For tuning in tonight I spoke Wednesdays my name is Hurston i am the founder of old wednesdays I’m a third-year doctoral student at Florida International University in Miami Florida and tonight I have the pleasure having two very amazing gentlemen on the show do you like to introduce yourselves I would
Like to go first first my name is Javon Adams Walker I am a graduate from the University of missouri-columbia graduate with my business degree in May of 2014 just wrapped up my MBA at Webster University this past spring I’m currently working full time at worldwide technology in the order management project program management
Under the JP Morgan takes program and I am also the founder of prophytes we like a Greek Instagram page where we show love to all the grease around the country so that’s a little bit about me and you’re also part of a very prestigious Oh an amazing you know I’m
Part of the perverse the oldest to call it the bonus you know the CODIS I spoke [Laughter] with the plant that’s a man right here TV works in the building incorporated but yeah she works for 2003 graduate of George Soros State University I have a Bachelor of Science in computer
Information systems well my story’s been very unique because I did not go into my degree my field when I graduated I believe I always liked what I tell this story I always been one of the fortunate ones where in college of my entrepreneurial life went off early
You know while in college and I think that’s one of the best things that happened to us in school was just to understand and see life and not realize that I would want to work with somebody else and had an opportunity while in school and the comfort of the dorms and
The video three three meals a day to to do stuff so I’ve been doing entrepreneurial things since college for Kappa Psi and for myself I built a company called see what works incorporated where we were hosting events we went to the marketing field and have developed a lot of we can be
Concepts on one of them is the American picnic weekend that came into concept in 2004 and so it’s celebrating our 14th year this weekend so that’s appreciated it’s it’s been a really really interesting journey it’s really hard to believe that we’ve been doing this for literally 14 years you know every year
Is just a memory and we I always say this people we treat each year like is the first one you know so to me every single day GP has been a specific and unique experience you know so that’s what we’ve done outside of the Atlantic a picnic weekend we also hosted two
National events in Nigeria we weren’t dumb things also a big ugly business entrepreneur so could I speak then to spoken at Harvard and Georgetown and being big on the entrepreneurial circu just kind of you know telling our story and inspiring other entrepreneurs on you know the making themselves
The personal best that he can pick themselves so it’s been a great journey I’m really happy to be on this show and so we haven’t had this conversation yeah thank you so much for both of you so we got comments out here feel staying listening from London that’s great
That’s my brother City to London good job see ourselves out we got DC in the house we had a breath say I’m not trying to get back from a GP so I agree with everything to us [Laughter] so yes so now we’re talking about social justice and divine nine organizations
Were founded on social justice values right correct race gender all these things where do you think we are today what do you think the role of social justice is and divine nine organizations in 2018 and feel free to election yeah that’s a good start because personally
As a as a person I am very big on social justice I mean people for my personal page and just offline live and I’m not the one type of people who just talk about posting things I’ve actually been to the rallies I’ve been to situation where we’re talking to Congress in
Lawmakers on how do we effectively make change you know because everybody it’s easy to tweet them postings and you know 24 hours to three weeks later you forget but when you’re not talking to people that are actually writing the laws you’re talking to judges you’re talking to prosecutors you’re talking to you
Know statesmen that have a say in these things this story is differently the equation Turner comes out differently and social justice with grease it’s there but it’s not where it needs to be you know because if you know if you know your civil rights history major in or
Divine on Greeks you know majority of civil rights leaders with divine language who are taking active steps but I think what has happened over the years since the fifties and sixties is there’s been a conflict that people have fallen into where you know I saw freedom with
The world is so far removed on what is happening that because it hasn’t happened to you yet then it’s not a big deal yes I will tweet while post and I express my anger but I don’t really take the steps or know the steps on how to
Fix things yes we get out there we you know we protest I mean get out there black lies man but you’re not doing the effective work of changing the Lord you’re not voting for your friend who’s running for office you’re not trying out these candidates who are locally in your towns and
Communities that can actually make change or you’re not donating to them because you just feel now I am NOT doing that you know so social justice gets to the point where for divine line it can be better we’re currently is we have to do more and even with the green picnic
We’re always are big on social justice and even to have such conversations and you know when you know one thing we’ve done the alignment platform is with giving people an opportunity that if you’re running for office no matter where you are in the country or diviner
