Assembled there Comes A Time in life when in the Fulfillment of man’s Destiny we must bid a final farewell to the hopes the aspirations the joys and the Sorrows of mortal life and we realize poignantly that the severance of the bonds of friendship and affection is attended with profound sorrow to those who
Remain so once again we stand by the side of one who has passed through through the open door into life Immortal once again from sincere Hearts we speak a message of love and sympathy to those who are bered we would comfort them as we ourselves have been comforted with those Eternal truths upon
Which Freemasonry rests belief in God and faith in immortality God was in the beginning even before light was and he spoke into being the world and all that therein is recognizing that his never-failing Providence orderthe and Earth we as Masons invoke his Divine assistance at the beginning of all our
Undertakings respectable night president tell it lead us in our prayers let us pray oh merciful and loving father who has made our present life but temporary and has decreed that the pains and Sorrows of suffering virtue the misery of the oppressed and the tyranny of the wicked shall not be
Perpetual we thank thee for the assurance and Consciousness which thou H has implanted in us that thou do exist and that we are not annihilated when thou withdraw from our body thy Breath of Life and while the Earth by thy will takes into its bosom these mortal
Remains and they are dissolved and Unite with the clay the air and the running water to enter into new and everchanging combinations may we continue in firmly hoping and believing that the very self of our brother is with thee and Immortal and that thou will pity and forgive his
Errors and reward him for his labors in the cause of Truth and virtue amen amen amen and amen Almighty father of the universe before whom all creative intelligence shall bow in re revelation Almighty father before whom all creative intelligence should bow in Humble alteration enable us thy needy creature
To approach thee in this hour of Affliction with a reverential awe that is due from a creature to a Creator look with pity and compassion we beseech thee upon the sorrows and afflictions of the relatives and Friends of this deceased brother Comfort them oh Father with a
Sense of thy goodness lift upon them the light of thy continence and give them peace may they be disposed to say from the depths of their heart the lord gave and the Lord has taken away blessed be the name of the Lord and oh God whose days are Without End and whose mercies
Cannot be numbered make us all all we humbly beseech thee deeply sensible of the shortness and uncertainty of human life may the impressive scene now before us induce us to be wise while we may and prepare for a speedy departure through that undiscovered land from whose born no traveler return
Amen amen am am our brother has finished his Earthly probation death is the inexorable creditor whose Indulgence nothing in this world can purchase every moment that sees a newborn child laugh at the light sees also a man die and here’s the Cry of an aching heart and the Lamentations of those who
Sit lonely and in the desolation of Affliction no longer seeing faces of dearly loved ones round the little island of our being upon which we follow our various Pursuits of toil or craft or usefulness or mischief throbs the illimitable ocean of Eternity upon which round the aisle a broad circle of impenetrable
Darkness brooding lies but beyond that zone the outer ocean Sparkles and its white Crest waves dance in the light and somewhere in the distance the island of the Blessed Are Dreaming girdled by the Peaceful Waters here in our present home we live our little lives waiting to be called to other duties
Elsewhere and one by one our loved ones and our cherished friends Glide away from us unseen and are swallowed up in the darkness which is the shadow of the broad wings of death each of us belongs ons to some little colony of hearts that ha a life of its own a
Private and inner life apart from that of the mass of humanity which edies round it in Endless agitation having with it no sympathies nor any memories of Association when one of its members dies it is as if a limb has been severed from the body the wound
Heals but the limb is missed as long as the body lives thus has the body of our order been here mutilated today and therefore we mourn respectable night pret now as in all other hours of trial may we be comforted by some of the precious words from the book of our religion
The Souls of the righteous are in the hands of God no torment shall touch them they are at peace and their hope is full of immortality they were honored in their generation and were the glory of their times the bodies are buried in peace but the names live forever more for we
Know that if the Earthly House of our Tabernacle be dissolved we have a building from God a house not made with hands Eternal in the heavens I had not seen no ear had not heard neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for them that love
Him the Lord is my shepherd I share and I want he maketh me to lie down in Green Pastures he leadth me beside Still Waters he restoreth my soul he leads me in the path of righteousness for his name’s sake yeah though I walk through the valley of the
Shadow of death I will fear no evil for thou with me thy rod and thy staff they comfort me thou prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemy th anoint my head with oil my cup runneth over surely goodness and mercy shall follow
Me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever with me f for the even time the darkness deep Lord with me AB when of the helpers f and Comfort help of the helpless oh with me our brother has passed beyond the sounds of our voices and the touch of our hands but he has not passed beyond the reach of memory and love in the lodge of perfection he was taught to distinguish between the things of time and the
