New Valor Scholarship Awarded to Mateo Portelli, UNLV ’25

The Phi Delta Theta Foundation is proud to announce Mateo Portelli,  UNLV ’25, as the first-ever recipient of the Valor Scholarship. Established in 2024 by Lt. Col. Henry G. Heren IV, the Valor Scholarship supports an undergraduate or graduate member of Phi Delta Theta who is a veteran as defined by the US Department of Military Affairs/Veterans Affairs Canada, on Active Duty or serving in the National Guard or Reserve components, or Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadet with a current contract for military service.

Mateo Portelli is a first-generation college student currently pursuing a BA in history with a minor in military science at UNLV. He began his military career in 2020 when he enlisted in the US Army and aspires to become a signal or cyber officer. His ultimate goal is to honor his family by achieving the rank of colonel.

As a dedicated member of Phi Delta Theta, Mateo has embraced the Fraternity’s core values—Friendship, Sound Learning, and Rectitude—not just in his chapter but in every aspect of his life. Whether he’s serving his country, shaping policies, or guiding the next generation of Phi Delts, Mateo is driven by a deep commitment to lead with integrity, compassion, and a desire to create a better future.

Leadership is a big part of who Mateo is. As a former chaplain and the current alumni engagement chair for his chapter, he’s always been focused on helping his brothers grow and succeed. He believes that true leadership is about lifting others up and making sure their voices are heard. His time in Phi Delta Theta has taught him that leaders don’t just give orders—they support, inspire, and lead by example.

“My vision for the future encompasses a broader goal of serving the community and continuing to be an active and contributing member of Phi Delta Theta. Whether it’s through mentoring future members or contributing to policy that affects the lives of many, my goal is to make a difference.”

Mateo’s commitment to education is just as strong as his dedication to service. Throughout college he has balanced three jobs while keeping up with school and Phi Delta Theta. His experience in the army has only strengthened his time management skills, teaching him discipline and the importance of staying focused on the bigger picture.

Even as Mateo advances in his career, his bond with Phi Delta Theta remains strong. In 2023, Mateo became the first Iron Phi from Nevada Beta. Mateo is also a First-Generation Student Scholarship recipient and Robert J. Miller Scholarship recipient. After graduation, he plans to stay involved with his chapter by serving on the chapter advisory board and helping future brothers succeed. He’s already thinking about how he can give back financially to help others.

The Valor Scholarship is just one of the Phi Delta Theta Foundation’s hundreds of scholarships. Students pursuing an undergraduate degree should complete an undergraduate scholarship application in myPhiDelt before April 1 to be considered for scholarships for 2025-2026. Students pursuing a graduate degree should complete a graduate scholarship application in myPhiDelt before May 31 to be considered for a 2025-2026 fellowship award. Please reach out to the scholarship and impact coordinator, Bonnie Schiller, with questions.
