarly I was in the art Club at my school for all four years and I was also
In a in a leadership position so I served two years as treasurer of volunteer hours is something that’s also really stressed in the United States while you’re in high school so I did over 400 hours of volunteering this was at local nonprofits as well as some international service opportunities so
That was again something that just enhanced my application um can you share with our followers or with the viewers how is it easy to get a volunteer job in the United States volunteering is very widespread in the United States um it’s one of the things that I appreciate about the us so
Much is that people really are willing to volunteer their time so pretty much every nonprofit there’s going to be volunteer opportunities a lot of high schools will organize volunteer events um it’s really it’s really something that we’re passionate about and something that we do fairly often very cool
And then during my time as an undergraduate so when I was working on my bachelor’s degrees so this would have been what was on my application for graduate school um again when you’re in college we have grade point averages in the US as well so that was something
That I had um while I was in undergrad I did three different internships so had a lot of experience in the nonprofit sector before I was doing this application I was a peer learning assistant for three years which is it’s similar to being a teaching assistant but I was
Working with students my own age so they called it a pure learning assistant so I did that for three years in a Native American studies class um I was in student organizations all four years of University and I was involved in some leadership roles in a
Couple of them and I also did a service learning study abroad my the summer after my freshman year so I was able to go to South Africa and I took two classes while also volunteering at a local NGO that’s very impressive Sydney I have to say you’ve done so much
Yeah I really wanted to like take advantage of every opportunity I had in college so I went a little overboard and tried to do as much as I could exactly that’s how it should be yeah for sure yeah it definitely made College fun for
Me so also just kind of an idea of what colleges I applied for um so when I was in high school and I was applying for undergraduate so my first four years of University I applied to seven schools so I applied to the University of Georgia which is where I ultimately attended uh
The University of Virginia North Carolina Maryland Duke Wake Forest and Williams college and kind of the what led me to um this list of colleges so originally when I was applying I wanted to be a journalist or I wanted to do something in the international Affairs sector so I was
Really looking for universities that had strong journalism programs or International Affairs degrees and ultimately I went to college and I changed my major a bunch of times before I eventually landed on sociology and public relations so that journalism thing didn’t really work out but that
Was kind of how I came up with this list and they had really strong programs overall so I knew that if I attended one and I ended up changing my mind I was still going to be in good hands this is so special about the US education system that you can go
Undecided and that’s something that I always tell students like if you don’t know the United States is a perfect fit for you because the first one and a half two years you can just take classes you can change your mind and that’s just lovely I I really appreciate that about the
US yeah I’m especially because I ended up changing my mind so many times I was really really happy that that was just something I was able to do and looking back on it I do kind of wish I had gone in as undecided rather than having a
Major declared uh because then I really would have just taken a lot of different classes and found what I was interested in without going in with any preconceived ideas so also what was really important to me was location um so I really was only interested in schools on the east
Coast of the United States um I’m from Florida so that’s where my family is I wanted to easily go home for the holidays for my family to be able to come visit me and I also am not very good in the cold I am from Florida I’m
From the south so I didn’t want to apply anywhere where it was going to get too too cold so I tried to focus mainly on Southern States so location was something that was really important to me here I would just like to point out you guys because you’re going to be
International you might want to search for the nearest airport so that you don’t have to travel you know long distances and so forth so I’m sure that you know like these cities they have some major international airports but just make sure if you are looking for your college bit this is something that
You might want to consider as well yeah definitely um and another thing I was thinking about was I was mainly interested in attending a large University so especially the first four on my list are huge State institutions the other three are a little bit smaller but Juke and Wake Forest are still big
Enough um and the reason I was interested in large universities was because there’s this saying that I always heard that it’s easier to make a large school feel small than a small school feel large so that kind of means that at a large school there’s going to
Be a lot of different things there’s going to be a lot of different people from all different backgrounds and there’s really going to be a lot of places that you can go on campus including different student organizations and really find your place and because these schools are so big
There’s going to be a lot more of those options whereas a smaller University it might be a little more difficult for you to find where you fit in so that was just something that I really took into consideration um was just really making sure that I was going to find a place