Glories of Eternity he learned that Justice and righteousness are Eternal that a character built upon honor and duty is deathless and that love and memory can not die they are not gone who pass beyond the clasp of hands out from the close Embrace we are but come so
Close we need not grope with hands to look to see nor try to catch the sounds of feet they have put off their shoes softly to walk by Day within our thoughts to tread at night our dreamled paths of sleep they are not lost to find the Sunset
Gate the goal of all their faithful years not lost are they who reach the summit of their climb the Peaks above the clouds and storm they are not lost to find the light of sun and stars and God this once busy brain is still and
Dead it will plan no more its work is done May the grace of our father who is in heaven bless the soul of which it was the instrument these eyes will no longer look upon Earth man oh These Eyes will no longer look upon the
Sun the stars of the Earth or the faces of other men may the blessing of Our Father who is in heaven make our brother to see the truth more clearly in the new life put your flow here put your flow in the thank you you’re welcome this heart no longer beats and
It sto forever no feeling or affection are his tenants now may Our Father who is in heaven forgive the weakness and reward the generous loving kindness of our brother the work of these hands is done May our brother for all their true and Earnest work find favor With Our Father who is in
Heaven thank you the feet of our brother would know more go on errands of Mercy nor follow the dead to the Grave nor tread the fleety path their work is done and may Our Father who is in heaven keep our brothers feet in the true way I love lay Upon This
Heart which is now still and cold the jewel which our brother while living always were with honor and may the influence of our brother for good that does survive him be continually expanded and increased to benefit his fellow man and may Our Father who is in heaven in his
Wisdom counteract and Anno all those that tend to evil so M it be amen amen amen and all around I see oh thou Chang with me in all ages and with all peoples the ring has been considered an emblem of fidelity and constancy and for this reason it is appropriately employed in
The many ceremonies to typify unswerving allegiance to one’s engagement its form reminds us of Eternity for it is without beginning and without ending and it speaks to us of the goodness of all wise Providence of the Creator from within the circle of whose love we dwell and teaches us that these
Are the duties to God our neighbors and ourselves which surrounds us at all times conted from pure gold it serves admirably to direct our attention to the things which are precious and desirable and to exclude those which are but draws to those of the Scottish right of
Freemasonry the ring has these and many other meetings it binds the brother to the order and to all that it signifies and upon the hand which is now quiet and Powerless it was a constant reminder of those attributes he valued so highly the just and upright life he led honored the
Fraternity and we may with reason conclude that this ring was ever an inspiration in his sight our brother has completed the cycle of his Earthly existence having unswervingly adhered to the tenants of the order it now becomes our duty to fulfill for him his final obligation as the representative of the presiding officer
Of the order I place in the keeping of the one for whom it was destined our brothers ring although apparently silent it yet speaks for him and this is its message through all the years to come should sorrow or Misfortune ever come to your door let this ring be constant
Assurance that you have at your command FR Eternal friendship and assistance which shall never fail our brother is absent for a while but he leaves with you this message of comfort through this golden symbol my Brethren the duty we owed the dead is performed it remains that we who are alive should so live and by our actions so attend the coming of the day of faith that we neither be surprised nor leave our sins uncan know our duties imperfect know our persons unreconcile nor God
Unappeased but that when our bodies in their turns descends to their graves our souls May Ascend to the regions of Eternal Light wherein is the Holy House of the Heavenly Temple of the Lord our departed Freer has left us a legacy of a Wells spent life I must admonish you that we his
Legatees receive the same for our Soul’s good for the lessons with death continually repeats are impatiently listened to and soon forgotten and so it has been since the making of the world and so it will be until the end men will continue to live riotously and toil and
Plot as if they were never to die and as unconcernedly seeing others carry to their graves as the Green Leaves of an oak sees a single leaf wither and drop untimely in the summer let us implore the help of the father of all men and Masons that it be not so with us
Venus has lit her silver lamp low in the purple West casting a soft and mellow light upon the Sea’s full breast in one clear path as if to guide some pale wayf firing guest far out far out the Restless bar starts from a troubled sleep where roaring through the narrow Straits
The meeting Waters leap but still that shining pathway leads across the lonely deep when I Sail Out that narrow straight where unknown dangers be and cross the troubled moaning bar to the mysterious sea dear God wilt thou not set Al lamp low in the West for me oh grandm of the
Universe which is thy home grant that we here before thee may be set free from the fear of vicissitudes and the fear of death death may we finish what remains before us of our course without dishonor to ourselves or hurt to others and when the day come may we die in

Think of his community development in neighborhood development Ministries which most of you are familiar with I got to know Dr Adams in 2010 on May 1st of 2010 President Barack Obama gave the commencement address at the University of Michigan in the big house Dr Adams was there
