Taking a Chance on Sisterhood: How My Sorority Changed My Life

In high school, I was the quiet achiever. I got good grades, stayed out of trouble and spent most of my time reading or joining another club. I wasn’t unpopular, but I wasn’t exactly the life of the party either. I often admired people who found their future bridesmaids and best friends, and I always wondered when I would find mine.

That wondering followed me into college. Watching my older sister thrive in her sorority at the same school planted the seed in my mind — along with a dose of anxiety. Fear of the unknown, but optimism about what could come. Seeing her flourish made me wonder if I could find that same kind of growth and belonging. Her experience gave me the courage to consider recruitment seriously, even though I wasn’t sure I’d fit in.

Recruitment was an experience filled with emotion I never expected. I remember during Preference Round, our Pi Chis (recruitment counselors) said, “Girls, it’s totally OK to cry during this round. It’s so emotional.” I thought to myself, what could be so emotional that I’d cry with girls I just met? I was wrong. Not only was I full of tears, but I also realized I had found my home in Chi Omega.

Joining my sorority was transformative. I learned how to speak up, how to lead and how to lean on others without feeling weak. I took a chance and ran for the public relations position on our Panhellenic Council — and was elected. I was given the opportunity to make my mark. More than anything, sorority life gave me a sense of belonging. It taught me that vulnerability is a strength, that loyalty is earned through action and that true friendship is built on showing up — again and again, regardless of the pledge class or status. My sorority sisters have celebrated my wins and held me through my losses.

Chi Omega has given me career-ready tools, alumni who genuinely want us to succeed and a sisterhood I can count on. From supporting our philanthropy, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, to meeting my little, I’ve been given the college experience I always hoped for.

As a person, I’m still growing. I’m empathetic, ambitious and a little bit goofy. I care deeply about people and believe in lifting others up. My sorority didn’t change who I am — it amplified it. It gave me the tools, the support and the confidence to become the best version of myself while creating bonds with girls I never would have known if I hadn’t taken a chance.

Looking back, I’m proud of my journey and where I am today.
