Back everybody hey you know January 18th a Martin Luther King Brotherhood breakfast and basketball classic will take place and joining us for a preview we have Tim brolic Albert Nixon the third and Craig said Barry and you guys I’ve seen you guys out some of the summer stages up at Harlem 100 like
Fifth Street I know you guys can get busy and we gonna move all the chairs no more tell us what you guys upto out about that so I’m basically in regards to the MLK Day breakfast we’ve been doing this since the 90s it’s opportunity to kind of engage both older
Men and younger men the organization is geared towards enriching the lives of young men ages 14 to 18 so we have a brunch and then after that we have a discussion about the violence with the young people and then we have a basketball scrimmage basically you start
Start this organization I guess no no no no we are all of it for the stuff no no wait wait well my brother was talking about was the actual event the mo k event however organization they had since the year of our lord nineteen hundred and forty-six and we’re rites of
Passage program where we service a young men you know what can you say about what’s going on in our community today how do we get a grip on that wall it’s not hard to say that at all that’s a it’s hard to really kind of it’s really
Hard to penn how you want to how you want things to be you know you want want things to be better but in different aspects in the community might have so many different struggles but the are mr. is definitely our point that’s where we come in to help the community especially
The young man to try to aid them in the right direction so we do the most we do the most positive things in the community what do you think option which causing all this havoc I mean it’s people raping women or literally get some that’s the beauty of the
Organization that’s why I think it’s so relevant today is because there relax a community reinforcement I think across the board you know there’s no sense of checks and balances anymore I know when I was younger you know I was primarily raised by my grandmother and that network of
People could you get my people in lawton we wait home and if anyone saw me I but along the way and we get to my grandmother it was a sense of like checks and balances and I feel like that’s missing there’s no sense of shame there’s no sense of honor because no one
Checks people are scared two people are scared of let’s say gang violence gun violence things of that nature so you know you see someone acting out the bunch and it’s easier to follow that path you know that’s that’s where we excel because we’re one of the few organizations that still encouraged like
Young man’s discipline leadership and community service stuff for like nothing and that works for the young man you know and you need those organizations not only one because one organization can’t do you need to partner with other organizations will be together in the same direction for a common cause
Absolutely now this breakfast tell us how is that gonna look you got the breakfast followed by what are you oh you have the breakfast all followed by group discussions or workshops those workshops vary depending on what’s going on the community of majority of the time it’s always based on them you know
Current invention what’s going on unfortunately a lot of those revolving around violence but uh we do have fun we do eat good hahahaha and everything and we make sure that everybody feels welcome there and it’s just really something real fun to do and we play
Ball so how I said we’re good I’m in a really good time um after we do have a big big session of camaraderie with us and all young men we might be interested in organization or just come to basically one little bit more about dr. King’s legacy or what the organization
Is about and and it’s really it’s really about us communicating with them they see us we see them and even if they don’t wish to be a part of the organization that’s really about helping the community that’s what we’re about us on this yeah and creating that awareness that you know you know
A lot of people before us will pave the way definitely lost their lives and who got hit over the head and we did some things to help you absolutely where you are today life is hard i well it’s a point that we do it in the you know its
Impetus appealing to the young men you know it’s not just appealing to the young men but also to young women in our communities so we need to let them know that you know us as men we’re here to us to do our role to play our part and
Everything because if it’s not appealing nobody’s not gonna go you understand I’m saying and that’s the way about what about saying listen this is what we’re doing is cool to do this it’s cool to do the right thing you know it’s cool to pledge to us you know it’s cool to look
Good in maroon and also and it’s cool to give back and do what you’re supposed to yeah we do a pretty good job this join this this group join this gang join this team that’s for turnitin just for the water of the feather for me oh yeah yes
I’ve seen you guys marching in the parade oh yeah um we’re primarily based in harlem it’s actually our recruitment season so when the young men actually start that process it’ll most likely be late februari but we have the series of events to gain appeal especially now we’re on the dawn of our 70th
Anniversary so this year is going to be really that’s why it’s a beautiful thing that we were able to promote the MLK breakfast here this is kind of the kickoff for a year this is the first event and we honor his legacy but we also speak about what’s relevant with
The young Pedro and that includes you know violence unfortunately you know I’m not gonna lie you know I’ve dealt with a lot of organizations but when the order the feather came through and i was on a mic I think out of every back in the
