I don’t really want to be here today I don’t know that many of us really want to be here today but I’d rather not be anywhere else but here today to share this moment to recall a life lived well and an opportunity to pray with those who loved
Mark it’s an opportunity of Grace for each of us to be able to pause to look around to see the faces whose lives he’s touched and to realize that in being touched by him we are charged to share that Grace with others that’s the purpose of funeral
Liturgies it’s not just to mourn the loss of one who has gone from us but to realize that there is a challenge left to each of us a a challenge to make present that love in the life of those around us who remain in the image of the one we recall
In the hope and the trust that is ours in Christ and to share that which has been given to us over the next over the last few weeks and certainly the last few days sto that’s done best in the stories of how Mark touched Our Lives how we were
Engaged with his or his families with kelen and the kids and the opportunity to share those stories gives us a reminder of the hope that is ours in Jesus Christ so I’d rather not be anywhere else as much as I don’t want to be here
For this event but it is our Grace to share in this moment the life of one who lived it so well my my uh first encounter with Mark was here at the Parish of course and when he and kelen uh decided to become a part of our parish and our
Community uh it was an opportunity to watch someone grow in understanding with both of them but particularly Mark who had questions questions but he desired the knowledge that was the beauty of it from that point on one of the words that came to my mind regarding him and still to this moment is
Tenacious he had a tenacity about him if there was something to get to he was going to get to it no matter what it meant he was doing to you he was going to get to the bottom of it he was going to ask the questions that needed to be
Asked he was going to come up bring it up each time he saw you and keep asking and that tenacity was endearing because it reminded us that we are all called to be on this journey of wisdom and knowledge because it is driven by a hopefulness that we can gain one more
Piece of insight one more part of the story one more opportunity to delve more deeply into the mystery that we call life and allows us the opportunity to grow in that wisdom and Grace while my while being after being transferred from here I didn’t get to
See them as often we’d run into each other whether it was at the picnic or other events and he would keep me informed on his faith progress particularly touched by the actx Retreats and his ongoing efforts to know and to love and to serve the Lord when the cancer was diagnosed and
Then as it as it came back and forth and the and the challenge that and the tumor that that that grew and then challenged him tenacity continued to be his Hallmark even up to the last the second to the last visit I had right after in late November early December he was still
Talking about treatments that might be a possibility maybe this maybe that they couldn’t put him on hospice because he was willing to keep trying looking for any answer because he was tenacious to hang on to life to be present to those he loved with the image of God’s mercy and
Love when finally we we celebrated the viaticum that is the last communion before the journey through death to New Life he was unable to speak but clearly knew that this was another opportunity to encounter the mercy of God and to witness that to those who were there kelen and
Myself he was even then able to recognize God’s love at that moment and his desire to share that his life offers us the opportunity to ask how do we seek to share that Mercy that hope that confidence in God’s love this man who so was tenacious
Wanting to share that even at the most recent acts Retreat wanted to give a talk but just wasn’t able to that tenacity of trust in God and the desire to evangelize to share that which he has received it’s our opportunity as we recall his life today to ask how do we
Seek to share that which has been shared with us how do we seek to make the presence of God’s love known to others each in our own way each in our own vocation but with that tenacity and the confidence that comes from the knowledge of Jesus Christ and the faith that motivates that
Love as we honor his Life as we suffer through his loss we remain with the gift of his promise and love the gift of his example of that tenacity that challenges each one of us how will we seek to share that compassion that thirst for knowledge
That desire to be closer to God that gratitude that came forth from him through this illness to all who were so quick to offer their time their energy and their efforts to support him and the family as we celebrate this funeral mass let us pray that we too can grow in that
Wisdom and knowledge of God and share it with that same tenacity that draws others to that mystery of God’s love let us honor the memory of Mark by our own commitment to the ideals of Faith to the goodness of family and to the hope that is found in Christ

