Testing testing one two one two testing welcome back to another episode of the corporate Cowboys podcast my name is Alex as always your host Tonight we aren’t able to be joined by your co-host Alex but in every regard we miss them obviously and we’ll have them on next time so
You aren’t aware what the uh form of the podcast is it really it’s just a professional development platform of sorts and the advice that we give here it’s all hypothetical really so the disclaimer argue with the disclaimer this time up front it’s that anything that we convey messages
That we send across the airwaves any content that we put up on our Instagram none of that should be construed as legal advice right if you haven’t retained us for a specific purpose then you need to take everything that we say with the grain of salt right you might
Hear a question or you might hear a prompt you might listen to an episode and say damn Alex and Alex when he’s available are spitting some fire dropping stupid gems right and if the shoe fits you might be able to lace it might be a little tight might be a little loose fitting
But if you can gleam something from it by all means do that by gleaning I mean taking extracting certain pieces that you will be able to use in your professional life and leverage it towards becoming better yourself right this is a form of uh of catharsis right homotherapy we get it
I get it corporate Cowboys are right there with you you’re already in corporate what the else can you do besides negotiating learning to negotiate for yourself for your worth and if it isn’t to get ahead and the manner like a promotion like a salary increase
Then at least it’s a way of you identifying what you bring to the table in terms of a professional you don’t want to be a lifer in one position right you already took the blue pill by being born pretty much you definitely took the blue pill by signing on the line
Living out this fantasy now it’s up to you to find who inside of your organization if anyone it might be us now we’re inside of your network if you’re listening to this podcast we might not be directly in your organization but we can speak we can speak in generalities
As to aspects and certain facets features characteristics of how Corporate operates so that you are able to navigate it bet much more effectively right and we’ve got a uh we’ve got a question today it comes from r slash career guidance and that is asking it’s flagged for advice so we’re
Going to try to give them some it’s asking is 35 too old to switch careers is 35 too old to switch careers you’re 35 years old assuming you’ve been in the workforce for I mean if you started at 18 17 years working that’s half your life essentially right
Technically for 17.5 that looks all right but they’ve been in for more than half their life it’s funny right for some of us we got in earlier we got in when we were 15. sometimes younger right we might come from a culture of work and for that I’m thankful for my family
Having brought me up in a in an environment where we had to earn our keep to a certain degree we weren’t out there eating what we killed type at least not at first but my family instilled in me that work ethic because we were Working Poor I probably wouldn’t even say middle class
Even even today even today I just like one of the common themes of this podcast is that everyone every single body inside of corporate is entry level whether they admitted or not their entry level and they should be they should act entry level forever they should pretend as if they are still
Going through a probationary period I don’t give a what type of seniority they have how long their tenure has been with whatever organization or firm they should walk in as if they’re still being evaluated whether or not will be keeping them long term [Laughter] why you should ask
It’s as if when folks first come on they tend to put their best foot forward they tend to make their best efforts their best work product and we’ve mentioned in the past that you don’t want to um overestimate your own capacity in doing so right you don’t want to walk in and
Be a superstar right off the bat any new place you end up you must leave room for improvement now I’m not necessarily saying you uh you dumb down your work right there is a way to work to the letter work to the rule but also be appreciated for the work that you do
And that way you create opportunities for advancement you’re not just relying on the fact that oh because you’re satisfying your job duties your job tasks that in time you will be promoted because you filled some seniority classification you satisfied some seniority classification so I guess it’s Alex turn now for this promotion
No no again it’s not saying you should put forth minimal effort and make a show of improving it’s just measured measured temperance measured measuring your capability I mean when you first walk in when you first apply to an organization you can only do so much beforehand during the interview phase during the
Onboarding phase during the probationary period right what are you doing well you’re scouting you’re conducting reconnaissance this is a corporate War I told you before you signed up for it you were born into it the day you realize and I’ve said this time and time the day you realize
That we are in a corporate war is the day you can begin arming yourself or finally using the arms that you do have and by arms I mean knowledge or capacity for logic and tact you have to be able you have to be able to improve you stop improving if you’re just
Putting forth minimal effort it’s as if you don’t exist you aren’t leaving your mark on anything definitely not on the world you’re just filling an empty seat but you’re still an empty suit is that what you want I’m getting off track here I just started ranting off of the title it’s
Apparent that I needed this episode right and they’re asking is 35 too old to switch careers obviously not your entry level forever you could be 40 45 50. you can change careers when you retire there’s folks who retire and then still pick up a job why
