Amen sometime we talk about the same historical figures she said you know we have folks right in our congregation whose family members have done great things or they are doing great things that are worthy of celebrating and this is a way for us to learn about each
Other so a few weeks ago amen we heard folks come up and share about family members and we found out we had Generals in their families y’all know we got a general he he’s on the Move we got a general not in the house today amen but
Uh we have a generals a part of our congregation amen and so we have folks who are serving in all various types of ways and so we put out the call for folks to be willing to share uh some important persons who are of history and
Note uh either in our church family or in their family and so sister Adrien Washington praise God she’s been put on assignment she was volent told hallelujah amen not by us amen but by somebody who loves her real well Amen to come and share about someone about of
Brown Chapel’s history that is of note amen thank you pastors good morning family this is the day the Lord hath made and we shall rejoice and be glad in it pastors I want to thank you for this because because when I was teaching Middle School my favorite time of the
Year was black history and women’s historyall because I would have my students do a a project highlighting somebody that was the first the best or the only and they could do any medium they wanted and those were the most fun times we had in school so we will start with our own Brown
Chapel family it says here for Black History Month it’s important to celebrate local black figures that changed history Charles Chief Eugene batty made history by being a first black principal in Michigan and he was a member of Brown Chapel although we have a long way to go before we reach
Equality it is important to recognize how far we’ve come in honor of Black History Month we are focusing a spotlight on a few local black people who have made an impact on society we’re starting with Chief Eugene batty from 1909 in 1998 the first black Public School
Principal in Michigan he was born in Asheville North Carolina he moved to Michigan with his sister after his parents’ death he graduated from Detroit Northeastern High School where he was a Star Trek and field athlete he broke many records and was one of the fastest men in his
Generation he even took part in the tryouts for the 1932 Olympics what but was rejected in a contested decision after graduating from Michigan State normal college now we know it as Eastern he became a teacher at iolani’s Harriet Street School which is now right up the street Perry school he became the
Principal in 1940 making him the only black Public School principal in Michigan he quickly became a leading figure in oban’s African-American community and the city he is most famous for his role in pioneering the Head Start program a committee came together to study the high drop out rate among black children
In racially divided areas in ipsan he also initiated the Perry preschool project in 1962 the project found a correlation between preschoolers attending a preschool program versus the control group and the measure the and the measure of success later in life this project was the formation of high scope
According to the study students that attended preschool scored higher on standardized intelligence tests while demonstrating higher Scholastic achievement the former preschool students also experienced lower rates of delinquency and incidents of criminal Behavior their rate of employment and college attendance was nearly double that of the control group after his
Findings the Eastern Michigan University inducted him into their athletic Hall of Fame in 1976 and the Michigan Education Hall of Fame in 1985 he spent his entire career working for the Iolani school district and retired in 1974 Eugene batty and next we would like to highlight a local historian
Author teacher Li Arian Mr AP Marshall Mr Marshall came to iilani in 1969 and in that time he taught Library science and served as the Director of emu’s Library as well as the dean of academic Services he was involved in ipsilanti Rotary Club Alpha fight Alpha fraternity the werun salani branch of the
NAACP and of course Brown Chapel while in IPS salani he began to research the city’s historic Afric africanamerican Community his pioneering work brought to life figures like Elijah McCoy and helped transform ipolani sense of itself Mr Marsha wrote many articles and several books about black history including unconquered Souls available at the ipolani
Library in the process uh in the process of his research he conducted dozens of interviews and collected hundreds of documents to access his papers you may go to the Iolani historical archives he died on March 9th 2001 at the age of 86 and these are some of the books that he
Wrote wrote and authored and you can get these copies at the library and now I would like to add my blackhat history fact because I have a famous person in my family and when we did it a couple of weeks ago I wasn’t ready to talk so I prepared this time
George T Sims Jr was the first black City police official in Chicago Illinois he was a world World War II vet but his claim to fame was that he was a Narcotics officer and he and his partner confiscated more than $3 million in Narcotics and arrested over 1,200 men

Blessed us and uh really get shared that some of his earliest moments of playing was encouraged right here at Brown Chapel so there’s just so much to be grateful for and what God is doing amen good soil helps seeds to grow Hallelujah and so Brown Chapel you are indeed great
Uh soil amen Let’s us prepare just to hear our scripture uh for a scripture for today just as far as a theme uh goes amen amen and it comes from John 15 1-8 uh and then uh 16 uh and 17 uh in in the hearing it’ll be 1 through eight
Then we’ll jump down to 16 and 17 that are uh in different translations hear now the word of God Jesus said I am the true grape vine and my father is the gardener he cuts off every branch of mine that does not produce fruit and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit
