Persistence to graduation making joining a fraternity a worthwhile investment in their future in fact they learn more in their first year as a student when they’re member of a fraternal organization now we’re going to talk a little bit about Delta Chi while we’re excited your son has joined a fraternity we’re more
Excited he chose Del Taco originally founded as a law fraternity Delta Kai is a general College Social Security predicated on promoting friendship developing character advancing Justice and assisting in the acquisition of the sound education the fraternity was founded on October 13 1890 at Cornell University and now has
Over 120 000 members and maintains nearly 150 undergraduate alumni chapters across North America many of you may see here in the coming weeks that your son will be participating in founder days activities as founders day is just around the corner just as important if not more important
Than the values themselves are the words that come before them promote develop advance and assist Delta Kai is not just about what is but what we as members should be doing it is our actions that make Delta Chi which is why the keywords are the verbs and not
Just the nouns our values Delta Chi is promoting friendship Delta Chi exists to promote friendship and its members the friendships formed during their undergraduate years our relationships that will last beyond graduation develop character characters holding yourself and others to a high standard character is doing the right thing a
Cornerstone of the fraternity is developing men to live in concert with the values of Delta Chi Advanced Justice originally founded as a law fraternity Delta Chi still maintains that this Cardinal principle the observance of and respect for the law and assist in the acquisition of a sound education getting an education is the
Sole reason students are in college and the fraternity aims to support Stoops in that endeavor the international fraternity exists to support and provide services to local Delta kite chapters a few ways to fraternity provides that support is through chapter coaching prevention Education and Leadership and life skills training when we talk about chapter
Coaching every chapter has a direct line of communication with the international fraternity through their chapter coach a coach works with each chapter over the course of the year to assist with other operations and to ensure compliance with the fraternities policies and programs prevention education the fraternities risk management policies outline the
Outlying Delta Kai’s expectation to attend educational topics such as alcohol use and substance misuse hazing prevention sexual misconduct prevention and social event planning and over the next two slides we’ll talk about the leadership and life skills training that Delta Chi provides and offers the first of those programs is the Dale
Carnegie Scholars Program so launched in 2023 so just this year the Delta Chi Scholars Program brings industry leading leadership training to our members at no cost to them this world famous force will give members the confidence and competence to gain the command needed in their personal and professional lives
We had a hundred plus we expected 100 students to participate in the program in 2023 and we expect that number to grow in next year in 2024. members learn communication skills to set them apart from the job market and they’re given certification and opportunity to show that through the life skills through the
Life skills Dale Carnegie course which can be placed on their resume we also offer the regional leadership Academies which we’ve taken our nine Regional leadership conferences and reduced them to four Regional leadership academies to occur simultaneously over Martin Luther King weekend January 12th through the 15th of this coming year
The undergraduate members will gather to learn more with their brothers than ever before we will offer specific education to members in their officer positions the Dale Carnegie scholar experience and a leadership experience for members not holding a position we anticipate almost 1500 members to participate in these Regional leadership academies across North America
This will be a skills-based credential based program that all rla participants will be able to develop their leadership skills in the future I now invite Davis back to discuss our associate member education experience thank you very much Carl so one of the things we wanted to do this evening was
Talk a little bit about what you all can expect or what associate members should be expecting in their associate member experience I first want to start with that 1929 Delta Chi unanimously voted to abolish what the fraternity referred to as hell week and and what the the industry sometimes refers to is
How weak and in fact Delta Chi does not refer to new members as pledges but we refer to them as associate members and so whenever you see the the associate member experience that term is what Delta Chi uses instead of the term pledge we do not encourage the practice
Of pledging but more so joining the organization as an associate member what also our our chapters have the ability to do is per the risk management policies of the fraternity which we’ll talk about in a little bit each chapter is expected to utilize the fraternities program that is written by the
International fraternity and that comes in three different versions the first being a four-week version a six-week version or an eight-week version the the fraternity does not have a a limit or excuse me a minimum amount of time that they have to do but we do encourage chapters to complete their associate
