Empowered to Lead: A First-Generation Scholar’s Journey with Phi Delta Theta
Santiago Castillo-Lara, Wichita State ’28
As a first-generation college student currently in my sophomore year, majoring in human resource management, I am deeply honored and grateful to be selected as a recipient of the First-Generation Scholarship. This award represents far more than financial assistance—it is a reminder of the unwavering support and belief that Phi Delta Theta has in its members and their potential.
My short-term goals include maintaining at least a 3.5 GPA, running for and being elected to the vice president position within my chapter, and having a successful spring recruitment season. Looking ahead, my long-term goals are to graduate debt-free and apply to a master’s program to continue advancing my education and leadership journey.
Receiving the First-Generation Scholarship has lifted a significant financial burden off my family’s shoulders. More importantly, it has shown me how much Phi Delta Theta cares for its members—not only through brotherhood but through meaningful action that eases the stress and challenges that come with higher education. This generosity allows me to focus on my academics, leadership opportunities, and personal development without the constant worry of financial strain.
Phi Delta Theta has truly been a home to me since I first stepped foot on campus. The Fraternity has given me countless opportunities to grow as a leader, to serve alongside my brothers, and to learn lessons that will stay with me long after graduation. Every experience has helped me become more confident, responsible, and prepared to lead both within the chapter and beyond.
Thankfully, I have not yet faced a particularly difficult moment in my college career—but if and when that time comes, I know that Phi Delta Theta and my brothers will be there to support me. That sense of belonging and encouragement is what makes this brotherhood so special.
To the Trustees and donors who make this scholarship possible—thank you. Your generosity has not only lightened my financial load but has also inspired me to strive for excellence and to pay it forward. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity and to contributing meaningfully to both Phi Delta Theta and the greater community as I continue my journey to become the best version of myself.