So they will produce even more you have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you remain in me and I will remain in you for a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine and you cannot be my fruitful my you not you cannot be
Fruitful unless you remain in me yes Jesus says I am the vine and you are the branches those who remain in me and I in them will produce much fruit for apart from me you can do nothing anyone again somebody said that apart from me you can do nothing anyone who does not
Remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and Withers such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned but if you remain in me and my words remain in you you may ask for anything you want and it will be granted verse 8
When you produce much fruit you are my true disciples this brings great glory to my father verse 16 in the Amplified Bible says this you have not chosen me but I have chosen you and I have appointed you and placed and purposefully planted you so that you
Would go and bear fruit and keep on bearing that your fruit will remain and be like lasting amen so that whatever you ask of the father in my name as my representative he may give to you verse 17 verse 17 in The Message Bible says but remember the root command somebody
Say the root command Ro remember the root command love one another the word of God for the people of God thanks be to God Just one thought to put in your mind that I was reading that it says that if you aren’t producing fruit you get cut guess what happen if you are
Producing fruit you get cut either way you’re going to get cut amen and sometimes we mistake being cut to produce more is being God forsaking us but really he’s just pruning you amen some of us are going through pruning Seasons right now and you’re wondering
Why is it so hard why is it so challenging God is just pruning you in this season so you can be more productive in the next amen amen amen praise God at this time we’re going to be blessed to have the the introduction of hallelujah our gen now
Speaker oh that’s the introduction then the choir amen amen hallelujah amen hallelujah well praise the Lord amen I am grateful for all of you all who answer God’s call uh you answered it when you woke up and came to church today amen but today we’re grateful for
You young adult who not only answered his call to come into his house today but to be his vessel uh so I’m grateful for the gift and privilege to present to most of you but maybe to introduce to some the anointed person that is akaya Ridley I’m going to read this piece of
Paper that she gave us but then I’m going to tell you uh how I see her in my heart aaya Ridley grew up in Albi in Michigan whoop whoop she attended Marshall High School in Marshall Michigan and received her Bachelor’s in history and sociology from albian college yeah that’s applaud worthy where
She was a part of a uh groundbreaking program that literally highlighted the gift and the richness in African-American students from the albian community called build Albi and fellows currently she’s a graduate student at em you with the Masters in the Masters of Science historic preservation and preservation
Studies program come on we right in her lane today she’s dedicating her life uh to preserving the story of her people amen it says zakai is currently serving as an oral history program associate for the University archives k has also served as the assistant director for Alban’s big
Read literacy program for the last two years akaya has been a member of lwis Chapel am Church in albian Michigan since she was young where she was involved in the ypd in the choir and in the lurgical dance ministry and now somebody say now now she is a proud
Member of the Brown Chapel am church family right here and actively engaged if y’all didn’t notice it was her voice reading them seven minute announcements amen so we praise God uh for knowing her story today uh and I just want to share with you all today a little bit more
Beyond what’s on that paper uh Kaa uh has a glorious heart she has a brilliant mind and she is full of God’s gifts uh we were blessed to witness her Supernatural capacity to absorb massive amounts of words and informations even at seven and 8 years old and then to
Kind of wield them and release them to make powerful impact aaya at seven and 8 years old for her Easter speech uh was reciting entire pages of literature uh and every time we gave her something more challenging she’d rise to it and then we’d have to dig deeper the next
Year and she’d rise to it and then we’ dig deeper and she’d just keep rising to it and we learn then how gifted she was at utilizing the power of word aaya also has a god-sized heart I often times see that it is big as Heaven uh and we see
That in good ways and in challenging ways because her heart is also yielded to a spirit of Excellence she she doesn’t do anything halfway she doesn’t settle for anything what you may not know about this scholar is that her grades have always been exceptional I mean straight A student all the way
Through the Journey all the way and we would have to calm her down when she did not get a 4.0 in some class we would have to pray her through because she has a heart of Excellence and she also has a huge heart so I want
To share with you Brown Chapel family to pray for this blessing because sometimes the enemy will take our hearts and he’ll manipulate it so that we pour out more than we should so we’ve had to Anchor her in her gifts and remind her that balance and wholeness and wellness are
Her portion so church family say we will pray pray for her and all the other young adults in this season amen amen she is good ground God has put in a miraculous seed in her and we cannot wait to see the full story of the fruit