Member experience within that eight week process to start that process and and if your son is joining this fall he may have already been pinned but that first ceremony in Delta Chi is what we refer to as the associate member ceremony and that’s open to the the public that’s
Something that you all as parents or Guardians can attend and if you’re in the local area uh it’s available on the fraternity’s website that is not a secret ceremony in and of itself the only secret ceremony that the organization has is the initiation ritual additionally if you all can scan that QR
Code that’s on the screen all of the materials for the associate Member Program are available to you all to the public and to the chapters as well and in there you’ll see there’s a participant guide book which is likely what your son would have if he’s joining
This fall but there’s also materials for our associate member counselors which are the initiated members that guide the associate members through this process there’s all the facilitation materials there for them to follow as well so we want a a unified experience for our associate members whether you’re at the
North south chapter or the Southwest chapter we want this experience as an associate member to be very comparable as it relates to each local chapter wanted to to touch a little bit on dues as Carl mentioned in the beginning there there is a financial commitment to joining an organization and what we
Wanted to do is talk a little bit about what Duties are are paid to the international organization and what dues are paid to the local chapter a lot of times we’ll have conversations with parents and the question comes you know why are the dues uh let’s say 950 a
Semester uh what what is the international organization doing with that money uh and and that is not all fees that are payable to the international organization all of your fees that your son would be paying are going to be paid to the local chapter in each chapter will typically have a
Treasurer which is referred to in Delta Kai as the D so the D Treasurer would collect the dues for the the entire local group and then they would get billed per member by the international organization and then they would would pay the internet National Organization so if you have questions on on Deuce
Specifically if you’re having challenges with maybe collecting dues or anything like that if your son’s having that the first point of contact is going to be that local chapter Treasurer but there are some fees associated with joining that are payable to the international organization that the chapter pays for
Instance the associate member dues are 100 per associate member in addition to an Initiation fee of 225 dollars per initiate once a member is initiated they’ll have membership dues that are 78 dollars a member and then additionally there’s a Housing Initiative of ten dollars a member that allows the Delta
Chi housing fund and also our work with our national housing Corporation Barrister Capital uh have some funds available to to do the work that they need to do additionally and we’ll talk a little bit about risk management there is ability Insurance costs that each member is payable it’s it’s one of the
Higher costs per member and so the base rate is 320 per member uh per year and what we do is we will build the chapter 60 of that total cost in the fall and then we’ll build an additional 40 there in the spring to break up that large
Cost because it is one of the the larger costs that they pay additionally while the base rate is 320 the fraternity has a discount and surcharge program where chapters are able to either get discounts for things like good behavior and winning certain awards that would likely lower their risk to the
Organization and then there’s also surcharges for chapters who may have had some challenges with accountability and be placed on on a corrective action with the paternity they would pay more than the chapter that has not so long story short on this one is there are some fees that are paid to the international
Organization to help funds some of the services that we provide for the chapters but the majority of the dues are likely going to the local chapter and so if you ever have any questions on finances the the staff is happy to help but the the treasurer at the local level
Is is likely going to be your best first call there shifting over uh from the finances want to talk about two common concerns that that we hear from parents and and students alike and and that would be uh both hazing and alcohol so I want to
Talk a little bit about alcohol and and first start that the fraternity maintains risk management policies that specifically outline expected conduct in regards to alcohol for example the the risk management policy is expect that chapters don’t have alcohol that’s above 15 ABV at their events or at their
Chapter facility unless that’s served by a licensed third-party vendor so what we want to do is make sure that if members are choosing to to consume alcohol that if they are having things that are above 15 ABV or commonly hard alcohol that that’s being served by a licensed and
Third-party vendor so that that responsibility of of Distributing the alcohol is not on the chat but on that third party similar to a cash board at maybe a wedding additionally as it goes to to alcohol the fraternity uh has policies that say any new member activities so if the
Activity is specific to associate members there is to be no alcohol present during that time and and even before or after within a 12-hour period that includes that that pinning ceremony that we talked about the the initiation essentially we we have policies that are expect our chapter