We promote you for free we put your information on there and educate people so it’s ugly and now we start watching people who get tagged and I remember there’s a guy he actually here on I think was up in 2012 he won run for second term won again and then he did a
Screen shot from about 2012 when we told him send us your information we’ll post you for free he’s like this is what we need you know so it can definitely be more I don’t wanna take up all the tagging me up we are at a good space but
We could be in a much better space by having more information as you get more involved and really knowing the system you said when you know the system you know exactly how to book change outside of just protesting I guess I would keep it one phrase everything he was saying
But in my opinion I feel like social justice has been affected by social media yeah joe said it’s been affected by social media yeah yeah social justice has been affected by social media like back in the day they didn’t have social media where you know of course tweeting
About this that no they actually did things like our knowledge King Rosa Parks these people going out marching mean with the President of the United States to make change but I don’t see that you know now in the present day we think you know just because we create a
Hashtag that’s in what’s gonna you know make observation or whatever the situation is but it’s more to it than that you like team say you better sit down at the table with these governors you gotta get out of the boat which is why you know of all these people’s a homeless
People campaign started off so it’s just the one the right people win seeing what we can do to really create change someone here commented slacktivism to so y’all are getting on very interesting points and one thing that book you commented was the rule of voting but in
Local politics of course and that is something that we especially as young people Millennials we see this a lot of generation zzy that they’re just not as involved when it comes to local politics you know google boat the most are actually all the whitening yes so what
Do you think it is that is actually maybe stopping young people from being involved in local politics whether it’s actually running for office or voting i think it’s kind of misplaced priorities and again feel like like javonni said social medias impact where it’s people are more and I don’t like to challenge
Everyone but people are more kind of selfish they’re not selfless you know you’re not thinking about the next manual we must take care of your day to day and you know I can actually I’m actually very involved in just everything local politics and just discussions and organizations and
Supporting rooms even if it’s not financially how can i leverage my platform and even my demographics and and people to support a course or how do I can I influence it continuously and what what I’ve noticed that happens is people just get to the point where to get too comfortable because he doesn’t
Affect you like I can tell you right now in the last we do especially like okay mass shootings we exist for example we lost a close friend of ours they albany graves she was killed in you know and then what Scott is a friend
Is it is the cousin of a good friend of mine so that’s a one person remove it’s close so now you know before you know people say like well it’s nobody till it happens to you or please no police brutality happens to you so at what
Point do you really get it what do you wait for it to come and hit you first in the fridge then you want to get off set no you should have been upset when it happened today when you would not swing or something’s you are looking at the
Next man or woman while you’re just upset but thanking know how to activate because guess why you got your friends in Congress you got friends in in in local office or you stay prosecuted and you got he might say what you need you this police officer acts up or does or
Breaks the law we need your press charges and lock you up because we don’t believe in ourselves always feel that we have the power that we’re still believing that all voting stuff from my vote doesn’t count people feel and I’m going to use this directly is that some black you feel that
Especially people feel that we have truly a voice in voting no we don’t because if we truly had a voice in voting we walk it out a vote so people feel like that’s why I like now Donald Trump as president because we’re glad you felt or my point doesn’t count but
You’re the one on the losing end they’re not comparable to the old white people or the white or is that could have their interest they know what they want guess what they the ones that want Trump to win I come to suppress people of color they’re going to get out their food and
Guess what they’re going to get exactly what they want how they want the America so us that are not in the position to to this to be gone before because just fifty years ago we couldn’t vote what are we doing you don’t have you don’t have the right to feel like my vote
Doesn’t count you need be out there every single time as a local or federal election yeah so do some kind of feedback not what he was saying do I do you think that because as people of color maybe have a moral responsibility be civically engaged in your community
And our communities like do you believe that we should be out here like just on a moral standpoint I mean of course not because I mean T were you happy with what’s going on when they proportion articles I’m definitely buying while the injustice is that happen in America and