On his way out of the stadium he met up with a moous man Henry Johnson who was on the pvm board the two of them talked about this property on Meyers Road and seven years later Hartford Village became a reality it was it was the vision the Insight the foresight the
Passion that drove us forward to now be serving over a hundred people at Hartford Village the Scottish right Masons talked about the good that lives on the greater good that lives on and you see that in so many ways Hartford Village is just one of those ways thank you Dr Adams for

Continued blessings on all of [Applause] You if you don’t recognize me because I’m a little whiter than I used to be Reverend Jeremiah wght reminded me that in San Francisco when he called me fat at Third Baptist Church there I’m Reverend Dr D Mark Wilson youth Minister here between the years of 1985 and
1992 I wonder can you remember it was like to be a teenager like 18 years old where you have so many struggles trying to figure out should you go this way or that way and how you can combine all the stuff in the world who am I I came to
Harford at 18 years old in the midst of a dilemma where there was one group of church members telling me don’t go to college don’t go to Seminary because uh the learning will take away your burning and then when went to college at Howard they were saying why are you
Going down to that church then like they’re going to take away your critical thinking and then I met my pastor Dr Charles gilr Adams at 18 years old you know we all should have somebody that we want to emulate and be like because when I came here at 18 in 1978
And 79 for Easter Service and he brought together politics and economics and sociology and psychology and Theology and christology and negoy I mean he brought it all together didn’t he he taught us how to keep on preaching the gospel no matter what happened huh some of you might not remember this but some
Of us do remember when we first laid this this beautiful uh tile right here and he was preaching a sermon the red carpet was gone huh and he was going running across and he slid over here into Jerome Joe’s uh uh drum set got a cut on his head everybody was worried
And nervous but he said that’s all right that’s all right don’t worry about me cuz if Jesus could go all the way to Calvary up go goth plan if Jesus could bear an Old Rugged Cross shed his blood for my sins I Can Shed a little blood for the
Gospel we were thankful for first lady Agnes Allen because she looked at him as if he lost his mind by then and she told one of the deacons sit him down sit him down as a pastor in MC Baptist Church These are the pro Proverbs that he taught me about black church leadership
Things that we will never learn in seminary but we learn through our culture as black preachers and black churches he told me to love love the people and they will love you he said let them win sometimes you don’t have to win all the time and if
You let them win the ones who don’t like you will like you for other things and the one who do like you will hate you for don’t not like you for other things stop looking at those people you say are frowning their faces they may have missed their medication that
Morning or they may have indigested in their stomach count your votes before you go into a controversial meeting because Jesus before he did anything was brought together his disciples to have his back be relational and and if you come out have your struggles one of the most
Important things you taught us was in our sufferings not to get around the sufferings with a whole bunch of Praise but you’ve got to go through your suffering in order to see God in your suffering and I share that with the family and since the musician is given giving me a
Key you can go through your sufferings and sing coming out like him I trust in God I know he cares for me that’s another way on mountain peaks or on the stormy SE Oh I promise not to be before you long I actually mean it this time hello my name is Eugene Kelly II I am the current president of heart for men United I have served in this capacity for over a decade this organization was founded by our Pastor Charles Gilchrist Adams the

Continue to bless this family and the church family forever amen Hi Tara John the boys so good to see you PA as we affectionately called him in the early 1883s I Ronald E Spears and Milton Watson established a church bookstore in the agapy house Hartford Memorial Baptist Church 30 de years later has made some Headway at the with the
Bookstore we are proud to say that our members and Friends May select any sermon concert feel like revivalist soloist because we now have just about everything set so that you can sit get at any part of Pastor Adams sermons anytime and just listen to them from now on
The one thing that I was so proud of Pastor Adams being able to do is he would send one of the deacons to the books to the bookstore and say Pastor Adams wants to see you and I’d get back there and he’d say if you look between the first Sunday in
May and the third Sunday in May you’ll find a certain sermon and when he did that sure enough that’s exactly where it would be and um he would say I got it So PA was just that type of person he he could just do that and it was such a thrill to be able to do it for him and I loved him so much so we want you to take advantage of the bookstore and to always look for what you want
And take it with you we love you all and we want to continue to serve you as long as we can thank you so much thank you all right at this time we’d like to be blessed by another musical selection coming from the Brazil Denard Coral to The Adams Family
Uh our sincerest condolences to you and and uh please know that you are in our thoughts and in our prayers always and that we the Brazil in our Corral consider it to be an honor to serve I happen to know that this next piece in flatus from uh rosini staat mat was one

