Commedians most of us are Dark Twisted individuals on the inside something’s wrong with us on the inside we’re broken we do comedy because we want people to laugh with us we need that whatever void that is that we have we want that filled with laughter a lot of us make a lot of
People laugh but we don’t laugh ourselves so it’s therapy for us we do comedy to to bring laughter to bring light to our dark insides you know that’s why you see some comedians with depression so many comedians uh on drugs overdose or whatever we’re we’re dark creatures and that but that dark our
Comedy brings light to that Darkness it gives us a little bit of light when we see an audience laughing or we make even one person laugh that’s that’s good for us and we’re kind of control freaks right we want to control we do I heard a
Statement when it says we do comedy CU we’re so afraid of getting laughed at we do stand up to control the laughter M and and and a lot of that is true for most ComEd I know it’s true for me I’m just going to be honest I can’t speak
For every other comedian but as you analyze and look at Comedians and talk to in our community it’s it’s it’s like that that’s why comedians you know can make such great dramatic actors if they take their comedy ego out the way and allow them to tap into that dark side
When you see comedians do work I’m not surprised that they’re good dramatically a lot of my work has been uh dramatic more than comedy you look at um Richard prior who who has some some dramatic work where you look at this stuff you look at Eddie Murphy people thought you
Know Dream Girls was the first time they saw Eddie dramatic no in the movie Life yep y sisy Tyson was in life she got completely cut out there’s some SC she played Eddie Murphy’s mom there’s some scenes in that movie where her Eddie go
Off and they talk and I and and and this is before dream girl and I was like Wow Ed got some got some R I didn’t know he had that R I know he had range characters but he went deep with that I was like wow well you Robin Williams
Robin Williams um Billy Crystal um even Kevin Hart with Kevin Hart um independent movie Russ par uh uh uh syndicated radio DJ did a movie called The Last Stand and Kevin Hart plays this this comic who the vento Quist who who has a meltdown with his with his dummy
And back then I said Woo EV if Kevin ever decides to go dramatic which he did in in in one a recent movie he released he’s going to be he’s going to be tight because he was able to take his common ego and tap into that dark side and
That’s what we have to do you know and and and then that’s what makes you know comedians who act who are who who make themselves vulnerable great actors Marlon wayes another one who Taps into that dark side and and and does great work the the would be Goldberg yeah the the the the
Monique yeah impression y absolutely funny but it was able to tap into that dark side the art of not the art the science you talk about uh the craft one of the things that um I’ve had other conversations with with comedians what drives them
Crazy and we saw this a lot M with the second iteration of Death Jam and knowing you you probably try to blame it on Joe um when you had when you had this this generation of comedians who just came out just cussing and that was nothing there it
Was it was and and I I remember who was I talking to it was was was a group of us several comedians they were saying That’s not comedy right that you’ve got to put the work in the craft when you when you came to the DC Improv we were
Talking backstage and and you went on with his big ass legal pad uhhuh and your pen and you said all right y’all let y’all know I’m working through some stuff so if I go back and look at look at my notepad just understand that right so walk us through what is your process
In terms of it’s not just like oh just pops into a head what is your process as you are putting putting your thing together putting your routine together your act together how how you how you going through that well first of all I used to never come on stage with a
Notepad I and I thought you know even in a comedy club I mean that that’s the show you do that work before you get there but then I saw some of my heroes do it and I like whoa I saw Robin Williams do it at the ComEd store I saw
George Carlin do it at the comedy store I saw Dick Gregory do it in a live show taping a show and he had his notepad and I’m like wow and then Dion Cole you made it made it popular back on death back in the day when he we used to do the whole
Check off thing that was he he he he you know he killed with that so I’ve seen those I’m like you know what it’s okay right it’s okay if these greats done it well how T TV anchors have no cards that’s true with the questions on it
That’s true so I started doing that and also people got to understand what a comic Club is Comic Club is the gym that’s where you go work out that’s where you work out that stuff that that you’re trying out and and trimming the fat off of a
Put top of and and that’s the gy that’s where you work it out then you go to these other platforms these streaming networks you know and you know Amazon Prime or the the other competitors cuz I’m I’m Amazon Prime guy uh I mess that money up drop drop these
Other these other platforms all those late night shows the talk shows at night that’s the gym that’s the beach that’s when you take your shirt off and you Flex a little bit in comic clubs that’s the nuts and bolts you know the Laugh Factory is called Laugh Factory for a me
For a reason cuz what are you do in factories you build right and that’s what comic clubs are we’re building our act some people confuse a a a comic club uh show with a theater show or an arena show got it you know they’re not the Same and the bin over the window seats these are the only bins that will accommodate larger Roll they put 10 in here 10 and you don’t come out till you die you eat him oh God [Applause] Chris Rock told the New York Times what what he hated about folks who would who would tape shows at a comedy club he said you don’t understand he said we’re polishing the joke we’re working it through he said I might do a number of shows and that joke might just might be
20 25% there so you’re commenting on something that I haven’t finished building yet that’s like ugly babies there’s some ugly babies out there you can’t that ugly baby May grow up to be beautiful may you know and I’ve actually said that’s ug ass baby don’t baby cute but you got to
Understand the baby ain’t grew into his features and face yet so our acts are ugly babies period and but the other thing is and one further with with Chris Rock said is if if we if we’re doing a bit and we’re working on it and you go
Post it and it goes viral whether it’s good or bad when we do our special for that Network or that streaming platform they’re not going to want that joke so now I got to take that joke out of my set because it’s been seen already it’s been viral already so now that joke
