The show started salute big brother man you made it you made it today and I and I heard Kareem’s little ragged yourself talking about my internet you can’t even get the internet I got at your crib yo I got the best internet this city can can offer man what you talking
About or is it the only internet that’s offered by the city Nah The City offers free different internets at this point right I’m not gonna say what’s that I don’t know what’s that red I could I could tell you the fibers don’t really work that well so if y’all
Out there watching us on the fiber Network then uh God bless you yeah because I’m your connection about to cut off soon too hey oh here’s a hack though if you struggling with internet or anybody on struggling internet you can go to the library and rent out the uh Whata call
It the uh The Hot Spot hot spot they let you up two months like two months No Lie how does that work H just use your library C take out the take out the hospital and get it for like it’s either two weeks or two months
Something like that but I know it’s for real because I saw somebody do it I wonder what the weit list is on that I don’t think people even know about it well they do the person I know they done they just kept going back and renewing it oh
So so basically like once you get it you got internet for life because you’re the only one that knows when it’s coming back hey that’s one way to look at it y That’s a cheat code that’s a cheat code that is one way to look at it hey
You know we are very resourceful people man you know once we find a hug up man we’re going to use that thing to the fullest extent yeah absolutely that’s how we do bro what’s going on in your world bro hey man I caught a little cold man I
Don’t know what’s going on you know what I’m saying um yo do you want to remedies bro don’t you got like orange tea and ginger or something like that breaks up some roots in a bowl man some pour some hot water on it man it’s a tea That’s that’s you some Twigs some
Leaves a tree that nobody else know about nothing anything word yo I done seen Brew have a colding a 24-hour cold man that no have a cold that would take like a week that J be gone in two days bro he he put some concoction together it taste nasty
Next thing you know BR like hey I’m ready ready go whatever works man whatever works still charge $50 to get people into the party yo B said go kill a cow and make some some cow foot soup tell them tell them I’m not tell them I’m not tell them tell tell them
I’m not tell them I’m not in Rochester or Alabama I’m in Maryland that’s that’s only Alabama man that’s only Alabama yo Alabama though had the had the the the dope green fried green tomatoes though I ain’t gonna hold you yo Kar you knew it was gonna be a like why
Why do you do it to yourself man like I couldn’t help it man it’s a spot called Green listen I mean listen man F joy to my life it brings joy to my life hey if you want if you in the audience right now yo back me up food brings joy to
Your life go ahead and put it in the comments now I’m sure food brings joy to a lot of people besides me sit here watching the comments and I don’t see [Laughter] anything yo B what what you about to say I said you know I can’t even front
Man my oldest son like he gets he gets too excited about around food man I’d be like dude it’s not that serious but it’s like he he is a foodie he’s a he’s a foodie you know what Ain nothing wrong with that man hey whatever whatever lady man he find
You know the Bible says that a man that finds a wife finds a good thing right you just know that care of you said a man that finds a wife finds thing I’m cut the dots for me I cut out did I cut out no I just said connect to
Do you said whatever lady he find and then a man to find a wife find a good oh yeah cuz I said it because I said it backwards my bad I said it backwards now what he was he was gonna say is a man that finds a wife that can
Cook finds a good thing that’s he just left that part I didn’t say that but that I like that though that’s that wasn’t a version of the Bible before King James got to that was before King J that was the Ethiopian version all right man let me stop on
That for somebody go here be like buty really say I’m like we know what it say we know what it say it’s all right yeah hey man uh I just want to uh say because I just saw this on Facebook man and I think as fathers man we should
Definitely take this time to do this man but I just saw that a young lady was found murdered man she was missing since August and there was a some other a couple other man young people man I just want to just say man that my heart man
Just Grieves over that man just to get that message Man and and I saw somebody put this in the comments like yeah I wasn’t expecting that result I wasn’t either I was expecting man for this you know one particular child to be found man but you know it’s just crazy man I I
Was just thinking about that today and just looking at my own kids man like wow man it was just unbelievable you know what it’s so w you say that um my wife and I were talking about it earlier and and and the first thought that I had was like man it
Is Yo as parents man you talking about like looking at it on this end a lot of the stuff that I thought my parents was oding on makes so much more sense now yeah if you know where I grew up you know my parents was on some like it
Always seemed like they Kareem I know your parents wasn’t on that you grew up in Gates relax um now you’re right you right this time you right this time there there was no such thing as a corner store there’s no such thing as a corner store in Gates but I would be
Like yo I’m about to go to the corner store and my dad would be like nah bro like and he wasn’t saying nah bro it was you know but uh you got you get the point but uh just simply simply being that um we weren’t you know he was
Conscious of a lot of things that you know not being app parent I was I was nowhere near conscious of because you know you got to send your kids out into a world into a space that is that’s got all these dangers and risks and all all you know what I
Mean it’s just man it’s a lot it’s it is it is no joke and so when you see these stories you know what I mean man my heart ACH for their you know for those parents you know what I mean and just you know man it just yeah my heart ACH for those
Parents you know for for that young young baby’s parents and 16 years old man and I look at you know I look at my son and he just a few years from that and it’s like man help us yeah man I mean shoot like when I did
Live in the and it’s you know it’s not just the city man I know when I lived out in the suburbs man I had you know curfew and stuff like that and I’m thinking like man I’m 16 well I’m like 16 or 17 man I’m like man I’m good and