I mean go back from the voting point like I don’t know what it is like when it comes to voting we as people don’t do it we you know the president of the presidential election to come around what’s really cute isn’t then you notice in the House of Representatives the
People the mayor or city you know that’s where it starts you know because without voting nothing’s going to change like for example I mean I was just talking because about this earlier but kind of like with the Electoral College thing I think that’s something that that needs to be revisited because with the
Last election of course that’s how but if you realize that’s the presidency is the only office position that the Electoral College is in is not for like mayors there’s not your voting system yes it’s interesting that when it comes to electoral politics or college a lot of
Us just don’t understand the nuances and the intravenous of how these systems actually work why you can’t win yeah like given like I mean of course like how he was saying how Caucasian people but I mean this was put in the system would long time ago before African able
To vote you know so real quick we have a couple of questions I mean I’ve been trying to try to get out um so we have a question where do you all stand on the vote the lesser of two evils in return makes you in evil unless her to evil in return
Makes you in return to evil so trying to pick between a Hillary who was also I mean she had her fair issues right and then also a donald trump and it’s like where do you stand like when it so this is this is my thought process there’s never a perfect candidate does
Not exist everything even when Barack Obama ran for president he was not the perfect candidate boy I understand what you will stand on picking on the lesser of two evils but at some point you have to come down to reality of what what yet look at what
Potentially could happen if you vote for this person well you don’t vote for this person you know and people playing people roll the dice bank I remember clearly when I went to vote and I voted for Hitler I was just so sure I mean I remember her from
The claiming days and when she was Secretary of State and to everything and I was sure she was going to win she got it Trump to come in let’s just know that why a lot of people of color roll the dice on I’m not gonna commando and I’m
Not playing and less of two evils oh you’re not in the position it would take that you are equal to the white supremacy that will always hold priority over you because they get out of vote they control the economics they control the government and then control everything with the law they write the
Laws so why do you think you’re going to be the position of power you can’t even book them out you know I mean so it’s um it’s a tough thing to play but you have to just play what is in the best interest of us against not being selfish
Yes you’re looking more than just well for me no it’s for everybody here it’s for black people for Hispanic people it’s for Asian if you’re being selfish and when you put that surface into the equation you can pick adequate I mean as far as like Alisa to use
Conversation I mean it’s very touching because like in my opinion it’s like when someone blatantly shows you who they are you supposed to take that you know like right when you have someone who’s right for president saying what do you have to lose right you know yeah they’re nowheres communities saying
Stuff like you know you know back in the day they’d be doing this they did one that you know like I miss the good old days yeah you hear stuff like that like why what makes you even think to so let me ask a question if I can bring it back to
A Greek life and this is a critique that this talk to my friends things have come up they when it comes to civic engagement we have a in to your point about social media which plays a huge role in all of our lives we see that there’s a lot of
Divine nine just Greek organizations are just Greek Instagram pages and we see that most of the posts are either stepping strolling we got we got the hottest probate people jumping out of helicopters all right but the thing that you probably see the least is people engaged in the community right whether
It’s getting people to vote for registration and I and I’ve been out there any people to sign up that is it’s tedious it’s hot outside it’s crazy especially in Miami like it’s not fun work and you’re not gonna get all the likes all the views of course alright so
What do you think that says about D 9 as of right now because it seems like people just it seemed like a way to get famous on what do you I mean it’s kind of tough right look there’s like a like a tension there I don’t know what do y’all think
About that I mean as far as when it comes to like telling people to vote in this they know that I don’t care less about the lights you know as long as I’m getting that message out there to these people’s to these people saying hey this issue is happening we have this person
In California running for this position or we vote no for Prop a because this is how other things not follow that you know as long as I’m getting the message out to the masses I really don’t care about you know what if it doesn’t get you know lights and
Instead of it which is you know I feel like we as groups are you know responsible for educating our communities why for example I’m from East st. Louis Illinois a small city in Illinois across from st. Louis and with my branch out there we have of all these
People – hopeless people campaign of course you know started first but we actually go out and give the streets hold up signs talking to people passing out you know have the information so let people go because with st. Louis in the example it was 9% of people in East st.
