Episode welcome to the oldfashioned Masonic podcast where we talk all things Free Masons while drinking an oldfashioned I’m Brian and I’m Russ Russ looky what we have here yes sir little different than normal we’re a little more casual than normal right but a heavy hitter nonetheless introduce who
We have here all right so today on our podcast we have brother Raul tanguma welcome welcome well hello good you guys have you seen any of the episodes before I watched a couple of them when you first told me about it I can’t remember who one was the sheriff gentleman yeah North
I think North Kansas somewhere yeah yeah that would have probably been our grand master would that have been Mardy Rob mclary possible yeah uh and there was another one right just in series after that no worries so it’s good we like to catch people off guard just in case so
Uh I’ve known Raul for uh quite some time and we’ll talk later about how we first officially met that there’s some kind of fun story so but we like to know as much about the man as we do the Mason so push the Masonic stuff to the side who’s Raul the
Man oh uh it’s kind of a condensed version I was born in Corpus Christie Texas moved to Kansas in 1982 okay uh man I I don’t have been here since uh started uh in screen print shops working like some of the first jobs I had which
Is kind of first in art art Job Art job uh screen printing then uh ended up uh doing some electrical work for a while then got into tattooing and I’ve been doing that the last 20 years kids married yep we got to save you so we
Save you dress we got you girl we got you there’s a lot yeah yeah thanks man good uh yeah I have two boys uh one’s 29 and one’s 19 uh both of them in witch um yeah that’s you know my two kids uh so 29 19 so you got 29 he he
Would be sort of at the end of that Millennial Z so what’s the difference between the two of them oh yeah they they’re night day definitely but we had 10 years of raising a kid already to raise a second one so it’s a lot easier a second one’s easier I
Think of child yeah yeah 10 years and there’s a lot to learn what to do and what not to do or how to do whatever true the first one takes all of the punishment right yeah so they’re they’re definitely night and day but I’ve done I’ve been tattooing 20 years so my
Youngest son his whole life this is all I’ve done so I’ve got a lot of free time to spend with him and he in the shop too he he was yeah he’s worked in the shop of course pretty much all his life yeah um no he’s framing metal metal buildings
Right now in Kansas City yeah yeah he’s he’s enjoying it man he really enjoys being outside and doing it so I love it I love it yeah so nice at this point once their adults I think you just kind of let them go and hope they’re doing
Well and happy you do you know you just hope that you that Foundation Happ yeah I hope I did everything hope Society doesn’t look back at you and go yeah you really screwed up exactly well you know we’ve all got one of those in my life sorry about that
So let’s talk about your Masonic Journey then so tell us from from the beginning to what’s going on today uh so when I was electrician I met a gentleman by the name Steve Woodruff that I worked with um ien I haven’t seen Steve in many many years uh since since
I came in really hasn’t been that I don’t think he was ever that active at the lodge uh but I had asked him about it we talked about it at the job um I also had a little bit of knowledge about the Shriners cuz my oldest son was was a
Shriner’s baby his grandfather okay um his mom’s dad was a Shriner so that’s how we got into that he had a deformed hand when he was born so they’ve pretty much took care of him all the way never knew that about you so uh yeah so I kind of knew I knew
About that and that was before I had joined uh when he was a baby lot long time ago so uh yeah so I kind of had a knowledge of that and then uh you know kind of kind of a little bit of a knowledge of what you see or read uh you
Know what I mean so was curious about it and everything and so then you finally petition right petitioned uh got accepted into the lodge uh immediately got in line as a Tyler and then I I’ve sat all the chairs all the way up for seven years to master 2010 uh sunflower
Lodge 86 uh in so I was a master in 2010 I came in then would have been around 2003 mhm uh and like I said immediately got in line and sat in all the chairs um and really enjoyed it you know my original idea was to join because the
Shrine cuz I had heard about all the cool parties they had and all that stuff and I was like yeah that’s definitely I mean I joined because I wanted to for the same reason yeah and so uh but it turned out that I never joined the
Shrine I don’t I’m not a member of the shrine I never joined it uh because I got involved with the blue Lodge and I really really enjoyed all of what was there I fig I kind of thought everything’s right there you know what I mean when yeah so well when uh when I
Came in late 2009 and then in the 2010 I started doing degree work we heard there’s this younger guy over there he’s the master at Pyramid and he he kind of looks like us I mean he’s young he’s got ink and we’re just like wait what
They’re not they’re not a bunch of old guys in there that are just all buttoned up no he’s like us so that was kind of that energy that Chang when I joined I was definitely one of the younger guys in the laws there’s a lot of older guys