Shoot and when you got a car man drive anywhere you know like you don’t just don’t know and uh I thank God man for for praying parents because uh a couple times man it could have went left you know situations could have went left but it’s just crazy man so man as a
Parent oh no no I’m sorry go ahead n i was that was pretty much me finishing my point man is that um hey man we don’t we we live in a world man where you know there just a lot going on man then one of our Alpha Brothers on
Jackson State man got killed on campus from what I read and and just thinking about that we were just were just talking about this JSU where where coach Prime just left yeah did did they say what I mean what what what happened how did it you know
What I mean nah because I saw it on yard I saw it on watch the yard so I mean I I read it on watch the yard rather so I’m not sure you know the full details but I did see it in several places you know but just man I’m
Like and it and it it almost feels like it’s an attack man on historically black college universities man because for the last couple weeks man it’s just where we’ve been hearing it now this might have always been happening and we’re just now becoming just more aware of it
You know kind of like what Brew was saying last week but it’s kind of like once you aware of it man you paying attention now yeah the the sad the sad reality is is um you muted bro you muted brw that’s the sad part about it man we have a lot
Of I don’t see why young men go to college to to be a gangster or wannabe gangster you know in college there is so much things here for you to look at you understand what I’m saying I went to Brockport Rockport you know at a black college totally
Different you know the numbers is ridiculous if I was a young man going to school now I know about HBCU yeah had to read between know what I’m ratio ratio I don’t even think it was between I’m not trying to get nobody trouble you know it’s it’s it’s it’s it’s
It’s it hurts me for some of these these these these young people that’s go to school to be gangsters man at a college there’s no place for that there’s so much more man you could offer you could offer man in college people go there shooting up for what you go there
Want to be the hardest person for what it doesn’t make sense to me man you know what’s crazy though um I and I I I feel you 100% on that but I I realized and and again you know this was this was something I had to conciously come
To when I you know growing up in a neighborhood where the sounds that were familiar to me whether no matter what time of day or night it was you know police sirens gunshots dogs barking people screaming cuss you know what I mean all of those things that shape or create an
Environment for you and it becomes your Norm that’s what you’re comfortable in I moved to I moved to a neighborhood where it was quiet and it was too quiet for me I was like listen some something’s going on in this neighborhood that was that was my thought process because it was
Like it was like I my Norm yeah well because because of what my Norm was and so when your Norm is something that you know what I mean is really uh trauma trauma in trauma based or rooted rooted in traumas like when you when you when you find or get into
An environment where it’s it’s not as in trenched or not entrenched in in trauma it takes a while to acclimate to that and I think that’s that’s what college kind of you know can can present itself to be that transitional place for for yes young black and brown men but when when
You’re you know when you haven’t made that transition yet and it’s again it’s still a new transition for you you know the the fact of the matter is you can you can find the the the the Norms that you’re accustomed to on a campus especially when you know when when when
You figure the town is most these campuses are often times in in beded in a in a space where there’s a city surrounding it so you know depending on where you go to school you can find whatever you looking for if that’s your norm and you and you
Haven’t made those transitions yet to a new normal that’s un to cut you off B I was so I was so ready to leave Brooklyn B you know you know EOP have that summer program right I didn’t qualify to be there right I asked him I was begging him to be there
Bro just to get out of Brooklyn I even sent my deposit in bro they send my money back to me they said no this not for you you’re good you got to come in regular right I’m an EOP student but I didn’t have to do the
Summer program not all eops pro um um um students do the summer program right yeah now now all remember I wanted to get out I remember that you know what I’m saying no not all of us because me my man Ron Reagan um no I’m saying yeah back then back then not
Everybody had to go but now everybody if you if you EOP you you automatically got to go through the summer program but I I remember back is cool I not see I not see why they do it but for me I’m talk about getting out of there
Bro I was ready to go why you I tell people all the time man Brock what you mean who want to put up a drop hey bro listen I got a shotg stuck in my chest know break yeah you know what I’m saying breaking up a
Fight you know from from a block the next block on my block for what and I know everybody that was fighting and I’m The Peacemaker I’m coming from basketball practice bro you think my senior year man I have my little two two-y old sister upstairs and the dude
That pulled a gun on me that was my man he didn’t know it was me you understand what I’m saying so I look at nonsense like those like dude man I’m ready to get up out of here I had a summer job I always keep a job
I go home I go play ball I go home after that you know what I’m saying I will get myself in other little troubles but hey movies you know and then we out but I just I just had to get out man because I see better for myself bro and
I’m not knocking Brooklyn Brooklyn is my heart you know what I’m saying I will never never turn my back on the BK you know what I’m saying but at the end of the day I just as a young man and I and I have I want better for myself I had to get
Out you know what I’m saying so that was for me man that’s me and I’m not knocking Brooklyn Brooklyn is Brooklyn gave me everything Brooklyn taught me about life Brooklyn taught me a whole bunch of stuff man you know and I went to a high school that was was one of the
Top high schools so a lot of the drama wasn’t there like that and if it was there I wasn’t around it because I’m always I’m always in practice I’m always doing something you know what I’m saying and I never cut I cut class once probably twice in in all four years of
My high school never cut classes bro you understand what I’m saying so it’s one of those things for me is is a lot of these young people man they they need I don’t know I don’t know what we’re going to do I don’t know what as
