E hey Stan congratulations on your retirement um we’ve been asked to answer a few questions but before I do that I just want to thank you um for taking a chance on me back in 1991 almost 33 years ago um someone Small Town Iowa who had very little Sports Experience but
You saw something in me that I’m not even sure I saw something in myself at that point so again thank you for that um congratulations that was Ruby Stan congratulations on your retirement I am grateful and blessed that you are in my life uh thank you so much for your leadership and guidance
Ever since I was a young man at CMU enjoy your retirement sir well done hey Stan sorry I couldn’t make it to the retirement ceremony but I trust to be a good one want to congratulate you on the next steps of your journey and hopefully
Still continue to be able to play a part in those um one word to describe you which is impossible I know you hear a lot but I’m just going to say the word great obviously great with so many things but I’m going to turn it a little
Bit different and it’s great and how you make others feel be able to talk to them when you communicate with them you make them feel at home comfortable and as great as you are as a communicator you’re probably a better listener so I would say great all around on that gosh Pioneer
Um I met Stan I think for the first time in 2000 I was in Providence Rhode Island my very first nurseing conference I was uh looking for a graduate assistantship and I can’t remember who was um they grabbed me and said you got to be stand man shingles from Central
Michigan and the time uh Damon Brown was still working there some others so uh that’s where I met the very first time with in probidence roadland and his um impact on me as a professional and as a student um started in that very moment generous the first word that comes to
Mind for me when I think of Stan is Mentor he’s provided mentorship to so many students but also to grad assistant and young professionals um and that was me many moons ago uh when I came to uh to CMU um I added a new Mentor in
Stan uh this two words but the man and it’s it’s how he owns the room it’s how he makes relationships um stand’s not just a person it’s almost a brand when you say stand everybody has words that come to mind leader passionate social um just you think of so many different words but
That’s just who he is you can’t put it in just one and mean so many different things to so many different people uh but just the man that’s just the guy that’s been at the core of our association for a long long time um and that’s a big footprint and I don’t know
If there’ll be anyone like that again the first word I think when I think of St and one of the first words I think of is Legacy um some other words are Chicago and G’s popcorn because he always brought that good stuff back whenever he went to Chicago um the word
That comes to mind when I think of Stan shingles is inspiring a favorite memory or moment of working with Stan I think probably would be the special Olympic summer games um he kind of took me under his wing there gave me my first introduction to special o um which was uh a life-changing
Experience experience for me it’s just so many of them uh I’ve got to say it includes from the first time that I ever met you and you know you were just a welcoming soul and uh you know always uh there for me to I think extending that
Same sentiment to my family uh every time that we would come out and visit you it always felt like your house was a second home for us uh and you know I just always appreciated I think those times with you uh the most uh I think we were in New
Orleans for ersl and uh we were uh I I don’t remember the the real name of it but it was a great time for ersl and the the place we I think we’ve jokingly called The Raid Boom Boom Room I’m not sure if that was really the name of
Place I can’t remember but U just moments like that like those um offthe cuff moments where we end up having breakfast some where or dinner somewhere just hanging out and everybody can be themselves you know um those are some of the most memorable times for me in the
Association um and those those moments you know you develop some friendships some lifelong friendships and things you get you know memories you get to share like remember that time we were in in Boston and we ended up you know um at this restaurant or in Louisville Kentucky or New Orleans so uh those
Memories are what helps to you know add to these these relationships and these friendship and so uh but I’m almost certain it was I know we jokingly call it race boom boom but I’m not sure if that likly the real name of it though great times one of my favorite memories
Working with Stan um has to be on my last day working with Team Ure I went into his office just to do some one-on-one last you know saying goodbyes and he started singing the national Canadian anthem for me on my last day and had it recorded it was an awesome
Funny great memory that I’ll always cherish I think he knew more words to the national anthem than I did so one of my favorite memories or moments working with Stan was when I was a student and I was telling a bunch of other students who were afraid and intimidated by Stan
I was like it’s just Stan he’s just another human like we are like what’s the big deal and you know I remember doing that but I didn’t think it was a big deal until years later Stan told me that he knew that I I did that and um
And that it actually meant a lot to him that I was willing to challenge the other students to just see him as another person and um and so it turned into one of my favorite memories because that that’s authentically who I am and I was trying to authentically see him as
Who he was and and it’s led to me really valuing that moment and and also really appreciating what it meant to him I have to say um when Stan was on the board and I was on the member Network we got a chance to really connect uh on a lot of
Different things it was at a kind of a really cool time in nura um you know I’d known Stan for years um got to work with them a little bit when I was a state director but as the the member network uh work really transpired I think that’s
Probably uh my experience in working with them uh memory I remember playing intermal basketball on your intermal basketball team uh uh with clarky and some of the guys so that was always a great experience and look finally on those memories um something I try to emulate from you is your service
Involvement across campus but more importantly in the community you live in so I still try to do that today and that was um something I learned from you as well as me Mentor students that we work with that’s what it all about the beginning of my story connects
To Stan um I met him when he came to August St up for the Illinois State workshop and then met him again at leadon um was part of a presentation where he called three people up to share what they’ve learned um and it’s it in a nutshell it’s not
Much but you look back at it now 20 years later and you’re like wow that was the start of a relationship and how it was just a simple oneoff part of a presentation not a big deal but it’s the core of how we met and it’s part of our
Kind of our origin story and it’s a reminder to me how valuable those small things are now and how impactful they can be and how like every new interaction with a person could be the starting of something bigger down the road and you just never know um so it’s
Something about Taking Chances with people uh getting to connect with people um and just planting those seeds early and you never know what’s going to happen and um he’s one of those people since the beginning one of the first people like true nursea people that I met and and to
Still know him today and clue is pretty awesome my favorite moment working with Stan shingles is when I was an undergrad student at CMU I worked at the access points in the Student Activity Center and he would walk by the East service center every day and I would admit him
Into the facility and when he walked by I would always tell him stand when I grow up I want to be just like you and he would stop and pause and say no you can be better than me his words prompted me to feel hopeful encouraged and
Empowered to do great things in my life um my funniest moment with you I would have to say when we were in Florida and I learned that you had an addiction to Crispy Cream Donuts uh so much so that you and I went and we each
Got one and then I found out later in the evening that you had went back through the drive-thru and got a whole dozen for yourself and tried to hide them from me uh so you know I have to say that that is probably right up there
At the top of the funniest uh moments that I had turning on the hotel light and you were trying to keep it dark in the room because you didn’t want me to see the evidence uh so that one certainly stands out to me uh one of my
Favorite funny stories with Stan and I’m not even sure he knows all of this um but I was going to be um standing for the national student rep position and I needed to practice my speech and he was willing to help me and um so he said he
Was going to call me at some point like this one night and so I had my speech with me in my truck just in case he called and I was meeting somebody to to go snowboarding at the top of mass nuton mountain in Virginia
And he called and so I sat in my truck for an hour practicing my speech over and over not wanting to have the truck on because of course that would waste money in gas and um he really helped me and I gave a great speech but the funny
Part of it is that my toes my fingers and my nose were freezing because it was Winter and I didn’t care because s was giving me his time and I got practice and I feel like that just kind of symbolizes like our relationship we are willing to be cold or be uncomfortable
To um to create time and space for each other um no matter what and I’ll never forget that and I always value the time and effort he he gave me to prepare me for that opportunity well you know my favorite some of my favorite times with
Stan are with uh are a group in nura that we call the sweepers and this group uh started as uh folks that were walking in the mark Fletcher fundr run as part of the nursea foundation and it kind of organically grew over time and uh it has been really
Funny because now we will do some sort of sweepers event at the annual conference a lot of times it is uh uh something in the expo hall because we haven’t had to funr run for a while but one of the things that we do is is when
We were having a fun run it was it was awesome because we would uh pretend like we were in a golf cart to finish the Fun Run or hail a cab or just do silly stuff that and then then we would get the pictures and send them out so you look
Back when those memories come up uh you just really laugh because it’s now it’s a group of about 12 13 of us uh but really it was Stan myself Greg Jordan Eric nickel that kind of started this uh uh this thing and it organically grew over time well every time we’ve been
Fortunate that in our group we’ve had honor award recipients and and uh we would carry the hon award recipient over the finish line so there’s a picture in Vegas of us carrying Tom Kirch over the finish line and Paris is behind us and everything but when Stan was the honor
