Hello everybody happy Monday quick question are you trying to find startup funding for your nonprofit but you’re frustrated because you don’t know where to start you don’t know where to look I am doing a quick live tonight to give you three areas where you probably are missing opportunities to find money so
Really quickly I am not in my regular space I’m out of town for a family thing so hopefully this is okay see my nephew in the back he wanted to go live with me on Instagram there he goes so um we’re just GNA be really really quick because
We had to do Monday Night Live instead of Sunday Night Live so if you want to know how to make money let’s go put a money bag in the chat or just say it’s me so for the last couple weeks that’s all we’ve been focusing on is money hey
Josh good to see you and so tonight’s not going to be any different but I really want us to be able to focus and Zone in and go for it okay so if you’re new here my name is Tiffany I created a boss in a budget to help people start
Their nonprofits and raise money from the ground up because nobody talks from that perspective everybody talks over other people’s heads when they’re teaching about nonprofits but I wanted to share from my experience so I am sharing what I learned about starting from the ground up if you have a
Nonprofit y’all introduce yourselves in the chat say hello right introduce your organization tell us where you’re from because we’re building community and we’re getting ready we’re getting ready I see you Ma for the launch of the activate your purpose and profit I had to change the
Name y’all but if you are not on the weit list make sure you’re on the weight list because there’s a lot of good stuff that’s gonna be happen over the last over the next couple of weeks all right hey Kim hey Nikki hey Cindy all right
Y’all ready this is going to be a quick one let’s go ahead and get started we’re going to talk about three missed opportunities and I hope as you as we go through this you don’t Focus just on what I’m saying you focus on the bigger picture of it all the bigger picture of
It all is you you do have opportunities to make money I hear from people all the time who say I did a fundraising campaign and I only raised $1,000 or I could barely raise $1,000 and I want you to know that with efforts and energy you
Can raise money and I’m going to show you some strategies for that tonight okay so go ahead and drop number one in the chat for me just to let me know you you are here I am on Hotel Wi-Fi so I know it’s gonna be a delay it may be
Some issues so I hope everything’s okay I hope everything’s all right and y’all y’all gonna have some entertainment tonight okay so all right M you gonna be my sound effect for tonight all right so what’s the sound effect for for number one okay beatbox okay
Okay all right number one this one is a big one and I’mma I’m gonna explain what I’m saying when I’m saying this number one is family and friends all right number one is family and friends and I apologize on Instagram if it keeps pausing I’m in a really bad
Area I’m trying my best if you want to see me better then come on over YouTube or Facebook Okay um I say family and friends and I know some of y’all cringe and they’re like what my family and my friends they don’t support oh I’ve burnt
Them out right but I want you to understand is that your assumptions about what your family will or won’t do or can or can’t do is going to stop you from raising money how many of y’all have ever gotten like a letter or or a request from a family member this used
To happen a lot in my family you tell me if this was you we would have like a younger person who was like going on a missionary trip or they were doing something for school and you got this letter in the mail right and it was like
Oh help join such and such do this she’s very excited about this we need every family every family member to get $50 have any of y’all ever got that letter anybody okay so that that letter has produced thousands and thousands of dollars it doesn’t matter who it was for
Or who it was addressed to that strategy worked so I remember the last time this happened to me my cousin was going to like she was either going like Haiti or somewhere in um an African country and she raised like $5,000 to go on this mission trip so why do y’all think it
Worked though why do y’all think that worked because what I’m trying to get you to understand is the what’s under fundraising like you think that you have to do a specific strategy or you think you got to do an event or you think you got to give
People something in order to raise money but in that kind of strategy did she give anything she probably didn’t she probably sent a thank you letter I know she sent a thank you note she might have sent something cute like a bookmark or something like that but she did
Not she that’s it right she didn’t give anything for that so that’s what I want you guys to understand that there are people in your network right now who will get excited about something that you’re doing and who will give but I’m going to tell you the difference with
That okay it’s not hey y’all I just launched my new initiative I just launched my nonprofit help me by launching and that’s it anything you can help anything that you give can help right I want to break down why that doesn’t work as well first of all it’s very
Vague it’s anything you can give can help whereas the example I gave she asked for $50 from every family member all right so another example of how it’s different is she gave specifics about what she was going to do and why she was doing it and she put pictures in there