Men as men of color what we’re going do because they’re not listening to us so I don’t know what it is bro I’m I’m at lost I’m lost to see what would you do I don’t know yeah I I read a post earlier I read a post earlier that kind
Of touched on you saying they not listening to us it’s just said talking it was just you know to the to the fact of how you know the amount of self-control it takes to to not you know respond to some of the things that these
Seventh graders say as a you know what I mean if you’re in the Educator’s role and uh hearing some of these some of the things that um you know these middle schoolers and even high schoolers say now you know what I mean like the stuff that’s common place that we would
Have I I don’t even I’m scared you know I mean that my dad would have definitely went to jail for what he would have done to me if I would have told a teacher SMD they would my dad would have got arrested for what he would have done to
Me cuz he he would have killed me he would he would man are you kidding me so so would your dad have done the same thing to that young man if he said it if a young man said that to him and he was a teacher so so so so that’s my question
Right so I’m posing this question for everybody that says yeah we need more black teachers yeah we need more black men yeah we need more um um people that look like you know these young men to be around them and be in the classroom and
If y’all don’t know by now my role is to play Devil’s Advocate right and ask these questions so as a black man right why would I put myself in that in that position knowing that this is going to happen knowing what my temperament is why would I put myself in that position to
Teach and and potentially be set up to take my behind the jail later that year yeah my my dad would have been like yo yeah yo I’m gonna yoke you up and then I want you to call whom ever and I’m gonna just I’m gon wait for him because clearly they needed they
Need they behinds whoop too that’s what my dad would have done my dad would have been like I’m who I’mma get to I’m no my D he was G I’mma beat enough people so that so that whoever should be beating this this into you figures out like yo yeah
N so a comment came in Chelsea said she was sing today for sixth grade um and said all she heard was uh STFU if you don’t know what that means Google it um and then who the f do you think you talking to she said that’s what she
Heard all day in class right man why would I why would I subject myself to that type of language that I don’t let my kids talk to me like that right but I’mma go to work every single day and let somebody else kid say that to me and
My response can’t be what my response would be to my kids why am I gonna do that to myself right y you know you know what’s kind of wild about that I um I I think about it like this I was uh I was I said I said
This to somebody recently um you know when we when we think about again like that that kind of that kind of narrative and how you know I mean how who like you said who who who voluntarily is going to subject themselves to yeah that’s man that’s a tough that’s a tough space to
Be in because you know real question like it’s a real question and and and the the reality is that we’re seeing a lot of teachers leave right we’re seeing a lot of teachers get out of the profession we’re seeing a lot of teachers just kind
Of pick up a whole new career go back to school to do something different right now there’s a huge flight of of of teachers that are leaving not just City Schools but just teaching in general right so you know when we talk about finding um you know people that educate
Our young people or we don’t have enough or it should be a prerequisite that you know or you know affirmative action we should make sure that 60% of the teachers in our district our African-American 20% are males right where you gonna find them where you gonna find them Yo
You go ahead now you make a great point like I so one time uh in college I had a job as a telephone fundraiser and you know I heard the stories about how as a telephone fundraiser you get cussed out and all that I was like man whatever you know
It’s comical to me and it was funny getting cussed out maybe the first two days by the end of that first week like it wasn’t funny no more the joke the joke was over like I didn’t look forward to going to work you know I mean and you know I could I couldn’t
Tell the people back coming from the person where the joke is never over that that’s the crazy part yeah like it you know I couldn’t talk back to the people that way they was talking to me because that was a definite losion job it was
Just like you know what I mean so to your to your point when you know as much love as you might have for crazy you know what I mean like as much love as you might have for him sorry B Chelsea had put something in the chat it
Was funny yeah n listen hey it’s the reality like when when when you go when you dealing with that man she real though yeah not yoy so B tell your Point man I was talking about this I was talking about this earlier man I was I was doing like some sort of
I was doing an interview and one of the things man I was talking about is that like how that’s why you got a haircut College little fresh haircut I got a first haircut because I had to do a photo shoot last week so I had to make sure I was fresh and ready
To go so that’s why I got a haircut but other than that oh boy so had a conversation about college man and how it’s it’s we live in it we we live in a bubble so like one of the things that I I actually appreciated and it’s probably
Going most more towards what Brew was saying and and I think really it’s just because of the distance from Brooklyn to Brockport but yo I have to worry about what was going on in Rochester like whatever was going on in Rochester was going on in Rochester only
Thing I focused on was Brockport you know know what I’m saying and I think man like even in that that’s an opportunity for us to separate ourselves man you know I had students tell me they just wanted to get out because they got tired of uh having to do the dishes and
I’m not saying like do the dishes do like chores it was more like the parent was out and they was the parent and they was doing everything and so it was like yeah man or it could be they got to share a bed with three other people
You know in the room in the room not that big right you know what I’m saying so it was like they just wanted that Independence like they wanted to be on their own have their own stuff eat their own food wear their own clothes not have to share up with nobody because that’s
All they’ve been doing you know from the time they were born to the time they you know were able to get get out the school that’s legit let’s talk about these comments right quick though okay what’s in the comments hold on well not hold hold hold