That no matter what I was interested in I was going to be able to fit in on this campus what what a wonderful saying like I’ve never heard it before but that’s something that really interests me and it is true actually yeah it’s true but interesting yeah I don’t know who I
Heard it from but I just remember hearing it and really being like oh wow that makes so much sense and uh when I went to apply for graduate school so when I went to apply for my Master’s Degree I only applied to the University of Georgia um and the
Reason I did this there’s kind of two reasons so one is that ug does have a really famous nonprofit management program it’s one of the first ones it’s one of the only ones in the South that really only focuses on nonprofits rather than being a business degree that has
This emphasis or something along those lines so I already was interested in staying at UG and also something that was really special about ug is that there is a program called double dogs and this basically allows you to start taking graduate level classes while you’re an undergraduate it so while I
Was working on my bachelor’s degrees I was also taking uh credits for my Master’s Degree and it was able to double count so they were electives for my undergraduate and also counting towards this graduate program so by the time I finished my bachelor’s degrees I was already a semester through my
Graduate program in nonprofit management so it really just made sense for me to stay at ug because I was already in the program I was was already involved with it and it cut it down so that I only had to stay for one more year which was something that was really important to
Me because I was an out of state student so tuition was a little more expensive so it was a smart financial decision to stay at U as well and so you didn’t have to apply again and you know submit your Gres or anything to appli to Graduate
Studies so I did have to fill out the application um but because I had already been taking these classes it was it was more of a formality than like an actual true application process so I still had to apply and um fill out the paperwork do the essay like everybody else did but
Being like halfway in the program already just gave me an extra step up really interesting that’s really interesting and I again I look at it from the financial point of view because in the Czech Republic and in Slovakia education is free of charge here so it
Is uh it can be very challenging for Czech students I’m going to talk about Czech students to study in the United States so knowing that they can accelerate their master’s program uh can be very like you know this is this is exactly what I’m looking for and it’s
It’s going to cost me less a little bit if I can do that so thank you for sharing your experience and also just to point out for ug’s nonprofit management degree um to apply for it you do not have to take the GRE so I didn’t have to take any
Standardized tests for this graduate program good so some universities that have nonprofit management programs um so I did a list of undergraduate and graduate programs so some undergraduate universities that are known for this are University of Indiana Bloomington Arizona State University in Phoenix and University of Central Florida which is
In Orlando Florida and some graduate programs are Washington University in St Louis Binghamton University which is I’m pretty sure it’s in New York a University of Texas at Austin Northeastern University which I want to say is in Boston and uh ug which is where I attended MH
And I do want to make note that a lot of schools don’t necessarily have a specific degree in nonprofit management but if it is something that you’re interested in a lot of schools do have an emphasis within their business or political science programs so you might
Be able to do like a business degree with an emphasis or a concentration in nonprofit management okay so now I’m going to talk a little bit about the Master’s Degree I completed so the specific program that I did at UT so the goal of this program really was to train nonprofit Professionals in
Foundational skills so we took a lot of classes focusing on different skills that would come in handy in the nonprofit sector and this was to create more well-rounded leaders and also to kind of allow us to explore these skills and see what we’re interested in because a
Lot of them translate to a specific job at nonprofits so like if you took I’m going to go over the all of the classes that I took but just for example if I took like the volunteer management class and I really liked it then I might know
That going into a career as a volunteer manager is something I’m interested in or if I really hated this class and I would know not to apply for those types of jobs jobs MH a lot of the classes we took also were really Hands-On uh so they were
Projects and papers that had real world applications so we might have been working directly with a nonprofit and doing work that they were then going to be able to implement uh or we might have just been looking at an actual nonprofit and like doing a description of one of their programs or
Doing a program evaluation of them or doing something that just again you looking at a specific nonprofit so you understanding how different organizations work and also just again being able to work directly with them so that you had extra experience rather than it just being a educational setting
It was also a very professional one I love the you know the fact that it’s not just theoretical learning but you really go into what’s going on and you learn learn on something that’s working already and then when you actually enter the Working World you’re ready you know
You just don’t have that theoretical knowledge and then you learn you know while you go but this is perfect that you get to experience it and you said that you already had internships and some maybe optional practical training which is which is just amazing yeah this program is also a little bit
