Hello my butterflies welcome back to queen tt loves today i am going to be doing a voiceover but what it is going to be about is why you should look for sororities and fraternities when you go to college and then why and how you can start checking into them and finding out what
They’re about before you go to college it’s really exciting so i was watching different world all day yesterday until this morning you know i have insight in but anyway let’s get into this look and then find out why i think and i love absolutely love delta sigma theta sub already
Incorporated and i’m absolutely speaking on my behalf and these are my point of views so let’s get started okay we’re back so let’s take this nose ring out and get started from here on i’ll be doing makeup because of course here we go so it’s no secret i absolutely love being a delta
Delta sigma theta sorority incorporated is the most illustrious sorority that i can think of can i think of another one let me think not at all but if you would like to explore the opportunity to become a part of a sorority or a fraternity i think that
You should start doing your research and like your high school years what i mean by research is finding out what things that the sorority or fraternity participates in within your community because throughout all that is one of the consistent and that is giving back to the community and serving
So note it does not stop when you are done with college it actually really takes off after you get out of college and so with being in a sorority of fraternity do your research find the one that speaks to your soul your purpose what you want out of
Life the type of environment that you want and it’s bigger than just the sorority or fraternity and a whole is more about the chapter that you will join these are the things that i wish that i knew when i was in high school so i did of course know about delta sigma theta
Sorority incorporated and then i also knew about aka my family is both and so for me i always knew that it would be one of those and i always knew i have to give it up it was going to be dst i love my dst find out what the local chapter is in
Your area and you can simply use the google search to find that out join some of the programs that they have because a lot have programs for high school students and things that you can participate in in the things that i’ll speak for delta going forward that we do within the
Community you don’t have to be a part of the sorority or fraternity to volunteer those are things that also look good on your college transcript because it’s about more than just grace these days they want to see how balanced you are because guess what that means
When you come to that campus you are also going to be somebody that contributes to that campus education and the college that chooses you and that you accept to go to is about more than just grades they are also looking for what you’re doing and so yes absolutely focus on those grades get
Those four point sixes and all of those beautiful things but they also want to see who you are as a person and who you are as a person conveys in the things that you participate in right so don’t wait till you get to college start
As soon as you get to high school and sometimes before find out the different things that they’re doing we um in our chapter do um dance-a-thons for uh to raise money for human trafficking we do habitats for humanities and help build houses we do uh souls for souls where we donate shoes
And have them sent to other countries to help we do things both um within the states and internationally so there are things that you can do to give back right from your own community within that chapter if you join when you get to college when you get out of college you
Will also be joining a chapter so let’s say i grew up in pomona right so i would volunteer in pvac that’s actually my home chapter born and raised i would participate in those type of events and then when i went away to college when i came back that would be
The chapter that i would probably settle with if that’s the area that i moved back into so you begin to build a rapport it’s also about networking networking is so important in your life not just in your career but the personal things that you like doing like i have a
Non-profit i.e why you’re here and that helps with building a wide variety of people that i have an opportunity to speak to and that can help me i too have mentors they help me and it’s a sisterhood that lasts forever there is somebody that i can reach out
Almost for anything and that is what you want to build you want to have those go-to people you want to have that partnership that you’ve built and you also want to bring what you have into that space and so another thing that was a really big
Contributor for me um is that i one loved the things that pvac was doing i am a legacy my big sister is a part of delta sigma theta sorority incorporated and we belong to the same chapter my career in particular is an area of interest that the the chapter have for
Me because i of course have the non-profit and so within our chapter we had gems and then we also had delta academy the gems is a program for high school girls to come in and learn different things be a part of different things and then with academy that is for
Elementary school age girls what i had the opportunity to do was dive into that program and give back and i actually got to be the chair so it allowed me to expand on my knowledge that i had in my space for having my non-profit and bring that
To the chapter that i am with and then also there are things that i learned within being a part of that chapter because it’s a bigger network i was able to incorporate some of the practices and laws and different things like that and connections that i learned from being
The chair of the gyms and so when you think about a sorority or fraternity it’s more than what the college experience looks like as far as being out on the yard and doing different things like that that’s the fun part but even in college you’re giving back
You’re on communities you have a role and you have a place when you put that on your resume oh my gosh does it stand out it really stands out for a couple of reasons and i’m giving my perspective as a hr manager it really stands out just the
Same as college stands out right so you can have somebody with experience in a purse in a particular area and then you can have somebody with experience and a college degree the reason for me why a college degree trumped some of those things is because you have the discipline to get that