Louis have college degrees if they see vote no for Prop a or vote YES for Prop 8 how are they going to really understand what this property is if they don’t have anyone out there – you don’t really explain so that’s hard jobs is you know man women will greet them and Gartley
Into our communities you know it’s pretty information so interesting that you bring at the grad chapter because that we just had a comment here saying the older generations of both frat sororities seem to be more politically engaged and like the element we see I think all the Greeks it just depends you
Know again social media I just know again it kind of still goes back to so it’s funny because the essence of Greek life of picking quality people to become a member your organization affects your daily output of what your chapter your organization juices so if you’re picking your homeboy you
Know hearing worth it down doesn’t give a about trying to give it a go he just wants to be popular and you know strong all the day for the chicks in party and drink you just polluted your chapter with trash so and I hate to say but that’s
What’s happening a lot now which is why you find more people doing things of that name you very fine I mean it’s very you see people that very proactive on social justice that talk about these things on that thing right he doesn’t get nice I know when we post things on
The ATP page I’m going to tell you how many nights we get how many views the what because people see that in school it’s not a video doesn’t have any caption odds it has it is still image for let me click on so but all the ones that have more in
Into it for the reason of not just building not just for building themselves but they’re building mankind not for service see different that’s why you see like all the Greeks are out there put out for four week picnic weekend is we have five different organizations registering people to vote
Five we gave them that free to come out there I just put the message out and collect and getting registered because we want to be able to make sure that we don’t miss out a link on the biggest gathering of all these attorneys already there’s some people that I don’t are not
Registered either that and it’s funny because we have situations where we have people that have transitioned out from being a non-us city in the coming citizen and they forget about and I said that for this is because we had a lady whom that happened to us she registered
To one of our links that she let us know I registered to you to vote so we have to we have to try some type of middle ground to bring younger Greeks who are looking at Greek lab as a true social organization or just having fun tonight
Yes that’s cool but what I brought back you’re not t sure where so what are you doing this is okay why don’t you do this is what you need to do we need you to give us 30 minutes of your time help register all your little cousins that 17
Turning 18 let’s register all ready to vote make it cool to vote get getting more active community service project but it’s tough I mean I won’t say it’s not gonna happen overnight it’s very tough because we there’s been a new huge generation bread we’re selfish and being
Us all about me is taking center stage and again my social media like you said has is polluting this thing but I still believe that social media is still being impactful like so does the wonderful thing yeah it needs to do so we have the opportunity to try to make sure that
With conversations like this people others that are not just yourself that we continue to put this message out you know because I think it still will strike a chord is somebody when they hear it from a different type of angle that we need to do this okay let’s
Get one like now in November for the state of Georgia we have the first black Democratic nominate a woman running for governor you know Stacey Abrams has already made history in America she is the first so now the focus is on Georgia because Georgia is a big economic hub either
You’re flying from here to connect in south with the Delta for jobs for everything Georgia is a big in fact is that it’s coastline with Savannah for for import if she wins and that’s pending from the help of register a lot able to go vote going to rural areas and switching
Voters who are more on the conservative more or less you know non Nami side we need to be able to get people like that in what it takes our younger generation because we have that swoosh media impact I’m getting them on board to realize that yo in five 10 15 years
From now this decision today can affect you big-time and that’s part of the problem that sometimes with young people we don’t think that far ahead right that’s too that’s just too far that I’m worried about the now not only the suppers suppers component but I’m worried about tomorrow like I’m worried
About tonight was poppin tonight right so we’re not really thinking in the future like that we have to because you know the hours days weeks months years like word in June it was just the summer time is fine so we just have to be very conscious of the Sun again it’s just
Continue to educate it so really is talk to who’s going to listen everybody is not going to listen but we keep just pushing the messenger it’s interesting because in the comments here people are saying that well on the one hand if people post on social media and they’re
Doing community service then it’s like off look they’re finally in community service but then if they don’t post it then it’s like oh they’re definitely not doing community service so it’s like exactly something like social media like we just got to get out of the mindset of like
What are we bout to pick back up our community service galaxy this is Yahoo kill time you know you shouldn’t kick they shouldn’t care about now here’s a tough question too because when it comes to d9 especially and we see it’s officer with energy C with Hispanic multicultural innovations where
