Amber Shaverdi Huston

When Amber made the decision to change career paths and become the first woman executive director of the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) it was an easy choice. Amber started her career working for fraternity and sorority inter/national organizations and found the work rewarding but always felt herself being pulled toward her other passion- higher education.

“Higher education has always stayed with me because I love working with students,” Amber says.

This passion started after having a positive undergraduate student experience herself. Amber attended Pittsburg State University where she says, “The student experience outside the classroom really shaped my beliefs and values.” Now, Amber is charged with securing that out-of-classroom experience for thousands of students.

“I had the most phenomenal experience and I know the power of sorority and I have seen so many other women benefit,” Amber says. “I want to make sure the sorority experience exists for others. I want to make sure other women have the ability to grow and improve.”

While Amber had a positive student experience she did have to work to create it. During her first semester of college, she felt something was missing. “I knew I was looking for something that was going to give me access to leadership on campus,” Amber recalls. “I felt sorority was a vehicle for that. Some people join because they want a home or friends, I wanted leadership.”

And she found it. Amber went on to become the president of her chapter with dreams that would take her beyond that experience. She traveled as a leadership consultant for Alpha Sigma Alpha then became a chapter advisor and has volunteered at many leadership conferences. Now, Amber serves on the national council for Alpha Sigma Alpha.

“I see it as an opportunity to shape Alpha Sigma Alpha and give back,” Amber says.

Amber’s sorority experience empowered her and set her on her career path. Now, after many years of service and growth, she is a strong advocate for the sorority experience.
