Lexington, Va. – Sigma Nu Fraternity is pleased to announce that Emilio D. Ferrara, IV of Atlanta received Sigma Nu Fraternity’s Man of the Year, Scholar of the Year, and Alpha Alumni Chapter Affiliate Awards for the 2023-2024 academic year. The Fraternity salutes Emilio and this year’s other distinguished award recipients as exceptional members of Sigma Nu Fraternity whose service and leadership exemplify the Fraternity’s mission to develop ethical leaders.

The major emphasis in the selection of the Man of the Year, Scholar of the Year, and Alpha Alumni Chapter Affiliate Awards is evidence of the member living an honorable life by upholding the ideals of Sigma Nu and influencing others to do the same. Additional evaluation is based on the applicant’s academic excellence, extracurricular record, and demonstrated leadership for the Fraternity, school, state, and nation.

Each academic year, up to ten outstanding seniors are selected to be honored with the Alpha Alumni Chapter Affiliate Award. Begun in 1962, the Alpha Affiliate Award has a proud history and is one of the highest honors the Fraternity can bestow upon a member.

The Man of the Year Award is presented to the most outstanding leader and the Scholar of the Year Award is presented to the most academically excellent member each year. Emilio was chosen for both awards through a competitive process.

Emilio Ferrara graduated from the University of Georgia with a 3.99 GPA, majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He served Mu Chapter as Lieutenant Commander (vice president), where he significantly increased member leadership participation by 40%, and was instrumental in organizing the chapter’s 150th anniversary celebration, which saw over 375 attendees. Emilio was also deeply involved in the chapter’s community service initiatives, serving as an afterschool volunteer coordinator for the chapter’s work with Extra Special People and helping secure $180,000 in funding for melanoma research through the Jam for Cam philanthropy as the chapter’s Head of Fundraising & Corporate Sponsorships.

Emilio held numerous leadership positions within the fraternity and sorority community, both locally and nationally, including President of UGA’s Interfraternity Council, where he represented 3,000 fraternity members, and he was one of four collegiate members appointed to Sigma Nu’s High Council as a Collegiate Advisor. Emilio’s performance in the classroom is equally as impressive as his leadership within his community. He held two of UGA’s highest undergraduate scholarships, the Foundation Fellowship and the Stamps Scholarship. As a Foundation Fellow, he was one of fewer than 100 students granted this premier scholarship in their first year out of an undergraduate student body numbering close to 30,000. In 2023, he was named a national Barry Goldwater Scholar, and in 2024, he was a national finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship. Emilio will enter a PhD program in Bioengineering at UC Berkeley – UCSF this fall.

In nominating him for the award, Dr. Kimberly Klonowski, Associate Professor of Cellular Biology, said, “I would place Emilio firmly in the top 1% of all students I have engaged with through undergraduate teaching and research… Society needs more intersectional individuals like Emilio to make big changes and breakthroughs in established sectors that have been doing the same old thing with incremental success.” Dr. Michael Adams, Professor of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Microbiology, added, “He is an extremely mature, articulate, personable, and highly motivated individual, and, simply put, he is an exceptional student.”

Sigma Nu wishes Emilio success in his future endeavors and hopes that he will continue to proudly represent the Fraternity’s mission and principles through his honorable conduct.

Headquartered in Lexington, Va., Sigma Nu Fraternity was founded in 1869 at Virginia Military Institute.
