Typically, if you want to empty a room, simply say, “infertility.” It works like a charm. Trust me.
Infertility realities, long time blog readers know, once dominated my waking and sleeping.
Those who have walked in my shoes know well that infertility initially rips through your mind like a meteor. What was that? I might be unable to bear children?
The idea, blindingly revelatory, fills you with equal parts shock and despair. Then, like an asteroid strike, the weight of infertility explodes your world in an instant. All at once you don’t know who you are or what your life might might look like.
Nothing Fully Prepares You – Until Now
Because infertility realities introduce confusion on a ginormous scale most are woefully unprepared. Questions fill the air. Dreams leave the room. Dread fills it instead.
Alone, we try everything within our power to sort it out oftentimes without success. For instance, there were moments I felt as if I was walking in quick sand. I grasped at any branch of knowledge to pull me out. Other times, it felt like I was standing outside of myself watching my turbulent life as if on a big screen before me. I was a character in a mighty mystery.
Infertility realities and the tumbleweed emotions they introduce can overwhelm and knock you flat. Beyond your identity, your relationships and desires take a hit. Your life and expectations shatter. Yet, you crave time with someone who truly understands. Those are just some of the things we — yes, you and me — can discuss with filmmaker Irina Vodar in person on Saturday, Oct. 7. Her film, Anything You Lose, will premier in Los Angeles.

While infertility makes most people squirm, when handled compassionately and with those who’ve been there done that, there’s so much to learn. If you’re infertility curious or simply want to hang in the presence of fellow IVF survivors consider joining us 10/7 in Los Angeles at the Regal Theater, 1000 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90015.
Here are the details: The documentary, Anything You Lose will screen as part of Block F at 3:15 pm, Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023. A panel follows. Since we expect there will be loads more to discuss, Irina suggested we gather for libations, post-panel, nearby. Ping me in the comments or DM my Silent Sorority accounts for those details here or here.
Thankfully, infertility’s worst trauma and grief can subside. I hope, through our stories, Irina and I can help you and those you care about better understand the trajectory of infertility realities. Look forward to seeing you in person!