In Jesus name amen amen I just want to add to that amen praise God that before co uh she was she was our kids babysitter amen and we didn’t know as brother Larry said that we were surrounded by greatness amen they was just hanging out playing can I play with
Your hair can we do this and that amen while she was knocking out straight A in college and other things and so we praise God for her and after the singing the hearing of this next Ministry song uh with the mass choir and you all are part of the mass worship experience

Ridley and I am coming here in front of you all to share a little bit about my testimony and how the Lord has placed me in the path that I am in today um so I would like to talk to you all about serving through building Community um so Community is very very
Important to me um we have especially I’m kind of surprised because I didn’t know that my mom and my grandma and my aunt were going to join us today so I had to shout them out um they have been a great large part of my life um
Everything that I have done I owe it all to the community in the village that raised me um the city of albian especially So currently I am a graduate student here at Eastern Michigan University and I recently moved to the ipsilanti area so this is not my home as
Well and um this month is Black History Month and as a black woman I come from two different under repesentative groups that have stories to share and like I said I come from albian which is where my story began and shape me into the person that I am today so I would like
To draw back from the reading of the scripture that we have um God says you didn’t choose me I chose you I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit so that the father will give you whatever you ask for exceedingly and abundantly all things um using my name this is my
Command love each other now growing up I have to give you a little bit of background I was surrounded by a community um V of various talents I was surrounded by my peers who played Sports and they were singing and they were dancing and so many other talents that um unfortunately
Although I tried to participate in I wasn’t the best person on I wasn’t the best person on the court or on the Dance Floor you know uh and people they let me know it um so it was it was discouraging at first um because I felt like I needed to
Be good at those things in order to have purpose and to be successful and um I kind of struggled in the beginning um like Reverend tiia was saying I was all into school uh I knew that even though outside of school I wasn’t doing too much besides being active in um
Community events and all that I still felt like because I wasn’t doing what everybody else was doing that I wasn’t like I wasn’t up there um and like I said it was discouraging at first but I had to sit down and talk to God and I
Asked him I said okay Lord what am I supposed to be doing um so even though I was feeling behind um the Lord told me he said well you you’re a talker and everybody who knows me knows that I am a talker uh I will talk your
Ears off and I will listen to you while you talk my ears off just because I love to talk to people and like they were saying I was reading scriptures and speeches that were three four pages long as a child and being able to pronounce words and read different lens of books
In school I it never occurred to me that that was a talent that was a skill um and even being able to speak in front of people not everybody does that and I am able to do that and I have been able to
Do that so I said Lord how can I use the talents that I do have to serve you and do the work that you want me to do so I knew that there was a part of me that wanted to continue to stand out not negatively but positively um and when I
Was on my college journey I toured lots of different universities and thought maybe I needed to you know leave albian right away and find myself at a larger space but then I realized I’m not that’s not me I like to make impact and I like to have a direct impact on the people
That I’m around and going to albian um college for a tour I realized that I instantly felt community and I know that might sound crazy because I’m from Al and it’s down the street but but it wasn’t it it felt like a new home for me
And I knew that the sense of community that I felt from the people that were a part of my tour and a part of my visits showed me that I could go there and do great work so we have been learning that to be a disciple is to be a a student
And we are given different opportunities to learn and to grow but also to share that information with others and I became very aware of this when I decided to direct my studies towards history growing up in Alan and I know we heard a members today talk about your community
And all of the rich history that has come out of people that you see every day people who are in your family um who you wouldn’t even know unless you sit down and talk to them and I learned that about my community as well uh The Great Migration uh brought black people from
The South to the north to work in our Industries and albian was one of those cities who received a lot of black families um they pushed for Education rights and um other social justice rights in the community and that was so that was so important to me because
These were people that I was seeing at church every day or or not every day every Sunday or in the grocery store or my Grandma’s friends and um just family members who I didn’t realize had such a rich impact on not only our community history but our overall overall National
History as well and I began to realize the important of black history in the community and how we would not even be where we are today if it wasn’t for our communities and our support um we have all learned about different historical figures who have had the opportunity to
Present to the masses and that’s I mean maybe one day that’ll be me too but so once I realized this I started to understand what God wanted my purpose to be to learn more about my people and to help them share their stories with everyone Hallelujah and of course