Sometimes we tend to be very Pro Race alright so d9 might be like very Pro black the Hispanics may be very Pro Latino Pro immigration but sometimes we don’t have an overlap of it all right right because we also know that black people can be Hispanic it can be
Caribbean they can be immigrants Hispanics and beat it so sometimes seems like the politics on whatever organization you’re in or whatever council you’re in sometimes is very like OneNote it may be one-sided so what do you think about is it difficult to overlap I think you were talking about
Earlier about how Anisa T plays a role like you were born in two different countries so coming into this atmosphere is very different born in this country right more right I’m from Miami so you can never assume anything about anybody yeah yeah so it’s like how do we kind of
Balance that it is enough to deny it maybe it’s not I don’t know what would y’all think it’s a tough question yeah balance is you know one thing about we have this conversation area where we have people that are you know I’m very Pro black I’m not I was not born in America
I’m a Nigerian I’m a British Joseph’s so I hold a lot of things more dearly than the average person immigration is an issue because that no friend it affects people that I know even either your your African or just Caribbean or whatever is an effective point so I speak on those
Issues you know then there’s the issue of what’s happening in America I’m black regardless before I open my mouth I’ll tell you where I’m from I’m glad so whatever is happening to African Americans is going to happen tinea I’ve had it to detail guns on me
I’ve been profiled I get for a lot of time you know suit or no suit well that’s what shows a teacher I get profile so we have to like I said all these organizations it was the multicultural Greeks d9 or dis we all outside of clean selfish we all have to
Find a middle ground because there’s power notice if everybody comes together and all that so what’s your issue I’ve been Jose and his family they’re pushing on this immigration I’m trying to point saying this this and that but guess what if we all come together say
Oh we’re gonna reach out to our elected officials that will be put in and then even know like hey you guys have to vote them because they are a positive impact to the community they bring in income they pay taxes if you remove them who’s gonna feel that way and that’s what’s
Happening now when they’re pushing immigration issue and scaring all the farm workers who is going out there to do the back we can work with no insurance no vacation pay no pension that nobody’s doing that and guess who cares estas if I started to affect us the consumers who buy the daily products
Of their work so we have to find out over that but again is that what’s the solution right now I don’t know the solution right now however the conversation I’m bringing continuously people together to say look we have to do this I think I keep going back to
Programs like this because not everybody does this nobody’s having this conversation because if if we start doing this we start taking action we start planning from planning records an action actually go to actual implementation you know so it’s a lot but I know is that I believe is very
Doable and again we start to see things slowly changing pockets of the country watching the political news always running for office you start to see people are tired of that race is like nice without really revolting if you make a racist comment to anybody I mean catch you on camera
Bigger coming on they finally leave behind your life and anyway explore you so that’s telling you the tone is changing the for big we used to keep quiet but we just opened that that’s not to change at the police and you just killed my ex Mary and I seen your own
Boy they shot them in the back on TV I couldn’t believe when I saw that oh the video the video is there I saw it I just saw today in one thing I think that is you you were talking earlier about civil rights movement and sometimes I think as
Young people who want to see things happen overnight yeah all right and kind of like a microwaveable kind of kind of population and civil rights movement took years upon years was building and building and people thing just happened in sixties a lot of things happen prior to the sixties leading up to that
So what are some things that maybe like because you have a big social media platform now it’s growing y’all have a big it’s like what are some things that y’all try to do maybe through social media to kind of also create awareness and just kind of get
The word out there yeah so I know whenever we have our moments people hope these people campaign I post pictures of you know me being out in the street and sometimes you know that might cause questions and said Oh what city are you in and you know let them know what’s
Going on in the city of st. Louis and how is you know this you know educating them and encouraging them to make sure that they’re you know purchasers to vote I feel like there are many ways like even with Keyshia bottoms the new mayor of Atlanta clinic got a man named Keisha
Love it you know when that was happening I thought you know she was a family Delta got my harder Kosovo is the story my Instagram yeah make sure you give people that’s why I also feel like with like pages like ours we have to it’s almost like our duty that is you know
Support things like that to get the word out because people are watching us if you don’t realize how much of an impact yeah seriously man like to be a man I just think it’s you know it’s for fun to be like I guess is whatever but like
Even just for being where we are now for me like oh wait but you know you can really think about it like that deep down but you never realize how much of an impact you’re having until someone tells you about it I don’t know what are you thinking and they were going start