Love for the game a love for the game it’s a sense of satisfaction of doing something right now it’s not to say that they’re set for life and that that’s why they retired yeah I mean they could be taken advantage of the traditional social security program right which not many in our generation
Might be able to take advantage of but while it’s there respect to the folks who got it so the folks who can take advantage of it props kudos they’ve been in the um Workforce for some time and so while it’s there it’s something they’re entitled to but sometimes they can’t make ends meet
And so they’re relegated forced even I mean they force themselves to go find a job because they can’t make ends meet with just the the check that the Social Security Administration Cuts right so they’re left to their own devices to their own to their own means for sustaining themselves
So this body here is asking it’s asking right and ideally it’s I suppose it’s good that you find the career you’re looking for as early as possible that way you can you know begin laying the Foundation Building yourself up in terms of a reputation in terms of credibility and expertise
And your knowledge base but it’s better now than never right otherwise you might you may just retire and have to continue working for the sake of survival okay enough of that these folks are asking here for the last 20 years okay so they started when they were 15. for the last
20 years I’ve done Food Service customer service and worked in a Construction office I stopped working a month ago because I was going to stay home with our child this is a position for a receptionist I have always wanted to get my foot in working with animals I just don’t know
If I’m wasting my time I’m 35 years old if it’s something I’ll even like is 35 too old to switch careers they sound a little all over the place right now I’m not going to jump to conclusions or make assumptions but if we had this hypothetical client in
Front of us obviously standard procedure is going to be taking down their biographical info right their name age sex location industry background experience education that sort of information and then from there we would start to uh expand outward in terms of their actual interests inspiration it’s aspirations ideas dreams goals and objectives right
Because they note here that they planned on spending time with their child now I mean we don’t know if it’s going to be some type of maternity or or paternity leave at vet right that isn’t included but obviously those are going to be follow-up questions that we would ask
Whether or not they’re going to take time to be at home with their child or if they expect some type of work life balance that allows them to spend time at home with their kid now 35 is not old it’s older but it’s not too late to Pivot it’s in a
Starkly different direction from Food Service customer service and Construction office uh Administration I would say now if you had to if you had to Pivot and just get your foot like you’re wanting to get your foot into the door of this industry working with animals I mean you’ve got to ask yourself
To what extent you want to work with animals right I mean it could be another administrative position maybe you want to work in a veterinarian’s office a clinic of some kind and you could stand being some type of executive assistant some type of office administrator so it’s apparent you have experience
Even though it’s not explicitly stated it’s working in a Construction Office to me means that you’ve got certain skills certain experience that you could Leverage you could convert you get a Translate to use in an office that does work with animals I mean if that’s what you want to be in
Contact with on a day-to-day maybe it’s the animals maybe it’s the owners just animal people maybe people who own animals animal people oh I guess we’re all animals in that regard animal owners pet owners and again it depends even further you want to work with pets you want to work with livestock
Want to work with exotic animals ideas are out there the questions you need to be asking yourself if you don’t know what questions to ask that’s what we’re here for you do this on a day-to-day basis and it’s always something unique it’s always on a case-by-case basis right everyone has their own unique
Set of criteria sure criteria sounds like a clinical term like a like a sterile term it’s certain but it’s surgical what we’re trying to be is as Surgical and methodical as possible to help you because we are not you right but in trying to relate to you in as close
Of a degree as possible we give you another perspective on your circumstances your situation if you find yourself in a position where you could use professional perspective reach out to us send your folks send your family send your Associates we’re on Instagram it’s at corporate Cowboys with a z
On patreon that’s the corporate Cowboys podcast you can find us on rumble on YouTube share this podcast and recommend it I mean we’re in the business of business and in doing so we want to develop I want to cultivate a culture of corporate Cowboys that are capable of doing business better
And in turn making business better making business fun I really dislike this idea of it being too late to Pivot at 35. but there could be a slew of concerns and other issues that inform this person’s decision maybe they found that the office culture at this construction gig was
Not all they’d hoped for maybe they weren’t getting paid enough in customer service maybe they didn’t know how to socialize or upsell when it came to food service and again we don’t know what their background is in in these positions asking the hypothetical client follow-up questions is always critical
Right were they a host or a Hostess were they a server a waiter a waitress were they in the kitchen doing this food service on the line as a cook as a sous chef we don’t they’ve been in the field 20 years right it starts with him knowing how to communicate
And you would think with 20 years in the field they would be able to formulate this question as concisely as possible but to them it may be a shot in the dark bringing this question to Reddit now I’m not judging them for that what I do need them to recognize is that
