Hello everyone and welcome to the National Constitution Center my name is ARA Springfield and today I am in the 19th Amendment exhibit which details the women’s suffrage movement so it talks about the movement from the cynical Falls convention in 1848 all the way to the ratification and passage of the 19th amendment in
1920 this document that I have to the left of me is a document written by ell M quander she’s one of the founders of the alpha chapter of Alpac Kappa Alpha Sor Incorporated which was founded in January 15th 1908 on the campus of Howard University and in this document she
Writes this letter to Alice Paul basically one of the principal organizers of the women’s suffrage movement and of course the procession that happened in 1913 basically asking for someone to come to the University from the movement to speak to some of of the women at Howard University about how
They could get more involved in the movement she also mentioned that if she were to be made to march in the back of the procession as a black women organization then she would not want to attend so ultimately Alice Paul did not respond to the letter um and as a result
The sority did not March in the first women’s procession in Washington DC so if you want to learn more about this document and of course other black suffrages within the movement like Charlotte Fort and grimy Francis Harper adab Wells you can always go to our Founders library on constitutioncenter.org
Thank you so much have a great day