And I’ve you know a lot of guys that have passed away since I’ve been there but um definitely was one of the younger guys and and uh you know now I’m not of course but uh but it’s good to see younger people joining I think it’s really hard to get get people interested
In something you know what I mean I was always interested in the history and and then you start doing the degrees and you learn some of that stuff that’s in it some of the work and then it’s like oh it’s then it’s well that was the other
Thing we heard about you is he’s proficient he knows what’s going on he he’ll do the degree work in the in the East and like I love doing that stuff man so you had a name out of the Gat so you inspired a lot of us younger guys
Were like well [ __ ] he’s paav in the way we’ve got to do it we’re this guy can do it no it was all that this guy like so he’s like well he’s representing Our Generation so we’ve got to go in and represent so it really kind of put that
And that’s I hly that’s how I feel about a lot of things like if I can do it you know what I mean I think almost any anybody I don’t know if I discounted that I feel like you’re discounted it a little bit but fair we’ll play the game
Um well so yeah cheers we uh yeah yeah thanks for kind of Paving the way for for what we call our young guys at the time so yeah so in addition to just working her way through through the ranks and um pretty active in Brazilian jiu-jitsu
Right yeah man for how long for uh almost 10 I think like I think I started when I was like 30 just before 40 38 39 yeah so almost 10 years something like that but I’ve taken a few years off that’s right here and there um you were
In uh we were in Las Vegas at the same time I was there for something else and you were there for I was there for a whole week man I wish I would have known man yeah yeah I knew should cross pass because we’ saw cuz there there’s a huge
Competition out there yeah yeah there was yeah world’s competition deal I I competed I lost right off the bat but you know what I mean you put yourself in it’s like let’s do it i’ I’ve competed other like the pans in uh La when I first started was like in 2016 and and
One out there but do this what do you I mean besides helping to stay in shape and all that what what kind of message like for the young people do you do you think every young person should try it man I at Le every female I think I think
Everybody should males females I think the younger you are when you start the better uh I started my son really early he was wrestling at 4 and then we started in the Jiu-Jitsu when he was younger and then he took off kind of he he doeses so so he took off um high
School for Jiu-Jitsu but now he’s getting back into it again so uh and I’ve always explained to him like first first we’re training for self-defense to learn how to protect yourself the people you love you care about your family secondly for Fitness you know what I
Mean stay in shape and third if you want to compete as you know competitors and stuff then you know we could do that but mainly self-defense you know I think everybody should at least be able to protect yourself in some way or another you know what I mean yeah yeah so quick
Question I have two questions about you being a tattoo artist so what’s the craziest tattoo that you’ve ever done and two what’s the craziest place you’ve ever put one man I mean so people have always asked about the craziest tattoo I’ve ever done just for the sake of pod podcasting
You say whatever you want wa but wherever you want say whatever you want this isn’t this isn’t made for kids I’ve done some I’ve done some crazy stuff man uh but a lot of it is like I always tell people it’s relative like what do you what do you think’s crazy
I mean as far as as far as places uh I mean I’ve tattooed almost all of the B on on a female I’ve never tattooed a guy junk never okay no man that’s not you know what I mean cuz you got to hold it and I don’t want to hold anybody else
Okay all right never never actually I would have thought he would have tattoed no I don’t know that I would have so all right yeah but you got never going to bet against you no no like elephant ears around or anything no no even that I’ve done like my buddies
Like right above here you know but I usually put a towel down just cuz you’re laying on their junk you know which well I mean youj Didu you know what I mean you’re all up on but it’s just a different it’s just a little different thing so have you ever had somebody
Request a tattoo that you weren’t to hip on doing but you did because of the placement or the not the placement just what it represented and you were and you did it anyway no no if I don’t want to do something I’m pretty you just
Go no I’m not I like it does make difference it’s your own business yeah there’s so many tattooers out there you know if you want some crazy somewhere opposite of what our belief system may be I mean there’s there’s tattoos that most shops just don’t do I
Mean back in the days you know no gang tattoos you know no crazy uh racist stuff you know with swas and all that you any that sort of crazy really that everybody kind of knows is not right you know that’s just a professionalism thing I think most of