Up before we get to the comment man before we get to the comments yeah a lot of these people man is straight up they they self they they they selfish a lot of these kids are very selfish right and it’s not about the it’s not even the kids it’s
The the way they was raised you know what I’m saying me coming from the Caribbean background and I listen to you say all that Kareem yeah I’m like bump all that you know what I’m saying I sleep the same bed with two of my other cousins you know what I’m saying stuff
Like that that’s the culture I was Raising bro you know what I’m saying I know that every morning I gotta get up I gotta sweep the yard right got a big yard I got a big house in Jamaica and I’m not bragging but I gotta sweep the
House I gotta sweep the yard somebody gotta wash the dishes we got to get a cup of tea we get whatever bread and egg and then we walk we walk through School a mile like a mile and a half to school every morning life is just so beautiful man
Like I travel the world now I’m just I go to Africa y’all know I do my thing in Africa and I see these kids don’t have if they come to school the food that they may eat at school is probably the only food they eat for the day and we
Complaining what what are we complaining about oh I don’t want to was no dishes I want to get out the house man listen man no talk I know I know a lot of kids I know a lot of kids in school right now that you know what I
Mean the only meal they do eat is is is the one they get at school and and a lot of kids you know I mean and and this is one thing I I I you know I will shout out I don’t talk about you know what I
Mean you know for for for you know reasons um conflict of interest reasons but one of M one of the amazing aspects of the city of Rochester is the is the uh our centers you know as a kid that grew up going to rec centers you know
What I mean I know folks and I know I mean from the time I was a kid to this present day man one of the one of the you know uh pillars of the community is is those AR centers because some of the only some of the only meals our kids our
Youth eat they get from those AR cers so you know what I mean you know that’s that’s a reality that you know I mean man it’s you know no matter where you from that’s that’s that’s one of the that’s one of the harsh realities of growing up in our community is is you
Know what I mean is in in ow situations you know um and and I and there’s a degree of of understanding that that we have to have as it relates to now again respect is respect and there’s no passes I’m not giving no passes on disrespect but I’m understanding of of you know
It’s it’s tough to learn you know what I mean when when you know on an empty stomach or you ain’t slept you know or in days or you you know what I mean like think about it I mean we we you listen man we would we would crack on people in
School I mean we was we was we’d hurt your feelings and you know you had no Ed up yeah listen listen bro man we was we we could we could go at you and so you you figure Man kids coming to school and you know what I
Mean you know they they got on you know they got a situation where you know laundry not getting done regular and you know I mean they don’t have a lot to wear change in and out of and all that man man you know what I mean be mindful
Of and be considerate of of of people’s situations Dynamics because you know it ain’t easy out here and this is stuff that as kids we didn’t we didn’t know no better but you know what I mean man we we went we was going hard we was you know what I mean
We was coming we we were swinging you know what I mean in terms of like with our words we was we was trying to we was trying to hurt your feelings but you and you and y’all said that to teachers y’all said that to adults y’all said that to administrators
No that’s why I said that’s why I said we don’t get no pass I’m not giving no passes that’s why I said I’m not giving no passes for disrespect but I’m saying as as an adult now I’m understanding to you know the Sens you know what I mean
The sensibilities of situations that you know I mean that you know hopefully now that we can help others be be more mindful of and not to you know what I mean you know go at each other the way we was going because yeah we was man
Listen I know you ain’t wor at the school I I know you ain’t put on them you man listen I know I I man that’s really your hairline bro like come on man well they they wouldn’t make it and roll out for them right and and and I
Say that I say that jokingly but yo you probably not gonna make it in life either right like I think I think people get too sensitive right and then their response is well I didn’t learn anything for the past six years so my vocabulary sucks so I’m just about to curse you out
And I’m about to say something that I think everybody else in this class is going to laugh at so now I don’t feel stupid I’m going to push it back on you right and and that’s that’s I think the emotions and the feelings we have to
Figure out a way to help these young people get past and get through we have to get figure out a way for them to actually understand what these emotions are that they’re feeling right and be able to articulate and and and talk about them a different way because if we
Don’t like it’s just going to get worse and worse like there’s no way and I’m not going to be specific spefic that but I would send my my kids to certain schools right there’s just Abol be specific Isaac be I’m not gonna be specific this time but you know exactly
Where I’m talking about right like there’s absolutely no way I was gonna do it because one and and it’s not because the Educators it’s not because the the makeup of the teachers right is because the classroom environment and that is the one reason why I could never
Send my put my kids in that situation I rather them be with a teacher that I would have to go meet with every single day right and and and let them know that y you can’t teach you can’t treat my my child this way then to put them in an environment where there’s
Absolutely no opportunity where there’s a very low opportunity that you’re going to be able to learn in a in a um an environment that is going to be conducive to their growth and development I think I think even beyond the the the you know the environment not necessarily being conducive to learning
Because I think you know kids are you know kids that that that are you know and you got some bright kids so you know I mean they G they’re gonna get what they need to get you know I mean regardless but you know I say that to
Say I my my bigger concern is sometimes is when you when you’re when you’re raising your children in a certain type of home environment um that they they go out into the world and they’re they’re they’re prayed upon because of you know they’re they’re very green and naive in