Birthday I said how old am I and my mother said you’re four I said is that all I said I’m a preacher how can I preach it four years old that was so now I’m wondering how can I preach at 78 years old 79 I grew up in
Detroit in the Hartford Memorial Church I was baptized there in September 1944 my sister and me and we were both baptized on the same day same night same pool and it was very cold and I shivered throughout the whole thing I thought I wasn’t going to
Survive but my grand you’re going to be all right it’s going to be all right it’s going to be over you’re going to be all right so they got me in and they got me out and I have been the same since uh Dr Gordon Blaine Hancock professor of sociology and economics at
Virginia Union University for about 30 or 35 years and he was also Pastor he was a theologian he was pastor of Mo Street Baptist Church Richmond Virginia having taken a master’s degree in anthropology at Harvard and he told me you got to go to Harvard you’ve got to
Go to Harvard there’s no place else for you to go but to Harvard Oh My My My that’s so well you know Uncle Gord he would always be talking about Harvard and Harvard and Harvard and I said it’s not for me I just made up my mind it wasn’t for me so
It hadn’t really moved me that much and I was a pretty good student too but Harvard was a long dream in the back of my Consciousness and I never really thought that I was good enough for that I was U smart enough or Rich enough to go walking up into Harvard University
Expecting to get an education so I did all I could started out at Fisk University which I thoroughly enjoyed deeply loved but at the end of the second year of at Fisk I had a great time I had good grades but my grandmother was breaking
Down and I knew that I needed to be closer than Nashville I said I wonder can I go to the University of Michigan so I applied and I got accepted not only did I get accepted but I got full classification I got all of my first two
Years credit so I could start at Michigan as a junior and I graduated in 58 and with honors and um which was remarkable having gone as a transfer student supposedly having gone to an inferior school but Fisk was not inferior to Michigan I’m here to tell you That when I got to Harvard I was ready history I loved history the historical background of the Bible because the Bible at that time had some of the leading scholars in the history of the ancient near East most notable among whom is a person uh by the name of menen
Hall and Mel Hall was just so full of it he I mean he was full of hebraic thought and hebraic language and hebraic pottery and archaeology miraculously I got called to be the pastor of Concord Baptist Church at the age of 20 on my 26th birthday Lord have
Mercy it was a big big big gigantic huge task because the pastor didn’t have any power he didn’t have power and there’s certain things I wanted to correct foolishly I should have left him alone and just gotten my degree but no I had to try to be Pastor one lady said Reverend
Adams if if you play ball with us we’ll play ball with you I said I didn’t come to play ball I said I came to be the pastor here so uh look at him he ain’t big as a minute and he’s up there trying to be a pastor it’s only God’s grace and
God’s mercy that got me through It I made a place for women in Ministry and there was no one in the world that had been kinder to me than my mother and my grandmother and it didn’t make sense to me that women should be in Seminary and not have a chance to preach
It just didn’t make sense so I said here these are some of the best educated people we have in the race and you’re saying because they are a woman I said Deborah LED Israel she was a woman and Mary was the first Mary Magdalene was the first to see the Risen
Christ and she’s a woman so we wouldn’t have had an Easter gospel it hadn’t been from a woman who was called to tell story and that’s what preaching is and you know but uh there were some people oh you going to put that on us and
Indeed when I was elected I did I made sure that women were on all major committees and led several of them like the program committee and the budget committee and how would you like to be remembered 100 years from now well I’d like to be be be remembered as not a
Great man man but uh a humble servant of God who did some things well sometimes and I think that’s so there’s something here but I can’t tell you what it is and if it’s worth knowing there’ll be somewhere you can read about it and draw your own conclusions [Applause] [Applause] amen amen all right time limit is still in effect tributes good evening everyone my name is Julian goods and I serve here as the organist so I’ll keep my own time um I am uh here though representing the University of Michigan black Alumni Association uh and as we just saw Pastor
Adams in 1958 graduated from the University of Michigan after transferring to Fisk while he was at UFM Dr Adams stayed connected to music by singing in the University of Michigan men’s Glee Club under the direction of Dr Philip dwey he and his sister Edith would later make sure that the
University of Michigan men’s glee club would visit Hartford Church to performing concert and I was fortunate to be in that group when we came in 1986 Dr Adams would receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Michigan and in 2006 Dr Adams would Reed the Leonard F sa esteemed alumni
Award which is given each year to someone who like Dr sa who was an educator in a leader who left a legacy of Human Service and achievement Dr Adams certainly has shown outstanding achievements in uh in service in that field of human endeavor the award was given by the University of Michigan
Black Alumni Association whose president is uh Eugene Kelly uh along with that Dr Adams was a a great advocate for the Arts and the connection between U ofm and Hartford in the Arts uh is impeccable I think to the of organist who have been here Dr Abington who was a