And she gave a story behind why she wanted to do it right that’s the difference between just help me because I started my nonprofit people want to hear good stories they want to hear that you’re doing good things right and when you tempt them with the story they’re
Intrigued right they want to see what’s what could happen and what could be now here’s the thing y’all I know some of y’all thinking yeah my family and my friends they don’t support me um so if I put something like that they’re not going to they’re not going to get to me
The reality is in any campaign it’s very rare that 100% of the people that you reach out to are going to give so I need you to approach it that way understanding that 100% are not going to give hey Cheryl right so why would you expect 100% of your family to give because
People are people people don’t have the money or people get distracted or people don’t want to support you and that’s okay but you are really if you’re not allowing your pride to go down and ask your family and your friends to let them know you’re doing something you are
Completely missing out on an opportunity I think um I’ve shared this story before but before I go to number two I’mma share really quickly Gerald Moore he started Mission fulfilled 2030 he did my first podcast episode with a nonprofit activator he talked about how he had a rough life growing up things that
Happened to him him that influen who he is and why he helps black boys nobody knew in his work his like in his Circle and it wasn’t until he shared his story on LinkedIn and his friends and his family were like what you’re doing this and this is
Your story of course I want to give so he was so focused on not wanting to reveal or thinking that people wouldn’t understand or people wouldn’t want to hear the story but people actually craved to know more about him they craved to know what he was what he had
Going on they craved to know that something was happening in a community and it was through his story that that happened so I know that you know you may be apprehensive for some of y’all asking your family and friends or you feel like you already asked your family and
Friends and they didn’t support a lot of times it’s because they can’t see the vision you just telling them I’m starting a nonprofit a lot of people are not going to be moved by that but they’re moved by stories they’re moved by emotion they’re moved by your passion
When you share why this is so important to you those who care about you will move they will be activated and you fundraising for your family and friends is your first opportunity to learn how to be persuasive because as a nonprofit founder that’s your job you got to
Convince everybody you meet that this is a worthy cause you got to get your practice in so why not get your practice in with your family and your friends the people who you know right that’s number one y’all I’mma stop here for a second and just for those who came in to let
You know I am in a hotel I’m out of town for a family thing and the the Wi-Fi is a hot mess so I can’t see any comments but I wanted to go live I probably skipping on Instagram I probably gonna look at the replay and
Gon be like what in the world so I am not ignoring you I just cannot see I literally can’t see any comments or see anything scrolling on my screen so my apologies y’all but I had to get this in all right number two drop number two in
The chat ma what’s the number what’s the second sound effect oh I got one that’s number two number two is is clubs and associations in your area a lot of y’all sleep on this right and this is so interesting because I am actually in North Carolina and we went
To a restaurant a little bit earlier and as I was walking to the bathroom I saw a plaque on the wall and the plaque on the wall said the Kiwanis meet here how many people know what the Kiwani are since I cannot interact with the chat how about
Y’all y’all support each other y’all ask questions of each other ask answer each other’s questions because I can’t see anything it’s like literally nothing scrolling and I know y’all talking to me because y’all always talk to me because y’all the best so if you don’t know who
The kaanis are say I don’t know who that is or what that is and if you do know try to explain in the chat but I’m also going to explain so the kaanis I actually don’t even know the full history and they came to be but it is
Like a club where people get together and they help support projects they pull their money together and they support people who are doing good stuff in the community so you can hook up with the Kanani group and you can do a presentation um and they will they may
Fund you the same with the Lions Club there are different Lions Clubs in different Geographic areas and you can hook up with the people or you could be a part of the club yourself and recommend your nonprofit to come in and do a presentation for your nonprofit
Another thing you may not know about is called giving circles how many of y’all have heard of giving circles I might have to give up on Instagram because it’s not connected giving circles they are basically the simplest definition I can give you is groups of people who come together and they pull
Their money and they make decisions about where the money will go go and it’s usually not as cumbersome as going through like a a proposal process or going through a foundation and they’re usually are either locally based geographically based or around the topic hey Kika it’s oh it came through I can
See the comments now out of nowhere Lord that’s so weird thank you kamik I don’t have my money gun mace we got a yes yes o thank you for the donut thank you thank you for the $20 thank you for the2 all right so thank you so much Kik you the
