So you’re interested in joining the fraternity and sorority life community? We love to hear it. Originally formed to be a safe haven for critical thought, conversation, and debate and some of higher education’s oldest self-governing student societies, fraternities and sororities exist today as purpose driven social organizations rooted in values and stemmed from a
Foundation of relationships. They can be classified into various types and structures. On any given campus you may find a number of organizations with Greek letters. Some may be considered professional as related to a specific major or academic interest. Some are focused solely on service or a
Philanthropic initiative. Some are religious or faith-based. Some have a cultural founding because of a need to unite and gather around identity. While others may be social in nature and function on the basis of sibling hood. And then there are some that might just be using Greek letters, similar to when I was an
Orientation student leader. We called ourselves Omicron Sigma Lambda, orientation student leader. Even though we weren’t a Greek organization with solidified values, we shared a sibling like bond. And that’s something people really admire about fraternal organizations. This idea of belonging, affirmation that you matter and that there is a place for you.
On a campus these organizations are typically organized by a council affiliation and they can vary in name and in size based on the demographics of the institution. Think of it like like-minded organizations celebrating individuality and affinity while honoring specific values and principles. Check out the
Office or department or people that work directly with fraternities and sororities on your campus to learn more on the uniqueness of your councils.