Michigan grad Dr Wayne bar who was here who was a Michigan grad Dr Clark who was a Michigan grad myself who is a two-time Michigan grad uh and this this organ that this church invested so much money in would not be possible without the collaboration between Dr Abington Dr
Adams and the University of Michigan Oregon Department Dr Kibby who work together to put in This Magnificent instrument which blesses us each week I couldn’t count the amount of University of Michigan grads who are in here but we are all grateful for Dr Charles G Adams who paved the way for so
Many of us to walk through those doors to have the power to stand on what we knew and what we believed in and constantly encouraged us to be better so be on behalf of the University of Michigan black Alumni Association and all the many uh University of Michigan
Grads who have served here on the music staff we say thank you Pastor Adams we love you family we love you Pastor [Applause] Christian because I have two minutes I cannot acknowledge everybody to my friend and my brother Pastor Charles Christian Adam Mrs Adams and all the entire Adams Family I am
Pastor Kenneth James Flowers greater new M Mariah Missionary Baptist Church on behalf of our church family we extend to you our love our prayers and our sympathy Dr Adams was indeed a friend a brother and someone I called my unofficial Pastor when my late Pastor Dr William rhaney of Dexter Baptist Church
Uh who served as Dr Adam’s catechis when he was ordained when he passed away I told Dr Adams You’ be one of my unofficial pastors Dr Haney said he had the most powerful vocabulary in the world as I became a preacher Dr Adams inspired me motivated me encouraged me
Gave me advice wisdom and knowledge on how to be the best that I could be when I celebrated 25 years of preaching the gospel 20 years ago caretta Scott King was there the Reverend Jesse Jackson was there Dr Benjamin hooks was there Governor gr but the keynote speaker was
The Reverend Dr Charles Gilchrist Adams I asked him to speak because I wanted the Harvard Hooper to let somebody know what it was all about I thank God for Dr Adams another thing I’ll say as I prepare to take my seat one of the most humbling moments was I had the chance to
Baptize one of my childhood friends Douglas Carter right here at Hartford because of Dr Adams Douglas’s father Deacon Carter passed away he accept to Christ at his funeral and said I want you Kenny to baptize me but I want to do it at Hartford what do we do I said I’ll
Call Dr Adams as Dr Adam said Kenneth we’ll get into the pool together and he allowed me to leave greater new Mount Mariah on a Sunday morning come here get dressed get into the pool he said Kenneth you take him down and I took him down in the pool here at Harford
Memorial Baptist Church that was Dr Adams good night my friend I saw him three weeks before he passed away and I say to you good night my brother we love you but God loves you best if when you give the best of your service telling
The world that the savior is come be not dismayed when men won’t believe he’ll understand and say Well done oh when I come to the end of my journey we are of life and the battle is won carrying the staff and the cross of redemption he’ll understand and say Well done well done
Dr Adams Well done thy good and faithful servant well [Applause] Done good evening everyone my name is Reggie White um I remember my second year of Divinity School at Howard I was really struggling not only to pay for the for the courses on the teacher salary but I I was struggling to find my authentic voice to that
Point when I preached I just did an a bad impersonation of the preachers that I had heard as a as a child so I was a mixture of Wilma Johnson and and and Pa and Jeremiah Wright and and the words were authentic but the delivery was authentically
Bad it was bad because it wasn’t me well I heard Pastor Adam was coming to Baltimore to preach a Revival and I had to sit down and and and and and listen to him so I called the secretary and I I set up well she he set up
Something for me um to meet for breakfast and um and we talked for like five or six hours matter well I’m sorry he talked for five or six hours and I listened and I got better um um we talked about everything from when he burned down the garage when he was a kid
And um when he when he preached at Hartford for the first time and the church was cold and the prayer that he prayed was if the church never warms up God Don’t Let the Fire stop burning in me that stayed with me um well after spending six hours with
Him I wanted to get him a gift because I know he had places to be and he had he had people that he he could have seen but he spent six hours with me so I got him this gift and um I tried to give it to
Him and he said Son you you don’t have to give me a gift you’re the gift I never felt so good in my life um because to that point it had been a long time since my soul felt its worth uh if you have a chance I want you to
Sew into a young person without any regard of whether they can pay you back After he told me that I I preached better I studied better I wrote better because I was being my authentic self I found my voice because I spoke with someone who found theirs there’s so much to learn and there’s so much to be thankful for [Applause] Good evening um I am a minister here at Hartford but tonight I represent um the dance ministry I took to the family we offer our deep and sincere condolences Dr Adams wasn’t just a supportive pastor of Ministries but he was an an enabler to anyone wishing to spread the
Gospel of Jesus Christ if you came to him with a viable plan he supported your vision he helped you make it plain and he he made it even better than you had envisioned it many churches uh at that time and 1993 did not allow dancing uh during the lurgical church
Service and if they did you certainly couldn’t dance in the pool pit area PA never gave us any restrictions at all Pastor Adams was was so supportive of the dance ministry in a meaningful and pro profound way Deacon Bridget McDonald went to him in 1993 and asked