Even though all of my even though I had all of my studies and taking four classes at a time couldn’t I couldn’t sit still on campus I had about five or six campus jobs that I was doing in a week on top of like babysitting and
Going home and um everything else that I did but one thing that one of the jobs that specifically stuck out to me was I got the opportunity to be an academic mentor and tutor to a lot of students who were a part of underrepresented communities and um these kids they would
Tell me about the opportunities that they missed in their communities and that honestly they felt that they were missing from the community that we were a part of now and that really put pushed me to want to do something about it and there was a lot of things going on on
Our campus at that time but I tried to lend my voice and be a voice to those who aren’t comfortable talking and aren’t comfortable expressing themselves and myself and a group of my peers we were very strong minded and we we stood out and we stood up and we advocated for
Um our community of underrepresented on the campus so I was approached then after someone heard me speaking at a rally where we were advocating for changes in albian college for black students they heard me speaking and I was presented with the opportunity to help the Albin College archives build a black history exhibit
There was so many black alumni from the campus who have gone on to do great things um things that we haven’t heard about or that we will hear about and nobody really knew and these students on campus needed I felt that they needed to
Know that you can be here and you can be successful and here’s are here are examples of people who have went here and have gone through the things that we are going through even today um and I wanted to celebrate their Blackness and their success so I worked this led to
The creation of my first oral history project the beginning of belonging and where I explored the black history of albian college and even with the little knowledge that I had I understood that the impacts that students had on their campus and how their stories were going Untold this opportunity allowed for me
To connect with black alumni and also I was ultimately I was able to use oral history to help others share their stories with the public and by the grace of God as one person I was the only person um who worked on this project and I was able to help strengthen
Relationships not only with myself in the alumni but with the campus and the college in the black alumni um I began to be invited into spaces where my voice was being heard and where I could like I said represent my community in spaces that not a lot of other students were being invited
Into and so now as much as I’ve just talked about my relationship to my hometown you can imagine that I had no motivation to leave um growing up I was never the one that wanted to you know leave the comfort of my own home and my mom and my
Grandma they kind of baby me a little bit so I was definitely like okay after Al been I’m going to find something to do around here and you know and even after encouragement blessed them for Reverend Phillips and Reverend Tia they like no ma’am we got to get you from going
Home and so I was then presented with the opportunity to learn more about preserving history I had learned about Eastern Michigan’s historic preservation program um one of few in the state of Michigan at that and as I was presented with this opportunity I was like okay but that’s in ipsan that’s that’s kind
Of far from me so I don’t know what I’m going to do but um this was the opportunity to learn how to create compositor and build research for future Educators and future students um who want to know more history and I have also learned that the
Program was not as diverse um I’m the only uh black person in the program only person of color in the program now that I’ve been here and I took that as to mean that I needed to go learn how to do the basics of preservation but also to
Use those opportunities to bring those skills back to not only the community of albian but into the black community like we were saying earlier we all have such Rich history that’s sitting in our living rooms and to me I feel that we need to have this history somewhere and
Preserve it the right way that’s right and so even though I wasn’t familiar with Eastern or ipsan I talked to I sat down with my mom my grandma and I said said well what do y’all think if I go to Eastern and my mom had attended Eastern
Before and so she was all like oh my gosh I remember this I remember that and I’m like so what if I go and um I prayed about it and I asked the Lord I said oh well if I’m supposed to go there then you will make it happen
For me and I expressed my interest to the program director and I decided to apply and I was accepted like within weeks of applying and the director reached out to me personally and was like I’m so happy that you applied for this program we’ve been watching your
Work at albian and we were very interested in everything that you were doing and we hope that you can come to our program and help us do some of the same things and I got a little nervous I was like okay going back to being the
Only one um it was it was messing with my mind a little bit so I worked all summer and I began to save up to pay and um be able to go towards this next step in my life I didn’t know what I was going to do I didn’t know where I was
Going to live when I got here or I was going to support myself when being a student on campus but my grandma keep kept saying just pray about it and put it in God’s hands and um I have one of those grandmas who got scriptures all
Over the wall and the Bible and um different messages from the Lord and every day I would look go from my room to the kitchen I would read all of the scriptures and the Lord was just telling me like everything’s going to work out everything’s going to work out and so I
Ended up being able to find campus housing and um and then I was like okay so now I got somewhere to live what am I going to do when I get up there and after a summer of being patient I just happened to to receive a phone call one