Not to have alcohol involved in in those things when your son is making the decision to join a lifelong organization in addition to just policies the fraternity also uh has expected attendance at the prevention education opportunities that we provide Carl had mentioned that one of the rules of the
International organization is to provide prevention education and that’s what Seth does for us on our staff on on alcohol and substance use hazing prevention sexual misconduct prevention and and social event planning are the four categories that the paternity has on a yearly basis and and expects certain officers additionally your
Student has access to industry-leading online prevention education by plaid which is a company that works in the Fraternal space where they offer courses that are free of charge to your student that covers alcohol use and and hazing prevention and things like that that your students able to take that at their Pace with
With all the other courses that they’re going the last thing we would want them to experience is feeling like Delta Chi is an additional credit hour that they’re having to complete this allows students to to learn at their Pace when it’s convenient to them online and wherever they do
With all of our risk management policies and our expected conduct uh if a chapter doesn’t comply with these they they will be placed on a corrective action or probation status with with the organization that comes with some certain requirements additionally when it when it comes to uh
Common concerns we hear a lot about about hazing and what would happen or is my son going to be experiencing something like that and again I will point to the the policies of the organization that the fraternity maintains risk management policies specifically outlining expected conduct in regards to hazing in 2021 the
Fraternities board of directors took some pretty decisive action and expanded the organization’s definition of hazing not only to include specific acts and take some ambiguity out of the definition but they also put in there uh the concept of condoning pacing and so the policy actually reads that any
Member or chapter who engages in or facilitates acts of hazing uh is expected not to do that but additionally if you condone acts of hazing you are also culpable within the organization’s risk management policies and the the condoning is is listed as failing to take timely and appropriate action so if
Someone knows that that hazing is is taking place and they fail to to make an attempt to stop that they are culpable just as those who are facilitating the acts we’ll say that although we have the policies as well the fraternity has made it very clear that hazing has no place
In Delta Chi and in fact in in the past five years the fraternity has has closed some of its oldest and largest chapters poor violations of risk management policy related to hazing and that’s one thing that that I don’t think Carl uh or I would would ever differ on
And that the organization has a stance on hazing and that’s we don’t tolerate that and that there’s no place for hazing involved in Delta Chi with hazing uh we believe that it’s important to support and promote a method for for individuals to report hazing not only for Delta Kai but for
Any organization that they might see and so the paternity is a proud sponsor of the anti-hazing hotline which was established in 2007 it’s through the Fraternal law partners and this resource allows anyone to report hazing and they can do it completely confidentially out confidentially and so an individual has
The opportunity to they can either call that phone number 188 not Haze and they can leave a voicemail which then gets sent to the international fraternity that that might be mentioned they can also fill out a form uh and they don’t have to leave an email what happens with
Those is if the hazing hotline gets a report that is sent to the fraternity and we’re able to follow up on that if we do receive that report that’s when we initiate our investigatory process following that that report of misconduct finally I want to talk a little bit about the resources available in
Addition to everything that we’ve talked about first that that each chapter is expected to have a minimum of two local alumni advisors to assist uh with with the chapter advisors uh whether that be on on the ground uh typically our alumni advisors are are local to the area in an
Ideal World we do have the opportunity for folks to to advise chapters on a virtual basis like we’re doing tonight but we really prefer that that there is someone within driving distance to to really be there on the ground and support the students uh I’ll skip over
To the far right side and share the universities typically have full-time staff dedicated to supporting Greek lettered organizations whether that be through the Student Activities office or even an independent fraternity and sorority life office there’s typically excuse me somebody on campus that’s full-time job is is to support the Greek
Letter to organizations on that campus but finally would would like to share a little bit about something that that the fraternity is very proud of and that’s our campus assistance program and so the fraternity offers a program uh called the campus assistance program that’s available 24 7 to all members of Delta
Chi free of charge and it comes with both the phone number that students can call and get connected immediately with a licensed mental health professional to not only talk about in that moment what’s going on and provide immediate support but really specializes on finding Referral Services whether it’s