To create and develop a dance ministry I joined as artistic director a few months later as I had just formally joined the church we sered for four we served four times that year and met with him to discuss the future well he asked us if
We could dance every week we said oh no Pastor Adam says anyway we settled on once a month in the year 2000 he supported us in the first of a series of six dancing for God conferences and it drew up to 200 people later that year he gave us a resource in
The person of Reverend Jeremiah Wright um who directed us to a dance ministry at Reverend flakes Church in New York and the rest is history the Harford dance ministry is celebrating 30 years of service and we owe it to Pastor Adams and to Pastor Christian Adams we are inspired and richly
Prepared for the future because of our pastoral direction to God be the glory Thank you Jesus thank you Jesus we are only able to see a beautiful future because we’re all standing on the shoulders of giants the giant we called and will forever call Pa our Bel beloved Pastor amerus is now a blessed memory we will continue to pray unceasingly for you Auntie first lady

Dream I walked Pastor Adams to the passenger side I took his keys and off we drove Destination Unknown one month later I became chairman of the trustee Ministry destination was known wow so there’s a few takeaways I want to share with you around that the first is
The point of trust because I think we all have to take the keys from Dr Adams and continue the journey we all have to take the keys and drive but in doing so remember the word trust because trust is very important when I got in the car
With Pastor Adams he didn’t know if I could drive he trusted me I remember one conversation in the later days of his pastoral leadership here I was meeting with him and going over some spreadsheets and tables and all that and I can see that I was losing him in
Detail and he and I said pastor what do you think of all this he says brother Roman I trust you but you trust God I took the papers away and I said I know what I need to do Pastor so trust we need to be trustworthy in our driving
And we need to trust the driver but also Pastor Adams in that vehicle he was with me he didn’t give me the keys and walk walk off I had I had a partner and I think that’s important for us as we drive we must drive together in Fellowship in
Community and remember what Jesus said he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever so we take the Holy Spirit we take the spirit of Pastor Adams with us forever and finally we didn’t know about the destination but what Pastor Adams taught me taught us
Is that wherever God goes leads me I will follow so Dr Adams thank you I have my keys do you have your keys do you have your keys we’re ready to drive from here on thank you Pastor rest in Peace Good evening my name is deaconness Beverly Matthews and I’m the chairperson of the deaconness ministry to Mrs Agnes Adams Dr Tyra Washington Reverend Charles chrisan Adams Mrs Edith Clifton and the entire family we offer our sincere condolences for your loss we love you PA for over 50 incredible wonderful years you were an

If PA needed anything these women provided it for him now I’ve been told when he came home from college on the Greyhound bus one of them was waiting on him to give him a ride home every Mother’s Day Reverend Adams would have a dinner for the mothers in
Fellowship Hall a photographer would be there to take our picture and in about two weeks the picture would come in the mail a nice 8 by10 last Sunday Reverend Dr Ramona Chapman told the Sunday school class that we lost a preacher and a teacher but we have to remember that
Reverend Charles Christian Adams has lost his father Proverbs 226 says train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he would not depart from it Reverend Charles Christian Adams is the beacon of light in his father’s eyes the love the light shines so bright Reverend Charles Christian

Of who offer their sympathy and condolences to you The Adams Family as Dr uh Adams Church Clerk and Sunday Administrative Assistant he and I have had many conversations regarding his love and care for the members of our congregation and the content of his favorite scriptures 2 Corinthians 12
9-10 but he said to me my grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in weakness therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness so that Christ’s power May rest on me that is why for Christ’s sake I I Delight in weakness in insults in
Hardships in persecutions in difficulties for when I am weake then I am strong Philippians 41113 I am not saying this because I’m in need for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances I know what it is to be in need I know what it is to
Have plenty I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation whether wellfed or hungry whether living in plenty or want I can do all things through him who gives me strength those were two Dr Adam’s favorite scriptures if not his favorite so through many of
Life’s circumstances we shared several conversations about God’s grace and life’s contentment and content he was no matter where he was if he was in the president IAL suite at the progressive National Convention the White House a Hut in Africa teaching classes in Harvard or this very baptismal pool
Baptising baptizing souls for Christ but I believe he was most content teaching and preaching the word of God so to honor the memory of this Visionary an outstanding man of God please embrace the practice and principles addressed in these scriptures and in the initiatives he stood for social justice Local Economic Development educational

Condolences and prayers at at this time uh how appropriate the business ministry’s theme scripture is uh Proverbs 22:29 from the King James version seeth thou a man diligent in his business he shall stand before Kings he shall not stand before mean men to me that exemplifies striving for excellence and
