Unchecked um accountability you know the pledging and aging hazing process I have had people that I know and others who have died um in incidents where that has went too far um there is history throughout divided line early years and certain groups where there’s been some acts and
Conversations of um colorism there has been acts and conversations about cover-ups around rape culture there has been a lot of violence in our own you want to talk about you know violence in our streets but there’s been violence within our college campuses in ways that have involved it and I’ve seen things
I know things and I think that there has not been a tougher policy to protect some of our young black men and women who have been involved in those processes there’s been a lot of instances where I just feel like there should have been stronger statements uh tougher stances
Um to make sure that this process doesn’t get the reputation it’s gotten for certain College people you know I have a brother who is currently in college and you know the kind of conversations we’re having at the dinner table about what that looks like and what that means
Um I just feel like it’s there’s a lot of unchecked cultural issues that has not been addressed homophobia Within These institutions that have not been checked and I just think that that’s what I’m speaking on is somebody who would have loved to see more people that look like
Me be a part not not like where it gets the situation where an undergrad people I saw at my school I’ll talk for my experience I’ve seen a lot of people in my school go in the closet to pledge and they were like I’m hiding my identity I’m lying about who I am
Because they will not accept me or let me enter and then they go through the process and then years later they come out and then finally that’s what they do but I’m like that’s Brotherhood you know that what so so you’re saying so you you touched on a few things so I
Want to respond to some of them sure rape culture college campuses yes fraternities or sororities are not that exists it exists on the college campus oh we do but I’m saying in our community we per we we have created environments and again I’m not trying to name everything but I have gone to
Parties and there’s been Customs at certain parties that open the floodgates for situations to happen I’ve seen the behavior listen what people understand is funny about Greek life and this is my my one little critique is that Greek life’s relevance and Allure so the masses at large involves non-members
Participation our participation to go to the parties our participation to go to the the probates to all of the things it requires the observation and involvement and participation of non-greek members those who might pay the dues of their siblings and their family members it’s it’s a it’s a community investment
And what’s funny is that it’s all fun for the non-members to go to the parties to go to the probate to go to the Gators to go to the fundraisers do all these things but then when we ask questions about the nature of the money where is our money
Going where is our resources going where is our energy and our intellectual what is happening to our daughters our sons our children what’s happening then it becomes you’re not a part of it you can’t speak on it but you wasn’t saying that when I was invited to the Galas you
Wasn’t saying that when I was invited to the parties you wasn’t saying that question that’s not true so so there is a there is no that’s not true here’s why I said it’s not true fine 99 99.9 percent of our fundraisers across the board go basically to either Mentor programs or
Scholarship programs there’s there’s no profit there’s no profit and that’s right you think so let me respond okay sure right the if you go to a party you got a return on your investment so on one end the fraternity sorority raise funds for their non-profit that is is specified and non-profits are public
Information so you go research and see what it’s for right what happened to the house in Philadelphia what happens to the campus didn’t didn’t someone just get you know um okay that’s people still he stole right that but that’s not that’s not part of what we do
He stole he was prosecuted we didn’t say oh brother so and so stole from us he gets a pass no that ass got excommunicated and he’s and he got prosecuted it’s federal information you can find it I’m not disagreeing with that I don’t know so just like in government people have
Stolen in government and they have been punished and it’s a non-profit entity right so we we can’t remove the human element out of eternities and sororities and say if you join a fraternity sorority now all of a sudden you’re not human and you’re not inclined to do something that’s not cool
No that doesn’t happen but the the if someone wanted to look at what we did with our funds again we’re non-profit organizations public information I just feel like your bias is showing and getting super defensive no no I want to give you another example moving you’re moving the conversation farther
What I’m saying where did the money go I wasn’t with that question okay but what I was just let me give you one other example and see if you see the parallel there or so as you were giving the example of uh what happens with exclusive groups versus non-members I was thinking about