Those people have their own tattoo artist right somewhere you know so did I understand this correctly can you buy a damn tattoo gun off of Amazon now you can buy anything you want I mean it’s Amazon stre oh my God on all right all right what do you want
We look it up right now yeah you can go into business we can just lay somebody out right here on they’ve really made it easy man tattooing is easy for bad tattoos you mean well easy for people to get started in it okay fair you know what I mean so
They’ve changed the machines are a different type of machine you have the old loud coiled you know uh those are old those have been going on since 1800s Maybe scared people away too probably just that sound possibly yeah yeah I mean think of the the generation you
Know what I mean they’re scared of everything so surely so that’s so true so if you have now they made it it’s like a pen shape basically now and it’s a it’s cordless you know what I mean real easy you don’t have to work up your
Hand it took me like 5 years probably have tattooing just to get these muscles enough to balance this heavy machine around you know now it’s real light I mean it’s like the transition from to learn how to tattoo and become a tattoo it’s a lot easier than it was
Also everything’s available man there’s no there’s no secrets to the trade anymore all right yeah they just they just gave them away to everybody man just let everybody tattoo I don’t know I think I think I think if you gave me a tattoo gun I’m not going to put out some
Of the work that you put out so you know but here’s what I always tell people is technically it’s a mechanical process I could teach you how to tattoo I could teach you to put something on in skin okay what whatever you still have to have an artistic ability to to color it
Shade it and you can color it and shade it one way but it might not look as good as someone that has because The Strokes are different well just the way it’s done you know what I mean might not have as might not look as good as somebody
That’s an artist per se well the Skin’s different too how it hits in the skin too right yeah everybody’s skin is different so that’s a l I guarantee you if I if he taught me I’d still have just some blob you know just this F folks stay with us because I’m going
To lure Russ into a bet that’s going to involve a tattoo and R here like no you know you could ask me hey Russ would you ever get a tattoo and I would say I would entertain it I know that I I we’ve had that discussion but
There’s no way on God’s green earth that if we said Russ let’s have a a a bet for a tattoo that but I get to pick it and the placement you would say hell to the no right you don’t even need to ask too wild for that I wouldn’t want you to do
That to me either because i’ have some weird eyeball on my eyeball or something all right so back to the superpower so we get some kind of fun questions here and there if you could have any superpower in the world what would you want it to be in why holy [ __ ] that’s a
H this could be made up kind of superow I mean I mean sound good I mean you want to heal all the heal heal all the oh you want for good okay I like that wouldn’t that be the you have me like I get into crazy yeah that probably get tiring see it
Would we talked about that cuz then we referenced what would women want um it get man even if you could you just hear people I don’t want to hear what half these people are talking about you know what I mean okay you talked me out of
That one yeah you talked me out of that one cuz I don’t want anybody to ever actually read my mind see there’s that especially sometimes when we’re here with each other yeah they know what my mind is reading towards you sometimes no they see it they see it all right so we asked
This a lot of guests and I think it’s just sort of fun and in in other hosts and other formats have asked this question a lot so living or or basically living or dead you who would you like to have a meal with that you’ve never had before
So somebody anybody famous a family member anybody that you’ve never had a meal with before living or dead I mean I I really like the grateful Dad and HRI you know what I mean it with Jerry Garcia or Jimmy HRI you imagine yeah crazy we’ve not heard that one everyone
Goes see this is why we like the mix because we hear well you know there’s Harry Truman and there George Jerry Garcia or HRI that would be that’s pretty cool Fair like like Garcia and Hendrick man that time J Garcia most especially man like yeah oh man can you
Imagine the stories yeah they’re part of that they would not be made for TV and this is being shot in November Hendrick Hendrick and he was um an army veteran yep yep yep so I bet you didn’t think I’d pull that outro yes he was yeah y yeah all right
So little tough question we don’t get super controversial but we we we’ve asked this question recently what do you think’s wrong with Freemasonry today I don’t think there’s or what could be improved upon yeah I mean I guess marketing is what what we’re talking about Fair okay I mean really
It’s you know we’re we’re in an age where marketing has changed a whole lot you know what I mean keeping people’s attention for people make videos are 30 seconds long you know what I mean because you can’t keep that attention span so uh a lot of it is marketing but