College degree it is not easy especially if you have to work and go to school you have the discipline you have the the go-getter i’m gonna i want this so i’m going to get it it costs to do that it’s not giving you anything back until it
Finally pays off so somebody to me that can go to college that says a lot about your character your drive and things like that right so the same holds true for somebody that is in a sorority and holds positions and they are active within their role they really take to heart
What they want to do in that sorority as far as giving back and being a part of so if i were to see something like a chair of the gyms on that resume and then of course you write all the different things that you did
You are not being paid to do that you are doing that because i am a college educated woman and i feel like this is what i can offer to the world and this is my purpose so i want to do this and it is just the same as a full-time job
Sometimes if not more it requires a lot of time a lot of patience a lot of knowledge a lot of research it is just as much a commitment as it is for you to go work in a corporation and work that job you have obligations and it is
Within your character that makes you stick to those obligations and really be responsible for whatever your role is because you want to give it your everything so if i see something like that on a resume even before i became a delta that really meant something to me because anything that you do outside
Of your normal work environment is really really big because that means that was a passion that means that that is something that you went out there and did straight from your heart and so it holds a lot of value in the world i’m just the same when you meet people
And i’m a d9 person right so if i meet anybody from any sorority or any fraternity is respect off top is respect off top and that broadens the community that you have there are things that we do together as d9 as well and that is so epic because you build all of these
Relationships and i’m gonna keep saying relationships because that is networking if you are wondering and i keep telling you guys if you are wondering how somebody walks in and let’s just say you graduate at 25 right you both walk in and you’re like but i had a 4.0 i went
To an ivy league school and how come this person got the job over me and they went to community college first and then wait did they go to a state college how is it that they got that over me this is the reason why number one you don’t compare yourself to somebody else
Because it’s not your business you just make sure when you show up you ready to show the entire heck out because guess what on paper when i look on paper if that other person has they’re in a sorority they volunteered they were a part of the basketball team they um was a mentor
They tutored they uh volunteered all the time they did internships all of those things is what pushes you ahead of somebody else and when you walk in you know you might be looking at them like how are they moving up so fast well they’re technically not they already did
The work and built that that resume that reflects leadership that reflects uh diligence that reflects um having uh all type of leadership skills being able to communicate being able to run an organization being able to have people under you right from in my particular role i had two people under me
But it was a question because i was one of the youngest well can you handle more people i knew i could handle more people and of course sometimes i was doing it without being paid but because it wasn’t on paper it mattered right so when i came became
A part of delta i did want to go into something with leadership something with more people under me something with different layers because you also want to be able to show the different layers that you can work with right you don’t just get along well with your counterparts you can also get
Along with mentees you can get along with somebody with the internship you can talk to a ceo you want to be able to show the diversity and how you’re able to communicate lead and execute right that’s really important and so the way that you can do
It and enjoy it and have a lifetime commitment a lifetime friendship there are people that you will meet that you will feel like you have known forever there are people that you will meet and because they simply know that you’re a delta they will take
That time to sit down with you and have lunch and see if they can help you it opens more doors for you that otherwise might have been closed it gives you more opportunities it gives you just the right to to have access to all of these things that you otherwise may not have
Had access to so it’s really to your benefit is to your benefit to give and receive always make sure that while you are taking a look at the websites to see what different things are occurring when you’re going out and participating in these things don’t just
Go and sit in the corner go and talk to somebody if you are introvert like me maybe take somebody with you take your friends with you so that you feel more comfortable because when you get there they’re going to speak to you especially if you’re younger they’re going to speak
To you and be proud of you and i never been puffed up so much as when i became a delta i mean i tell you when you do something that’s out there oh they are behind you like cheerleaders my president of my chapter is one of my biggest supporters and my biggest
Cheerleaders and she’s a lawyer and an entertainment lawyer at that like she has all of this stuff under her belt and if i was on the street and that was a normal person and what i mean by normal like a person that like i didn’t know at all
If it was my chapter president i’m just going to be honest i probably could talk to her and she would talk back because that’s just the type of person that she is but let’s just keep it 100 in la you know it’s not very many high-end
People that you could just walk up to somebody in la and be like oh i saw you doing this and i’m wondering if you will answer a couple of questions for me you’re not exactly always going to be a priority and not that it’s a bad thing
It’s just that when you are a part of organizations and things like that you prioritize who has the right and the access to your time because you’re dedicated to a specific group of people and that’s a specific group of people that you have time for so that is