In the Collegiate town that your son is in or even back home wherever that may be for him to continue that conversation additionally that that website with the login is really what we encourage whether it’s leaders in the chapter or just members who are curious it has articles on uh
Loss on relationship challenges on anything that you might imagine a student could go through there are some articles in there to to start figuring what’s the best way to support your brother because as Carl mentioned some of the research from the fraternity matters research project one of the things is that students are
Twice excuse me are twice as likely to reach out to a brother if they are in need of some mental health uh support in that so we we want the campus assistance program to be there in addition to all these other resources and in addition to the fraternities professional staff that
Carl and I have talked about so far would like to to welcome Carl back uh real quick as I grab a drink of water uh if he could could help us close this out of course so we’d like to offer any questions um feel free to use the chat if you’d
Like to share some two have come through already during the course of the presentation I think are just important maybe to highlight that if they had the question maybe others did uh one was um can anybody participate in the Dale Carnegie program and uh I think the
First piece is the Del Carnegie Delta Kai Scholars Program each chapter elects their one scholar and that is who gets to participate in that life skills uh session that will take place at the regional leadership academies in the coming year however we also offer four webinars that are able to uh any member
Can participate in undergraduate or alumni and the next of those will be on October 5th uh 1 to 2 30 central time uh with the topic being disagree agreeably and so we have a lot of access to those programs and work can be able to provide more opportunities moving forward the second
Question that came through was asking for more details related to the risk management policy and that risk management policy can be found online on the paternity’s website under the risk management section and so you can download the full policy there it can also be shared within the chat box but
You can have access to that everything is public and Carl that’s a good one we had another one come in that asked how does the fraternity ensure that all members are are aware of those risk management policies and and contain within the policies is the expectation that that each chapter goes through
Those policies their first chapter meeting of the fall semester or quarter and additionally the fraternity has each chapter and expects them to sign the policies that say I have read uh and and agree that that we are to abide by these so typically what happens is the chapter
Will go through it as a group that first semester and then submit the sign Paul policies making sure that they understand and additionally there is some space in that associate member program that we reference that that talks about the policies as well um Carl I have another question that I
Think would be good for you uh to touch on and that’s uh who can I speak to if if I’m concerned about my student thanks Davis uh so I think the the first piece would be one I would encourage you to talk to your student to your son
Initially and ensure that there’s an open line of communication there and that you fully understand what your concern may be uh does does um does your son have any additional information that may provide some context or uh give you even more reason to want to reach out and then the second
Part would be you can reach out to Davis or myself at any point in time our contact information uh is on the website um you see the information here with the phone number email address that we take any report seriously our first step is to fact find to gather information and
To understand the best we can what may be happening in a given uh chapter on a given campus and then to decide what are the best next steps and so I think your your first step is to talk to your son and the Second Step then would be to contact the fraternity headquarters
Whether that’s Davis or myself or another staff member or the chapter coach uh that we can then get additional information from you and identify how to proceed from there yeah the other thing I will mention on that too Carl one edition is the the confidentiality that that we can provide
And will do to protect so if if we do get a concern uh we’re able to to keep that uh within the parties who discuss it uh so we we really want the opportunity if you are concerned about your son that nothing holds you back from letting us know uh and we we
Certainly would never share that where that information came from with with anyone uh in the chapter or with your son unless you you gave permission to do that Carl that that goes back to uh the next question that we have I see that it says
I’m I’m still on the fence with my son joining Delta Chi and while this webinar has helped uh what ways can the fraternity benefit my son now and in his future thank you uh why there’s a ton of benefit now I’m biased uh clearly I’ve spent 20 years professionally uh working to advance
Fraternities um and of course I had my own undergraduate experience but I think the three things we learned at the the first part of this uh webinar is talking about how um what the paternity experience does in creating stronger mental health uh lifelong connections and an accelerator
For success to me really speaks to what’s the value and benefit of the opportunity and that’s not just uh individuals in fraternities saying this this is based upon research that the North American inner attorney conference has gone out and done to identify what is that value of