Illinois cville Mark was a baby he had three siblings Vicky Jimmy and Cindy he was adored and supported by his wonderful parents Floyd and Pat he was spoiled some say spoiled rotten which was on his license plate when I met Him he was the youngest of he was youngest by eight years by his next sibling but the Gap and age no way expressed it represented a distance between them they were a close family and remain remain that way throughout Mark’s entire life but truly the moment he was put in Cindy’s
Arms when he was a baby she never really let go she held him close from the day he was born until the day he left us she was there through every success every heartbreak every Milestone and he was for hers she was there with him when he took
His last breath in the same way she showed up for every respect of his life every aspect of his life they had an Unbreakable Bond they were best friends Mark was exceptionally close to his parents his mom Pat he had a playful relationship with his mom Pat she was
Tiny but her influence on him was large he would try to get a rise out of her by pranking and reporting that he did something and she always played along I love that he took her to uh for dance letter lessons it was one of the highlights of her life he remained
Happily a mama’s boy until we lost her in 2018 a loss he never really got over and the only piece in any of this is knowing that she was waiting for him with open arms he played a lot of baseball in those days especially with Tim his neighbor and great
Friend in those stories Mark loved to tell the ones about his dad Floyd worked overnights in a hot dirty Amron Cal flyer plant Southern Illinois but even exhausted and ready for a shower before he’d go home he’d make a beine of Mark Mark’s games Mark knew his dad would be there
He was always there and he was there that Monday in every story Mark told about growing up it was clear how much uh Pat and Floyd sacrificed for him he knew what kind of amazing parents he had who they were as parents shaped who he wanted to be as a
Dad and Floyd and Pad made Family front and center Above All Else and Floyd I know he strived every day to be the kind of parent that you guys showed him he was a hell of a ball player too Mark and I met in 1993 when he transferred to Southeast after playing
Baseball at Community College for two years we were members of the same frat attorney and we socialized but Mark had his own tightnit knit circle of uh of friends including his roommate CB we weren’t close during that time we graduated and lost touch but one day in March 199 six I get
A call from Mark that I had no idea would change my life forever a call that gave me Decades of friendship and opportunities as business partners but back then it was just a request to rep rent an apartment together in Dogtown Dennis Mark and I we had a lot of fun in those
Years and as important as those years were to me none of those stories are appropriate for this venu let’s just say we had a lot of growing up to do right Kirsten but then he would meet in person who was Meet the person who was willing to help
Him grow up at the Brentwood y basketball court he would meet the love of his life for the first time kelen they were being set up by roommates by uh by one of our teammates and in kela’s version of the story after the game Mark completely and totally ignored
Her in Mark’s version of the story though being the Hopeless Romantic that he was he said that when he met heing he knew deep down he just met the the woman he would spend the rest of his life with he was nervous and he didn’t want to mess
Up and somehow both of those stories are exactly Mark the good news is is whether it was nerves or more likely embarrassment because we just got beat by 30 points I think we all are grateful that Mike Mark didn’t blow it that day because I can’t imagine a mark without
Kelen when he proposed to kelen over 20 years ago he made the best decision in his life kelen never wavered behind the street behind him during every business venture every entrepreneurial idea every bit of travel work demanded his enduring his endearing neurosis and of course every day for 10
Years he fought that stupid tumor she kept his dream for that close tight-knit family alive and ran their household like military with military level Precision she helped him become the father he wanted to be and she was patient as he grew into went to the husband he wanted to be for
Her they raised three amazing children Mark be me gone but the love that you two created will be together you two created together will be here forever and nothing can take that away but shortly before mark would officially marry Keelan in 20 in 2003 mark would enter another important Union
Mark and I would start a business together our first business together and we spent a lot of time together those are incredible important years and bonding years between our first company in 2001 and our last we started in 2012 he would get married I would get divorced I would
Remarry we both would go on to have three children I we would lose uh um ones we loved we experienced business highs and business lows and somewhere in between there between the business pitches and the late night crunching good numbers mark would go from being one of my best
