Welcome back to Amanda seals show it’s your favorite comedian and Common Sense specialist Amanda seals uh so okay this weekend I was scrolling through my Instagram and I just saw everybody at the image Awards and you know I just had a thought that had come over me and I I
Put out I dropped this video I say dropped because apparently it created ripples but this is what the video said I just want to say something if it wasn’t for y’all I would really if it wasn’t for y’all I would really think that I ain’t doing [ __ ] because the industry I’m in does
Not recognize me and to be clear I’m speaking about the black spaces in the industry I’m in because y’all know I don’t give two dams about any of these other spaces but I’m uh the black spaces is what I’m referring to which is largely in part
Why I realized like I need to shift out of this industry you know like I don’t get invited to Essence women in Hollywood I’ve never been invited to the NAACP image Awards I’ve been I’ve been nominated for an image award never been invited to the NAACP image
Awards never been honored at black girls rock like I’ve hosted these events you know what I’m saying um I literally hosted the BET Awards in 2020 in my house and I was not invited to the BET Awards since so I just want to thank y’all for
Always reminding me that I I really am valuable because the game and the industry that I’ve been in has never let me know so some people misconstrued what I was saying and they thought that I was saying like I just really wish I was being in these spaces
But ultimately I really meant what I said which was that I really thank you know the fans and supporters because when you’re doing work that speaks to those spaces black spaces like the NAACP Awards and bet etc etc and then you don’t you don’t get acknowledged in
Those spaces like it can really you know mess with your mind and so it’s really been so beautiful and dope to have the actual you know the people the support ERS be the ones who really show you love and that has come to mean to so much
More to me than any of those other you know brand names Etc so I just want to continue to always show love to y’all you know when you all know like the theme song to this radio show when I see y’all in the streets and you’re like oh
You know like I me I met a man at the airport who was checking me in and was like hey you got the radio show I was like yeah you know like that really means so much to me and when y’all share with me about how things that I’m doing
And working on or things that I’ve said that you’ve either learned from it or you know taught you about yourself or just anything that is impactful as a result of the work I’m doing I really am so moved by that and it’s very encouraging and I know that I’m not the
Only creative who feels that way but these spaces you know it’s not like it’s a new thing black people have been excluded from White Place White spaces for Generations but I think it’s really trippy when we as you know black folks create our own spaces and are
Exclusionary and I mean we’ve been doing this for a long time whether it’s the paper bag tests you know what I’m saying or um you know even in um like sororities and fraternities you know just like the the choosing of who gets to be in what I mean I think that
There’s just something fascinating about how we determine I mean we love a VIP that’s the other part like we you know we’re always given the hierarchy I went to the march in Salma and they had VIP for the March okay that should let you know um but playright and actor Jeremy Harris
Who is the writer of slave play um he has only he has like blackout night for some of his shows where it’s literally they only sell tickets to people who identify as black oh wow and people have pushed he said people have pushed you know like he did this interview and this
White woman was like I mean you know are you looking forward to that she thought she was going to catch him and he was like yes yes I am and he was like cuz she he the play is um is is getting put up in in London right now and she was
Just like expecting him to B at the question and he said no you know I think that for this material in particular we should have spaces where it’s just black folks and they’re actually going to respond to that material differently than when it’s a mixed you know crowd
And I think some people bck at that but as someone who does smart funny and black and makes sure to let the space know like this is a safe space for black folks like if you are here and you are not black fine but do not disrupt this
Space with your you know individual BS like that’s not what this is about um we need those spaces we deserve those spaces and your girl Amanda seals I feel like I should be in all of those spaces because you know I’m out here Blacky black all day long so absolutely yeah
Yeah yeah they need to um they need to invite you next year would you go next year if they invited you or you already feel the type of way about it oh up okay I put on a dress I got outfits okay they need to get worn okay
They need to get worn so yeah I’ll go I do have a question though Amanda so is it that because how do the award show work all of the celebrities that are there they’ve gotten an invite and that’s why they’re there you can just go
You can’t just go okay you want a list yeah you get to invite your publicist whatever you know I know that with the NAACP Awards like some of the seats are fundraiser like buy the seats um and then but they do invite people and they have seat fillers and I mean I was
Nominated in the past so I don’t know why I would not be invited um but like the BET Awards you get invited or you are a presenter um uh but then there’s other like lunch and things like this you know that they just want a certain room you
Know they want a certain level of people in the room etc etc so uh the whole that you hosted the BET Awards in 2020 at your house is what is bizarre that you haven’t been invited they they called you to host but they haven’t called you to come and sit in the
Audience I mean if I’m keeping it a thousand million bucks oh boy even when I hosted like none of the executives reached out to me the high level Executives like I mean shout out to Jesse Collins and Deion Harmon who were executive producing like really just always take
Care of me but um I had to end up you know putting the bug in someone’s ear like why am I being treated like you know a side piece I I I’m doing this in the most difficult way possible and no one can I even can I get some flowers
You know what I’m saying like and so then shout out to Connie Orlando because she was like you know what you are so right and I think there’s something very real about the fact that that was pandemic year and there’s a lot going on and you know people are being pulled in
A million different directions and so you know perhaps that’s maybe why that was an oversight but I definitely didn’t I didn’t get treated like I know the other hosts have been treated in the past absolutely like it was very much like yeah yeah yeah shorty go do that
Wow wow you did a good job I remember sitting at home watching it yeah you did a good job thank you so much that was that was definitely a very high task that I was given I’m in there changing because the The Stylist uh assistant she
Got covid so nobody could help me and um so I had to do my makeup on FaceTime with my makeup artist I had to do my hair on FaceTime with my hair stylist my clothing stylist wasn’t there so I did like 16 costume changes by myself my man
At the time was sitting in the backyard gonna say that’s what I remember from that part the sneak my man at the time was sitting in the backyard on FaceTime telling folks yeah I saved the BET Awards so yeah so there’s that and I didn’t get
To go to the NAACP Awards the year I was inv the year I was nominated because that was the pandemic year and they didn’t hold they didn’t hold the live um you know they didn’t hold the the ceremony so anywh who uh you know there’s that you can listen to more you
Know I’ll talk about this more on my podcast uh small doses on our bonus episodes so you can subscribe to patreon to get access to that