College sports teams the same thing happens there people come they donate their parents donate and so folks can get what they need to be part of the sports teams very often they have their own parties those are exclusive hazing often goes on there hazing behaving yeah they’re not they’re not non-profits though
But we know where the money goes because they’re a university organization I I hear what you’re saying but I don’t think it’d be proper to compare football clubs to Greek life I just no I think there’s a different expectation there’s there’s a there’s a different distinction there
There you know there’s a different tier that to which these organizations Pride themselves on history and I don’t think it’s that of the same of a football club in my opinion and the standards are a lot different I think there’s a different upholding so for them to act in ways like that a
Rowdy football team if you’re comparing the way that they Haze that to a distinguished group of black men of excellence and standards I think that we shouldn’t be going in the same types of tier of practices I think what’s interesting is we’re modeling white behavior that type of hazing for
Fraternity culture is white people’s behavior that’s what they do why are people doing that why are we paddling people why are we forcing people to drink while we’re feeding people with paddles I’ve never seen what I’m saying okay we know that when it comes to forcing people to drink
That is something that is largely done with white fraternities it is I can’t speak to I can’t speak to that okay because I’ve never been in a white fraternity or surround I’ve never I’ve never gone to a white fraternity or sorority party okay I don’t know one person who’s in a white
Fraternity or sorority okay I do I can say first off let me say the capital size non-hazing organization we just cheating train for leadership wasn’t there it’s been a new and somebody was not a noob let me let me for those who know they know and for those who don’t want what’s
The difference though I want you to ask me what’s the difference between a nuke and a non-new but let me I want to finish uh making my statement I’ll come back to that okay and so and I’m a new [Laughter] and so as I was saying Capital size and
Not hazing organization we just can’t frame for leadership right that’s right but there has when you say oh that’s white people’s stuff yeah when I when I look at African rights of Passage we ain’t beating people of like Crips and blood I’m not going with your counter I just
Want to get mine out we have seen people go through all sorts of physical challenges sometimes they have to fight and endure all sorts of physical challenges am I saying it’s all the same no but I do believe there’s something very significant to having rights of Passage in Black
Communities for our people whether it be Rites of Passage in Africa or whether it be Rites of Passage um in Prince Hall Masonry whether it be Rites of Passage in a divine nine setting I don’t agree with the practices and that rights of practice passage I don’t
Maybe it was different when at your age because you’re much older than me have you participated in have you ever participated in the process no no comment you know that you can’t tell me the difference between the new and those who know no I will not answer that
Question okay what I will tell you is that I know things that I would say it it I’ve seen people go to jail I’ve seen people who have I’ve witnessed a lot and I will say that I think that it’s Unbecoming of black men because I don’t know what black
Women are doing I can’t speak on that but I think it’s Unbecoming of the types of things we put our our young black men through in order to feel a connection what I will tell you is as someone who’s not Greek I will tell you that all of
Black men are my brothers I’m going to support them as much as I can I’m going to love them as much as they can I’ve never felt a need to say well you’re a nuke so that means you’re gonna get my story or you would if well when you you
Reached out to me to come on this show you okay I came on the show because you’re a black man that wants to do the work has nothing to do with affiliations and things I just think as a community we appreciate right now that I feel like we sometimes create
These systems that I guess we want to but I just feel like we just are not in that space to create these distinctions because when it gets down to it the power struggles and the things that be what does it matter I mean it’s like I
Guess it’s a niche right like oh I want to have Polo shoes versus this why does it matter but we don’t do that as a matter of fact they’re the older you get the more there is a bond Cross organization okay well what I’m talking about where I’m just
Saying from my perspective as a millennial what I’m seeing on my end it’s easy to be someone who’s been 30 years through it to have this understanding but what I’m saying is this is a yada young black man coming through these institutions and whatever I don’t know what happened with the
Mentorship I don’t know what’s happening but the way in which they’re understanding is history understanding their purpose on these campuses it’s fallen short Kappa Alpha Psi has been providing free mentorship to young black men for over a hundred years I got one the scholarships I know I know I’ve got
To win the scholarships but what I’m saying is and for non-members like yourself to get our money the money I told you we raised it our parties and functions and dollars yeah back to black men I hear all of that I’m just saying that I think