Friends to just being my constant some would refer to Mark to as my some would refer to Mark as my work wife as Sil as that might sound he was truly my partner and these companies we went to battle together and there was no one else I would trust to have my back
In situations like Mark and working to go working together so much allowed me to see Mark and appreciate how good he was at what he did still the single most impressive business deal I’ve ever seen was by Mark in 2008 at that time the world was in
The midst of a world financial worst financial crisis we’d ever likely see but somehow somehow Mark pulled off an investment we desperately needed from a financial institution that was being deeply impacted by this crisis no one in their right mind should have taken a risk on us but through his sheer
Determination his relationships his charm we walked out with the money we needed and I am still not sure how he got that done and there’s no way to describe a town like that I’m glad I’m I’m certainly proud and glad I got to see it
Up close but that was a force of Mark he could pull you into his passion he could make you believe in his vision he wasn’t just a sales or marketing guy he was a dreamer and we were all lucky enough just to be just enough to he let
In he was also a spiritual man he had a relationship with God for most of his life he joined the Catholic church in this Parish in 2013 he was so excited and all in and clearly had a lot of questions from his participation in Acts and coaching he loved being a member of
The St jard community and it’s clear you loved him back but there was a particular time that I think he really connected to his his faith after being diagnosed in 2014 and having surgery to remove the tumor a year later in 2015 Mark CB Jason and I
We took an epic trip to hike the Inca Trail to see Macha Picchu to celebrate Mark’s success in beating the tumor it was a grueling 4-day hike in high altitude we camped the second night just below 14,000 ft at 12,000 ft it was the highest point of the trip and after
Hiking for 12 hours we arrived at our uh at the camp exhausted and quickly passed out on our tent lateer at the night I woke up to find him sitting outside of the tent peacefully admiring the stars that I swear you could have plucked right out of the sky they were that
Clear Cindy reminded me recently there was a trip that he felt he met and connected with God and given the beauty of that night the region seeing Machu Picchu from the Sund dial his survival I could I could certainly understand why but as as much as Mark is all those
Things Mark’s favorite role in his life was to be father to pierce II and Arden if you knew him well or if you just met him for a few minutes then I bet you walked away with some information about one of his kids because Mark loved to talk about them
Who they were what passion their what their passion is what they were grown up to be he might tell you a story about how much he love to baby the baby Arden his buddy he call her or bragging on I’s tenaciousness on any field or court and he would boast about Pierce’s
Hustle his entrepreneurial spirit I think a passion you both shared there wasn’t a conversation Mark with Mark without knowing exactly how he felt about his family he loved his kids and they were his whole world we were fortunate to have Mark for as long as we did with his diagnosis any
Normal human we’d have been here much sooner he but not Mark he fought hard and this was evident in a story Cindy was telling me about when he was young and he didn’t want to wear leg braces he fought hard always in his optimism against what he was facing was
Inspiring the impact that Mark had to everyone around is clear this church today the room is filled with people that were important to important to him I wish I could name you all but you know all you all know who you are you never had a doubt who you were to Mark and
Mark always had a way to show you that you matter to him it was one of the things I loved about him Mark had a huge influence on my life he was there when I needed someone to laugh to listen to hang out he was there still hard to comprehend he won’t
Be anymore I miss your brother to quote Tennessee Williams life is partly what we make it and partly what is made by the friends we choose my life was better because several decades ago Mark picked up the phone and chose me and I bet so many of yours are better
For meeting knowing loving Mark green thank you let us pray thanks Lord God whose son left us in the sacrament of his body food for the journey mercifully grant that strengthened by it our brother Mark may come to the Eternal table of Christ who lives and reigns forever and ever amen
One last note there are on the table in theard memories before we go our seate ways let us take leave of our brother may our farewell express our affection for him may it ease our sadness and strengthen our f one day we shall joyfully greet him
Again when the love of Christ covers all things destroys even death itself To you and lead you to the holy city the new and eternal Jerusalem May the choirs of angels welome you where Lazarus is no etal rest may you et to you oh Lord we commend the soul of your servant Mar in the sight of the