Award recipient we were like you know Stan’s a big guy we’re gonna how we gonna carry him over the uh finish line so we we got a little three uh two wheel push Dolly card and we did that in the expo hall one day so that was you know
Real fun and all those things with the creepers are stuffed that I’ll cherish forever it was April of 2016 I believe that was Stan’s year that he was the president of nura we were hosting the National Basketball Championships at Ohio State and I served as one of the
Directors of the tournament Stan comes to Ohio State comes into the facility and he’s looking for my family my oldest daughter Ruby r u y she was just born a month earlier than the tournament so he comes in and he says Dex where’s Kelly
Is she going to bring the baby up I said yes uh they’ll be up here tomorrow he said okay I’m looking forward to meeting Lucy so I looked at him strangely and you know just thought about the name that he just gave my baby and but I did
Not have the courage to correct him I respected him that much the next day happens and he says hey I’m looking forward to to for Kelly to bring Lucy up and I finally said so I said hey man my baby is not named Lucy her name is Ruby
R u y he said good cuz I was wondering the entire time why would you name that baby Lucy needless to say he still calls her Lucy today I appreciate you bro funny memory about stanner uh uh something funny experience so I think in the five
Years I worked um at CMU withstand the fun memories I’ve always had where him always teasing me about being a bronco and how he was doing the Lord’s work and you know giving the best charity by allowing a Bronco to work at CMU I I thought it was always funny I’m sure my
Old director you know found her old Chuckles about it as well but yeah thanks Dan for for helping demand hire me and doing the Lord’s charity work life um a funny or memorable story um the word stand versation um so uh I think that I trademark that uh you know
That word from uh talking to some co-workers and saying hey listen um you know Stan is a great guy to talk to but do not go to his office and talk to him on your way home um don’t go there you know with your work bag packed up and
Your jacket on thinking it’s just going to be a quick goodbye because then next thing you know it’s an hour later and you’re there hearing stories about officiating or this person that he knows from then and I can just picture Stan um just kind of pulling memories from here
As I’m thinking like man I’m going to be late for dinner um you know but uh but honestly I I wish I could have a couple more of those conversations in Stan’s office um you know but maybe not on an empty stomach um a memorable
Story um I don’t know if I have anything funny but I remember rooming with you at a few conferences and I’ve always been amazed at uh how you pack so many clothes in your suitcase um and more even more so all the shoes you take you
Always had a strong shoe game so don’t ever lose that um uh the ways that you’ve made a positive impact on Collegiate Recreation you know there’s a saying about each one reach one uh Each one teach one uh you’ve reached and taught plenty um you know there’s so
Many people that I have uh met along the way that I find out experienced you the same way that I did uh or in some cases uh they were either students or faculty or staff at Central Michigan and you know they came upon you and you really
Kind of envelop them you know with again this real sense of inclusion uh and belonging that I think really lend meeing to those words when we talk about them and you’ve certainly taught uh me that and has certainly I think made an impact in that way on our profession and on our
Field uh as far as um in what ways has Stan made has Stan made an impact on Collegiate Recreation Stan’s Mr nura um you know he mentored so many people not just at CMU but within our field you know and um and I think uh the positive
Impact in helping to put uh uh CMU even more on the map and taking the torch from Dr Jones and just to pass it on to uh to demand and to JB and to so many you know other young professionals um you know stay uh you know really gave
Mentorship to people across the country um so um positive impact I think stands numbers and the students and professionals that he influenced speak for themselves you walk into the Hall of Fame room and I haven’t been there in about seven years but I would imagine they installed another wall into that
Space because of how many students that he’s influenced and will continue to influence influence you know whether it be from his time on the nurse board or just being you know his commitment and dedication to the you championship series uh Stan was a an official just like many of us were
Uh I heard him actually talk last night about being a uh what basketball official and U the travel and some of the people he met like so his influence is just like many of us like you know so his influence stretches far and wide you know uh just his willingness to pour
Back into students and I’ve watched him here even here this week at Leon the last couple days here at Leon and it’s interaction with the students that you all brought here and to watch that and see that actually re-energized me and and knowing that uh he’s
Retiring in about a month or so here uh we will be at a loss in terms of profession um and there will be a void uh but he that void will be filled through all those folks that he has empowered to move forward there’s many
Of us that has St has carried a lot of us um in the profession on his shoulders he’s paved the way for a lot of us to have opportunities and access to um jobs and and an opportunity to have a seat at the table and so um it’s
Because like I said I start off by sending the pirer blaz a trail for me the positive impact he’s had on Campus Recreation and Collegiate Recreation um he he has this ability to see how things connect this thing over here he finds the connection over here and then ultimately it bands and creates
Opportunities and it’s just incredible and I really value that about him and it’s made such an impact on our field um he asks the hard questions and he has the uncomfortable conversations he’s willing to do that when others won’t and um and that has allowed for our field
And our association to really grow or to take a hard look in the mirror and I’ve appreciated that and it’s been a big impact and and the way I kind of capture all that is I see understands like his historical and institutional knowledge it it’s like this massive growth because
Of you take the man who he is combined with the amount of time that he has and it creates compound it’s like compound interests and the longer he was around the more his value and impact and influence grew and it is irreplaceable there are many ways in which Stan shingles has impacted the
Field of Collegiate Recreation to name a few he mentors many different people within the field including professionals and students alike he is a very active participant within the field and within our association nursa attending conferences presenting volunteering and serving in various capacities he also has prepared many different people for successful careers
Within the field of colleg of recreation and finally he has helped many different programs and departments grow through Consulting ultimately I believe that the way that he has carried himself is the model in which many people will emulate thank you Stan we appreciate you there’s not a room that he walks
Into where he’s not the and um he’s had so many touch points with different levels of our association um whether it’s the board or uh the championship series or the region just having opinions on things providing guidance and Leadership and thinking two steps ahead um he’s just a voice that
People trust and it’s a steady voice it’s never An Extremely Loud or aggressive voice it’s always here and in my time knowing him I’ve never seen like it raised to be angry or overly passionate it’s going to be steady it’s going to be calculated and it’s going to be meaningful
Um and that has helped moved our association forward you have a voice of reason you have a voice of logic uh and you have a voice that’s passionate about doing what’s best for our association and well just think about it I mean he’s a a nurse at past president he’s an
Honor award recipient he’s served on uh the member Network the foundation um he’s done everything there is to do in our field and done it with grace and elegance he’s just uh really the epitome of what you like for in terms of a Collegiate Recreation professional um how has the stand
Leadership and guidance influenced me professionally I think the one thing that Stan influenced is just about creating community and how important it is to bring people together and find joy and fun in work because really at the end of the day that’s how we motivate students is through joy and fun and
Finding the importance of what uh the important work that we did s’s leadership and gu guidance has influenced my personal and professional development in so many ways he literally opened the door for me I was interviewing for a scholarship that he was on the panel and I left the room and
He followed me opened that door and he asked to meet with me gave me his card and um that led to a conversation that literally changed my life and opened my eyes and my heart to some things I was pretty passionate about and I really wanted to do and opportunities that I
Didn’t know existed he also by being him somebody who honors and values relationships he gave me permission to do that too he gave me permission to honor that part of me that I don’t think I necessarily knew was so important to me and uh and it it’s really helped me
Be me and help with my personal development and just seeing humans as humans and loving people for who they are and leaning into those relationships and creating space and valuing them I’m so grateful for that and for him teaching me that Stan shingles has been serving as a
Mentor for me throughout my entire career he has taught me a lot about professionalism leadership and service however the things that I value most about Stan aren’t what he tells me it’s basically what he does he has served at the highest levels of our beloved Association nursa he has worked
Hard throughout his career to rise to the ranks of a senior officer at CMU and he shows up to the things that matters the most including conferences like ersl and student lead on lastly he cares for me as if I am his son I appreciate you Stan
Uh it’s great to be able to see people that have achieved so much and aspire to do great things that can influence you this st’s been kind of like that influence for me I’ve I would like to say I’ve watched it from afar but I’ve been able to have an
Opportunity to be up and close and up close with him and watch him and just the way he carries himself uh the it gives you a vote of confidence in yourself without even knowing it right uh sometimes it’s through the questions he ask you sometimes it’s
Through uh what may seem like a question but it’s actually a statement it’s a directive you know uh and just the the the feedback and the input that he provides you know and so but being able to watch him and how he moves how he operates has been um everyone since you