A lot of ways to to the ways that you I mean of the world they you know they say like you got book smarts but you don’t have street smarts that type of thing you know what I mean listen my kids ain’t got no Street smarts you know what
I mean you know so do they really need it right now listen hey the reality is is that you know I mean we needed it so you know so what they need or don’t need isn’t necessarily you know the the point that I’m coming from I I know it helped
It helped me navigate the world you know I mean now at some point at some point my kids will have to develop that like uh you know my my my dad would always say about me like I ain’t necessarily worried now my mom now if I if to this
Day now again I’m married and all that if I if I have to go out of town for whatever reason I had to I had to start you know consciously telling myself I gotta let my mom know because my mom will be like she be like you was such such didn’t
Tell me she be wor she worried like something gonna happen and I’m not saying that that that worry ever dissipates no matter how old your children get I’m saying she from her mind from her mindset she’s thinking yo nobody’s GNA know yeah my wife know
Exactly where I’m at you know I I had to travel for work or whatever the case is if something happen they gonna call that lady trust me but she she still wants she still wants to know and I think that’s just the mindset of a parent like
Where is my child what is my child you know what I mean you know so so the uh the the kind of the whole street smart as yeah that that was see now that feed now we know where the feedback was coming from so yeah my mom just she
Wants she wants to be sure that she knows here you come with the headon could tell I could tell I could tell that I could tell that you got you and James Walters have the same same internet service K or whatever y man I was I was switching over I was switching
Over bro that’s all I was doing I was just switching over yeah stop so so going back real quick but you mentioned something about you know um you said like you know my kids are are sharp they’re smart whatever like that and then they they excited environment
And then um Vincent actually put in the chat as well too he said a bright kid will shine no matter what dark corner that they’re in right and and I think that is I think there is there’s some truth to that but I don’t think that’s I
Feel you I feel I feel where you going over that because I know my daughter like and I I was my oldest daughter right and she is a lot more sensitive to things that are said things that are done around her things that she sees than my other children right and she
Internalizes a lot of that so I don’t think she would be as successful as say um Ava in that same environment that same situation I think the environment has a huge effect on the the success of of the young people right um you know
And and I know in order to set her up for Success like what she needs around her like what type of people she needs to be around let me ask you a question real quick if you don’t mind right you you you Garden right I do and when you when you go to
Plant whatever whatever you know produce you gonna plant right you don’t go find sand to put it in you don’t go intentionally find sand you look for soil or you go buy some some grow well in sand but yeah yeah yeah right I get your I get your point
Right you know I mean but my PO my point is simply that I I hear where you coming from from the standpoint of of if if if I want this seed to germinate and to produce the Harvest that it it optimally or potentially can can can produce then
I’m GNA put it in the environment that’s going to be most conducive to that happening you know I mean so whe whether it might germinate and produce uh you know uh harvest in in again in sand you know be that at some some seeds might you know grow better in sand or
Not but I’m what I’m going to do is I’m G to try to find the best now if if all if if all I really have available is saying I’m you know I’m I’m I’mma make it work I’mma do what I got do what I
Can do or do you know uh do my do the best that I can do but if I have if I have the option to you know provide uh a different environment or or or soil for my seed then AB absolutely you know it would be it would be irresponsible of me
To say I can I can put my seed over here but you know what I’m gonna put it over there you know what I mean like you know what I mean that that that’s just my thought well let me let me say this so school is one environment right so that’s the
Environment that we are not physic we’re not usually physically in that environment with our with our kids the environment that we are with our kids in mostly is at home and so like the environment that we kind of been talking about is what happens at home right so
The the the the phrase that came to my mind immediately is remember when your parent would say I’m not one of your little friends uh there’s a lot of kids growing up and uh they parent is one of their little friends and it has to be some sort of separation
Between the parent and the child I believe in that like I I I understand that you could be close to kids you should be you should be nurturing right there’s nature versus nurtur and all the other stuff whatever but there has to be some sort of boundaries that are made
Because your job as that parent when they first come out is you want to keep that keep them alive that’s the first thing right and part of keeping them alive is making sure you doing all the stuff you feeding them make sure they use the bathroom you bathing them
Burping them all this other stuff right then as they get older then making sure that they know how to talk to people they know how to talk to you you know they know what’s expected of them they know what chores they need to do then as they get older they understand that all
Right I’m give you a little bit more freedom but understand there’s still boundaries there so you don’t go out and then just drive all the way on the other side of town and I don’t know where you at or you just let anybody inside your
Car you don’t know what they got in got with them they got have a weapon you know what I’m saying or you not just going out to parties and then you drinking and you don’t know where it came from or you smoking something you don’t know where it came from like these
Are the things that we don’t talk about that much right and we we we call it back then we call it home training but home training lasts for a while even when as we grow and get into high school and even College like there’s still things we need to learn
