New at five, we are hearing from the parents of a Virginia Commonwealth University student who died during a rush ceremony at an off campus fraternity. Yeah. Over the weekend, the University of Maryland officials suspended most Greek life activities while they investigate similar incidents.
And those parents say an investigation like this could have saved their son’s life. Our Melissa Kim is live with more of their conversation. Melissa, what did they share with you guys? Well, tonight, New tonight, a family from Sterling Virginia is in support. They say of the University of Maryland suspend
Indefinite suspension of fraternities and sororities because of investigation that university officials are conducting into what they’re calling the well being and safety of students. And this is something that is just too close to home for the Oaks family. Adam was a student at Virginia Commonwealth University when he died of
Alcohol poisoning during a rush ceremony at an off campus fraternity. Officials say no one checked on him despite showing clear signs of life threatening alcohol poisoning and needing medical help. Devastating for Adam’s dad, Eric when I hear things like that. I Yeah, it’s hard for me because Adam was such a good person.
You know, he, he never hurt anybody on Friday. The University of Maryland suspended 21 fraternities and 16 sororities indefinitely. In a letter sent to those organizations, university officials stated in part that they have reason to believe that multiple chapters have been conducting activities that threaten the safety and well
Being of members of the university community. Eric says an investigation like that at VCU might have saved his son’s life, be safe. You know, you, you, you have somebody’s life in, in the balance and it shouldn’t be like that. I mean, find other less risky things that you could be doing um
With one another. Um As far as pledging goes, in addition, the Office of Student Conduct and the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life place, the organizations on Social moratorium which prohibits any event where there is alcohol, something Eric supports as part of the school’s investigation,
We just want the kids to love one another and care for each other and you know, don’t harm each other. It’s ridiculous. The things that they’re doing, acting like making someone drink an entire bottle of whiskey is going to make you closer to brotherhood.
Adams’ family has now made educating kids about safety. It’s life’s mission. Just last Wednesday, the Senate voted unanimously to push a bill that would require high schools in the commonwealth to offer hazing prevention workshops to freshmen and sophomores. That bill is now headed to Governor Glenn
Yin’s desk tangible change that Eric says he’s doing in his son’s name. We kept in mind what would Adam? Adam would want? Instead of these guys sitting in a jail for 30 days, he would want them to go around and, and speak to other kids about the dangers of hazing. Mhm.
Now, the University of Maryland isn’t the Oregon only school in our area that’s investigating grief like Greek, like organizations last week. According to our affiliate in Charlottesville, the University of Virginia put a permanent or canceled rather all its new member
And social events after an alleged hazing incident where a student is now in a coma after drinking and falling down a flight of stairs. We’re in College Park tonight. Melissa Kim W USA nine. It’s just devastating to hear these accounts. Uh, something has to happen to change the culture here.
These are things that constantly need to be examined and then re examined as you get new students coming into school. Absolutely. Melissa. Thank you.