Know so you can be a mentor to someone and it doesn’t have to have a formal title on it and so I think Stan’s been a mentor to lots of people including myself um um in ways that which he’s influenced in ways probably which he will never know um and
So when you talk about longevity in the field and uh the Great accomplishments and so part of his legacy and his accomplishments uh have more to do with other people and the number of people that he has supported and people that he Uh help develop professionally you know a lot of them there at Central Michigan a lot of them never been on the campus of Central Michigan never been to Pleasant you know so um so when you look at that that’s kind of the I’ve taken that and like you know you can reach
People in many ways so that’s something I’ve admired about him oh wow I mean Stan’s a guy um he’s a go-to guy right so if you have an issue or you’re dealing with something there’s a really good chance that he has dealt with something similar uh has uh and he’s
Just a really good person to bounce ideas off of give advice so uh you know you model a lot of what you do after after guys like him in terms of just the way he carries himself uh how he uh responds to different situations so I’ve
Learned so much from that guy over there closing Stan um first of off just want to say thank you thank you so much for all that you did for me personally all that you’ve done for me professionally um you know for being a really good friend um for being someone that I can
Talk to about uh celebrations and challenges in my professional um and in my personal life you know and uh and just thank you for uh for being a good man for me to um be able to model myself after um and I wish you nothing but the
Best of luck I hope that you don’t drive Renee too crazy and I can’t wait to uh to stay more in touch and see what’s next for you good luck Stan thank you again thank you um great grateful for you grateful for your service um this Association is going to have a stand
Sized hole in it for a long period of time um but just like when a rock hits the water there’s going to be ripples um your ripples are going to last for Generations in the association so um the presence and the impact you’ve had on so
Many people will be felt long after your retirement um congratulations uh I hope you find time to relax um and hang out with those grand babies um and and really just celebrate everything you’ve done because the rest of us want to celebrate for you so thank you job well done and welld
Deserved retirement and it’s just the next chapter and we all look forward to um seeing what’s next for him and Renee in retirement and wish him nothing but the best and I know he’s going to continue to uh I always look forward to seeing his post about where he’s
Traveled next like where in the world is stand now so I’ll definitely be looking down and see where in the world is standing Renee wish you the best my friend words of appreciation or well wishes uh well now that you’re retired you have all the time in the world so
All those times that you you know stop and you find yourself talking to somebody when you’re on your way somewhere you got to know where to be so you can you know talk as much as you’d like to and take how much time you want to uh with no deadlines or things like
That and I certainly encourage you to take advantage of that but no on a serious tip man I you know I I I’m sure I’m going to see you uh in short order I just wish that I could have been able to see you uh on this day as well because I
Always and always will continue to treasure every moment that I get to spend uh with you uh is you know another moment for me to grow and for me to learn uh but you know have fun at this party and you know certainly have fun in your retirement and you know don’t
Forget about us folks that you know are still here working so love you man and congratulations um and just words of appreciation I just want to say Stan thanks for everything that you did you really brought me into the fold as an outsider as a Bronco into the CMU
Community I’m forever grateful um and just really cherish my time that I had as a young professional at CMU I learned a lot of tough good lessons about how to influence others and how to have impact so thank you for all that you’ve done all that you will continue to do in
Retirement it’s definitely um something that you you deserve you worked so hard and spent so many hours so thanks again for everything you’ve done and fire up chips the last thing I have words of appreciation or well wishes for Stan is um is that I want you to know
That you literally changed lives you literally um gave me hope when I didn’t always have it or when I didn’t know I needed it and um I I love how much you honor your relationships your connections and your love for people and for humans and so my my well wish to you
Is I truly hope you get e to do those things even more with Renee Lamar Corey Jaden rehea and all your other loved ones I hope you get even more time with them and even more time to do the things that really fill your cup and that’d be
Good for everybody else too love you Stan yeah just in closing just a congratulations to you and Renee on your next chapter um I know your Chicago Bears need a lot of help so maybe you can reach out to them again congrats St thank you for all and as always fire up
Chips fire up chips hey Stan congratul ulations on your retirement um we’ve been asked to answer a few questions but before I do that I just want to thank you um for taking a chance on me back in 1991 almost 33 years ago um someone Small Town Iowa who had very little wreck
Sports Experience but you saw something in me that I’m not even sure I saw something in myself at that point so again thank you for that um congratulations that was Ruby stand congratulations on your retirement I am grateful and blessed that you are in my life uh thank you so
Much for your leadership and guidance ever since I was a young man at CMU enjoy your retirement sir well done hey Stan sorry I couldn’t make it to the retirement ceremony but I trust to be a good one want to congratulate you on the next steps of your journey and hopefully
Still continue to be able to play a part in those um one word to describe you which is impossible I know you hear a lot but I’m just going to say the word great obviously great with so many things but I’m going to turn it a little
Bit different and it’s great and how you make others feel when you talk to them when you communicate with them you make them feel at home comfortable and as great as you are as a communicator you’re probably a better listener so I would say great all around on that gosh Pioneer

Will have much time after the ceremony to speak with you so I just ask kindly for those who are in line if you all want to take your seats and then you can speak to Mr shingles after the event that’ll be greatly appreciated so we can get started Mr shingles
Sters always going we know that that’s a big time throw and a big time catch by Antonio Brown Dan took that where only Antonio could catch it over the head of the corner in front of the safy just reached up and just snatched it with one hand never used the other
Hand to bring that ball in that was simply the will of Dan he got stood up by Austin with help from his teammates but just driving was able to get his shoulders to theine fell into the end put six points on the board for the Triple all right ladies and gentlemen
We’re gonna officially kick off the program so welcome to everyone to today’s celebration for Mr Stan shingles at one of our one of his favorite places on campus the Student Activity Center um for those who are watching virtually we welcome you as well today uh for those
Who don’t know me my name is Lester Booker Jr and I’m the host for today’s afternoon station conversation um before we begin today’s event um I want everybody to stand up besides our Honore and his wife and I want everybody to show Stan shingle some
Love so I want everybody to give him a round of applause and his lovely wife for 34 years of dedicated service at Central Michigan University we we appreciate you so much for all that you’ve done your impact um today’s program will be filled with highlights from Stan’s 34e career
Here at this spine institution and truly I am so honored to be here to celebrate my mentor my advisor my friend I personally want to thank you for all the impact that You’ had in my life and so many others that are in this room and that are watching virtually and we’ll
See later on social media I personally respect and honor the man that you are and the Legacy that you’ve left at this University and will continue to leave right so as we move next to the program to provide a thank you from the University I’d like to invite up
University president Dr Davies and vice president of advancement Jen CER micone pred I guess the thing is where do you start uh with stand but let me first start with Lester first I love the jacket that’s pretty styling but Lester tried to do The Impossible about five minutes
Ago he tried to stop some Stan for pretty impressive but the job well done but we are here uh tonight this afternoon to honor uh stand as well as Renee I don’t think you can mention either one without the other what an amazing power couple with amazing group
Of individuals that come together and support our students in absolutely amazing ways and through every action that they T so again thank you for all that you do for Central thank you for all that you do for our students and just looking around and seeing all the indiv idual that have
Come out today to to honor Stan and again and Renee again they’re one one one and in each other I see some faces that I have not seen in a long time uh some that I wish I didn’t see Sean Tony uh but nevertheless onas U but again
It’s just an amazing feed now Stan started at Central Michigan University in 1989 we was the assistant director of interal Sports and he truly made an impact there but kept on receiving additional duties and additional responsibilities and being elevated because of his leadership skills his ability to communicate and connect with
Individuals from all walks of life uh and to always be honest and forthright and serve students from that and serve faculty and serve staff from that element uh the building that we’re in right now uh really came to life because of what Stan put into it absolutely just amazing and
Is retiring now as an assistant vice president uh and the Legacy that it leaves throughout student affairs and throughout the institution when I first met Stan um I was in awe I was in awe with the history I was in awe with the commitment that he had and always
Exhibited uh we do have a couple connections which I always thought was interesting that we going to share a little bit uh as you both know as you know both of us did not graduate from this SP institution uh but we have such a big love for it uh we have deep love
For it because of our work and our profession but also it educated our our our children and that’s something that’s near and dear to our efforts then I also have to say that Stan and I Stan and I shared another uh passion another uh thrill that we did outside of the work