Because we don’t know everything we wasn’t here like one thing I tell my kids all the time they’re like oh dad you know about that like yeah I was here way before you like I seen this already you just you just getting here and so really trying to like put that point
Home is that like as parents like yeah we don’t know everything we’re not perfect we don’t claim to be but we know more than you do right now in in in a lot of situations right and and not to put you know kids down that’s not what
I’m saying what I’m saying is that there has to be difference like when my dad call or my mom call or my in-law call or my dad-in-law call yes what you need yep I could do that yep you know what I mean there’s boundaries of course but it’s like but
That started at childhood that wasn’t something that just happened as me as a grownup you know these things were still years back and so that that’s what that’s what I mean by environments school is one environment house is one environment uh the church wherever you whoever pray to that’s an environment
Right on the football field that’s an environment basketball whatever in the concert hall gymnastics I don’t care but like there’s just different environments now I think um you know you’re absolutely right there’s uh the home environment has to be has to be structured in such a way that you know
What I mean I mean there’s little things like that I I look back and think back to now that um like my mom my mom was yo and we would be playing the clean version of rap songs because we knew again the C yo I’m telling you you you
Just I’m laughing because I’m with you like I was there like y’all y’all y’all seen my dad man like yeah man your dad hands was like this yeah man there there was no smoke to be had with him was you didn’t want it so so you know what I mean but even
With clean rap songs like we be listening to she would come there turn that nonsense off this and this and that and I say that to say you know as a as again as a youth I didn’t understand it but what she was doing was she she was
Creating a boundary like nah we we not you know what I mean even if even if she did listen to it she wasn’t G to let us know that she did because she was setting the boundy as a parent like yo we we’re not peers
I’m you know what I mean and I tell people that all the time like you know my my son he go to school he got friends on his football teams he got friends in the in the community at the church he got friends everywhere he go guess what
Not one of his friends can be his dad so since since since that’s that’s the job that I got I’m going to be dad y’all check the friend box I’ll check the dad box and we all all the boxes are checked he don’t need another friend he
Don’t he don’t need another friend in me now should should he get to a age where you know he’s he’s now an adult and he’s coming into you know what I mean some adulthood things we can we can convey and communicate you know I mean or on a
Different level interact on a different level absolutely but but yeah all that friend stuff yeah n no time soon bro there’s there’s three levels man somebody told me uh when the kids are growing up man the first level is disciplinarian set the boundaries what’s right teach them
What’s wrong right there from there you coach them so you’re like all right yep this what you’re going to see and as they do things you just correct them along the way you validate them for other things right there’s that balance and then by love what you’re talking
About as they get to an age while now that they have their own family or they’re an ad and they’re doing their own thing now you’re advising them advising you know what I mean like there’s there’s there’s stages to that and at each stage you just kind of pull
Back a little bit you know but you stay in long you stay in just enough just so that they don’t feel like they’re by themselves and I know for a lot of our our friends a lot of our family members man that’s not their story you know what
I’m saying that’s not the story of having your dad or dad figure that’s there I know we talk about this extensively a lot but to be able to meet them at these stages you know what I’m saying some of us we don’t get somebody to come in until that second stage as a
Coach but then now they got to work on the discipline part because when you try to coach them and tell them something they don’t listen to you or because they’ve had there’s this past traumas that have been going on that like now you got to deal with that first right so
And I think that’s what we’re dealing a lot with in school man is that for us that’s not trained uh social workers we’re not trained their IST only thing we trained in is having compassion and just being able to try to meet people where they at
You know what I’m saying but there’s a lot of there’s a lot work that has to be done inner work inner healing that’s got to be done you know what I’m saying in order to even try to get through you know to them so that’s why the ones and
Then what happens a lot of times too is y’all know this the ones that are quiet seem like they got it together they get pushed to the side like we like oh they good we ain’t got to worry about them don’t give us no trouble they doing what
They’re supposed to be doing but yet we don’t know that they dealing with they own silent problems and so yeah that’s how I ended up at MCC right but but how do um how how do how do we reach that young person right that young man that
Young woman um and and where do we reach that young man and young woman that doesn’t have the support system that we’re talking about about right now right we’re all talking about my our kids and you know in our situation and you know our you know how our parents
Treated us right but the reality is in our generation there were kids that came up that didn’t have parent parents mother father in the house that you know would discipline them or or give them these Jewels right and in this generation it’s the same thing right I don’t think personally I don’t think
School is the right place for them to get that right um so where does that happen because in school schools are set up for the seven hours that young people are there eight hours of young people that are there to teach them the academic skills that potentially they’re
Going to need to be successful in life da da d da it’s not set up to provide social emotional supports as much as we’re trying to push in push these into schools I don’t think that’s where um that’s where it happens but we know that if young people don’t have these skills
They’re going to continue to destroy that environment that’s supposed to be set up to to teach right and and for young people to learn right so where does this happen how do we how can we potentially reach that group of young people that need that additional support