Desk what of the feather I got to find out more about this because you know I did all the eternities and sororities about huh right right um I’m loving what you guys are doing because you know not a lot of people stepping up to the plate
And helping our young people move in the right direction absolutely as much as we’re a message me arm station and kind of forming reformed in Harlem we’re not just in the Manhattan area were also and we also have a chapter in Queens eat Brooklyn and more recently in the Bronx
So we really just want to make sure that we promote and people see that we’re not just we’re not just here in lower Manhattan or in queens are in Brooklyn we’re actually in the Bronx oh you know what people are interested in joining or learning more about the organization we
Invite them to invite them to look into our instagrams and our tags and things like that way I didn’t Vince we make sure that were stationed as many places as possible tell them why you should join your organization so long I so many reasons alone and you carried away fro
Maybe by occupy the the beauty of the feather is that it’s a mentoring program but it’s under the Fraternal mind I know personally you know I’ve had father figures but we have a lot of our membership you know they didn’t know their father or their fathers weren’t in their lives they
Didn’t have a big brother didn’t have a little brother and the beauty about the program us three young men here we’re an example of the Alumni Association so I joined when I was 16 9 25 and I’m still giving back to that 16 14 18 year old
Age break ya catch that I stole that so I feel like it’s a beautiful organization because we encourage you to move forward I feel you know I admire the work that Greek organizations doing college but my theory is always that if you’ve at least made it to college you
Already have your foot in some type of door there’s some people who don’t even envision college so we’re for those young men that felt like you know I might be in this gang life for too long I might be in the street life too long
So we try to get them and grow them so they can go on to other organizations we have people that are now Greek now other organizations now in the criminal justice system now in the corrections facility we have brothers everywhere in every career goal so it’s it’s strange
For young men so I have access to that at 15 and then beyond that what I realized that young men I don’t know if they noticed it cuz I didn’t notice until I was the 20 year old but when I was 15 before I joined there’s a stigma
About black men like you’re going to a store your watched you go into different atmospheres and you don’t really get support from the community like you should but for some reason especially in the Harlem area but Bronx Brooklyn Queens when we wear these logos especially all the people that know of
Us from the 40s to 50 to 60 s how you doing them brother good job younger brother keep up the good work and your brother it feels good as a young man so I feel like that’s the main selling point if you’re a young man looking for something to do something positive in
Come on just wanting to like have your peers look at you a certain we have older people look at you a certain way I think this is all position for you know I know the feeling being in the stores was it’s gonna help you looking at us
Let me do my thing all right when I come to the counter i’ll grab what i want you don’t follow me around walking out and the guy keeps going back and forth what i like to add is that uh you know my brother was saying is that we’re giving
That outlet and i bring it right back to a pill you know where where exactly what a gang does we’re just offering different services you know what the gang is going to offer protection we offer that protection but we got education on our side sure you know your
To go to jail and we’re not going together you know we also we also have role models we have like my brother said you know this brothers in all sorts of fails and you know it’s not it’s not a common fuss for anybody to say in the community listen I’m associated with the
Police but we are you know we have brothers who are police officers so we’re looking at it we got brothers in a good walk of life works every walk of life I’m a film director and one of our older brothers uh-huh you know who’s also a former Panthers and things in
Nature he’s also film director as well you know so we we are almost to like you know you got you got people looking for a way out of gangs Tommy gotta shake it definitely a lot of different situations where where where young men who feel or either parents who feel that the young
Very young men need more structure in their lives they definitely come to us or we might meet them at churches we do different events with with with menacing societies and our our Kwanzaa events and things just chuckles down forever you see you see parents that have been around in different organizations that
That associate with the feather for years and when they have children they bring their children to the feather and they and they know this person and that person who we might know who all our big brothers who might have been around in the 70s or the 60s and in this innocent
It turns into one big giant them there’s no way we I can’t call it will speak to a brother from a while back so it’s all one love good job guys good job I liked the feather I like the order no one other ladies and John so you want to
Make sure that’s a little ready to come out I’m not am i winning come on Shelby show her monday january 18 we’re celebrating the life of Martin Luther King 10 a.m. at the Kennedy Center it’s on 135th between linux and fifth avenue that’s right it’s a Martin Luther King Brotherhood breakfast and basketball