Then I think you have a generation it’s instant gratification so if there’s not an immediate benefit that they see from it then I think people are like well you know so you think we’re going to struggle with this generation possibly if we don’t change the way that
We maybe talk to them yeah they speak a different language so to speak that’s for sure I mean you know groovy is not the same as you know what I mean like no absolutely yeah just the slang alone but I mean I feel like if you’re not here
You’re nowhere right right yeah that’s for most for most younger people for sure but I think uh they got I guess sometimes I think it Mas sure people find their own purpose of why they join what is it you know and it’s different for everybody so you
Might you find that with and you know what is what is the main reason you know I mean a lot of it is curiosity because I think a lot of people don’t know about it initially you know what I mean so uh you hear lot about these secrets you
Know everybody wants to know secrets you know what I mean everybody wants to be in on the secrets the the mystery the so so I mean that’s I think that gets people but then it’s like how do you how do you you know how do you harness it
And and how do then how do you keep them interested yeah all right yeah tattoos have been around a long time but it seems like the last 20 years they’ve really taken off I actually I’ll tell you a funny story my son um and he was
An adult at the time shows up and he goes and he had a couple tattoos and Spencer did oh yeah I didn’t know and so he said well yeah I’m trying those out that’s not a real tattoo and I was like how stupid do you think I
Am it’s like yeah I’m trying it out and it washes off it’s like did did you immediately know that they were fake yeah they’re not fake they were real from the get go oh okay okay I was stupid then real from to get go and I
Knew it and he was just he thought that he get one over yeah and was like so both of my kids have have ink but there was sort of a for a while that wasn’t popular and now it’s just it’s taken off why is that what do you think man fadish
Definitely okay definitely and I think that’s so most people don’t realize but I think in the ’90s Dennis Rodman had a big influence on the whole tattoo I he was the first guy out on television every night playing bow whatever team of the generation looking crazy looking weird tattooed and
Everything uh then you had you know like Axel Rose you know and that does you know so it starting to get out there in the piercing too was then getting out there in the ’90s uh and it slowly it just got better little more main a little more socially
Accepted you know My Views have changed a lot over the years you know my my staff no visible anything um but you know now times have changed it’s you know we have business in Austin and Houston and just your pool like now it’s was like wait a minute dude I go to the
Bank and the tellers they’re covered in tattoos right well and and you a lot like the witto police department for example they loosen theirs because their policy was you know not but then they wanted to hire hire to be the makeup of Witchita well you know the makeup of
What shall they have ink yeah you know I’ve tattooed like I said for the last 20 years so I’ve tattooed through the different rules they’ve had for the military you know for the police department they’ve all they’ve cycled in 20 years of what it could be it used to
Be you have to cover it with your hand the military then it can’t be more than a certain percentage of whatever body part it’s on right so stay tuned in September we’re going to be talking with Raul about the history of tattoos and how those policies have changed with the
Military it’s fascinating yeah it’s changed over slowly slowly and I think now it’s like think pretty much what’s interesting because as we were doing research for the September episode hand tattoos are even allowed now and there’s some the AR 670-1 any army guys out there that know
If you had to do Soldier the year boards or any sort of promotion boards that’s a a that’s your army rig so you have to know that so um but yeah it’s changed right so yeah so I’ve got a would you rather not a bird would you rather
Because a bird would you rather can never make a podcast C so but here’s a would you rather would you rather have a line of all proficient B card a card unlimited card holders or a line full of inspirational and motivational leaders in your Lodge you can only have one or
The other the hybrid’s the right answer but you can only have one all card holders or all motivational and inspirational leaders who I like the Proficiency in work you like proficiency okay I like you know what I mean uh I think in itself maybe for some people that could be motivational
Inspiration okay so you you want them decked out when they come in just boom boom boom Oh my gosh they’re always on point yeah all right I like it I like it I like it you know the right answer obviously is the hybrid of Mall yeah oh
Yeah yeah but but you know you didn’t get that option it was the true would you rather so so if you had a magic wand today and um but today you do you just have one and you could change something within masonry or fix something that you
