Today I want to talk about the real reason why I feel a lot of black women who go to HBCU or college in general want to join sororities like Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority if you look at the history of a sorority like the akas they are very well known for having women in
Their sorority with light skin and long hair they tend to have phenotypically mixed race women in their sorority rumor has it that apparently they even did like different tests to see if you would pass for like being mixed race or light-skinned um I’ve heard rumors about
Them doing things like a paper bag test things like the pencil test which is where you put a pencil on the person’s hair and if the pencil drops to the ground then it means that they are you know not fully black or whatever by the way someone actually did the pencil test
On me when I went to an HBCU but anyway that’s another story but I feel like the real reason a lot of girls wanted to join that uh sorority in particular is because they want to be associated with what I call positive stereotypes so a lot of people like the stereotypes about
Lighter skinned women such as being feminine being dainty being pretty being uh well off and Wealthy being snobby and bougie a lot of people like the positive stereotype of kind of being this luxurious kind of soft life woman this classy woman and and I feel like the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority embodies that
If you listen to a lot of their chants and if you look at the way that they dress even their colors pink is like their main color so it’s like if you look at the way that they dress and the way they carry themselves and the way
That they do their hair when they do those uh I think they’re called probates or whatever like when they are coming out as members of the sorority they’re doing lots of hair flipping they’re doing lots of silk presses they’re wearing lots of looser curlier hairstyles and textures
Which are often reflected by mixed race people and I feel like there is so much internalized colorism texturism and futurism in the black monoracial community to the point where a lot of these women don’t even realize that even on a subconscious level when they pedestalize certain sororities or when they pedestalize certain celebrities
Like Beyonce and Rihanna and they worship these celebrities as being beautiful a lot of women don’t even realize that deep down inside it’s because not only do they think these people are beautiful or they like their sororities and stuff but they themselves want to be in that position they want to
Be associated with that level of femininity they want to be associated with that level of softness and it’s not bad to want femininity it’s not bad to want softness but it is bad if let’s say the person that you are pedestalize is mixed race and has a lighter skin tone
But you are the opposite of that well that could cause you to have internalized trauma and when I say trauma I’m talking about emotional trauma so when people have an emotional trauma often times the way that they respond to that emotional trauma if they don’t have a healthy Outlet it’s by
Taking out that anger on people who remind you of that trauma so this is why we see a lot of scenarios where lighter skinned girls are like oh hey I was bullied by these dark skinned girls or you’ll have darker skinn black women making comments such as well you’re not
That light-skinned or well your hair is still nappy and your nose still looks like a black woman and this other girl who’s whiter than you she’s prettier than you or you’re not as pretty as Hal bear you’re not as pretty as Beyonce and it’s like all of those comments that
People make that’s just an internalized emotional trauma response because that person has an inferiority complex and that person feels rejected by your existence so the fact that you exist or the fact that you are in a sorority that is associated with femininity or It’s associated with you know these lighter
Compx lections or this snobby stereotype or whatever or the fact that you may have just been simply born of a multi-racial background that can be triggering to others but one thing that I’ve noticed is that a lot of black women they won’t admit the real reason that they worshiped sororities like
Alpha Kappa Alpha I mean to be honest I didn’t know black people were still doing sororities in fraternities um to be completely honest I don’t really see that much of a change in the black community uh because of the existence of sororities and fraternities but I digress I think that deep down inside
The reason why a lot of unambiguous monoracial black women want to be in those sororities it’s not just because their mom was in it it’s not just because it reminds them of their African-American culture no it’s because they want to be associated with that quote unquote light-skinned pretty girl
Stereotype they want to be associated with the I have good hair I’m very feminine stereotype and the reason I’m making this video is because someone commented did this and I was really thinking about it because there was this one girl that I happened to meet in the
City that I’m living in now she’s unambiguous and she was quite rude to me when I first met her and I wasn’t mean to her at all I didn’t even know her and she was an unambiguous dark-skinned black girl monoracial and she happened to be a member of that sorority so I
Started thinking about it and I was like hm is there a possibility that maybe this girl herself has internalized colorism texturism futurism maybe she wanted to somehow manifest the same privileges that she believes lighter skinn or mixed race women have and so in order to attempt to access the same
Levels of privilege she joined the sorority that is often associated with those women that’s fine I mean that’s her business but then when she meets someone like me who is not even a member of the Sor he doesn’t even really know that much about it but I happen to fit
The phenotype of that sorority it is somehow triggering to her and makes her react to me very rudely I have noticed Noti that when a lot of women chase after things like beauty or maybe you want to look more mixed or you uh want to compete with other women this is all
About status it’s all about social power because Beauty gives you Social Power and when I say social power what I mean is people may want to hire you guys may want to date you you know you may have more dating options or maybe other girls they start asking you for advice so
You’re kind of naturally seen as like a ring leader or kind of seen as like an authority in your friend group grou and so it’s validating I understand that I get that beauty is validating but don’t turn around and start lashing out randomly on mixed race women or women
Who are lighter skinned don’t start lashing out randomly because you have an internalized inferiority complex that could have been perpetuated by your own family members and when I look back on my HBCU experience and I look back on all the monoracial particularly dark skinned black women who wanted to join
Alpac Kappa Alpha sor ority well why would you want to join a sorority that has such a a history of colorism supposedly or texturism and I think that a lot of these women wanted to join that sorority in particular because like I said they thought that by joining that
Sorority they would hopefully attain some sort of pretty privilege from it or they would attain some sort of social power or some sort of attention and validation that they felt that they couldn’t get otherwise and I think it’s very hypocritical because I see women on YouTube talking about ending colorism
Texturism featurism and anti-blackness but then these same women they don’t say anything about these black organizations or these organizations that were started created and perpetuated by black people which includes unambiguous people and they don’t want to abolish those organizations they want to um help those organizations maintain relevance maybe
They will still even try to go and join those organizations and it’s like how are you unambiguous as monoracial and you call yourself Pro black and you want to join an organization that promotes my phenotype but then suddenly you want to turn around and be rude towards me or
You want to act like I think I’m better than you or you want to act like I have a superiority complex when in reality it’s like no you constantly thinking that I have a superiority complex and then attacking me as if I am Superior that is more likely to give me a
Superiority complex than if you had not said anything at all if you want to quote unquote humble someone the best way to Humble them is by simply paying them dust but instead of paying mixed people dust instead of paying lighter people dust or whatever not only do you secretly worship them
Behind closed doors you worship women like Beyonce Rihanna Etc but you also go after seeking out organizational membership or maybe even friendship with people who have that quote unquote pretty privilege so that you can then study them so that you can then copy them so that you can then almost try to
Usurp their identity somehow or thinking that oh if only I looked like her then my life would be better if only my hair texture was like hers then I would get that pretty privilege then she wouldn’t think she’s better than me anymore and don’t get me wrong I am all for Social
Power I’m all for dark femininity I’m all for benefiting and getting your bags off of Pretty privilege if you can but I think that the best way to build self-esteem and confidence is by getting rid of as much cognitive dissonance as possible and calling others colorist textur and featuress while simultaneously pursuing organizations
Such as alphaa Alpha which is known for promoting mixed race or light-skinned women or promoting women who have certain hair textures and stuff like that it’s like no just don’t be a hypocrite just admit that you want to look like that and call it a day either
Admit that you want to look like that or don’t join those types of organizations pick a strugle anyway let’s get the discussion started in the comments section let me know what you guys think and I’ll talk to you next time stay pretty ladies