Shorter than a lot of master’s degrees so it’s 33 credit hours which translates to being about three semesters or a year and a half so if you do this program as a full-time student meaning like you are just doing College you’re not also working you can be done in a year and a
Half so usually you would do like a fall semester and then a spring semester and then finish in the summer so it’s a little bit shorter and it’s pretty flexible because a lot of people in the program are actually doing it part-time so they are working at a nonprofit and taking these
Classes usually at night or online or just in their free time so that was another thing that was really cool was that a lot of my classes I was learning and working with people who had maybe been working in the nonprofit sector for 10 plus years already and were using
This program as a way to really like train themselves in skills and also allow them the opportunity to become more managers rather than just general employees in a Nonprofit and we also had the freedom to choose electives and an internship that interested us and I’m gonna kind of skip over that for now because I go into more detail on the next couple slides so these are the classes that I took for this degree so we had that
Looks like seven required courses our three electives in our internship so the required courses were really designed to give us different experience with different skills all kind of at like a basic level but also giving us that hands-on experience so we took Theory and management of nonprofit organizations
Which is basically just this is what a nonprofit is this is how it works like this is it was kind of an overview of nonprofits and General and then also like the actual like Legal Foundation of a nonprofit nonprofit financial management so that was a lot of looking at like how
To read a budget and also how to design a budget evaluation of professional practice so this was a program evaluation course where you were looking at a specific program nonprofits were operating so maybe that was like a tutoring program at a local school so you were learning how to
Evaluate that program to make sure that it’s actually doing what it’s supposed to be doing and then also figuring out how to make suggestions to improve it fundraising and development suggest different ways to fundraise different types of fundraising uh managing volunteers that’s how to work with volunteers and keep them engaged because
Again nonprofits really do rely heavily on their volunteer base Grant proposal writing so this is how to write a grant so grants are usually nonprofits will submit a Grant application to a foundation which is a funding source so this was learning how to apply to get money for your
Organization and we actually went through the process of writing a full Grant application during that class and the grad first seminar was required by ug for all graduate students so this was kind of an introduction to ug um it was led by our program advisor
So we also got to know him really well as well as the other people in our program so it kind of created a community for us and we also had guest speakers who either had graduated from this program before and they were able to give us advice and tell us what
They’re doing now and we also had guest speakers who were um working at nonprofit so again they were just able to tell us about their experience and give us advice so that we would know what to do going forward that is really cool I do have a
Question though do you have to be very strong in maths to be able to because you mentioned the nonprofit financial management that looks into you know finances and stuff uh how is your math so I am not great at math I will not lie um it’s not my strong suit and I
Still did fine in nonprofit financial management um it’s really there wasn’t too much math involved um and the math that we did have to do it was pretty straightforward it was usually just plugging numbers into an equation that was given for us so it wasn’t super math heavy so if you’re
Worried about that don’t be um I definitely was worried when I went into that class but really the goal of that class was just for us to understand the vocabulary and the terminology of different Financial aspects of nonprofits and again to like actually be able to design a budget
Which isn’t too math heavy okay thank you that’s good uh for our electives we got to take three electives and these could be from anywhere on ug’s campus it didn’t have to be in the nonprofit management department or in the School of Social Work which is where this program is
Housed uh this they designed it this way so that we would really have the opportunity to explore our interests and kind of take whatever classes we thought could be helpful for us so I took two classes in something called social entrepreneurship which is similar to nonprofits but it’s usually a business
Rather than an NGO so social entrepreneurship will be it’s a business whose goal is to do good for society as well as make profit so it isn’t just about making money it’s also about giving back so I thought this could be interesting um and I took the first class social entrepreneurship and I
Really liked it so I took social entrepreneurship strategic storytelling which built off of that introduction class and was mainly focused on like communication and how to tell an organization story in order to attract people to your cause and because I did my underr graduate in public relations and I was really interested in
Doing PR for a nonprofit that class was a really good fit for me and I was able to take it because this open elective policy and the final elective I took was in the women’s studies department so it was environment gender race and class um I was really interested in food
Insecurity and food issues and the professor’s area of research is food insecurity so I took that class to really explore that interest and it also talked about how environmental issues impact people differently based off of their identity and the final requirement was our internship so this is a huge chunk