Area for Stan you probably would say oh that makes a lot of sense for me you’re going like I don’t think so we were both basketball officials at the Collegiate level and so we compared notes all the time about how to deal with angry coaches and angry everyone’s yelling at
Us and I thought myself you know I get to do that every day still he doesn’t get the people yelling at me I University of Resident I get that so what the heck but again Stan in his legacy of service uh tens of thousands of students uh that came through this facility that
Participated with st uh to the thousands of students that he and Renee HST uh posted at their house for the barbecue the Chicago barbecue the famous Chicago uh from the hundreds of of individuals that probably on an annual basis uh that took Stan aside and Stan spent time with
Them to make sure that they they felt heard that they were seen and that their issues were addressed uh he would never turn away a student and has always been something along those lines and then also through all of his work mentoring staff members that as they had come to
Central Mich University to teach them and to Mentor them and to instill that sense of student uh centeredness that that that c is so known for as you all may know we have a new mission statement and it starts off that c defined by the success of our
Students you can put STS Rene name right next that commitment because that’s what they stand for the success of our students and continue to be with fort on again and again stand lives our core values compassion excellence social justice working hard for others that self selflessness and again that’s something
That we’re so grateful for that that you have today is a a great day but it’s also a sad day your legacy is going to last but we also want you to continue to Grace our University your legacy will live long but we hope to see you and
Renee continue to be around and to engage with all of our students with our faculty and our staff and all the alone night you are Central Michigan University thank you very much and fire up to you good afternoon everyone I’m Jennifer CER and I’m the vice president uh for
Advancement here at Central Michigan University and I’m here on behalf of not only advancement but those students that uh Stan has mentored over the years that become our well-loved alumni I am here to represent um Marcy adaman whose Stan has worked very closely with over multiple many many
Years and Britney milin who he’s also had the opportunity to work with on many Affinity chapters here at the University as Stan will tell you and some of you may be surprised by this Stan is not a graduate of Central Michigan University but he is most certainly now an alumnist in 2018 Stan
And Renee shingles received our honorary alumni award from Central Michigan University the Alumni Association awards committee cited their commitment to CMU students alumni and their work to create and maintain a strong connection and networks as one of the many reasons why they were selected to be our honorary
Alumni Stan is and has been and continues to be very instrumental in spearheading the annual black alumni homecoming weekend and if you have not visited their tent I highly recommend it it is a lot of fun he is dedicated to these weekends in the events that led to the alumni group forming and
Re-engaging the CMU black alum alumni chapter his steady support and willingness of our campus and point person has helped launch the first black alumni alumni weekend homecoming weekend I’m sorry and that took place in 2019 and we only continue to see that grow Stan thank you for your dedication in
That as you know Stan you know there is mental network of people in his connections to campus and in the Mount Pleasant community and Beyond I don’t think that there’s a spot that I know that I’ve traveled that someone says do you know Stan do you know Renee
Absolutely we do we are grateful for all that Stan has done and how he keeps us connected to his Network as we look forward to him continuing to work with us as an alumni and yes now a volunteer Stan fulltime volunteer best wishes to you and Renee
Your next journey I hope is filled with lots of love laughter and lots of time spent with your grandchildren we hope to see you on campus we will miss you daily but we always know that the both of you will be forever fired up thank you for everything than thank
You thank you Jen and Dr Davies for those kind words one of Stan’s favorite quotes Services the price you pay for the space you occupy Dr Dennis Kimbro to share more words about Stan’s commitment to service i’ like to invite Dr lumbert faculty with physical education and
Sports as well as a philanthropist the the founder of the good prize to share some words you coaching coach greetings in my life I’ve had no better friend and no better colleague than stand shingles I consider him to be a great man but what makes a person
Great there’s a quote by Dr Martin Luther King Jr that says everybody can be great because anybody can serve it is his service that I believe makes Stan a great man now there are a lot of people in the room who serve today and you know this to be true
There are different levels to this to this service thing and Stan is just at a different level anybody who knows Stan knows that you know he’s level of service is a little different he’s a different kind of servant his service game is like LeBron James he served the university he served
The community and he served as professional organizations consistently ly and at the highest levels since arriving in this community almost 34 years ago we would literally be here for hours if I went through just half of the service that this man has provided it might feel a little bit like a
Station throughout the years I’ve watched this man provide service that was of biblical proportions and this I know to be true if you are hungry he will give you something to eat somebody talked about the Chicago picnic for those of you who know you know if you thirsty he would
Give you something to drink he’s famous for his punch but he’ll never give you the recipe if you are a stranger he will invite you in and as the people that have stayed at his house just because they were visitors in town and if you’re in need of of clothing
Well Mr Brown he’ll take you shopping to multiple multiple stores for hours but he always makes sure that he gets something for his beloved wife and rarely for himself so again let’s not get it twisted there levels to the service thing and in 198 in 1989 Central Michigan University made the wise
Decision to hire a great man in my life I’ve had no better friend and no better colleague than Stan shingles I wish you the best I wish we’d met in the 80s and I wish you the best in retirement thank you thank you Dr [Applause] mufford so Stan has held many roles with
Our students here on campus as we’ve heard um and one we celebrate and thank him that for today for the VY of all of our students and ensuring that their voices are heard and one thing that he does love he loves the price Central choir and this wouldn’t be the proper
Celebration without them so I know some members of them are in the back so I’d like to turn over at this time to the chice central choir okay um my name is Lauren I’m the president of Christ Central choir we just wanted to congratulate you and thank you so much for everything you’ve
Done for not only our organization but other organizations on campus um you have opened many doors for us that we didn’t think was possible so we thank you so much Glor my heart Slyly you are everything I need you to be you are The Great I Am You how I love you I for you are in all of your glory my heart SS holy Holy you are everything I need you to be you are the great I I love you how I love you I for you are in all of your glory my heart sings Holy Holy you are everything I need you to be you are The Great I Am you are everything I need you to be you are the [Applause] great all right let’s give it up for Christ Kingdom Christ Central chire I apologize all right so the definition of Brotherhood is an association Society or community
Of people linked together in a common interest or trade and Stan is a brother to many so to salute Stan for being an outstanding brother I’d like to welcome Mr Damon Brown to the stage who’s the vice president of student affairs and chief diversity officer at Elma College
He can join me over here in the coaching section and a fellow member of Leota sh chai Lambda chapter Alpha 5 Alpha Incorporated what did you just say I get it you say got it wrong but I said it okay don’t don’t my notes sorry we going to work on your notes
Here I was wondering why you was address up lesson man this is a nice jacket man man to be an alpha man means more than just a wear a pen it requires intrinsic qualities that are de developed deep within it calls for lasting Brotherhood a word that is sometimes used in vain it
Means an honest devotion not anticipation for personal gain fraternity speaks of Brotherhood that’s something to achieve it’s more than just a grip of hands it’s an ideal to conceive you’re proud to be an alpha and share her Praises one but before you inflate yourself with pride ask yourself honestly how much have I
Done to realize the personal satisfaction of knowing you’ve given your all to have helped her cause unflatteringly when you rally to her call to combine all these qualities and root them deep within the product would be an alpha band deserving of his pen so take an honest inventory of your
Character within and for every virtue you find missing try and weave it in for a man without these virtues isn’t worth a grain of sand it’s plain to see it’s more than just a pin when you look at Stan that makes an alpha man Stan shingles the wonderer
In 1991 became a member of alpha alpha Incorporated and during your time at CMU you have been active in the support and advisement of the RO Delta chapter of alpha F Alpha you have been a part of bringing in over 80 young men into this organization your unwavering dedication
Guidance and support has been the Bedrock of our fraternity your impact on this chapter is long and deep and has been profound and your influence is Everlasting you’ve gone above and beyond the Call of Duty embodying the true Alpha Spirit of mentorship and Leadership your wisdom your patience
Your genuine care for each member did not go unnoticed know that your influence transcends the works and has left an ineligible mark on each member of the RO Delta chapter the brothers of Rod Delta many of whom I’ve spoken with over the last few weeks want to say thank you for your wisdom
Your guidance your unwavering belief that has helped shape them into the men that they are today St you truly embody the aims of our fraternity manly Deeds scholarship and Love For All Mankind so on behalf of the road Delta chapter and our alumni chapter IAI Lambda some of the brothers who are here
Today I’d like to say thank you Stan for everything you’ve done and present you a small token of appreciation on behalf of alpha F Alpha now I would be remiss if I didn’t take a few minutes to uh to give Stan his flowers personally um as we say in our culture