Another reason why it’s really important to become a part of something that has meaning to you and that has purpose with the deltas there’s also scholarships that are available um there’s so much history and richness in the people that have come through delta and that are still a
Part of delta and you just get so much knowledge and so much strength what you surround yourself with will feed your soul right so i always keep it honest with you guys i always keep it 100. being a part of the corporate world as a black woman can drain you
So bad it can drain you depending on what role you take what company you’re in who you’re around so many things can just it could just drain you and it it just it hurts sometimes and then you have your your groups that you’re around right and then
You go around your groups and you’re doing the same things that you’re doing at work but is feeding your soul and it’s feeding your spirit and it’s feeding your knowledge and you’re gaining because in that space where you’re volunteering and doing it because that’s something that is a passion that passion
For some reason is different it pushes through and it is seen in everything that you do every letter that you write every exercise that you do every activity every donation that you make it just shows for me it it does it feels so much different because i feel like i have a
Purpose i feel like i’m appreciated you actually feel what you really are it’s your true self you don’t have to show up as anybody else but your true self because it’s something you’re volunteering to do it’s not something that you’re doing that you are going to that affects your livelihood right
So at work it’s a little bit harder and at school those things are accomplishments but they don’t necessarily feed your soul they give you the tools um the financial support the livelihood and all of those things so that you can translate that into the world what’s most important for me
With being with a sorority on top of everything is that it allows me to show up in the world it allows me the platform to share what i have and also receive it allows me the opportunity to not only give back within my chapter but
I’m a part of delta i can go anywhere i can go to japan i can go to africa i can go to another state when you show up in another state if you’re a part of like you know different groups or you’ve been to a convention or something like that where
More of your sorority shows up um and then the events that include d9 you can you build relationships not just with the people in your surrounding area but due to social media now which is an amazing thing i’ve met people that are in japan i’ve met people that are in
Other states that are frequent so when i go to those states i can hit them up and be like hey are you guys having something out there you know i want to meet with you and then you meet more people right so if i for one day decided to take a job in
Atlanta i have a directory of sars that i could reach out to when i got to atlanta that would make it feel more like home that would make that transition a little bit different right and you don’t only talk about sorority business you talk about a range of things there’s all types of
Communities all types of groups within the sorority itself and again due to social media now it stretches so far right so i’ve seen in a particular group where when the hurricane just happened i don’t remember the name of the last one in new orleans not this recent one but the one right before
We were actually at a convention it was held in new orleans right so when we had um a group of all of the people that were out there one star literally went on to facebook and was like hey is anybody in this area my daughter’s in this area i
Can’t get to her i need somebody to please go and get her and make sure that she’s safe when i tell you those comments went up and they didn’t go up with you know just foolishness talk because we about business it didn’t go up with foolishness talk like i hope
This happens i mean that’s good too i hope this happened blah blah blah it was people replying with answers where is she how can i go get her what’s your number i’m a gun i’m going to call you when she gets here she can stay with me
Don’t worry about her i’ll video chat you here’s my address here’s this like they somebody had that baby within an hour within an hour that is the type of love and support and sisterhood that comes from being in a sorority and so that is why i think that when you get to high
High school start really looking into what you want to do i have a couple of nieces that are much younger than that and they already know you know because they’ve been exposed to it they already know what they want to do um and in my family now at this point we have
People from four different sororities and and i support them just the same and they support me just the same it’s all about what is comfortable to you but i’m just i’m ju can i tell you can i tell you delta sigma theta sorority incorporated is it it is it
It’s a quick little plug i compared to like in high school there was a height there was a cheerleaders and then there was the song leaders right so when i went out i did song leader because it was a little more pep in your step a
Little more twist in your hip a little more attitude and finesse oh yeah baby i went out for the song leaders that to me is like what a delta is it’s like colorful it’s everything it’s diverse it can do both like that is that’s the equivalent for me
That’s how i explain it when i and when i think about it to myself that’s how i knew oh no i want to do that i want to be with them where can i find them and unfortunately i went to um a pwc um so i did not go to a hbcu
Or a campus with a sorority for delta on that campus if you have questions about something like that when you get to college still build your relationship with the chapter that you’re volunteering with or possibly in their youth program excuse me possibly in their youth program and then when you get to college
If you pick a college that doesn’t have that sorority on the campus reach back out to whomever you’ve been building that relationship and they’ll take it from there most of the information that we give out will correlate with what is right online but what i always do is exactly what my
Sister recommended for me and that is for you to go and take a look go and be a part of because it’s a feel you should get that feel-good feeling when you step into it right it’s not like applying for a job where you
Have to get this job it depends on it no you literally want to go where you feel at home like when you’re looking for a house you don’t just buy um the house that looks a certain way if you go in and it doesn’t feel right you