Of this program so it’s five credit hours which translates to 500 hours of internship um and an internship is really it’s just there there was also flexibility with this requirement so it could be like a full job or it could be a more traditional internship which is just kind of an
Introduction so it’s not fully a job but it’s more formal than like a volunteer possession but it’s still unpaid so my internship was unpaid some people did have paid internships so it really depends on the organization and policy so I would say most internships especially in NOS are going to be unpaid
But there are some that are paid so that could be pretty exciting for sure yeah so for the internship we got to pick our own internship so we weren’t assigned um so we could pick any organization that we wanted and any position at that organization so that
Really again was so that we could explore our interest and get hands-on experience in whatever area we were interested in um and we were also given the opportunity to either do our internship all at one organization or you could do multiple internships so I chose to do all 500
Hours of my internship at the food bank in our area so this is an organization that gets food usually from grocery stores um and then distributes the food to other organizations so that people can get fresh produce as well as all different types of groceries for free and I was a development fellow
Which is kind of a fancy way of saying a fundraising intern so fundraising is one of the areas that I’m really interested in um and it also because it was development it included a lot of communications and PR so it was a really good fit for me and because I was there
For all 500 hours I got a really good understanding of how this type of organization works and how development works so it was a really good experience and a really good way for me to figure out kind of what I do want when I go into the professional world and what I’m
Not super excited about and some different job opportunities with a nonprofit management degree uh obviously just traditional non nonprofit careers so this is there’s so many just within this category this can be program management fundraising volunteer management Communications Finance executive director so actually leading a nonprofit so just within the
Traditional nonprofit sector there are so many options which is something that’s really really exciting about this would you be confident after you know getting a ma Masters in nonprofit management to set up a new nonprofit organization I personally wouldn’t be um I think that’s just because I always am more
Cautious um but I do know a lot of people who I was going through this program with who that was their goal was to graduate and open their own nonprofit and I do think that given the amount of information that we got and all of the experience we had I definitely do think
That if you graduated with this you could start your own nonprofit and be perfectly fine awesome all right and there’s also opportunities outside of that traditional nonprofit path um and I really I wasn’t aware of this when I went into this program I thought the
Only thing I would be able to do with this degree is a nonprofit job um but as I learned and met people it became clear that that’s not true so that’s also really exciting this does set you up for a lot of different opportunities so there’s foundations which are those
Funding sources so you can do this degree and end up working for a fun rather than the nonprofit itself there’s also something called community relations which goes hands hand inand with nonprofit management so usually this is going to be a company or like a professional sports team and they want to build some
Type of a relationship with the community they exist in so they will hire somebody to do community relations for them so this could be you’re working for this company and you’re building relations with the local schools or local nonprofits and you’re kind of just working together to try to benefit the
Community from a more corporate business background rather than working for the nonprofit itself and also universities so un most universities in the US are technically nonprofits so by getting this degree you can really go into a lot of different areas within the university system so a lot of universities have their own grant
Writers or a fundraising department or even like volunteer management or recruitment of any sort so you can get this nonprofit management degree and also choose to work for a university and what is your plan I know that this year you are in Slovakia for a year and you have finished your Ms
Correct yes and so what’s next out of these job opportunities I I’m kind of overwhelmed by the options I’m still trying to figure it out um I as of now I’m leaning more towards working for a university I think that could be really interesting um but I’m kind of open to whatever and
Again knowing that there are are so many options is it’s a little overwhelming because I am a very indecisive person but it’s also really exciting knowing that I can take this degree and do so many different things with it yeah perfect well good luck Sydney thank
You now I’m going to tell you guys a little bit about college life in the US and specifically my life at ug the University of Georgia so a little bit about ug um it’s a pretty large University so there are 40,000 students including undergraduate and graduate students it’s located in Athens Georgia
Which is kind of known as an Arts and Music town in Northeast Georgia it’s really close to the border of South Carolina it’s known as the birthplace of higher education because it was the first Public University chartered in the United States so ug was chartered and given permission to be built in
1785 uh classes didn’t start right away but we still get that title of the first Charter uh the motto is to teach to serve and to inquire into the nature of things so that really emphasizes that ug cares about teaching and also giving back giving back to the
