Welcome back. Well, tomorrow, the devastating divas of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated will be celebrating 111 years of sisterhood scholarship service and social action. The sorority was founded on January 13th in 1913 by 22 women at Howard University in Washington DC.
It is one of the largest black sororities with more than 300,000 initiated members. Celebrities like singer Kay Michelle Keisha Knight William and gospel singer Shirley Caesar are all Deltas. In fact, the first black congresswoman, the late Shirley Chisholm was also a Delta. Joining us this morning are some
Members of Delta Segmented Sorority Incorporated. Ladies, introduce yourself. OK, I’m De Pendleton representing the Toddler Alumni chapter. Perfect. I am J Lo Wade, I’m Asia Brown. I am the president of the Texas College chapter and I’m also a UN CF queen for Texas College. Awesome. Well, and if you guys don’t know,
Black Greek letter organizations aren’t just in college. They’re also in graduate chapters because it is a lifetime commitment. That’s why we have undergraduate members from uh um Texas College as well as the graduate chapter. Um Can you tell us a little bit about what sisterhood means to you guys.
Well, sisterhood is a, is a bond. Um not necessarily by blood. Um It is about the commitment and the relationships that you build over time. So definitely, um for me, uh sister, for me, it’s just you create a bond. I became really, really close with my last sister and it helps a
Lot when you’re going through a lot of things. Definitely. Uh Dee, how long have you been a member? I’ve been a member since spring of 1980. So 44 years and counting. Yes. So what keeps you renewing that membership every single year? Um Basically bringing in new members is a way to stay committed
And also you get back what you give. So when you give to the community, it really does come back. And so that keeps you going. Definitely. So we know that, um, something that’s really big within Delta Smythe Sorority Incorporated is service and social action.
Um How do you guys apply those two principles to East Texas? Well, I don’t wanna dominate all of this speaking, but Texas College has traditionally since 2018, done the National voter registration day. And we’ve actually registered more voters sometimes than the legal women voters, which is I’m also a part of,
But, um, keeping people engaged, um helping them remember their right to vote. That’s one of the main things, but also voter education and then actually getting to the polls is definitely a challenge. But that’s something we do on the daily stroll to the polls. Got it.
Uh So what about you guys? What do you guys do on the campus of Texas College? Um I’ve been a part of the for two years now. So main thing I’ve been trying to focus to collab with myself since I’m a queen is mental health. So we’ve been,
We’ve started a red room talk and we just have where anybody not just females can come, males can come and talk about any mental health problems or issues they have in life. I’m sure that’s a big deal, especially on a college campus.
I know being on col in college can be very mentally draining. So just creating that safe space that you guys are doing is awesome. Um And on a wider scale, um you guys have an upcoming event, the alumni chapter January 27th and that is about human trafficking awareness, right?
So yesterday was National Human Trafficking Day and this will be our second annual human trafficking event. And so we’ve invited a lot of youth groups and the public um because a lot of people unaware, it is very real here in Tyler
As well as East Texas and the nation. So we do that as a form of awareness. Definitely, we’ll be sure to try to come out and cover that. Um One more thing, any special plans for J 13 many, many plans. So we have a a young server. She’s been to Delta two months.
First Founder’s Day. Absolutely. And then we have, of course, our two year veteran, she’s been to our national conventions and served very well as president. So we would just be, we have actually a chapter meeting tomorrow. So we’ll be working as usual. Come on.
We also have a service project and a little bit of fun things. We’ll be worshiping together on Sunday and we’re gonna march in the Martin Luther King March, but it’s been canceled due to weather. So, um, it’s what we do Monday’s International Day of Service.
So we will be doing a service project as well. Perfect. Well, thank you guys so much for joining us. Everyone. Be sure to tell them a Happy Founder’s Day on Saturday 13th. Yeah. Uh, we’ll be sure.
