Starting as far back as the early 1800s greek life has been an essential part of the college experience those who were never part of it know frats and sororities for their crazy parties hot jacks and dumb blondes and those who have had the chance to be a part of the greek community
Know frats and sororities for well there are crazy parties hot jacks and dumb blondes but despite these obvious college experiences being a part of a greek organization proves to be much more than getting drunk every night and failing out of school members of greek organizations participate in philanthropy events
They strive for academic excellence and they share a bond with their peers that changes each individual for the better so why are fraternities and sororities strictly known for their constant partying and academic ignorance are we the reason that these harsh stereotypes were built into our reputation or is there someone else to blame
Sorority girls most of all are catty [ __ ] they just party at drunk [ __ ] we just care about drinking it’s prostitutes uh rapists we love to drink man [ __ ] they don’t care about school any bad guy stereotype goes to a frat boy the typical stereotypes of like sorority girls being [ __ ] and
Fraternity boys being douchebags is basically done through movies movies have created the stereotype for fraternities and sororities these stereotypes form from many different forms of mass media television programs movies even the news the drinking hazing drug pushing and idiotic stereotypes of greek members have been continuously forming over the past few decades
Through their representation in both fictional and real life events movies such as animal house the house bunny and old school have ingrained these stereotypes into the minds of young adults who go to college expecting their wildest dreams to come true well i think stereotypes is the biggest factor that contributes to the
Lack of involvement for greek life because people just automatically assume that we’re bad people because of the movies it’s hard for people who are not in greek life to understand greek life and i think that is one of the most challenging pieces of greek life but then there’s the reality factor
Which is presented through the news and social media sororities and fraternities seem to constantly be dealing with major social issues such as hazing their new members throwing reckless parties and participating in acts of sexual assault and at times rape these are the stories that create a bad reputation for greek organizations
Across the country and although these events rarely occur the fear of the unknown is planted into the minds of college students and their families it’s very easy for organizations to be categorized by their stereotypes and it takes a lot of hard work to convince a campus that that’s not what
The what the culture is there’s two three girls out of 150 girls that like define that stereotype and once you see it you like see that one person you define all everyone under that stereotype i personally think that we are being victimized by faculty because once they see us wearing letters they’ll
Automatically like assume oh they like to drink oh they’re party animals oh they’re bad people uh well news flash faculty members news flash administration we’re not so i have a teacher’s assistant in a class and she wants to make a social change on campus which i think is great i’m all about it
Um however she herself does not like greek life i’m convinced because in the syllabus which she made she specifically said do not write about greek life this is not um for recruitment sorry guys like greek life gets enough attention on its own on campus it’s a judicial issue if it’s a conduct
Issue it’s taken based on what evidence we have and what we know about the organization on campus we don’t take it you know we’re not taking into account you know what was shown on animal house or you know what was on on tv or what another organization at another campus did do we
Bring those stereotypes into the the conversations to to educate the students on you know how they’re perceived yes is that something that we hold against them no we don’t hold stereotypes against them we encourage our organizations to break those stereotypes many college students expect to binge
Drink a bottle of jack daniels with john belushi or attend a de-virginizing aztec party with anna ferris or even get slapped with a paddle by will ferrell but how often have these types of experiences actually occurred although the answer may be higher than that of a normal college student
These rare events occur far less often than expected members of greek organizations are far too busy with planning charity events doing their school work and running their greek chapters in a professional manner we as a greek community have a higher gpa than the overall campus the average campus gpa is a
3.27 our greeks are at a 3.31 greek life you’re meeting all the time you’re constantly your weekends are booked with social events and philanthropy events and service events so how do we minimize these stereotypes is it even possible are these stereotypes too embedded into the greek life culture
We’re promoting ourselves i think it’s like that’s key like it’s as i said that one girl that’s a [ __ ] who sleeps with all the guys can stereotype that whole sorority with our whole greek life i think we can do the same the other positive light like with that one girl that does 150
Service hours she can define that whole sorority and yes it shouldn’t be that one person but if we get then two three people three people four people five people starting to do that we can start to change that stereotype i want everyone to know that greek members can be leaders and
We are good people sorry but building up the positives of the greek community is what’s going to change that culture it’s a home away from home so especially for me since i’m from guatemala it’s a place where i can come to and i know that people have my back
It’s a group of people that will always be there for you it also helps a lot of students focus on what they want to accomplish they get to meet students who have the same values as them the same ethics as them and they align with those organizations
Because of that it’s the best thing i’ve done while being at college you create bonds you create friendship um we do like other people have mentioned we do philanthropy we do so much more than like just stereotypical things and i think that it’s a great thing to be a part of
And i don’t understand why anyone would not be about it or have anything against it but we still like to have fun no i mean yeah we like have fun too but that’s not all