That need those parent figures that need those um advisors that might not be on a sports team but you know to get that um words from a coach right what is what what is the response and the answer to that it’s not ISS but we continue to do that right what what
Is it so and I I think and I don’t think there is an answer for that um right now that we could probably come up with but ultimately I think there needs to be um some venues or some Avenues set in place to grasp those young people that are um
Causing those disturbances and be able to kind of reach wherever they are I just think you meet them wherever they are and I think you can’t go in like I think to the the the problem if you will is going in with you know with a you know kind of uh I won’t
Throw no I won’t throw any uh groups of people under the bus but you can’t go in with a savior complex you know I mean like you know yeah listen I’m I’m here I’m listen you know I’m here and and if it’s again whatever you into you
Know what I mean again maybe I’m not maybe I’m not a coach but maybe I see you on the basketball court and I you know pick up the ball and we start we start hooping and now we now we gen you know create a dialogue and and generate
Conversation and it goes from there and if you see there enough times a rapport is going to build it’s gonna it’s going to organically happen and I think that’s that’s how we have to approach it is we have to we have to approach it from being where you know from the standpoint
Of meeting them wherever they are and being organic you know I mean like we I think we over structure stuff like oh it’s got to happen this way and you know we’ve got to take these steps and this and I’m not saying there isn’t a uh a method to
Or a methodology that can can work I but I think I think in terms of you know saying um these 10 classes or these 10 steps or these 10 sessions will you know are gonna are aimed at doing this and can do this and I’m like nah it’s GNA take it’s
Gonna take a thousand of those classes that’s not where the funding is at though you know me that’s I gonna say yeah because are we all going to do that out of kindness of Our Own Heart are we all going to reach out to 10 people and
And and and focus on them right when we got our own responsibilities well because I’m you you you know you writing a grant right now I’m writing a grant right now and we know that as part of that Grant you gotta have you have to um reference something that has happened in
The past and reference why this is a good approach right you know for to it right so I that’s why I asked the question like who was going to do it in what environment is going to is is this going to happen and how because there isn’t going to be an impact unless
It’s a unless it’s a directed impact and I agree wholeheartedly I am I am probably the biggest Advocate against um best practices that have been evidenced 25 years ago in a population full of white people right for we right to work with young African-American women and males in in a completely different
Setting I am completely against all of that right but in order to get funding for it you gotta follow these strategies that we know don’t work it has to be something that’s different well that’s well that’s because we’re not the ones funding them we’re not because we not
All we some of us are and I’m sure in other cities this is the case but I can only speak for Rochester is that you know the people that have the money that’s what they want now if there were different people with money that understand what we’re talking about or
You know prescribed to it then yeah then we can be like yeah this is what we’re doing you know I thought um I sent Germaine Myers the link I thought he was gonna uh try to get on but you know something that that he’s doing man with black Mill aeve is just revolutionary
Man because right yeah it’s it’s very different to the fact to where people was like yo how is this even working because they are not following the prescribed uh me measures or things that people normally would do like how are these kids coming back how are they you
Know how’s there even outcomes for this is very simple people it’s what we’ve been talking about relationship relationship consistency meeting them where they at you know how many times man I done sat at the table K and just talk with them about stuff that they like I ain’t care nothing about it
But I cared about them you know what I mean like I just was just like yeah what you about them I care about them I’m Sor them are the uh black and brown kids that are part of the program called black Mel okay okay yep okay yeah
I care about them because they like my little cousins my little my little nephews I think a lot of us in our roles I think in a lot of our roles that we’re in right sometime we can’t speak the truth we can’t really tell people how we feel
And what really works you know what I’m saying certain things may work for you know Caucasian kids are different there’s a few of them grow up in this in the city where like a brown like a blackhead and then all a sudden they know Street they know they know the street they understand
That and and in any efforts we just don’t tell like we got to put certain things in there and say yeah yeah yeah we’re going to do that and we’re going to do that and you all you you know that’s not going to work in IR rock you know what
I’m saying but to get that money it’s like you know why why you know what I’m saying so now that’s how when it comes to a lot of these people that has the money that’s that looks like me it looks like you likee it looks like you Kareem and Balo we should be
Invest back into a community where we know what’s really work to to get these kids to where they got to go all right and I say that to say this look at the look at the school in Chicago or male school right and look at that school that school have a I think
The graduation ra is like 100% or 90 98% or something like that at one point the last time I last time I checked them out was like two three years ago there’s a charter school in Chicago 100% the graduation rate is like and I’m talking about I’m I’m talking about they going to
Schools you know what I’m saying IV League schools D1 schools they going you know what works for them you know why can’t we go in go and talk to them about what works for them what works for their school system but it’s not going to work like
That man because it’s all politics and people people people keep on they don’t keep things simple as as the kids get used to so curriculum after they have it for three years as soon as they get get the hang of it they just switch it back to square one again these kids
Mind that’s that’s that’s what it is in education man we don’t keep stuff simple like they used to you know yeah I that’s a problem my my thing is like when we start talking about like curriculum and things like that I think curriculum is a problem as well too