Bom I can’t see the Lamborghini okay so giving circles they’re usually around the topic a lot of times they’re women most giving circles that I’ve seen have been women but they often are like Affinity groups so they could be um the black community or the Hispanic
Community a lot of them tend to be women and if you know these women are people who are part of these circles they can recommend you and it’s way easier than approaching them and knowing on you and going in cold so let me say a couple things about about this first things
First if you want to attach yourself to the Lions Club or the Kanis then you need to be prepared to talk about your nonprofit if you’re going to come present and share information my question to you is what are you going to say what are you going to present do you
Have some kind of presentation that talks about the work that you do do you know what you need from them have you outlined a hit list to say okay I know I’m going to ask for $5,000 because I know that’s typically what they give and
When they ask me what that $5,000 is for I got something for them right somebody hit me up in the DMS and I’m sorry I can’t remember and if you feel like I’m talking about you I’m not cuz I don’t even remember what your profile was but
Somebody was asking me about you know fundraising and um I asked like what were your goals and they said they didn’t know they didn’t have any goals and I said well how much you trying to raise and they’re like well I’m not sure and the reason why you’re not sure is
Because you haven’t decided for yourself what you’re going to do for the year he really wanted to come on live y’all he have it you doing the effects okay um you have to decide for yourself okay these are the activities that we’re going to get done and it’s even more the
Activities these activities are going to make this outcome and as a result of this outcome this person or these group of people are going to be made better so when you present yourself to the Kanis and you present yourself to the Lions Club or whatever you’re presenting it as
If the people are now better or going to be better because you invested right it’s not oh our organization is going to be able to grow that’s a good thing too that’s a byproduct of it that’s not what you lead with that’s why that’s not what you lead
With right so you got to always be clear what the bottom line is what is the bottom line y’all somebody’s life has changed somebody’s life is improved but for every one of y’all your mission is different so you have to know for yourself what’s your speech what’s your
Spiel so you got to be ready and in a moment’s notice to talk about what you do but not just what you do anticipate what you say when somebody says okay how can I help are you really prepared to respond when somebody says what do you
Need because I get a lot of people who are shocked that they talk to people and then that’s the question they get and then they’re like oh snap I don’t know so I want you to be prepared to me that’s a missed opportunity when you don’t know what to say and somebody asks
You what do you need you’re going to always undercut yourself in my opinion in my opinion some people go for the go goal though some people be like a million dollars don’t do that so I just want you to to look in look in your area look for all the
Opportunities and don’t discount anything you never know who you’re talking to who they’re attached to and how they want to help you but even in that sense I want you to to be prepared so you know what to say and how to say it I want you to have a speech memorized
Or some wording memorized that hits right here everybody’s nonprofit has a powerful story what is your most powerful story y’all what’s your most powerful story that you can present or you can show to a potential donor I want you to think about that and I want you
To use that to drive you when you’re asking for money that need or that powerful story is what should drive any fundraising ask you should be thinking about the people and what’s your ultimate why why am I doing this why am I sacrificing my time my
Money my time I’m supposed to be working all of that Mr Eric said hi Ma hi hey Eric that’s right they need coaching y’all gotta be coach to this process I’m getting on the Instagram don’t worry okay all right I’m getting I’m getting I’m getting getting on the Instagram all right so
The second opportunity is the the local clubs and associations in your area and I want you to think and don’t forget the giving circles okay but just think about groups of people who congregate together who typically are are congregating for a good purpose or they have social impact
In mind there are a lot of women’s groups that are formed that want to help somebody and so many times they want to help but they don’t know who needs help oh Miss Cindy says she loves you mate oh thank you yes let’s hype up Tiffany she said
She had her first fundraiser Valentine’s Day B basket raffle we made 535 not much but I was so happy that is much that’s more than zero dollars let’s hype up Tiffany Money G money money all right okay so y’all drop number three because we’re not gonna be here
Long because this hotel WiFi is a struggling it’s a struggling okay number three you got a sound effect for number Three okay that’s the sound effect for number three and that is your place of employment or former places of employment so I want y’all to think about all of the people that you have interacted with in your professional career so if I were to do my own inventory I’ve had one two three