In my opinion we could agree to disagree on this okay I personally believe and I want to go too much into it but I personally believe that in America we have black in some black spaces we have created elitist caste systems that further marginalizes Us in the name of trying to distinguish us
That’s just what I believe I think that when you think about some of these other institutions not gonna go into all these names of them but I feel like all these distinctions and merits for what our people are starting for all of this black leadership and Excellence we are
About to elect another non-black person as mayor with all of this influence with all of this power and Prestige we can’t come together and get this vice president some support so that she doesn’t look embarrassed in the public what have we done with all of this Prestige and power our community I think
We have done some things I didn’t say we haven’t done anything and we’re not operating we’re not operating in a vacuum it’s not like there’s not constant opposition all I’m saying is that they’re talking about we talked about baynard Rustin they not Rustin was working alongside Martin Luther King Jr Alpha Phi out
He was walk working along Jesse Jackson Omega sci-fi he was working along with men all of whom when you look on that balcony before Dr King is murdered there’s a alpha in himself there’s a Kappa there’s an Omega and there’s a sigma all pushing the directly for the the advancement and
Interest of civil rights whether it be Colin Kaepernick who took a knee as a member of Kappa Alpha Psi whether it be uh giving a positive role model in Philadelphia’s quarterback Jalen hurts and Omega whether it be the vice president of the United States of alcohol uh Alpha Kappa
Alpha or whether it be Delta Sigma Theta who’s very strongly influential in the women’s suffrage movement we can’t find a time when black people were part of the divine nine have not participated in Grass root struggles just two days ago Huey P Newton’s birthday who you P Newton was a member
Of of Phi Beta Sigma so where where there is struggle where there is struggling and for the advancements of our people you will find a member of the Divine mind that’s fine but they’re all black and we’re all black and there’s tons of people that not Greek whose main impact is not
Relevant and we’re not greedy we belong to a black Greek lettered organization not panhellenic I got you I’m just saying at the end of the day we’re all black um and at the end of the day I just don’t care I don’t care I’m being a millennial I just don’t care I just
Think that what I’m focused all black why you gotta be a millennial I’m saying that I’ll be blessed I feel like these are the conversations I have on people your age I’m not having with my people I’m having with them I’m not having conversations this is ages age yourselves
I know but this is not to me I just feel like at the end of the day there’s too many things on the table right now there’s too many things happen in our community right now and we as the community need to just can we get together in Philadelphia and get a plan
To address this poverty okay I like that so lastly Ernest you were calling for and I’ve been calling for this on this show with Randy Robinson yes the establishment of a black political agenda can we yes yes that we hold accountable to any one of these Mayors
Who wins yes but I don’t see Helen him being held accountable to a black political agenda if one day she’s on Broad Street Fight Against Racism and then the next day she bunches it up with the races I don’t disagree I don’t disagree with children I don’t yeah you
Acted like I endorse I don’t endorse any of these candidates I’m not saying she is not at the end of the day what we should do is give a racist no I don’t think she’s a racist well she can what she uh busting it up with the
Races that she was just fighting against I I don’t think she’s a racist I think Mom was that wrong for her to do that I think what she did was Yeah I broke that yes I’m the one who broke the story yes she’s wrong who took the picture I will never
Disclose that you don’t just go a good journalist never disclosed their sources okay and then you want to want me to uh tell you uh how do I become a new I just wanted you to know the distinction and what you have to understand is I’ve dated people throughout degree
Circles I know more than I should know let’s just say that and their spouses and everybody else but you don’t know it all you I don’t and I would never disclose you don’t disclose I understand that like I’m just saying I am just saying that with this Black Agenda we should be
Trying to focus on giving every of those candidates an opportunity to to shake it or bake it either they got it or they don’t have it but we need to not be so preemptive I think the problem that I see in our community leaders is that we’re quick to already write people off
Or know where they’re going I think you need to get people to rope to hang themselves if they if they rise to the occasion they’re gonna rise if they don’t do but what we do often sometimes and you see this with these endorsement meetings we’re not letting people apply