Really probably connected my whole set so now I got to take that out and now it it it messes with your set so in many way it’s sort of like well it used to be when artists put albums together right so the the the flow of the S the flow
Album uh uh work for a certain reason the same way a preacher constructs a sermon same thing with standup show should be most the difference between a comic and a comedian right so I was going to ask you that cuz you talk you go ahead go ahead a comic says funny things
A comedian make things funny you know if when you go to a comedy show you you you you want to leave with a piece of that comedian you want to take a piece of that comedian home with you you know you want you want that comedian to be transparent and
Vulnerable and let you in comedians do that Comics are just set up punch set up punch you know nothing about them you laugh the whole time you had a good time at the show right but then you’re like you don’t know who that person is a comedian take takes his life or takes
Situations and make them funny back to Eddie Murphy you know Kevin Hart these are comedians I’ve worked with Martin these comedians I work with acting wise right and I’ve seen what was in that script I’ve seen how those words are written on that page right and they take
It those words and what they do to it they make it funny as hell that’s a comedian that’s someone who who took somebody else’s writing and put the it’s like it’s like a basketball you know you give me a basketball it’s a basketball get that same basketball to Michael
Jordan that same ball right that basketball in his hands is something totally different so sometimes with those guys and then with me a little bit when I add lib and Cedric is the same way when you at Li and Bernie was just in the movie Life Bernie was just the
King at it they take words on a page and they put they stank on it and they made it funny you don’t have some people you don’t have to write funny for right they going to find it or you write it they going to find funny right you know so my
Process is is I write a lot I I write word for word and then I Then I then I go through i bullet point it then I may study it and then I may I go on stage and I’ll just have the topics then so I
Can look back and see what flows so my process is that and and everybody’s process is different yeah you know like rappers you say Jay-Z never written anything down or or biggy didn’t write anything down some some rappers got to go on there with the pad a’t nothing
Wrong with that so it depends on how your brain works uh how you like the work how you process information and and if it’s your story you don’t have to write too much down anyway see the thing that the thing um see when you made that point about coms comedians comics and
Comedians so um we we first met when you dropped by George Lopez’s uh show yeah and George for two years Geor asked me to host it and came off you like your ass funny I knew he be before then I never seen you do stand up
But I wouldn’t even do I wouldn’t even do yeah I’m telling you it was it was a show we met we met long before that but I saw you on stage for the first time um you know I course seeing you in the Tom
Jones it was a theater was a theat la is an orphan theater and and and DL was on the show you was on the show Georgia said hey I want you to want you to be the host I was like all right I didn’t expect it and I’m like oh that’s
That’s that’s rolling M and then and everybody was like yeah we know like cuz you wasn’t on the ticket no right and and and you came out there you slay the audience I was like oh snap okay and I came backstage and I told you I was like yo but it was a
Great Arenal was on the show everybody killed from from top to bottom see the thing that the thing that I the thing that the thing that what I tell people is is it’s sort of like when cuz again mcing I’ve MC Banquets right the purpose
Of the MC and the banquet want to keep that show moving keep moving keep it going but also you got to be smart enough and quick enough to know when something was weak when something was bomb when something happened the music not right the choir not ready the wars
That got lost or whatever and so you are totally operating with no without a net yes and there are some people who are TV anchors or there are some people who I’ve seen like a lot of people think every comedian can MC no no sir because
It’s when you’re doing that it’s a lot of stuff that comes up that you have no control over but your job is to is to keep that whole thing together and people will sit here man and they will uh they will uh they’ll be like how in
The hell did you where in the hell that come from I’m like yo I can’t tell you see you as as an MC you’re almost you’re quarterback in the show Absolutely you’re you’re you’re because sometimes you have to read the audience and you may have a certain uh list of things you

I did a standup Show competition show years ago which I regret I regret doing it I never should have I got talking to it I should have went with my first mind right it was on a major Network all right and before one of the tapings they wanted us to write
Our set out three weeks before the taping want to write our set out word for word and email it to him I’m like what I said okay I I’ll do it but those three weeks actually one of those weeks is when I saw you when you came to the
Show in DC Improv I was work it was the week before I did I was working on that set the same set I sent them I worked on it trimmed the fat off changed a couple of you know same set I just changed made some stronger punch lines blah blah blah
So I emailed the network uh a couple days before and said hey I just want you to know I’m doing the same set I just changed a couple of things and I sent them a new you know some of the new stuff and because as you a stand up you
Just stuff just come you you don’t s STP right so I so they said no they sent me email back said no you have to do exactly what you sent us the first time I see yeah but I I’ve been on a road for three weeks I tighten it up I made it
Funnier I made it better stick to the script or you won’t air and I emailed back I guess I won’t air so when I when I went and did the show I did it my way the way I changed it the funny way and by the time air
They edit that so crazy and had my set looking like uh disjointed jokes and punches and took the new stuff out and and I was just like wow that makes that make no sense see that’s see that’s the thing man major Network too yeah that’s the thing that that’s that’s the problem
When when you have folks who want to be so scripted like like my show when I when I went to CNN we sat down and and they said um so we do a show let’s lay out the concept I said it’s a very easy concept I said it’s a very easy concept
They were like what I said it won’t even take up the full page I said this is a scripted unscripted show yeah and they were like very Loosely scripted and they said um what is that I said what it is is we have a script it’s a guide right I said