Fraternity I think the other pieces to consider is Delta Kaiser learning laboratory it complements what your what your Sunday students able to do within um within their formal education on campus and so you get the opportunity to to be able to learn to have some challenges to to identify conflict management skills
Peer accountability that all help you to uh to be a better individual and it’s not just learning leadership skills but it’s an opportunity to practice those leadership skills so what a great opportunity I can’t think of any other greater opportunity I had as an undergraduate and a young professional
Than my fraternity experience and it provides a lifelong membership it’s not something that you join or are part of for a part of college or just through college but something that you can be a part of for for decades and to really be able to continue to
To learn and to grow and to give back through your experience great thank you Carl Um I think we have time for for just a few more questions um Seth if we could see if we can see those um I see we we have a question here uh uh and we’ll go ahead and answer this one and then uh I believe in a hard stop
At 30 minutes as it’s approaching 8 30 there on the the East Coast if if we have a question that that we did not get an opportunity to to answer with you all we will follow up after this uh and have access to this but I think this is a
Good one for us to close out on Carl that just came in and and that’s what sells the what sets Delta Kai apart from the many other fraternities that are around students to join uh and I Know Carl you spoke on it a little bit but but I would just highlight the the
Fraternities values uh and really those verbs that that promote it uh develop advance and assist in the the the education um that that those values of Delta Chi while they are not there very unique that most organizations will have a value surrounding of Education that Delta Chi really Prides itself on that
Verb that we are creating those men of action that we are creating men who who do fraternity write and whether your your son’s organization on campus is younger it’s been there for for quite some time uh Additionally the the fraternity is there I would say as well
Um and Carl hit on it a little bit uh that the fraternity puts an emphasis on on not just having the student have a good good experience within the Collegiate time but also giving them the skills that they need to to advance on in their careers we want
The fraternity to be uh something worthwhile in their Collegiate Experience that not only helps them for those four uh five maybe six years of their time but additionally on and that’s why we we launched the the Dale Carnegie experience uh Carl I I may have missed something and want to make sure
That you have an opportunity to share on this one too uh which sets us apart I would say the odd one Dale Carnegie um right a very tangible piece here is a partnership with a nationally known leadership organization something that’s been around for 100 years uh that
Um no other organizations have been able to to develop a connection on a partnership like that and so I think that will be one of the elements that we’re able to uh to talk about and ideally be able to show success over the future I think the other piece that sets
Us apart is the the leadership of the fraternity has really made the decision to invest heavily in the membership experience uh for um for undergraduate members and so I think a large part of that is then uh Partnerships like Dale Carnegie uh reimagining our regional meetings uh the the partnership with um
Our recruitment Specialists and uh other um support people in the in the fraternity sorority space that we’re really wanting to make sure that this isn’t just about uh larger chapters mortgage chapters but this is about the undergraduates having a positive and beneficial experience and our fraternity
Uh Board of Regents has made a priority to say this is where we want to take uh an effort where we want to work to advance the the undergraduate experience and we’re going to do so through uh through these Partnerships and through measuring that experience and what we can do moving forward
Um I’d offer uh one other piece uh I guess two two follow-ups here uh one the recording will be online uh um we’re all being shared here uh later this week so that will be the opportunity if somebody’s missed it or if you know that somebody needs or like the opportunity
To review it uh that will be available and then uh two uh clearly if there are questions that have not been answered tonight if there are things that you would like additional information on to please reach out to Davis myself Seth or any other staff member uh we would
Really like to connect with you learn more and be able to answer your question well thank you Carl I think the last thing we would like to say is just thank you all for for joining us for for this evening and taking some time out of your
Week uh I think the the relationship and we send a message out uh earlier this semester that that parents and Guardians still have the uh an important role in in their students life and so we really appreciate you all taking the time uh and and just want you to know that while
While your son’s joining Delta Kai and we are here to serve Delta Kai we’re also here to to serve you all uh if needed and so if there’s anything we can do please reach out and with that just wanted to say thank you all and have a good rest of your evening
Thank you all good night