World our colors are red and black and our mascot is the bulldog and I just wanted to include that because ug has a lot of school spirit so we are pretty much always decked out in our red and black and cheering on our Bulldogs that’s again something so much different
From Czech universities you know like it’s just we we don’t have that campus life and the community around campus Because you usually go to school and then you go home you have some extracurriculars or a part-time job but this is something that’s very special for the United States and I have great
Memories of me studying in the US thanks to the uh community life and Campus Life yeah it’s so special in the US because of that and especially at these big schools so like ug was a huge school with so much going on and we really did
Like love being at UG and took a lot of pride in it so here are some pictures of Campus um this upper left picture is kind of the iconic Landmark on ug’s campus it’s the arch um it’s the symbol not just of the University but also of the entire state
Of Georgia the three pillars are said to stand for wisdom Justice and moderation and there’s a lot of really cool Traditions involving the arch uh so probably the biggest tradition at ug is that you don’t walk under the arch until you graduate you always walk around it
So these stairs next to it there’s really deep indents from hundreds of years of people walking up those stairs whereas the stairs underneath the arch are still pretty level and flat and then once you graduate you’re able to walk under the arch so it’s this really like big exciting moment where right after
You get out of graduation you go line up and walk under the arch and it’s it’s just a lot of fun and I think it’s a really cool thing that ug does this upper right picture is the School of Social Work building so the nonprofit management program is within
The School of Social Work so a lot of classes are hosted in this building um that’s where my grant first seminar was that’s where the advisor is so if you ever meet with him that’s where you’re going to be and it’s also just a really nice building there’s a computer lab
There’s a lot lot of little couches and areas to study the outside area is really nice so um I liked going early and sitting outside there’s like a river nearby so it was a really nice place to just kind of hang out and calm down before going to
Class this bottom left picture is Tate Student Center so this is kind of the base of student life at ug so there’s club meetings in there um there’s like pool tables an arcade a movie theater there’s some restaurants and cafes in there it’s a great place to just kind of
Hang out with your friends meet up with people spend some time so I spent a lot of time in Tate and I really enjoyed that building it was there was a lot to do in there and there was always something going on so it was always fun to be in
There and this last picture is the main library so UJ has I think like somewhere between 9 and 12 libraries so the main library is the biggest one it’s the historic one um it was my favorite place to study so it was always really quiet there were always places to sit and
Relax get a lot of work done and there was also a cafe in there so that I could caffeinate myself and get a snack before working on a paper or project or whatever and dormatory so this is where you live on campus um UG and a lot of
Universities in the US in general do require you to live on campus the first year and I really enjoyed this it was a really great way to get to know people because I lived in a large dorm I think there were a thousand people living in
It so there were always people out and about I made a lot of friends in the dorm and then I chose to live on campus again for my sophomore year so I lived on campus for two years MH there’s 22 different dorms at ug because we are
Such a large University and there are a lot of different types of dorms so whatever living situation you’re looking for you can probably find a dorm that suits your needs so this upper right picture is where I lived my freshman year it’s called Creswell Hall this is like the true traditional most common
Type of dorm so I lived in a room with one other girl we were roommates and we had a communal bathroom so the bathroom was in the hallway and we shared it with the entire hul which I know can sound kind of scary um I didn’t have a problem
With it at all the bathroom got cleaned every day so it was always really clean I never had to like wait to use the bathroom or a sink or the shower or anything so if you’re like nervous about a communal bathroom because that’s really common in the
US I didn’t have any problems with it and I don’t think you would either I actually do have a question how did you get on your bed over here like it’s a table the bed is up here and I don’t see any stairs um I did do some gymnastics to
Get into bed so I would usually get onto my desk chair over here and then there’s these like little uhuh rungs I guess and those kind of served as a ladder so I would usually get on my chair step up here and then climb up onto my bed oh very cool
Very cool but it’s possible to put the bed down really right yes so this was I my roommate and I decided that we wanted to have as much space in our dorm as we could so we both lifted our beds um and then underneath my bed we had like a
Little storage unit with a TV on top a fridge and a microwave and then on the other side of the room under her bed we had a couch so we gave ourselves a little living room by lifting up our beds like this cool and then the dorm I lived in my
Sophomore year so this room over here um that was Rutherford Hall so I again I shared this room with my roommate but we upgraded a little bit and we had a private bathroom so we had a bathroom in our room that was just for the two of us