Three jobs before I went out on my own and at every one of those jobs I was exposed to and interacted with a lot of different people there may not be people I interact with every day but if I reached out to them they would they
Would know who I am wouldn’t they so I want you to think about all the different places that you’ve worked and all the people you have been exposed to in your jobs and I want to I want you to think about all those people who might be excited
Who might be energized to hear that you’re doing some kind of great project the issue is a lot of people are like oh I want to reach out they gonna think I’m begging or they haven’t heard from me in 10 years why would they want
To hear from me now what I want you to do is lose all of that because what you’re doing is centering yourself and centering your feelings or centering your fears or your insecurities right that may be true like they may may feel a type of way that you haven’t reached
Out but honestly you’re not reaching out to help you you’re reaching out because you realize they may want to help somebody else and you’re giving them the opportunity to do that you’re not reaching out because hey do me a favor real quick when you’re approaching fundraising don’t approach it like it’s
A favor cuz it’s not a favor it’s you’re giving the opportunity for somebody to be fulfilled to feel good you’re extending them the opportunity there’s so many ways people want to release there’s so many ways people want to feel or be better and giving is one of those ways volunteering is one of
Those ways quality time with people is one of those ways so you’re giving them access to some some a way that they can release so instead of thinking like oh my gosh they haven’t heard from me they haven’t heard from me you know why would
I reach out to them it’s been 10 years say hey it’s so great to see you I thought you might be interested in something that I’m working on and take it from there there’s nothing wrong with that if I were you and I was raising money from the very beginning I would be
Unashamed and I would say hey y’all I would go through my list through my roller de and I would write down every single person I remember from the jobs that I used to work and I would reach out and you can be genuine you can say
Hey it’s so great I haven’t heard from you in a long time it’s so great I want to talk to you and how’s your family doing hey another thing though I want to show you some things that are happening in this area or whatever you want to
Whatever you want to say but you need to have your spill ready and again you need to lead with the purpose of it all because people get motivated behind what purpose I’m going to give you an example give you an example and I’m actually going to do a reel on this so
And I reason why I haven’t done a real on this yet is because I want to research it a little bit more but how many of y’all saw it was like a I think it was either a Tik Tok or a real of a young woman who was walking down the
Street she was vlogging it was in DC and a homeless man came up behind her on camera and he asked for money I think for coffee did y’all see that and did you see that Ma I think I think think you you think you saw it so what happened
Was she ended up like she she taped herself like taking him in the coffee shop and getting him food and she talked to him and heard his story and all that kind of stuff they created a GoFundMe now I have not been paying attention to it but apparently this GoFundMe has raised over
Six figures right so let me remind you six figures when you know inflation is out of control we’re still in an economic downturn to some people people don’t have any money but this this fundraiser this GoFundMe raised six figures within days right so what I want to what I want to
Share with you is that people don’t necessarily they’re not going to necessarily get motivated by again you telling them hey I’m doing something new they get motivated by feel good stories they get motivated when they know that if they gave some money it’s going to go directly to help somebody else they saw
That man’s face they heard his story they saw the connection they felt something they felt some emotion and they moved and that’s the same exact approach I want you to think about you’re trying to get people energized around powerful stories with your nonprofit so I want yall to start
Thinking about creative ways you can get people people excited about what you’re doing Beyond just hey my organization is here but what are all the powerful ways you can reach out to people in your extended Network to get them excited because what you don’t realize is they’re more likely to respond to you
And give to you than a stranger off the street they’re more likely that when they hear from you and they see what you’re doing to respond and give to you than if it was just somebody on social media too many times people like oh I’m
Going to put out a GoFundMe I’m GNA put out a campaign and a lot of times these are people who have never heard of you people may come across you on social media and need time to figure out if you’re even legit but this the thing these people know you’re legit these
People know you’re not a scammer I mean I hope you’re not a scammer but these people know you these people know you’re not a scammer so they’re much more likely to respond and act and remember it’s never 100% of the people who respond to a campaign that give it’s
Never 100% so when somebody does not respond and when somebody doesn’t give do not take it personally keep moving because you’re gonna hear no a lot keep moving I it’s the same motivation I got to give myself keep moving right so let me recap what we talked about the missed