Um I met Stan about 27 years ago in Atlanta Georgia um as the old saying goes you never quite know what the uh interaction you have with someone and how that can change your life that was that moment in time for me I was a 23-year-old college senior in life
Uh trying to figure out what was happening next actually I was a 23y old college senior in Atlanta Georgia trying to get to the club that’s really what I was trying to do I was at a conference ersl conference in recre for Recreational Sports and the conference had finished up for the day
And I started making my way to the uh to the exit and this guy walked up to me and little did I know he started talking introduced himself and little did I know that was my first of countless stand conversations I couldn’t remember what we was talking about because actually I
Was trying to really get to the club that night but after an hour later Stan gave me his card and told me that he’d be following up in a couple weeks to get me up to Mount Pleasant to visit CMU I thought for a second there yes I’m
Free thank God here we go all right let’s go but true to his word later that week Stan called me and invited me up to CMU to visit Central Michigan University I was getting ready to leave campus after my visit and then we stood in the sack parking lot getting caught
In another stand versation Stan dropped some knowledge on me that was truly impactful he told me that if I chose CMU that he would ensure me that I would have the best possible professional experience of my life look looking back at my career at CMU and now at Alma College boy was he
Right Stan had the ability to see something in young people that they didn’t see in themselves there are many of us here today and online who are mentored by you and are where we are today because of you so Stan I stand here today surrounded by colleagues and Friends
Preparing to bid you farewell as you Embark upon your well-deserved retirement personally I am filled with a lot of emotions gratitude admiration thankfulness pride and a touch of sadness your guidance your wisdom your unwavering support have been the pillars of my growth both personally and professionally your presence in my life
Has been nothing short of transformative shaping me into the person I am today during our time together you’ve had many titles for me you’ve been my recruiter you’ve been my two-time supervisor you’ve been my advisor my mentor my Confidant my travel partner shopping partner fraternity brother but the one I cherish the most
You’ve been my friend you’ve been right there by my side for my highest of highs and my lowest of blows you embody what it means to be a true friend friend those who know stand you know that he’ll be there for you at the drop of a hat his commitment to you is
Unwavering throughout the years you have shared not only your knowledge and your expertise but you’ve shared your passion your dedication and your kindness your leadership style characterized by your by your integrity has inspired not only me but countless others who have been fortunate enough to cross your path your
Ability to see the best in others to nurture talent to lead with Grace is a testament to the amazing person and the wonderful Mentor that you are today you are that servant leader one of the things that’s remarkable about you Stan is never about you and you’ve told me that often time
Over the years this has never been about you you always put everybody before you you’ve made it your life’s work to prepare others to step into their greatness if you don’t think so there’s directors executive directors presidents assistant vice presidents associate vice presidents and even US vice
Presidents who are where we are today because of you your mentorship is unmatched and second to none your belief in my abilities even when I doubted myself propelled me to achieve things I never thought was possible your nuggets of wisdom which sometimes you have to find in the middle of a
Standers are impactful and life-altering it is through your leadership that you’ve shown us the power of empathy the importance of humility and the impact of genuine care for those around you your ability to inspire greatness as others is a rare gift stand and one that’s left a mark on my life and the
Life of countless others so as you step into retirement I want you to enjoy every minute of it knowing that you have left a mark on this place and knowing that your values that you’ve instilled in myself and others will live on forever so thank you my brother my
Supervisor my friend I am eternally grateful for everything you’ve brought to my life and as always I’ll be looking forward to another stand vation thank you [Applause] Damon I agree with every word of that so thank you um as we move on now we all know
That Stan is a big sports fan Chicago Bears the Bulls the Cubs you name it it’s when he coming to see himu Stan found a way to be around even more Sports I started working with Athletics for football and basketball as a sideline reporter color color analyst
And host of the Thursday night CMU front row coaching show so Stan we have a special surprise for you um we have a special video message from your broadcast Partners Mark Vander and Mike Cay so I’ll turn over toage well hello everyone celebrating Stan’s retirement Mark vanir here from
Houston semi meaning I’m not but I’m here from the Hyundai Texans radio studio and Stan leave it to me to have a sponsor on your retirement video and I’m here for stand versations as I understand we are calling it our times with Stan sharing memories good times
That we’ve had and we’ve had many and Stan I just got to say I’ll speak on behalf of just about everybody here at this event when I recall when we met San comes into your life he announces his presence with authority a big blast of heat Charisma you can’t help but get
Engaged with him in a conversation and before I knew it he wasn’t only doing statistics for us on the central Michigan Sports Network he was on the air he found a way that’s what he does uh we had so many joyous times together driving around the Midwest broadcasting Central Michigan football and basketball
Coming back many a late night in the car snowstorms I remember one particular game I think it was at akan it was either akan or Kent it was that part of Ohio and this was during the 3 and 23 Chipawa basketball season let that sink
In for a moment 3 and 23 anyway we lose badly one night as we did many nights that year and we get back in the car and Stan’s reflecting on the game we had two seven-footers on the team we were supposed to be halfway decent at the
Very least and Stan just says it you had to be there but he says Mark we’re terrible and the way he said it he was almost laughing crying at the same time and we were dying laughing just talking about how the team was not going to have
A good year we are going to be suffering right along with them but we love broadcasting no matter what uh but I still message Stan today and we talk about like when the Texans were struggling in 2020 2021 2022 three bad years I would Tex stand we’re terrible
He knew exactly what I meant uh unlimited conversations never never at a loss of what to talk about and again I’ll say something I I think a lot of people must feel this way about Stan I often am in situations where it’s not wwjd it’s wwsd it’s what would Stan do what would
Stan say about this situation and his voice still rings in my head in many instances where I’m thinking what would Stan say is the right thing to do here dealing with people situations you all know that he’s remarkable with people a remarkable leader uh total command uh
Wonderful to be around always and you know I miss those days you know I’ve I’ve done a lot in broadcasting since leaving Central Michigan but Stan I’ll always miss those days I was watching uh just scrolling scrolling surfing we used to channel surf I still do I’m older but
Hoop dreams was on hoop dreams came out in 1994 right when I was at Central Michigan and Stan saw it I saw it hoop dreams always reminds me of Stan because of that time because it’s Chicago hoops and that stand to me and I was watching
It thinking man this just reminds me of all the conversations all the great times we had uh just being just baked into that Central Michigan Sports scene and I absolutely loved it and uh Stan really should still be on the air today I’ll just say it uh because he’s really
Good at it but he’s good at so many different things his calling has been all over and uh could have done anything in this world but the mark that you leave on Central Michigan University stand is incredible L powerful and it’s not just being there it’s all the people
In the room and all the people who could not be there for this event who understand that you touched them and reshaped so many aspects of their lives and they’ll always be grateful and I’m sure the stories are flowing tonight and everyone’s saying hey it’s not just me
It’s this person and that person and that person of course it’s that way because it’s danan and he’s got the most wonderful partner with Renee the goat of all couples Stan and Renee anyway I love you happy retirement hope to see you soon have a great weekend my friend Stan shingles
Retiring that I can’t believe and those who know Stan well know it’s really he’s only retiring from his part-time job his full-time job is the mayor I gave him the name to me he’s always going to be the mayor because wherever we went call football and basketball games around the
Mid-American Conference whatever Arena or football stadium whatever ma Town it was whether it was Oxford Ohio Decal Illinois Muny Indiana Stan knew somebody and he was always shaking hands greeting somebody introducing me uh shaking hands and kissing babies as I said like Stan could only do so congratulations Stan on
Your work retirement but not your uh retirement from your passion of of college sports and College athletics I know I’ll find you at a stadium in a basketball arena near me so I know it’s been since 2003 since we last watched the chipa was cut down the Nets and win
An NCA Tournament game coincidence I think not awesome All right moving right along Stan you’ve always been a professional and because of your love for Recreational Sports I would like to invite Dr Tom Jones Meritus director of Campus Recreation Mr Dean prior assistant de student engagement success the University of Toledo and a former student and staff professional to stand to the
[Applause] stage everybody gets their own mic really you really expect us to follow all of that it ain’t fair is it and I’m sitting beside the Reverend who faces groups like this all the time and U makes uh many presentations I’ve forgotten what this was about I’ve been retired for 24 years
But um like the president Stan and Renee I’m not a Chipawa grad but I was hired in here to start the recreational sports program in 1964 and uh if there’s one thing and there’s probably only one that I’ve ever beaten Stan at I was here almost 36
Years and uh he’s come up just a couple years short of that my initial meeting with Stan was while I was planning in getting this building organized uh I wrote the program for it and uh was involved in designing it and then assigned by the president to oversee the
Construction of it and that was all going on while uh I was also trying to hire some new staff and I first met Stan in 1988 at the second uh national student lead on conference at Marquette University and I made a presentation there and he was there as a participant