We’re not letting people have the meetings we’re just automatically writing them off you know what they do they run off and say I would have done it but I wasn’t invited no invite them let them feel that discomfort let them have to be accountable for the things
They do I think one of the things we did wrong in some cases we shut these certain people off and what we’ve done in doing that is that we don’t give them a chance to further explain so as a journalist it’s my job to have to get people to explain to to explain
Why they did what they did to to figure out where their head is at I may not agree but the end of the day the public should know and if you believe in the public like you claim that you do they’ll make sound judgment and take
That decision making to the polls but if you’re rigging the system if you only invited some people if you’re leaving some people out if you’re doing all these little things then you’re not actually allowing democracy to happen so I personally believe that there should
Be a black agenda I do think that all of these candidates need to really be answering so it I need to stop using their black friends and their black Sarah gets to speak on their behalf because I’m seeing too many black people speaking on behalf of white candidates I
Don’t want to see the middleman the middle man should have been running for mayor I want to see you you need to open your mouth and you need to talk about what your policies are and what you’re going to do not sending these black folks to these barber shops talking on
Your behalf saying that so and so wish you well they they send the black folks in our neighborhoods but then they’re going out to Center seeing the pyramid club and the Fiddler Club have their little fundraisers and showing their face for white folks we should be getting that face time with them too
And I just feel like we don’t get that because oftentimes us as black people accept the handouts I’m not accepting any handouts you know an organization I’m a part of the Philadelphia Association black journalist we’re having a mayoral Candace Forum at the Museum of the American Revolution on Thursday
April 20th around six o’clock P.M I need a press pass you can come I’m telling you can come I’m hosting it you can come and what we’re doing is we’re actually going to um we’re inviting the media and we’re inviting the community we are having a the conversation is on black issues
There you go this forum is about black issues and I’ve emphasized that to the candidates all of the candidates have confirmed so your heavyweighters are coming they all agree their teams agreed you know we don’t know if all 11 will make it by the time we get sued right
You know then but at right now we have reached out they have confirmed attendance it’s going down on April 20th 4 20. it’s going to be a good time and we are working I am working to just hold up your book with the next the next time
We’ll talk strictly about the case for cancel culture with Philadelphia polarizing journalists oh my God black accountability call me up there you go all the rising go ahead we’re gonna talk cancel coaching the next time we we uh interview I said I wanted to get to it
Uh I would be remissing my duty if I don’t spend at least a full show on your book I think it’ll be worthy yeah it’s it’s coming out you know it’s coming out very soon it’s it’s wherever book stores are sell you get it online I’m also doing the
Audiobook I Am The Voice okay audiobook I’m narrating the book so if you are audiobook listeners you don’t like to read her backs it’s fine you can hear my voice will we be able to find it in uncle Bobby’s I mean yeah you have to ask your frat but it’ll be a Harriet’s
No you need to ask my frat okay you you’re just Pro black I needed uncle Bobby’s I would like to be there listen I don’t you listen I’m not disagreeing I would love to have it there you know he’s not too Keen of me um from what I heard in the streets he’s
Not too fond of me now there go your Wendy Williams stuff I just said he’s about to find the rookie Williams have you talked to him never talked in a while I was upset let me tell you what happened with him oh here we go I was upset with him specifically because he
Said we could afford a trump presidency back in 2016. and I was just like no we cannot not I I can’t afford a trump presidency but he was saying something along the lines of just saying we could afford a trump presidency I just thought it was weird he was supporting a green Party
Candidate and I was just like dude the world is on fire and you over here supporting a third party candidate man like come on they have third-party candidates elected in the city no I’m talking about for president in 2016. like do like in my opinion you don’t
Believe in democracy I do I just thought that was stupid has not every single black potential election there have been a third party candidate that could vote black people are pragmatic black women black voters are pragmatic I’m a pragmatic voter at the end of the day okay that race I I’m sorry but
I was not supporting I I support the person who had the most viability to win I’ll call and I was not going to let Trump win I’ll call him and ask him to give you an exclusive book signing at Uncle Bobby all right let’s see that if you could
Pull that off will you go get the gold star if you I want to see if you already got the gold star I don’t need it you get the Platinum star but I already see it I want to see that if you can make that happen I would be shook surprise me
