Leaders when addressing his nonviolent posture to ensure total inclusivity the man I will spend a few minutes speaking about this morning won the Nobel Peace Prize at the young age of 35 authored several books and pinned countless articles and sermons writings that challenged the philosophical and Theological ideas of Americans in the
Mid 20th century No the man I am speaking about today was not a product of an Ivy League College Harvard Princeton or Yale the man we remember today was produced and mentored by the faculty and staff of a prominent HBCU morouse College like FAMU the faculty and staff

Round of applause that’s how rers strike I want to give a special shout out to my predecessor Dr Maurice excuse me president Maurice Edington who also played a vital role in that great accomplishment now Dr King understood that education was a powerful tool for social change he said the function of
Education is to teach one to think intensively and think critically intelligence plus character that is the goal of Education I also believe in the power and transformative nature of Education in particular and education from the HBCU see HBCU have produced 40% of all black engineers and 50% of all black lawyers in
America 70% of black doctors in our country attended in HBCU and 60% of black judges are alums of these institutions as a first generation student pursuing a chemistry degree from an HBCU Lincoln University of Pennsylvania never did I imagine that I would be serving in the capacity as the
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the number one public HBCU in the country God is good amen the journey was not easy but I would say it was rewarding each setback each obstacle provided an opportunity to grow and learn and Inspire others partly
Because of the charge Dr King gave us in his most sighted I Have a Dream speech out of the Mountain of Despair a stone of Hope fam we have always been encouraged to find Hope in moments of hopelessness just listen to the words of of a rather charge when the dark clouds
Gather when we collaborate and work together we can lead by example Dr King didn’t just talk to talk he walked to walk he actively participated in protests and endured the hardships alongside those he led leading by example Fosters trust and respect among followers we must never forget
That we’re where we’re all in this together and we all succeed together as I examine my return to FAMU I am reminded that Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s leadership Legacy inspires leaders worldwide in emphasizing the importance of moral courage inclusively inclusivity and a Relentless pursuit of Justice in the face of
Adversity Dr King’s fight to address Injustice in healthc care of African-Americans influenced my decision in 1995 to pursue a faculty position in one of the leading Pharmacy programs in the nation the FAMU College of Pharmacy and pharmaceutical Sciences the perfect environment at an HBCU to address healthc care disparities
In stroke diab diabetes CLE cell and cardiovascular disease see Dr King understood that racial disparities in health are impacted by non-medical factors known as social determinants of Health among several items systemic racism and unconscious bias are influencers of social determinant of Health which include education access and quality economic stability Health
Care access and quality and the community envirment that we live in in a Stern speech to the medical committee for human rights in 1966 Dr Martin Luther King Jr said of all of the forms of inequality Injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane it was those words that
Attracted me to fam you’s College of Pharmacy to collaborate with experts such as Dr Otis kiry the past president of American Diabetes Association and Dr Maurice holder a White House fellow in an outstanding cardiovascular physiologist to address social determinant of Health it has been 58 years since the
Speech to the medical Committee of Human Rights and sadly not much has changed there is still work to be done and FAMU FAMU is poised and committed to answer Dr King’s call on this front of Injustice and healthc Care manam provos our strategic plan boldly striking lays
Out a road map for FAMU to emerge as a worldclass leader in healthcare education research and service to address disparities emergent needs and advanced holistic willbe FAMU health will be let me repeat FAMU health will be a leader in providing culturally competent Health Care to the Community State and the
Nation like Dr King we must be adaptable in our approach to the evolving circumstances and adjust to a new occurrence new occurr urces as they arise this adaptability is needed to demonstrate flexibility and pragmatism in pursuing the ultimate goal and sustained success effective communication is crucial for any leader to convey their
Vision Inspire others and build a sense of purpose without question Dr King was an exceptional communicator and I look forward to working with President Robinson our new board of trustee chair Christen Harper provos Allison Watson and their respective leadership roles and then even more importantly with the family

An university has supported and encouraged the community that’s a beacon of opportunity and inclusion for all students faculty and staff regardless of race or place of national origin that inclusivity dwells comfortably on our campuses where we also believe in the academic freedom civil discourse free speech and the open exchange of
Ideas our commitment remains strong training students not only for careers but to make a difference in the communities where they live and work the model Excellence with Karen encapsulates the Dual nature of our mission FAMU FAMU continues to be a transformational institution a FAMU education has changed the economic trajectory of Untold
Families for Generations we are proud of our mission and unwavering commitment and inherit Heritage as we reflect on Dr King we are reminded how true his words remain today Dr King would say life’s most persistent and Urgent question is what are you doing for others make a career of
Humanity commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights you will make yourself a better person a greater nation of your country and a finer world to live in when it comes to preparing Leaders of Tomorrow to take their rightful place Dr King would say whatever affects whatever affects one directly affects all
Indirectly I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be this is the interrelated structure of reality and when it comes to creating change Dr King would say a true leader a true leader is not a Searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus if
You can’t fly then run if you can’t run then walk if you can’t walk then crawl but whatever you do you must keep moving forward fam let’s celebrate Dr Martin Luther King Jr not just as a historical figure but as a symbol of Hope a guid and light in our