And when my presentation was over um everybody left the room oh I mean except one Stan came walking to the front of the room to talk to me and we had our first ever standers I don’t remember what we talked about exactly but what I know for sure
Is neither of us made it to the next session um yeah I can talk probably as much as Stan can so I was as much to blame right Renee not long after that uh meeting uh I did have the uh the feeling when I talked to him I hope I get the chance
Sometime to hire this guy and then not too long afterwards we had a staff opening at last they were starting to let us build the staff for this building and uh I created a committee and appointed Don stabenau to chair it and uh they went to work having nearly a hundred candidates
For uh the position and uh got it down to 10 and uh he came to me at the office and said uh we’re down to 10 candidates and uh pretty clear number one choice and uh um he might even be a minority because there’s something in his resume that makes reference to what
I think is a black fraternity and I said yeah um okay uh we were trying to hire a minority I think we only had five blacks in the University faculty and staff at that time and uh we were trying hard to hire uh more within the university and boy
Have they done well more recently but at that time um I asked Don what the guy’s name was that was at the top of the list and he told me and where he was from and I kind of gritted my teeth and said nothing because I didn’t want to have
Any influence on them but the moment he told me the name I knew who it was and I was delighted that he was at the top of their list and I just told him tell the committee to rank the top five and bring me that list and that’s what they did
And he was still at the top of the list and uh so I was delighted that uh we got the opportunity and I had meet met Stan and had a long conversation with him and I picked him up at the airport and we he came in to interview and um and
Somewhere along the line he made the comment about how he took this job because he wanted to come in here and learn from from somebody with the experience that I had had and he knew I had a new facility going in and and um he’d like to spend two or three years
Here but he really couldn’t see himself spending his life in this one horse town and um this one Horse Town um was that and uh I wouldn’t say it is today but I understood particularly at that time he was single and I’m thinking you know there’re not much of a
Population of uh of blacks in this community and he’s a young single man and I’ll probably be lucky to keep him three years well 35 years later um this one horse town still has them and and uh perhaps the thing that two things that influenced that the
Most I wish I could I could say it was me but I don’t think so but he was watching this beautiful building go up while he was here and uh there weren’t many in the country any better than this and secondly he got engaged and uh we managed to get his
Fiance a position here as a professor and well she didn’t start out at full professor she had to work for that but uh but she was hired in having been an Olympic uh uh athletic trainer and she became a trainer here and she taught in the program and she also right across
The hallway here was the supervisor of our Injury Care Center in this building and so we put together the perfect arrangement for her and uh the two of them have stayed here for a long long time and it’s terrific um I had a couple of other
Things that I was going to say but I know the program uh is running long um after we opened the sack I would say say at least once a week but I never would attempt to count the number of times just dozens of evenings Stan and I sat in my office
After all the rest of the staff had left and talked about uh Recreational Sports and the profession and nursa and what was happening here at the University Etc and so on uh some of the greatest conversations I’ve ever had yeah stand in conversations um and I can emphatically
Say without any doubt that I learn more from him in those than he learned from me and without any doubt at all as I have told my wife several times and I’ve told him I think he’s infinitely better director of this facility and program than I ever dreamed of
Being so I managed to get the building and run it for eight years and turn it over to the person who’s really turned it into a fantastic thing so as the choir said Stan I love you for who you are and thank you for [Applause] everything
I just say wow sometimes as I get a chance to uh share a few words about somebody who means the world to me um I’m sitting there and just just contemplating and thinking I’m trying to hold myself together and when I come back to CMU and I get to see uh stand in
Dr Dr shingle face and I like to say Dr shingle y’all can call her Renee I call her mama Renee but I put I’m putting some respect on that doctor name I’m just saying what I’m saying but um I I I know how intense that is and you
Know them you know how special they are and Stan has been somebody that um I’ve wanted to be all my life when I say all my life Stan has known me since 1996 when I was a freshman on this uh on this campus wow yeah he saw me Dan I actually wasn’t
Working for the sack didn’t really know much about uh many people here but he was always genuine so he Damon Brown few others um saw a few of us who were black males on campus and they they put a group together they they decided that they were going to work on making sure
We as black men um saw something more of ourselves than just being students at at CMU but being more more prepared for what is to come so they created what was called BMT black male training okay that’s nothing that’s going to take over the world I you don’t be scared now I
Know I think some people I got to stand up by the way so I know some people would have been scared but it wasn’t to be scared scared about BMT was about making us better and so he reached out to um many of us he Damon and and a few
Others um and it’s it’s that Brotherhood group right that Brotherhood group reached out to us and they helped to build us they helped to build us from there I watched this dude let me tell y’all something about Stan now Dr Jones when I started working at the sack Dr
Jones would walk around he had these cowboy boots on right you always knew when Dr Jones was walking around he walk around with his hand behind his back with his cowboy boots Stan walks around and I’m sitting I’m sitting and I’m watching Stan and I really didn’t know him all that much and
Stan be walking around first of all if you know Stan that shirt was tied up all the way that button all the way to the top y’all know what I’m talking about button was tied all the way to the top always shoes was always clean I mean
Shining had some slacks on he ain’t wear no uh no no uh cargo pants and all that stuff he was in some slacks he looked sharp and I used to say I don’t know what that cat does but I want to do it I don’t know what he does but I want
To do it and then by chance he started talking to me he started figuring out and finding out more about me and he then he said if you really want to go somewhere here’s some opportunities for you he started talking about working for this great uh Department in this great
Building I ain’t know nothing about campus wreck I knew the sack right I knew all about the Student Activity Center because that’s where everybody hung out here at CMU but I got a chance to be able to be engaged this dude intentionally from that point all the
Way up until now I’m 40 some years old so all the way up until now right he has intentionally mentored me intentionally to this day to this day he’s still mentoring me to this day telling me who I need to talk to how I need to talk to
Those trips y’all was talking about um I remember he probably remembers this well we stopped we were going to uh to Ohio University or we went to Ohio University it was lead on Region 3 student lead on on the way back we stopped at a uh I
Think it was a uh an outlet mall outlet mall you know if y’all know Stan St we stopped at the outlet mall get out of the outlet mall we walking around he’s like deep you see this uh tie right here I think this is a nice tie you ought to
Put this tie with uh this shirt and then you got you what kind of suit you got a black suit oh man I think that this this this color go well with this black suit and I’m like wondering what is this dude doing okay so he said think you you you
Ought to get that so I got it so what he was doing unbeknown to me but I figured it out he put my suit together for my interview at Oakland University which is where the I got my first professional job I say that to say everything that Stan
Touches everything that he touches it turns to gold now I’m not just saying that as a member of alpha 5 Alpha Fraternity Incorporated but everything this dude touches it touches it turns to Gold it’s something that he’s intentional about making sure each and every person that he comes in contact with is
Better it’s better I’ve see many people in this room that I remember from way back in the day right it’s awesome to see you but we’re here to celebrate this dude we’re here to celebrate him because he’s an awesome person so Stan would normally do this he did it a couple
Weeks ago so actually I think this is the first time that I get to do this I feel good so on behalf of all of us professionals within the national intermal Recreational Sports Association and as Stan taught me for those that don’t know this Association was founded
In 1950 by by 20 uh uh black professionals from historically black colleges and University at Dillard University he taught me that well I remember that script I’ve never forgot it from the first day he taught me so on behalf of all of us that represent so many universities from across the world
From across this great country and for those that represent the great state of Michigan because I see many here and that represent the what is called the Michigan intermural Recreational Sports Association and on behalf of those of us who represent Region Three you all should be very proud of one Stan
Shingles who is not only not only has he served as the Director of University recreation the assistant Vice President of University recreation and then student student life here at at Central Michigan University but he is well renowned within our field as a one of our uh uh esteemed members of our our
Our National Association so I just wanted to say thank you love you appreciate you um I looked at that picture on Facebook and I started getting hurt because I’m like man I ain’t never seen that office empty I mean nothing on the walls and I just started like man I never thought

Nurse conference uh where you are in your leadership role with that organization and I was taking on my leadership role with uh NASPA as a matter of fact as their board ch here um I could see the respect that you garnered uh from your colleagues uh within higher education back then uh
Which you continue to do up until this day um I definitely feel blessed to have uh engaged with you and then even further when I came to ISU in my role as vice president for student affairs and was able to interact with you in your alumni role but even more importantly uh