Opportunities have y’all tried any of these or have y’all like heard what I said and be like you know what i’ I’ve been holding back I’ve been holding back right Eric says we’re trying to hold off on fundraising until our registry goes to the state do we have to
Wait or can we start fundraising immediately I will wait especially in California I would wait they usually don’t take long though so but yeah wait um and for all those people who are watching that’s charitable registration more than like your state requires it in order to ask donors for money or to get
Grant funding from a foundation that is in that area so make sure you check the rules check the laws that is serious because they can charge fees and stuff like that if they find out that you’re asking for money before you apply so just keep that in mind all right um so
Let me recap really really quickly y’all and we have probably like three weeks left before I open the doors for activate your purpose and Prophet I had to switch the name up a little bit but it’s my membership Society where I want to encourage you that’s all I want to do
Because I know there’s nobody in your life telling you every day hey get up and get this you got this it’s so hard when there’s not somebody in your ear who’s been where you’ve been encouraging you so I want to create a space where we’re going to encourage each other but
I’m also going to give you tools and tactics along the way I’m so excited about it y’all I know I’ve been talking about it for a minute but it’s finally almost here and you’re going to hear me on the phone they’re going to be training opportunities all those things
That I’m excited about right so we’re going to recap and also um um oh thank you Josh for that comment oh Christopher said we’ve been holding back hey Christopher no more don’t hold back anymore don’t hold back anymore your nonprofit deserve so much more the people you’re going to help
Deserve so much more and I mean if Mason says it that’s true because Mason is a genius okay that boy is smart second grade you only in the second that’s not only you are a rising third grader you are a rising high schooler he’s in the fourth grade and
He’s nine who is Xavier oh well we’re not talking about Xavier okay so let’s recap real quick number one miss opportunities family and friends but really sell the story to your family and friends don’t just do it in passing and go deep with that look at his plushy go deep with
That ask number two is the clubs the associations and the groups in your area think about all the different groups people who congregate together for good think about sororities fraternities clubs business associations Chambers all of that kind of stuff and then your place of employment one thing
I didn’t say about your place of employment that came up on a coaching call that I did last week your places of employment also probably donate to nonprofits and they probably match donations to your nonprofit so don’t forget about that piece like they may W
Match one to one so you may get double your donation if you if you um donate from your place of employment or if a donor Works somewhere that matches one to one so those are opportunities also that you want to think about okay I’mma answer a couple questions because it
Looks like the internet is okay looks like the internet’s okay so I’m going answer just a couple more questions before we jump off and get something to eat um hey Sean oh y’all are so sweet God has a plan and purpose he absolutely does I’m grateful that his plan for me include oh
That is that is so sweet thank you shout out shout out to hey Juliana oh girl I owe you yes I owe a document so let me get on that um all right one question said is that the same as the 1023 no the 1023 is different from
Charitable registration the 1023 is the form you fill out and you submit to the IRS to get 501c3 status um and there’s an easy version of that if you’re not going to make over 50,000 for the first three years that you can use as well the charitable solicitation or registration
Is the state level and the 102 three is a federal level okay all right can I get just people to roll off in the chat I’m not holding back anymore I just want y’all to put I am not holding back I am not holding back I am not holding back
Repeat that repeat that I’m not holding back we’re not we’re not y’all so make sure that you have signed up for my activate your purpose Pro um prophet and kamik good question so I’m no longer um offering the coaching that I was offering before in the same way you’ll
You’ll be able to tap into coaching through the membership society and you can do it on a monthly basis okay don’t be afraid y’all to reach out to people even if you believe they’re going to say no or if you believe that they’re they’re not um for your mission you have
No idea you have no idea the people who want to bless you and support you and you holding back or thinking that you have to do this all on your own or holding on to this pride thing where it’s like oh no I have to say I did it I
Don’t want to ask for anything I hate asking for anything I hear people say that all the time you have to you’re supposed to this is what it is all right thank y’all so much for watching hey Gerald we are um going to be back live next week probably with the special
Guest we’re going to have some special guest in the next couple of weeks so stay tuned next Sunday and I’m going to be emailing y’all more information when the doors open y’all have an awesome awesome night and we’ll see you next Sunday bye bye I’ll be this I’ll be one
A special guest bye you gonna be a special guest yes all right bye