Wrapping up and then you get busy busy week that you know maybe that man this is my hell we you know I’m just I think we we just need two more you know we should never get comfortable because we’re not you know I could say the promised land you know when he listened
Dr. mark you know we get to person I one day this is not the promise that yeah you know is such you know look at what’s happened to Catholic and it just like I literally boycotted the entire for I’m a hardcore Falcons fan I did watch one
Game you know so I just think we we need to do more and be very steadfast in our actions I mean firm you know because again I said people are doing thinking people actually really boycott in the NFL cop kappa team have a job right now because they know the you know it’s
Interesting to say that I just heard today on the news that Starbucks is actually closing 150 stores this year because of lack of revenue in urban areas people don’t realize see people they live in a bubble like when if you tonight oh man it’s just mean I know
They pounded collecting no not just black people you talk people are coming black people African Caribbean you spend everybody coming together what because if they can erase this to you or they can race it to me easily so we collecting that if you’re my friend and
I’m a supporting but you see people need to do that more and I’m glad it happened I’m glad Starbucks is feeling that because the actions of employee mechanics is financially crippling them yeah hidden pockets man the market same with NF and I know I just know like
Capital house yes well for house yes you know they keep being black below it’s happened more than once that’s the thing Savas Intel unions as to tell you something is going on even happens boy I just don’t believe you don’t exact something’s going on out here we have to
Take action we have to some party words share what you think man thanks for inviting me man oh come on Georgianna stories I always this is keep this up man absolutely you’ve got a podcast to them yeah man what’d you do man come on man this Proficy like podcasts it me not
Touch over anything mr. banks I a comedian you come on my podcast come and talk about his life interesting library that’s a very interesting life yeah yeah you a little bit about him my touch different topics around like Greek do it so it’s on iTunes itunes podcast Google
Play and SoundCloud is where you can find it and I also have an animated series to release it so it’s my first time telling somebody they like it man don’t laugh Dave Linda’s got the Iowa mention an animated series later on this summer called college days look out for
Only to follow profiles easy like on YouTube subscribe we’ll be releasing beautiful people don’t give things man yeah for so any parting words man um biggest part a lot of funny ones I have I you know people suggest please constantly stay woke her so to speak you
Know be aware you know be more selfless be more engaging and be more compassionate for what’s happening to others because just because they don’t look like you or they don’t live in an area like you you know you do have a voice and your voice can resonate into
Serious ripples and then affect voting it should be not a as there’s there’s no choice it’s vote only you have to vote you have to continue to educate the next generation behind you your younger brothers cousins that are not 18 yet because if they see you’re not voting is
What you’ve done you set the tone for another generation not to care about voting so we have I take I mean though I take voting as serious as pay my bills they my mortgage I don’t miss it I know when it’s coming I research it and I
Make sure I’m there I have everything ready and I go for you know so let’s let’s definitely not fall into this statement us and I think what they always want to say is let’s not also fall into the stigma of listening to people on social media to sway your
Opinion you don’t know these people they see you see three lines or comments and they’ve change your entire thing you know you see alert yeah you don’t research do you see somebody sunny well you know they did and then I yeah okay yeah I’m never gonna vote I knew it and
You sway rather than understanding you know to me voting is really honoring those who are you know that unfortunately losing a lot of civil rights people slowly they’re passing and they always have where the person I torch to yeah you know and the torch is
To every single one of us is there’s no the model the king is not there’s no there’s no money the king you’re never gonna happen but you can’t have a Javan cannot achieve well you can’t have a bachelor you can’t have all these different people that can become their own voice to push
So my party was just like you know we have to just stay true to especially green stay true to our service our commitment to human beings and – and life and this is continuing to build because once we let me take care of the most basic needs of human rights and
Foundation everything else is going to flourish you know so that’s um the biggest thing I want to push them thanks everybody who always supports agent keen the animal 14-bit so any could be number three it’s crazy right now crazy everybody know where Willie’s you know
It’s about to be crazy so thank you all so much thank you so much everybody that’s also a wise man once a it don’t boo whoa yeah in speaking of voting uh well thank you so much everyone for tuning in tonight next week for the first time I’ve been working
Really hard finally got our first politician on the show he’s part of the House of House of Representatives in Florida she’s actually a brother about to return incorporated he’s gonna be on the show I have a lot of very difficult controversial questions that I will be asking him questions that need to be
Asked so please feel free to send me all your questions that you have first time ever having a politician on the show really good I feel free to tune in next week and p.m. Eastern Standard Time we’ll be back to Miami thank you to these amazing gentlemen thank you