We share something in common and that would be the first of all black Greeks uh being members of alpha alpha Fraternity in Cor Incorporated um so I’ve enjoyed our time together uh our our camaraderie our fraternal Bond uh the hours that we have spent um talking and conversing maybe even days and hours
Conversing uh because you got the gift everybody knows and you know it yourself you got The Gift of Gab and a matter of fact I cannot believe they gave you the mic okay at your um Board of Trustees meeting uh when you were being bestowed with your amerit status so I’m sure it’s

Words with you on your impact so now let’s get ready for a special thank you U from Team Ure at this time I’d like to invite Jen Nottingham executive director Recreation programs and Student Activities University recreation team in front of the stage for a special Tri thank you Lester let’s give it up
For Lester for coming and being our MC tonight well this afternoon hope you’re having a great time but like Lester said could I I know Ure we’re always bashful right so but can I have Team Ure come up here I know we’re running stuff I think we can like
Pause I think we’re good right but yeah you’re good just kind of stand up front yeah so Stan here we are in front of you today thanking you for your wonderful Le leadership that you have provided us you’ve challenged us to be our best and raised that bar of Excellence you have
You have led us to make decisions that are grounded in our missions and our values and our purpose you inspired us to be present with our students and get across Broomfield to be with our colleagues um you have um showed us the importance of saying yes for the greater
Good of the of the University you role modeled the importance of service to our profession and the community that we live in you but most important you have instilled us with the spirit of what it is to be a CMU Chipawa so we stand before you today
Like many of our fellow um alums that are here and staff members with a a piece of tradition that we have started a I don’t know 20 some odd years ago of marking time um so to today knowing that you are retired and he keeps talking about in the office every day Saturday
Except for Sunday um we have a Time piece for you so we couldn’t find the clock to do that but we did find some art that you can remember your time your 34 years here with us the inspiring engagement so things from this building
That you have been a part of is core so thank you very much for being here for for us and leading us we appreciate your leadership and making us better better staff for we can serve our students so thank you very much [Applause] Stan I would go a little personal on
This one but um I’m going to save my emotions because I like everybody else has been on a roller coaster of a ride so I don’t think you really want to see me blubbering so I just thank you for making that call 30 or 20 almost 30 years ago cuz nursea conferences coming
Up and I can remember getting that call to hey would you want to come to Mount Pleasant to be a CMU chipa and now here we are about to hang up the call but it’s not hanging up the call right so it’s you brought me here and it’s been
Wonderful and thank you and now we celebrate you and have that wonderful Sunset of the of sack clock behind you so thank [Applause] you thank you team Ure and before we get to hear from our guest of honor we have one more special uh video tribute kind of got a tease of
It but we’re actually going to to show it now um you’re more than a boss you’re more than a mentor you’re a dad and a papa so congratulations papa we’re proud of you congratulations on your retirement and thank you for your contributions at CMU love you
Love and now we’ve made it to the place in the program that we have our final stand foration for now um even though we know that it doesn’t end today so I’d like to have Mr Stan Shingles take the stage wow amazing thank you thank well thank you thank you so much
And it’s tough it’s tough I I tried to cry earlier so that that I wouldn’t cry here but um I think I just need to start with saying thank you but I just figured in the spirit of you know timeliness and Amy is here all right she’s from Western Michigan get
Her no you can’t touch her she she is gold Amy just retired from Western Michigan last Thursday after more than 35 years one of my dearest colleagues Amy and I have done so many things together and spent a whole lot of time doing a whole
Lot of things so in the spirit of of of timeliness I figured you know I would just have you know a few notes so that I wouldn’t take you know too long so I wrote some uh some notes down on index cards here so you might be here a little
While but and in in all seriousness we’ll we’ll we’ll try to keep this brief and and it starts with saying thank you you know and and you always have to start with thank you and I’ve said that uh too many times before and you know this is special uh
You know Tom mentioned my timeline of three years coming to CMU and and I recall you know the comment about uh the one horse town and many of you in this room know Darby guala she would just continuously every year say one Horse Town huh and one of the things I I
Recall is is is that um it’s up to two horses now so still not being being in Chicago and still not excuse me being from Chicago You’re Chicago and if you’re from the suburbs you’re from Chicago if you’re from Chicago um you know what you know uh but a few thank
Yous and let me start with this lady uh right here um in front my life partner the love of my life the person who keeps me grounded on so many levels and you know in in moments like this we often times uh get a little inflated you know
We start to think we are something that maybe we’re actually not uh I don’t have to worry about that when I go home because my sense of who I am gets grounded every day don’t miss a day so so thank you my love I appreciate uh you
This journey has been um great with you and one of the things that Tom failed to mention um was the fact that one of the reasons I even chose to come here to interview was because there was an a sports medicine athletic training program here and there could potentially
Uh be some opportunity for uh Renee here so I thank you um you see my son my daughter-in-law who are both chipas unfortunately uh Jon and rehea are going to Harvard and Yale respectively so uh don’t know if they’ll they’ll come here but they’ they’ve uh
They they they know about CMU and I want to thank Dr Jones and he told the story of of um our encounter in 1988 and the oper actually 1980 yeah 88 and uh Fabian D Rosario who was my dear colleague from uh Northern Illinois actually Fabian was the one who told me
About the opportunity here and I was like n I’m good you know Northern Illinois is 45 4 5 50 minutes from Chicago I’m good and he kept saying No it’s I think it’s a special opportunity you could just go and just just go and check it out so that’s what I decided to
Do and here we are 35 years later um having this this moment in this celebration um so thank you Dr Jones for for bringing me here so many years ago and the incredible experiences that I’ve been able to have here um they’re they’re just lifechanging and I I I
Thank you from the bottom of my heart um obviously leadership is important and in my time here I’ve had 16 supervisors so I’m a little rough on supervisors apparently 16 and 35 years and and as I look around the room I know Dr Davies I had to leave I had the opportunity to
Report to him um and until last Friday I reported to Renee Watson uh vice president of student affairs but when I came here I reported to Don I reported to Dr Jones I reported to John fiser who was here today I reported to uh Sean
Hoge and Tony voon who were in the back so uh the the common denominator with all of those individuals after they were done supervising me they all retired so so I think I’m a little rough on supervisors but no in all seriousness thank you for the opportunities thank
You for um trusting me and believing um in my abilities to to uh show up and to be there for our students and and that’s on on so many different levels uh my Ure teammates um current and past and many have come back and you know I I get the
Opportunity to see folks um uh who are still at the University who are in other places but it’s heartwarming when you have individuals to um you know who come back to CMU uh to work and I know Janelle’s in the back I mean Janelle was a student uh employee for us really
Interesting story you had a chance to meet my dear friend uh Fabian D Rosario and I know Don was on this trip and Jen and and uh Janelle we actually went down to Georgia to do some facility visiting and uh Fabian invited us to his house for a cultural uh Malaysian celebration
That he was doing and that was just uh Lori was on that trip I just thought about it I was thinking you were gone Lori but Lori was on that trip we had a great time and that those are the connect CS of um the opportunities that
We’ve been able to to afford one another so I I thank my Ure teammates we Inspire engagement has has been uh our mantra for so many years that I know I saw Jeff I don’t know if he’s still here if he had to to Tool out but uh a lot of
Different folks here and and again I want to thank you my uh our countless uh my my countless campus Partners uh they are many and um I spent a lot of years uh professionally in our finance administrative services division uh working for various vice presidents of and the um the Chief Financial Officer
Of the University as an auxiliary and um those were those were good times I had the opportunity to influence uh the student experience in that space because there’s not student affairs professionals those are individuals who are here to help to support the university and it’s foundations and its structures and its
Policy and its operation but I got I had the opportunity to sit at that table to talk about the student experience oftentimes they looked at me like I was a bit crazy many said what’s the ROI on that but oftentimes it was met with uh with great um interest in making sure
That our students had just an incredible experience here at CMU when I think about um and I I want to uh thank our advancement Partners I appreciate their kind words our academic folks uh Dr muffer thank you for your kind words it was those Partnerships that made being at CMU special and I
Truly appre appreciated the opportunity to ensure that we worked across the the various lines of organization and territory and I know Don and Tom and myself and others who were here when we first uh got here you felt like you were kind of dropped Behind Enemy Lines if
You will with this building sitting as an island inside the middle of everything Athletics uh but we were able to forge good Partnerships we’re able to find compromise um I know my good friend Mike dabs uh he and I spent a lot of time talking about um us and we not I
And me and mik I always appreciate that um the community and I know many are here my my very first I was here um the very first week of school and I got a phone call from an individual and he said hey I I hear that you officiate basketball and that’s when girls