If they need the help help exists if you don’t have your circle of friends or someone you’re closely acquainted to Associates family if you don’t have people in your life in your network that you can come to with these ideas with these professional issues with these career problems
That’s what you have us for feel free to write to us send us I don’t know any form of compensation bars bullion coins other questionable items and pieces if you can smell that that’s P.O box 3372 Rancho Cordova California nine five seven four one again just giving you a disclaimer none
Of this is is legal advice this is literally not legal advice right we don’t condone any wrongful activity any wrongdoing we’re just giving you perspective corporate Cowboy perspective because it’s different going into every industry every industry has its standard practices and every individual may or may not satisfy those practices
May want to know before they try to break in to a new industry what those practices are and how best to adapt to them let me continue with this question before I start ranting again they’re saying oh with an update an update here I did not think so many people would comment
Well I’m still working through them an interview went well and I have a paid working interview tomorrow a paid work what and I have a paid working interview maybe they’re maybe it’s for like some kind of apprenticeship a paid a working interview it’s like a trial I might say like a work trial
They’re going to pay you for the day to interview you in the form of work they will watch you while you work that makes sense it says the interview went well and I have a paid working internship tomorrow again thank everyone so much my eyes needed to be open I appreciate it so
Much I’m excited that’s good that’s good now we haven’t jumped down to the comments at all but to me this eludes at least foreshadows that the comments were receptive of this person’s plea for help right and their concern that they might be too old to re-enter the workforce never too
Old never told just you just need to resharpen it I mean I’ve got I got do I have knives 20 years old I think I might have knives 20 years old at this point because I carried one since third grade sure I got some knives laying around somewhere that
That are up in the teams at least right and I gotta gotta realize gotta realize you keep up and maintain your knife it’s gonna be sharp it’s gonna be sharp if you don’t or you’re using it for 20 years and you never hit that on a strop you never put stones to it
To bring it back to be hair popping hair whittling sharp right then that’s what you need to do you could go 20 years and not do it but at the end of working with whatever you are working on if you choose to work on something else a different material
With the same knife you being the knife and this other new different material being a different industry entirely you want to go in with a sharp knife right it’s all about bringing those skills up to where you need them to be don’t give me that old dogs can’t learn new tricks right
With enough hunger there’s enough hunger certain fast sets of brain elasticity come in to help you to augment and to enhance your uh drive your motivation yeah you become hungry enough you desire change enough you go out and you get it you look for it you negotiate for it you learn how much
It’s worth and how much you are worth in comparison to it take a quick look at some of these comments here the first one it says 35 is Young I mean it’s not really a hit or a Miss Right 35 is Young it’s definitely not old I said it’s older
It’s definitely not young but it’s younger right it’s never too late to change careers 35 is Young they write and they continue you’ll probably be working for another 30 years it is never too late to change careers or try a different industry right but like I mentioned before you want to
Know what you’re getting into before you make that change you want to inform yourself educate yourself do your due diligence as a professional we’re all I mean if you’re listening to this podcast we are all aspiring to be that that consonant professional striving to achieve that state of thinking
And acting being a corporate cowboy knowing how to run and Gun Shoot from the hip the takes practice and knowing that nothing you put out there is going to be a stray right they shoot from the hip there’s no Strays it’s a thing of beauty reminds me of a story but
We’re just about to touch on 30 minutes so I’ll save it somebody else writes it definitely definitely not too old would it what if it takes you five years they write and then in parentheses or 20 or or 10 or 20 I’m sorry or 10 or 20 to get to your goal
Right so what if it takes you more time to get to your goal takes you 5 10 20 years those years will pass regardless you might as well spend them working on what you want to accomplish and again it sounds like very general advice but we received the very general question if
We had the client in front of us we might be able to uh better assist them and where to apply how to interview and then strategies going forward as far as their professional development on the job promotions salary and compensation plans that sort of thing if you need
That type of career counseling by all means don’t be ashamed you may be on your first job you may be on your fifth maybe on your tenth place of employment you can’t go wrong with the second perspective to at least analyze your situation right I mean after 10 jobs what have you
Learned enough you get bored easily you want to move up have you learned anything from your previous jobs that you could bundle together and apply it to something better I mean if you haven’t thought of that yet sure it’s higher level thinking but it’s nothing crazy it’s not impossible just sometimes folks
Fail to think out of the box but it’s not their fault because they’re in the Box it’s their life it’s their situation it’s their particular and specific set of circumstances that we could help walk you through with that I’m gonna call it have yourself a good one I’ll catch you next time