Go I think that should be fixed within Kansas masonry what would you just go I’m going to change it today did you like the sound effect I did I mean it’s hard you know I I really enjoy masonry so I don’t you do you you
You you really are but I mean what would you improve to day I mean everything it needs a little tweak here and there doesn’t have to be a drastic change is it our marketing well I mean that’s that’s a uh should we be able to recruit well that’s that’s a quantity
Versus quality situation I love that see that’s that’s the bait you took the bait so I know we we like we like quality over quantity right you know I would rather have 10,000 great Masons than 20,000 okay Masons right right right so I I agree with that you just recruit in
The right pool Fair yeah it’s the right pool right that’s subjective too right what is right you know yeah it’s hard it’s a hard one right yeah I don’t I don’t know right off the bat there’s anything I think of like oh this is definitely wrong would
You want more people to do Masonic funerals so you and Tabet aren’t doing them all the time so those who don’t know Masonic funerals are a very important piece of what we do that’s kind of our last thing for brother and uh Bob talit Jim Ralston um John French
There’s a lot of guy and you are a you you do a lot of masonic funerals I’ve done a lot of them you’ve done a lot um and one I I I don’t it’s it’s important think that’s one of the biggest it’s it’s it’s an honor to be
Able to do it for sure it’s awful you know when people pass of course but definitely I feel really good uh being able to do that for brothers as their last request So Adam on Sonic fun have you ever had a hard time getting through one because that youve maybe known
Because you either known them or or just the setting or something affected you emotionally or do you just no so uh I I haven’t uh I I did the brother the Jim DeBerry uh was an old brother that uh yep that taught me uh the funeral
Service so I’d do it the way he taught me basically um I used to go with him because I was tattooing so I had free time and there weren’t a lot of people that take that many days off to go do them so I went with him uh to do the
Funeral services he taught me how to do them and I ended up doing his funeral service yeah and so of the ones that were probably the more difficult that was probably the most difficult did you hear his voice as you were doing it like okay got to do this next did you just
Kind not hear it but did you feel like okay I’ve got to do this and yeah yeah well I mean i’ said I do it for the most part the way he did it the exact way that he showed me but you got your own player too yeah so so yeah and it’s
Interesting for non-masons out there that are listening today you know we know masons in a lot of different lodges and a lot of different states and whatnot but you know I knew him just I’d met him a couple times but the second you named him I could visualize him and
And you instantly he left the mark in Mason very much so y he did he was uh really like old school Mason you know oh yeah you you got that old school so if folks were looking at you you know because you know we kind of Judge at
First they wouldn’t think that you you are about as old school of a Mason as there could be from the new school right of our gener you really have that old school protected Purity it needs to be this way and that’s the cool thing that I that I mean it’s like well there’s
Nothing wrong I mean I mean this has been this way for 200 years and this is the way we’re going to do it and I want everyone to do it this way and I love the old school Vibe because you since I’ve known you you’ve always had that
Vibe you know it’s I don’t want to say it’s unwavering but just like this is what works for me well yeah uh I think that history a lot of it was passed on not really we can’t you can’t write it down Fair yeah you know what I
Mean so it was it was passed down that that way verbally and as soon as you stray from that it’s no longer the same if you if you start changing any of that it’s not the same a true purist yeah you know when it was passed down verbally
Fair is what I think so all right so we’re going to lighten it up we’re going to lighten it up here Thanksgiving has just passed so we have to uh most important question of the day so up on the screen we have four things FKS that
You’ll see you got turkey cook the way that you like it pumpkin pie casserole or stuffing whatever you call it dressing dressing or stuffing it’s not Castle stuffing hey easy you don’t gang up on and ham one of them has to go forever roll it was never invented what
Is it and why uh that the the P pumpkin pie got to go not my not my thing no pumpkin pie or just pie in general pumpkin pie pumin pie would it’s all mushy yeah what pie would would you put a pie in its place or cake or
What would you put in put a peach cobbler up there yeah all right so the pumpkin pie got to go we had a lot of pumpkin pie Russ and I you know what we get rid of it’s not popular we get rid of the turkey turkey the turkey yeah I
Just Russ need do Turkey this I’m not a big turkey fan honestly but okay all I have boycotted it this year oh my God boycott well that’s enough boycot Hey fried turkeys oh area the best thanks thanks for coming on thanks for watching thank you thank you what did you think of this