Basketball season started in August and my good friend Norm senson dragged me all the way to myo Michigan to do a basketball I thought we were driving into deliverance and after and almost 2hour drive we got there and we go in this little bitty small gym and and um and we
Officiate a girls basketball game and that’s uh that was the beginning of a 35- year friendship with Norm so thank you Norm for for coming I greatly appreciated and uh and um thank you for for d uh making sure we got back from myio Michigan because um I I I did a lot
Of officiating with um with Norm over those early years and I oftentimes would go into Northern Michigan with norm and um oftentimes athletic directors or coaches or sometimes fans parents would say um I was the first black official that they had ever seen at those schools
So I don’t know if that’s pioneering I don’t know if that’s groundbreaking what I hope is that it well and I think my my funniest moments was I was standing on the Baseline during the timeout and a kid came up to me and he tapped me on
The leg and he looked at me and he said are you related to Michael Jordan Renee went to college with Michael Jordan I don’t think I look like Michael Jordan okay not even close maybe Charles Barkley I don’t know I think we got the the same the same physique I
Think so but anyway uh Norm I I appreciate those those times and George Earl who I officiated with uh he and Norm were Partners uh George’s here uh today as well uh we did some cool things with the city the township the county um we started and worked with um a group of
Folks to start Dan United as I served on the University’s uh committee for uh United Way and we were looking for different ways to raise money we had a seven-year run uh and where we raised um somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000 that that went to the community
And that all started with me sitting in a room and saying hey let’s start an an event and my boss at the time David berett who I share a relationship with President Davies with he was our vice president he goes we’re not doing events events lose money and I I turned around
And looked at some people and I said uh I think we can do this and as soon as I left the meeting my first call was to Jen Nottingham and I said okay let’s do this because jy’s the programmer not me those those days have
Been over for a long time so we got to work rolled up our sleeves and did some really good work in raising money for our community the same holds true with red cross and having served on their board for a number of years I had that opportunity
Uh Damon mentioned um our fraternity and I’m I’m fortunate to have some of my fraternity Brothers here today I appreciate you guys coming over from Midland and Sagen uh to be here and and um um the the service and the Brotherhood of that organization has helped to sustain me uh it’s very very
Difficult and and it was especially in my formative years being a black man living in Mount Pleasant uh Tom talked about the demographics of the University so in order to have that experience of individuals who look like you that you could identify with that culturally understood you for authentically who you
Were um I had to go find my fraternity brothers and and I did and and that uh was one of those things that really help to sustain me uh during my time here uh at CMU so thank you my brothers I I appreciate um uh the Brotherhood and and
More importantly all of the support and the work that um our fraternity does for the uh Great Lakes uh Bay Region uh you heard from some of our uh our uh Wendy uh the female who was talking about nura she’s actually our current president uh of nura and um U
She is doing a wonderful job she’s the director at uh Tain University uh Tain university has a very special place in in the heart of the shingles and Brown family because as many of you know um Kesha Brown um was a graduate of tan so
Every time we go to New Orleans we have a chance to visit there we certainly uh think about our our dear our dear key ship the students where where does it start I mean uh you know the number that have come back and I’m spanning I’m kind
Of pan in the room to see who’s here I mentioned Janelle earlier and um uh Shan Deo Sean uh was a student for us did great work and uh one of my proudest moments was when his um premature your daughter was born but he found the opportunity to bring her to Mount
Pleasant and I remember holding her in my hands not in my arms she was just a little bitty thing today she’s a senior at Central Michigan University how about that how about that the very first student and I always say he trained me I didn’t train him he
Was already here when I got here but Matt Lewis um Matt thank you for uh your incredible leadership as a student and and um Matt and his wife Becky are are both grads they both worked for us and and at that time Campus Recreation and um it’s interesting I I I oftentimes
Hear people talk about how special CMU is and then they send their kids to Michigan and Michigan State well Lamar shingles came to Central Michigan University uh Corey shingles who is my daughter-in-law came here for graduate school and her and Lamar met but Matt Matt and Becky Lewis
Are a testament of um what they believe in as chipo and the education because they have one daughter Amanda who who one daughter who graduated one daughter who’s a junior and then Garrett we just gave him the VIP treatment during CMU andu day and he’s enrolling at CMU this
Fall how about that how about that so so thank you Matt I I so appreciate you and and uh and Becky and your family and they spent some time at Northern Illinois which is where I came from so whenever I would go to dcal I remember holding Amanda when she was a little
Bitty a little bitty baby um as well so when when when you think about uh this this long experience it it it obviously Garners a lot of thought you you know and over the last few weeks have been very reflective and thinking about um you know your purpose and why
You do what you do and I just all I just added all up to uh what my mother used to always tell us and it was kind of two things one treat people like you want to be treated it’s just simply the Golden Rule the other one is leave it better
Than you found it and and and leaving um I don’t get to judge that others do so whatever that Legacy is um others get uh others get to judge that uh what I do know is um uh CMU is a special place it’s a special place because uh the
Experiences that people are able to uh to to have and when I think about uh my own moments at CMU um I remember sitting in my office and one of my dear colleagues from Oakland University came to campus we were playing Oakland and and basketball was basketball and he said said yeah I’m
Come up for the game and I didn’t think he was serious and and he came and he sat in my office and he told me um that I had won nurse’s highest honor it’s pretty special day Greg pretty special day what yeah yeah and and the first thing
You said to me I got you I got you it’s the first time you’ve never you didn’t have something to say and and I tie that into some of what Tom said earlier about um about wanting to to come and learn from him uh Tom was a president and was an honor award
Winner uh for nura I thought if I if I want to achieve the highest levels within our profession I need to be around people who have had those experiences and so um I was able to accomplish that and uh you know had the opportunity to serve with Lori who’s
Also president you know of nursing we had some pretty pretty amazing times uh doing the work of our of our profession uh we when I talk about our students and and I I need to make sure that I I I I pay the proper respect because we forget that’s why we’re here
Um it it is it is our students that’s why we’re here and there are certain relationships that start off fairly transactional and then they become transformational I remember in 1997 uh being in the office of institutional diversity and and our our uh women’s basketball coach called me up didn’t
Realize I was over in uh in in Warner thought I was here and said hey we got a recruit coming on campus with her mom want you to meet her and um they had to come to Warner not to the Student Activity Center and they brought her
Over and she was a bit sassy she was a bit confident she was a a little bit out of control and um and I just said come to CMU I think it’ll be a good place for you and uh John Jones our our daughter who came here um you getting old cuz
That you know that’s almost that’s almost 30 years now so getting a little getting a little old there but now in all honesty when she came we developed an amazing relationship uh over the years and and uh her and her mother melanes and and um uh vashon’s wife Kim
Their their family to us and and um you know it’s it’s special relationships I talked about Sean I’ve talked about um um I talked about the uh Matt and uh another special relationship is is uh um the the the you know the individual that I always admired because of her absolute
Fearlessness and her confidence and and that was uh Candice and Candice you you are amazing uh many individuals on this campus know um know um uh her from her days here and her brother Joel who’s here I don’t know where he went L and most people don’t know him as Joel they
Know him as bosi so let me let me make sure I put some respect on that bosi and bosi is one of the most incredible individuals one of the most inspiring individuals I’ve ever been around he never let his uh intellectual challenges uh Define him and more importantly never
Let them um keep him from doing the things that he wanted to do most individuals thought he was enrolled at CMU he was at every sporting event and Mike you probably remember the days when he was over chasing baseballs um and and softballs at the softball field uh
Because that’s what that’s what bosi did and just an imp incredible part of this community so there are a whole lot of people that you know when you do these kinds of things you don’t want to leave people out but you know my former uh Ure teammates thank you for coming back and
You know Betty and norm and and um and others and like I said you Miss so many people and this is a family and and uh Renee and I have been incredibly fortunate not having any family here to make CMU uh our family and I greatly appreciate the relationships that we’ve
Been able to uh develop uh yes I am in Illinois State uh University grad go red birds um I appreciate the you know my my dear friend and fraternity brother Lester Johnson and good Folks at Illinois state excuse me and their tribute but one of
The things that I I will take away uh from my time as CMU and I hope to be able to uh continue uh advocating supporting and working on behalf of this University um is that I’ll be fired up forever so thank you let’s give it up thank
You we had a few more um just closing uh things so again this will be the end of the formal programming um we have food over here to my right your left also in the back there if you want to donate to the shingles family service ow award
Please feel free to do so um enjoy the time enjoy the fellowship and uh we appreciate the refresher being provided by Max EMES today um and again enjoy the rest of the [Applause] day e