And I say that these two dorm styles are probably the most common Styles but they’re again they’re 22 different types of dorms so you can find an apartment style a single room a room with more than just one roommate whatever you’re looking for there were so many options
And you would be able to find it and dining Halls so on campus eating was also a really big thing at ug we had five different dining Halls um and they were kind of scattered around campus so wherever you were you were never too far
Away from a good meal um you could find pretty much any type of food that you were looking for in these dining Halls each one was kind of known for a different type of food but you could find again pretty much anything you wanted and I usually enjoyed the food I
Thought it was really good and we also I usually sorry I usually warn students about the Freshman 15 you know gaining 15 pounds in your freshman year because everything is just so exciting and so new and you try everything and because it’s like selfservice you go and pick and choose so yeah it’s
Fun yeah that’s definitely I definitely experiened that um because I had an unlimited meal plan so I could go into a dining hall whenever I wanted and get as much food as I wanted at and there was a 24hour day so it was open all day long
Long there was one dining hall like that so I probably ate too much food um but it was it was fine it all worked out and we also had restaurants on campus and cafes so if there was something that you were looking for that wasn’t in the dining hall you would also
Be able to purchase it on campus so we had like some fast food restaurants a little grocery store so many places to get coffee because we were all running on caffeine and the dining Halls also were kind of a social event so it was really
Fun to like go to the dining hall with your friends or even meet new people in the dining hall especially during like the lunch rush you might end up sitting with people that you don’t know and everybody was always super friendly super willing to get to know you so you
Would just kind of sit and have a nice chat with somebody now Student Life um so this was something that was really fun about UG and that I really loved about it so we had over 700 student organizations so pretty much anything you were interested in you would be able
To find a club with other people who were interested in that and if you somehow managed to have something that didn’t already exist you could also start your own student organization so that was something that was really fun and really exciting and I was involved in different clubs for all four years
And I met a lot of really good people in a lot of my best friends through student organizations uh sports are also a really big thing at UG and there’s a lot of different levels of sports so whether you want to participate in one or just
Watch one we had options for you so we had club sports these are usually a little bit more competitive so it would be like a ug team and they would compete against other schools but it wasn’t quite at the level of like the sports that you would see on
TV intramural sports are really casual really laidback it’s usually just like you and a group of friends and you’re competing against other students at ug so those could be a lot of fun and there were a lot of different options for that and then we had the ug sport so
That would be like your basketball your football soccer volleyball gymnastics a ton of different sports and as a student you were able to attend games for free except for football but football tickets were only $10 for students so you got a very big discount and this was again
Just a way to like go experience that school spirit hang out with your friends cheer on your school so UJ sports for a lot of fun and then we also have Greek life organization so those are the traditional social ones which are sororities and fraternities but if you wanted to have
Like a gek Greek life experience outside of that we had different types of organizations so there were Multicultural ones which was a social group of people from similar backgrounds um and they would have all different types of events with each other there were also academic professional and service organiz
So let’s say you’re a business major you could be in a business fraternity what is that on the picture what does the the the letters stand for so swab was Shop with a bulldog um it was a student organization I was involved with all four years of my
Undergraduate so it’s a student run non-profit that works with the local schools uh to take children shopping for the holidays so we would fundraise all year and then we would have a big event day where kids from the schools would come and they would hang out with ug students we would take them
To Walmart and we had a budget and they got to pick out toys and clothes and all sorts of fun stuff for the holidays and it was just it was so much fun it was one of the best things I did in college and again some of my best friends are
People I met through swab that’s amazing wow and it is kind of impossible to talk about ug without talking about football at least what us Americans call football um this is kind of what we’re famous for it’s our most popular sport it’s what we’re really good at um we’re back-to-back national champions we’re
Pretty annoying and obnoxious about it because we’re very proud of this um our Stadium holds I think 93,000 people and it sells out every weekend so this is kind of like the thing to do in the fall you go to the games you hang out with your friends you cheer on your team
Everybody’s decked out in red and black as you can see the picture on the right here this was so much fun I can’t emphasize that enough uh a lot of my like favorite moments from E happened at these football games and it’s a lot of fun even if you
Don’t know anything about football or if you don’t even care about sport that much it was still just a good place to like hang out and take in that school spirit and that’s everything I have to say thank you guys so much for listening thank you thank you Sydney this was
