Hello and welcome back to the common CT podcast the Colts podcast is real takes and no clickbait I’m Josh hudgin joined by Dan herzler Dan we got some news yeah we do we got some news man I mean thought kind of a little quiet by week
Kind of just kind of lay low some good things happened in the AFC to help the Colts playoffs but hey that’s for another day that’s another topic man out of the blue I mean just just no one kind of expected to sha Leonard gets cut released from the Colts man Josh what’s
Your one word reaction to this accountability it’s a total accountability move and it sends a message from Shane Sten to me sha Leonard’s performance this season was bad and I think everybody’s seen that it’s not a shocking statement I think based on his performance alone he could
Have skated through this season and been on the Colts roster through the end of the year but it was the the I’m going to call him stupid comments he made at least once or twice to the media kind of voicing is frustration when the Colts are trying to build a culture rebuild
The culture we we’ve seen it with Shane Sten and in different situations Deon Jackson after he fumbles twice against the Jaguars we seen it against Daryl bacon Daryl bacon Daryl Baker getting cut or or benched excuse me after a PO performance and now we see Shaq Leonard
He gets cut after running his mouth to the media I mean I think that’s all it comes down to what do you think yeah I’m I’m going to say the word interesting because I’m buying your theory uh on the accountability and I like that um I also
Kind of curious because uh you know there it feels like there’s got to be some more stuff to this maybe in the next 24 hours we’ll find out some of the locker room some of the behind the scenes I gota feel like the other veterans on the team uh had to sign off
On this because this isn’t a move that you make uh to you know like you say hold people accountable yes but those veterans man they are like a fraternity they’re like a Brotherhood and and when you mess with one of them man you can lose that that locker room quick so I
Got to think some of these other veterans on this team said yeah you know sha just got to go uh the stuff that he was saying publicly he was probably saying just maybe twice as much or or more behind the scenes you know there
Was a I think a promise um you know that he was GNA get more snaps here in November and uh you know maybe he was just barking about that or just complaining about that and you know didn’t have any of that see that that happening the bottom line and and what
We’ve been saying all all year is we kind of saw this writing on the wall coming he just lost a step he he’s just not the same guy and uh whether he got cut now or he’s going to get cut at the end of this season he was not going to
Be a CT for much longer and I think Shane saw an opportunity here with the approval of the vets and made a move for for the future of this club and the culture yeah that’s a really good point I seen T Y Hilton tweeting about it Kenny Moore posting tweets Z Franklin
Just some guys who’ve been on the team for a couple of years all kind of share their goodbyes with them uh an interesting thing I also scen Shaq is actually handed out turkeys for an Indianapolis charity thing uh even after he got cut kind of kind of cool that he
Did that but of course the media seen him and you know he was asked about and he said he was told on Monday so yesterday that he was going to be inactive for the game this week and and then you know he got cut today and from
What I’m reading and hearing uh he did not request to be uh released this was a this was a Personnel decision by the Colts so it’s not like he asked to be released yeah do you find it odd at all that it’s coming after the bye um you know
Obviously the inactive part on Monday uh that’s again that would have been news in itself that would have been an interesting thing to understand with that maybe that’s what triggered this that he just you know reacted so poorly to it um but do you find it odd the
Timing of this at all yeah I do I think that’s a good point I to me after that Patriots game seems like it would have been a good time you know you got you got a whole week to kind of plan but but the truth is it’s not like you’re
Cutting a guy who is a high performer on your team anyway I mean he was getting limited snaps and when he was on the field he was not an elite player um so I’m guessing they’re just assuming hey we’ll get some of these young guys some
Snaps and and kind of it’s not like he was a Difference Maker anyway um I do one one thing that I do find interesting uh looking forward to next season or this offseason the Colts are going to have right around $90 million in salary cap roughly um I know there’s other
Moves they got to resign some guys y yada so even with that Jonathan Taylor contract this this sha Leonard being released really frees up a lot of cap space for the future uh and we could talk about that later on but the Colts are going to have a lot of flexibility
To improve this roster uh come this off season yeah no I I think that’s gonna be exciting I think it’s going to be again kind of a another exciting offseason last year was exciting for the turnaround I think this is going to be kind of the the rebuild 2.0 type thing
But uh you know I just I guess I get worried just a little bit with injuries you know that that can happen at any time and and now you’ve got basically uh Franklin and speed are your two main guys if one of those guys goes down or
We lose both those guys uh now the Colts are really kind of struggling there um but again you know and I mentioned a little bit we don’t want to talk too much about it but the way the things have have shaped out with some injuries happening in the AFC some teams coming
Back down Colts are sitting there at five and five and and you know they’ve got everything to play for so this is not a like Hey we’re rebuilding building we we’re playing for the next year they got to play for this year and there’s something that happened uh with with sha
Leonard that that they just thought this is not good that he’s on this roster uh I’m again I’m just really curious I’m I’m hoping we get some news in the next 24 hours of of what’s going on yeah well I think when you’re trying to build a
Culture if you got a guy who’s a cancer you got to get him out no matter what they did for your franchise um and I really think just like you said if he said it to the media imagine what he’s saying maybe to co coaches to other
Players to other staff member whoever it is I mean I it’s sad but and maybe I’m not saying it’s all on him maybe the Colts made some false promises or some promises that they maybe they shouldn’t have made in terms of play time not knowing but regardless this is a message
From Shane styken and Chris Ballard uh that this is the NFL and and you got to make sure you you fit our culture so let us know what you think guys in the comments below obviously big news for the Colts is sha Leonard no longer an Indianapolis Colt ended of an era in
Indianapolis so let us know what you think we appreciate you watching our show and until next time have a great day