Everything that you do and Reverend Dr Charles G Adams stood for excellence in everything that he did he stood for excellence in the preaching of the word he stood for excellence in his thought and deed he stood for excellence in the way he dressed in the way that he
Conducted himself and what an example that he set for us as the business Ministry he supported our business Ministry from large scale projects with the land that the the church owns to the uh Hartford Village that was mentioned earlier even to a home-based entrepreneur entrepreneur like myself he

Was chosen by God there was one sermon that the whole world truly enjoyed because when he was finished no one said ouch and that sermon was thank you of course Pastor Emeritus would say I wish I had 10,000 times just to say thank you in so many different languages but no
I’m not going to try to attempt to do that but since I am who I am and I got what I got and I feel what I feel I want to say thank you thank you God for allowing the Reverend Dr Charles Gil Chris Alam to be in this world thank you
God for allowing the Reverend Dr Charles Gil Chris Adams to be in United States of America thank you God for allowing Reverend Dr Charles Gil Chris Adams to be in the state of Michigan thank you God for allowing the Reverend Dr Charles Gil Chris Adams to be in the city of
Detroit thank you God for allowing the rever Dr Charles Gil Chris Adams to be one of the original pioneers of black lives matter thank thank you God for allowing Reverend Dr Charles Gil Chris Adams to Pastor Harford Memorial Baptist Church for 50 years and 6 months thank
You God for allowing Reverend Dr Charles G Gil Chris Adams to be part of my life To God Be The Glory thank you God Hello Harford uh welcome to Hartford I like to welcome everyone that’s not from this church too here tonight uh I guess I’m last but I like to say what Reverend Adam said to me uh he actually met me in prison uh when I did 13 years for
Shoplifting a pair of gym shoes and a set of bed sheets that’s because I was being abused by white men in prison and Reverend Adams I would write letters to him and Dorothy Ward if she was is here tonight I would tell her thank you for
Making sure he got all of my letters Reverend Adam said a prayer with me uh 13 days out of prison I was going for a job the next day and he said this long long prayer and he told me get there on time and God is going to meet you
There and I got there on time and I was hired on the spot I used to bring my backpack to church with me every Sunday because one of my jobs was to go out there and help other people that’s getting out of prison get jobs and I used to bring my
Backpack with me every Sunday to church because God told me to bring it and when I brought my backpack to church I would sit it right in front of Reverend Adams’s door every Sunday and Jackie Lieutenant Jackie Henderson came to me one Sunday and she said
John why do you keep sitting that bag in front of Reverend Adam’s door like that I said because because God told me to sit it there it’s going to grow God told me he’s going to make it grow if R if R Adam’s robe can just hit that bag
Every time it hits that bag it’s going to grow and my bag it grew from a duffel bag to a suitcase with about 30,000 business cards in it my first year out of prison we put 400 returned citizens to work and Reverend Adams made sure that this congregation got involved
Because he put my name in in my inmate number and my address in your church bulletin and then he asked you to write me letters before I came home from prison and then the real saints I ain’t talking about those people that come here to do business I’m talking about
Those real people that got that vertical connection they’re sitting at that table and they’re looking through that booster and they’re saying I’m going to send the word of God to this prisoner so he was a believer in prison re-entry programs and and I have made it my job and my duty to
Be an exemplary example of what you all have invested in people that are in jail in prisons all over this world I want to be that good example to let you know that your love is not in vain that your reach out to us has made a difference in
My life and every man and every woman that I’ve been able to touch through this ministry you are he’s great because you’re great great he’s great because you’re great he’s great because he great he had a great ministry he had a great church and I love you Harford I love you [Applause] Harford amen again the Brazil dard Cor Now I’m going to tell you about the coming of the Savior I’m going to tell you about the coming of the [Applause] Savior day Coming my Lord speaks to his father father I’m tired of Be ofing all oh preer F your [Applause] Bible no the been Converted for the L [Applause] [Applause] morning Morning morning there he in that great [Applause] morning amen praise God at this time The Adams Family Family tributes yes sir All right good evening everyone my name’s David Adam Washington um I’m Pastor Adam’s grandson I want to say first from the bottom of my heart and speaking for the family as well it’s very warming to hear all the tributes and all the kind memories for my grandfather uh he was a
Man truly of uncommon energy boundless generation generosity and a singular Gift of Gab that I think he really used to find ways to produce things for his community and I think even more importantly he used that oratory Excellence to find ways to inspire others to create things for themselves
And give to their own Community as well I could tell a bunch of stories about that but I’m not trying to get Reverend Curtis to drag me off the stage here so I’ll keep it short I remember when I came here about 7 years ago for his 80th birthday party after the
Service in the church everybody went down to the basement to have a big have a big supper and I remember seeing him look out onto the congr who came there to wish him well on his 80th birthday a lot of people that he had married a lot