Day from the program director and she said well they only give us a couple graduate assistantships a year but they offered us one more so if it if you want it it’s yours and a graduate assistantship is like your tuition is paid for and um on Tope of stiping that
That so I’m thinking I didn’t know what I was going to do for work I didn’t know how I was going to pay I know financial aid I was going to get some of that but she was like one thing is I don’t know what the job is it we’re in the geology
Departments or geography department so it could be anything and I was like that’s okay I’ll take it um even though I didn’t know what I was going to be getting myself into and so then the following week she called me back and said well we actually just got a
Scholarship from a group a group of people who are who are willing who are wanting to help en encourage diversity in our program so we also have a scholarship for you so on top of the graduate assistantship I also received scholarship money to help me pay for it
As well and so I was like okay Lord that mean I got to go so so I went to the orientation not knowing what I was going to be doing still and then I found out the oral I went up to the oral historian at the program and he said well going to
Be working with me and I’m like what so so this whole time I was stressed out about having to be in a science lab and I’m actually going to get hands-on experience working with the oral historian um after all of the work that I got to do at albian I realized that
Oral history and oral Traditions are a huge part of our black community um while we have different physical materials the best story stories come from us and what we say and what we listen to and so being able yes thank you God being able to get the opportunity to learn from a professional
And then like I said before being able to bring those skills back to my community I was very excited and um and often I would still get asked like even to this day well what are you going to do with a history degree or what jobs can you get as a
Preservationist and I didn’t know and I still don’t know but I knew I was going to find out um and and like in our scripture um verses 7-8 it says but if you remain in me and my words remain in you you may ask for anything you want
And it will be granted when you produce much fruit you are my true disciples I did this brings G great glory to my father I didn’t give up because I believe that the Lord will help me and he then started to show me well watch
This I’ll show you what you will do with those degrees and so as I am progressing in the program and will be graduating here in a couple months I [Applause] yes yes thank you I started to feel comfortable on Eastern’s campus and in ipsan coming here to Brown ch and being becoming a
Part of a new community and experiencing the love and support I feel like this is my home this is my this is my second home um I feel the sense of diversity everywhere and like I said before I am I’m the only black person in the program
So being able to find another home outside of that surrounded by my people and people who love me even though you might not know me or um know me well enough yet you still support me in every way and I knew that I had to make it a
Point to stand out and help my colleagues understand the importance of intangible Heritage so opportunities poured out for me I was asked to conduct oral history interviews with civil rights activists who were visiting Eastern Michigan and helped build community between our program and other departments on campus I was um invited
Back to speak at albian about serving the community through oral history and now currently I have been given the um opportunity to have my own project at Eastern Michigan where I’ll be documenting the impact that the Emu Gospel Choir had on the campus So yes I know I’ve been hearing so many stories about how the E the Eastern Michigan Gospel Choir has not only impacted the Campus Community but also the community of ipsan and Greater Detroit area so I am so excited to learn more and complete interviews with people
Who were involved and as I begin to speak with the members of the choir and learn more about the impact I realized why the Lord wanted me to come to this program he knew that my talents and skills that I didn’t even know were talents and skills could be used for
Good and to help my help me help my peers understand the importance of preserving black stories black stories shape our world and they deserve to be told it’s so amazing how black people can go into spaces and make those spaces their own and they came to new places
And they built their families up with villages and supporters who helped them raise their children and Chang laws and set new standards and I have a appreciation beyond words for the work that is being done so with that being said this is why I do what I do and what
I will continue and I don’t want to be the only one I want others to learn to that any community that you are a part of has a story to tell and I am so grateful to God for everything that he has done for me and every that he has
Put in my path helping me grow as the person I have became today and I would like to thank you all for having me and once again thank you for all of your love and support and yeah so thank [Applause] you [Applause] [Applause] Somebody say that’s good news good news can we stand to our feet all over the House you know UHA just shared so eloquently and profoundly the importance of history but also I’m we’re just blessed that her weaving in the rootedness of her Faith amen that she was able to know who to call on and to recognize who was calling on her
Yeah to know that she was chosen by God to do this in in time like this amen hallelujah hallelujah and so today just we want to take moment and thank God for that but to recognize that he is also making space to call all of us somebody say He’s Calling My Name