Want the feel you want it to look good feel good fit match what you want to put in it match what you want to get out of it when you sell it like literally take the time to do your research be a part of because that is the greatest investment that you can
Make in yourself and it’s the best investment that you’re going to be able to make into the community i will say that if you um to be fair if you look on the website and it’s something that you want to do that’s not there but you love everything else about it again
Talk to the person that you built the relationship with because possibilities are endless in how you can give back and it’s nothing wrong with being a leader you i’m saying ideas of innovation it’ll take you far but being a part of a sorority again you get to
Practice and put into action all of those things that you love to do and build your experience and your expertise and then you have people around you that are supporting you in your walk and whatever you’re doing and so you really gain the knowledge that will translate into
Whatever business you may want to start whatever company you may want to be with those things i can’t tell you the value in them i really can’t if i could turn back the hands of time i would have done the things that i am advising you to do and there needs to be
More talk about it because in a lot of situations depending on what area you grew up in and the community that was around you and the colleges that are around you if that’s not something that is loud in your community you may not know you may think that it’s
Out of reach you know something like that and it’s not so it’s something that you really should start thinking about in high school definitely don’t wait until you get to college to do it absolutely don’t and my other thing is don’t base it off of the the chapter that’s on the college
Campus right because you can’t do it your first year i believe fact check um so that’s like three years that you’re there if you do it you know your sophomore year that’s three years that you’re there that’s why i say build a relationship with your local chapter
Because if you plan to move back home or or you know you’re going to a college that’s around you you’re only going to be with that college for you know a little bit of years but the lifetime commitment is going to be with the chapter that you join um and then you
Know the people that you’re on campus with of course you’ll build really close relationships with a couple of them and because it’s about you know who you get along with who you vibe with but the sisterhood part there’s now one of my line sisters that i can’t call right now
There’s not one because you do keep that connection and um it just it’s a feel good it really is i wish that i was um a part of a bigger family now that i’m adult honey now when i was a child i did and i was so happy with just having
What i had because baby listen ain’t nobody got time to be sharing their parents with a whole brady bunch but sharing the love with the whole brady bunch look at look online look on youtube look at some of the um what do they call them now
Is when you cross oh my gosh what do they call it now oh my goodness i’m gonna put the word right here but when you go to to cross um and everything you look at some of those lines some of them have i’ve seen some with a hundred people on
It and that is just so crazy to me i’m like you literally just built a relationship boom like that with a hundred people and even if they had become your bestie you still built a relationship and that’s a connection add to your rolodex that you can use later either for
Yourself or somebody else that might need something but either way you just build your your family and your network you don’t talk to everybody in your family every single day right so it’s it’s not realistic to expect that you will talk to your sorrows every single day but when
You need them they are there um and it’s just i just can’t really put it into all the right words because it’s a feeling it’s a feel-good feeling and you’ll know it when you get it so yes all of my high school girls and guys that may be listening to
This and girls y’all know i do makeup so the guys probably are not listening so make sure you spread the word with some of your homeboys and if you have bsu on your campus make ask them to do some things where you go to the college campuses and do things around um
Sororities and fraternities and build that relationship especially like if you’re a class president or something like that build that into your high school where those relationships are built write endless possibilities and start exercising and and uh and building your leadership skills and your networking and communication skills
In high school because when you do i’m telling you you will flourish in college and get all the best internships and all the best relationships you’d never want to burn a bridge you want to build a bridge you want to build a bridge so long that is is longer than uh the san
Francisco bridge okay longer than the golden gate okay that’s what you want to do so that’s what i am challenging all of you to do do your research and if you have any questions you can put them in the comments and i’ll answer the ones
That i can if i can’t answer it i’ll get you to the resource if it is something that is a part of the process um that information is online okay so do your research first if you have questions let me know if you’re having a hard time finding a chapter or knowing
Exactly what to type in absolutely let me know and i’ll answer that for you as well and don’t be surprised if you ask some questions in other deltas or akas or rose and they they log in and answer them for you because we are d9 the illustrious d9
But most importantly delta sigma theta sorority incorporated is the best let’s see now y’all know i had to go on and now let’s now let’s get into this look i love it it was so super cute i really like working with pinks um and reds find your color
Find your color that works for you and you’ll probably stick to some of those same colors and i have 167 thousand palettes and i am going to challenge myself to use a different one every month right so that’s what i am going to do and i sincerely thank you for tuning in
Make sure that you subscribe make sure that you hit the bell um stay connected to divine purpose because i’ll be posting information on there about the program the window is open and it will be open until the end of the month also boom magic also