Of people that children he had baptized uh people he even consoled in some of their darkest times I remember him seeing just being very proud of all the people that there who had been able to accomplish so much been able to pursue an education become doctors or ministers
Or engineers and contribute more to their community and seeing everybody there happy and prosperous was one of the greatest things that he was ever grateful for and it was one of the things that made him happiest in this world whenever I would come out to church at Hartford I remember even since
I was a little kid one of the songs I always wanted to hear the choir sing was this little light of mine and that to me was probably inspired because of my grandfather because something he always inspired myself and everybody else I know how to do was let that little light of yours
Shine and I’m proud I’m proud to call him my grandfather his Spirit lives on through the prosperity of his community that he loved and cared for yes sir the exercise of the educations he helped to fund and Inspire and every and the legacy of everything he’s done through his works in the community
So thank you all for everything today thank you [Applause] [Applause] All good evening Hartford family uh my name is Tara Adams Washington and I’m the daughter of this great man I wanted to thank everyone here for your heartfelt condolences and and for all the prayers that have been sent our way over the past several weeks really
Since uh he his health has taken a dramatic turn for the worst When I Was preparing to come here I really wasn’t planning to say anything and I was straightening up my office just uh getting ready for the person who would be filling in for me and I ran
Across these words that I felt described my father’s Journey so well so this is a a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson who was a philosopher and an abolitionist and a Harvard Alum and the words are as follows to laugh often and much to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of
Children to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the Betrayal of false friends to appreciate Beauty to find the best in others to leave the world a little better whether it be a healthy child a garden patch or a redeemed social condition to know even one life has
Breathed easier because you have lived here this is to have succeeded I believe my father succeeded and I want to say rest in peace and in power my dear [Applause] [Applause] Daddy good evening everybody I’m Edith Clifton I’m the uh sister of our pastor ameritus I’ve been with him through his entire journey and I only have two things to tell you everything you have heard tonight every word that has been spoken and sung magnificently is absolutely true I’m a witness [Applause]
I don’t know how you follow that Jonathan Wilkins um one of Dr Adams one of two of Dr Adams uh teaching assistance at Harvard Divinity School um it’s been said that when the student is ready the teacher appears I remember sitting on the edge of my seat in his first course preaching
For social change he was teaching from Arthur Mitchell’s book Henry Mitchell’s book The Art of oh black preaching the powerful art and recovery of an art form and I remember he called for a teaching assistant at the end of class and before I knew it my hand was already raised and I couldn’t
Believe I was the only one with my hand raised because at that time what I could not have known is that not only would I be his teaching assistant but he would adopt me as a son I was his chauffeur his uh grocery getter typed all of his emails some of you got
Emails from me but what made him so special to the Harvard Divinity Community him and his beautiful bride was that he turned conversations into revivals he would not allow you to settle for potential when promise was so near he would not allow you to settle for half-baked ideas when Excellence was
Required he required us to think more than average and he refused to allow us to settle for anything less and so I just want to thank God for your pastor our sponsor he poured into so many different unique people and our entire community is grateful we are grateful I
Remember being here as an intern and him saying we going to get you a car we going to put you up in a house and I remember I had no money and so all of it sounded and looked good and at the end of the summer he handed me a check for
$115,000 and for for somebody with no money it’s life changing and so for many of us he he put so much more in us that we have to pay it forward and until my dying day until my dying day I’m going to make sure that every young man I come in
Contact with is blessed by the one who blessed me and so tonight I’ll just raise my hand and say thank you to pop Adams for all that he done for all of us God bless You amen God bless you believe it or not we are almost done we are blessed to have Dr W James Abington here this day and he will bless us after we receive the benediction coming from our youth pastor the Reverend Jonathan bets Fields bless you all that’s Me let us pray King Jesus May our words of our mouths the meditations of our hearts and the worship that is our lives be pleasing may we be just Heavenly enough to be substantially good here on Earth and may we always remember to pray like everything depends on God and and to
Work like everything depends on us may we never forget what PA taught and preached and especially how he lived may the Lord bless you and keep you may the Lord show his kindness may he have mercy on you may the Lord watch over you and give you peace may his
Presence go before you and behind you may you remember that God’s love HS you in and Emmanuel God is with us to he who sits on the throne and to Jesus Christ Our friend and our King the lamb be praise and honor and glory and power forever
And ever let all who believe say amen amen and amen thank you [Applause] H For H [Applause] may you all be [Applause] blessed
