Now are the presidents of the Memphis area alumni chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated with me are brother Anthony branch and Alexander Marshall, a whole lot of black up here because I am a member, a lifetime member of this organization and proud to be this year,
Alpha celebrates our 117th founder’s day with a slate of events and we’ll get to those in just a little bit. But first, let’s talk about some of the programs that Alpha presents here in this area. Well, one of the programs is uh go to high school, go to college, go to high school,
Go to college. What we’re doing is focusing on young people that are in high school but are going to college and, and trying to help to uh develop a pathway for them. We’ve done an AC T workshop for them. We’ve done a black male conference for those students so
That we can focus on what is it to apply for college and what are the things that they need to put in place to be young men and responsible young. And so so, so some of those are some of the great things that we’re doing to make sure that we
Are developing young people uh in our city so that they can be prepared for the future. And you say city and we’re spread out across the city, even in Bartlett. Brother Alexander is the president of the chapter there. Some of the programs that are, that are running in that part of town. So
In addition to um go to high school, go to college, we also have what’s called Project Alpha. And so we helped the young man to understand their role in the prevention of teenage pregnancy. So it’s a heart to heart conversation about their bodies about things that are gonna be happening with their bodies.
But most of all, it’s about the responsibility that comes along with being a young man. Absolutely. And with those programs, there’s a lot of focus on young black men in our community, an important thing to do at this time, especially uh talk about that and why we need that some more.
It’s important because there are so many uh different things in the world in our city that are uh catching the attention of our young men. And one of the things we need to do is help to uh divert them from those, those eels that, that prevent them from advancing in life.
So therefore, walking alongside of them in in mentoring programs, making sure that we have black males in their life so that they can give examples of what it is to live, right? What it is to make good choices and also to what it is to be a,
A young man growing into your, your own image. Absolutely. Well, December 4th 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha was founded on the campus of Cornell University. We’re celebrating once again 117 years. This weekend, lots of things going on, talk about it. And this is the first year for a joint celebration for the fraternity.
Yeah, absolutely excited about uh being able to join forces. Uh Ad Ls 90 something years old got been serving the Greater Memphis area. Um Srlc Miro Lada is uh four years old. We just got chartered about four years ago and we’re serving the Bartlett, Germantown, Cordova Carer
Area. So it gives us an opportunity to spread the work of Alpha across the entire city and across the county. And so what will we be doing this weekend? Uh 11 thing we’ll be doing, the first thing is, is, is tomorrow uh at the West.
We are, it’s from six until midnight, from 6 to 9. We will have jazz and then from nine until midnight, there will be a DJ. Um Just, just a time in which other uh members of the Divine nine, as well as brothers of Alpha phi Alpha can come together just to socialize,
Have a good time and just uh reminisce on, on the, on the great things that we’re doing in our city through the efforts of all of the fraternities, sororities. And Sunday is the Founder’s Day program. We can’t forget that is correct. So, Founders Day happening Sunday, three o’clock Metropolitan Baptist Church
And uh got a great program um plan, got an exciting speaker that’s come, come and speak to us, inviting the entire community to come and join us to come, join us this weekend and stay up to date with all the programs and events for Alpha Phi Alpha.