Right because I I Hon ly feel that if you didn’t if from kindergarten through 12th grade if you um taught a young person right uh the skills that they needed to be successful in life not all this math and algebra and trigonometry that they’re learning it you know that
They have to learn right to be good employees somewhere but if you taught them the skills that they needed um to be successful in life throughout that process and you did not give them one test no standardized test no pop quizzes no nothing but you just had kind of
Assessments along the way to see that they were receiving information they’re retaining information I feel like they would do just as well as somebody that went through and got straight A’s and probably better than someone that went through and got straight A’s that was taught to how to take standardized tests
Right you know and I think that’s a big part of what we’re missing when it comes to to curriculum which this is a completely different conversation that I think that we’ve been having um but you know what what young people are actually taught in school you know um I think
What they should be learning in school is not even talked about until after they get out of school like if you taught a young person um about the oldest way to make money in this country shout out to right in the stock market you taught them how to trade stocks you
Taught them how to invest their money you taught them how to save their money they would be way better off by the time they got out of college or college age if they decided to get a um a trade than they would be if they went to school and
Started investing in a 401k when they got a job you know and and those are the things I think that we don’t talk about that we don’t teach that we don’t teach that it’s very rare that you’ll find a school that actually teaches Finance at
In high school right but then you send a kid off to college and you expect them to be able to get on their own figure out what to do with this financial aid check figure out how to pay for classes figure out what they need you know to be
Um you know if they got to get a part-time job and be successful so I think we’re just doing that young people a disservice when it comes to to to most of the curriculums that we have in in school system so shout out to any schools that have the opportunity to
Kind of make those adjustments to the curriculum so it’s on it’s on us then abely absolutely absolutely it’s it’s up it’s up to us as parents it’s up to us as as adults that you know care about young people to talk talk to them and and tell them all the
Things that we missed out on right I I promise you I’ll be much better off right now if I knew what I knew at this at my you said that to us a couple like a year ago Ike remember we was having a conversation I don’t know where we was
But we was having a conversation I don’t think it was on this platform and said you said like yo I’m going teach my kids I’m not teaching my B say go to college but if they want to go to college I’m G make sure they could
Go to college and I you know I was sitting back like yo where you going with this you know what I’m saying I listen but you make a you make you make great point though you know what I’m saying I you made you made an excellent point you know I’m saying about teaching
Our kids about doing this and doing this and doing this right I still hold I still almost $20,000 to Brockport by going to Brockport I don’t to Brockport you know what I’m saying I’m still holding that much money you know we I should be chilling and whatever doing what I’m
Supposed to be doing I’m still paying back college loans right so a lot of us a lot of us man we sa for certain things like that where our kids could be learning financial literacy uh I think uh Mr French he said something like that
This should be a class it should be a class you know if you have a skills as fathers if we have a skills we supposed to pass that down you know hopefully they want to be a part of it and you can show them you know like you trading um
You know by the time they get out of by the time they get out of high school they they have a bank money because you give them their allowance and they saving and they start trading and they get lucky and they do some things with it that’s great bro but
We don’t we don’t take the time to do that to our kids man which we should we should we should we should figure out another Avenue man to go with our kids you know yeah I mean my daughter keeps talking about taxes she was like Daddy I
Want to know how to do taxes I was like why do you want to know how to do taxes she about to hustle she about to get that paper no for real like in her mind she think she already thinking she like all right well everybody gotta do taxes
So I so if I learn how to do this then they can pay me to do their taxes because everybody got to do it right so you know what I mean so it’s like stuff like that my daughter was like yeah they need to teach us how to like open up big
This is a a 10year old at the time and I’m thinking like what is she talking about and I’m thinking like man is she listen to our conversations up here or but but I think it just I think another part of it too that we haven’t talked
About is there’s a such thing as Social Capital right there’s there’s there’s there’s Capital right here between us four we have information and the information we have we can share it right people that’s in the comments right now shout out the jilan and Raquel yeah like this is
Capital right here this is information that you get passed on you know to to our young even like to people we don’t even know that well other people’s kids you know what I’m saying so like because I I was having a conversation earlier about you know fraternities and
Sororities and how they how it all got started and of course started with us uh but the point I was trying to make was that uh Two Is Better Than One 10 is better than five right so if we can come together well let me ask you
This question is nine better than eight is nine better than [Laughter] eight yo you you not g you not gonna put me in that position for every for the people that know they know right uh gota be before the 1960s but anyway uh see I lost my whole point now about
Social capital but I think I just think it’s important man a lot of what we’re talking about is that social is that Capital man we can pass it on you know to our kids we can pass on to other people’s kids you know as well man but
Like we we we we have the information it’s like that song We Got The Power like that’s for real we have it you know what I’m saying and sometimes we don’t what’s up little man and sometimes we don’t even know what we holding on to right we we trying to hold on to