For coming and joining us we’re going to really give you a little bit more attention lately so this is always a special day for me um I may have said this many times you know first of all tomorrow I would celebrate let’s see 28 years said f mute I don’t know I can’t
Add anymore something like that I mean y’all y’all can get the math right it’s probably wrong but um on my birthday in 1997 kicked me out of the house and said go find a job I headed to FAMU and I started on famu’s payroll on January the 13th 1997
Tomorrow right so it’s been a wonderful Journey for me and one of the things I did while I uh worked in Oakridge Tennessee at oakd National Laboratory I actually served as the naac branch president for for Oakridge for six years and when I arrived we did not have in
Oage um a celebration or really they hadn’t proclaimed the holiday and I did something perhaps in my youth that was probably very foolish might not do that today but I went around to the homes of the members of the city council who had not voted in
Favor of it to ask them why and if I could count on their votes for the future right now you probably didn’t want to do that kind of thing today so I’m not suggesting that to young people it’s dangerous out there it was dangerous then but ultimately we got the
Holiday approved and we celebrated it quite extensively in the city of Rog gridge and then I come here to Tallahasse right in the middle of the Martin Luther King celebration and I got to see what you just saw from Luther Wells right right can you
Imagine how much I had to share with my wife who was still in Oakridge how I think we made the right decision Shar and FAMU and Tallahassee is the right place and so this community is always celebrated uh Dr King it hasn’t been without his struggles but I was said
I’ve always been impressed with the leadership of this community to recognize and in fact many of our students and administrators were those great movers and shakers in the civil rights movement over the years so I really am proud to stand here before you as famu’s 12th president at this very special
Time the other thing I’ll I’ll say before I sit down is that you know both my wife and I were born and raised in Memphis Tennessee I was 13 years old when Dr King was assassinated right old enough to to know and understand and see
All of the things that were going on in our community because we stayed on the south side of town the the sanitation workers were people we knew they were our neighbors Etc and we were so optimistic that Dr King would come to Memphis and make a difference in their
Lives ultimately he did a profound difference in their lives but all of our Lives as well but he gave his life to make that happen and that touched me in a very special way uh throughout my life one thing I felt was some sense of guilt
How did I let Dr King die in my hometown of Memphis Tennessee I turned that around eventually to start saying what can I do what little can I do to help accelerate the dream that Dr Mar Luther King Jr had for all of us and I think
That’s all I ask and that’s all we all need need to do there will never be another Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Jr but there’s always a you and it’s always something that you can do to move us closer to the promised land that’s
All we ask of you here at FAMU we get you ready for the world and we know that you’re going to be excellent you’re going to be caring and you’re going to help move your families and your communicate and your communities closer to that special place we all dream about from
The legacy of this great gentleman the Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Jr so thank you all for joining us this morning it has been my honor uh for to see so many of you out the weather isn’t great but the time is ideal for us to recommit ourselves to the
Life of this great person the Reverend Dr mther King Jr thank you so much thank asion okay I I just got a message that there a couple of people I can’t uh I must acknowledge first of all the um the daycare we don’t call it a day care what’s the official name Dr

Know the great things that happened here every year but a few years ago our football stadium was in really bad shape folks and I just want to thank the Blue Print intergovernmental Agency for the $10 million that they provided this institution to get that Stadium playable and so thank you so much for
That uh Williams Cox you can tell those others that I gave them a shout out to but they weren’t here to to hear it but thank you so much and have a wonderful rest of your day those of you who won’t be joining us for what comes next in
Terms of the celebration so with that um turn it over to the now we will have our Alma moer by the university wi Symphony The Year H Son That [Applause] now we will end off um oh wait I’m sorry do we need okay now we will end off with our benediction by Reverend Mill this was a wonderful ceremony come on let’s give a hand praise for all of the participants I pray that this ceremony that it open and awaken the dreamer
Inside of all of you I pray that the dreamer inside of all of you that it is awakened to a point where you understand that you don’t even have to see a dream in order to believe and have the faith for it to come to pass all you got to do
Is just trust and if you can trust God can make ways out of no way now may the love of God be with you may the joy and the peace that all of us deserve May the carriage that God gave Dr King may live with all of you from hence forth now and
Forever and the people of God say thank God I would like to acknowledge commissioner Cummings I believe she’s with us this morning commissioner Cummings thank you ma’am CU you were part of that blueprint as well thank you so much you know thank you and good morning everyone we’re going to turn it
